The Run Around

April 27, 2008

I slept for 9.5 hours last night!!! I think it was because I was by myself – I slept like a rock smack in the middle of the bed

I got up and ate half a banana with PB before setting out on a fantastic 5.5 mile run. It was a great one! The best part was definitely the wonderful sunscreen smells wafting from my skin. It made me feel like I was a the beach! I’ve taken some time off of running because my foot surgery foot was giving me a little trouble, but it’s gotten loads better and I’m glad it made it through this run OK.

iPod playlist highlights:

  • Blue Sky, Allman Bros
  • I’m A Guy, Brad Paisley
  • Somewhere Over The Rainbow, Techno Version
  • Pachelbel’s Canon, Brass Wedding Version
  • Black Horse and the Cherry Tree
  • Amarillo Sky, Jason Aldean
  • Elephant Love Medley, Moulin Rouge
  • (Don’t That Make You Wanna) Fall In Love, Kenny Chesney
  • Let’s Talk About Love, Celine Dion
  • Heaven Knows, Taylor Hicks
  • The Rain in Spain, My Fair Lady
  • Sexual Healing, Ben Harper’s Version
  • We Are Man and Wife, Michelle Featherstone
  • A Letter To Me, Brad Paisley
  • There Ain’t Nothing ‘Bout You, Brooks and Dunn

Once home, stretched, showered, and dressed, I whipped up a batch of banana-trail mix oats. Although today’s blend had Trader Joe’s Nuts Over Antioxidants blend – a mix of dried blueberries, raisins, cranberries, orange-cranberries, raspberries and sliced almonds. I stirred it in during cooking to let the fruit plump and really enjoyed chewing my way through this bowl. I also added the remaining tablespoon or so of wheatberries for more chew!

Almond butter on a pillow of oatmeal!

With hot tea today. Breakfast was 500 kcal, 11 grams fiber and 19 grams protein.

Spring Frolics 2004

I was looking through my old college photos and thought you all would enjoy this photo of us at the same event smack in the middle of our college years.

Off to the grocery store!!

Haha, sounds like we had a similar night – I got about 8-9 hours, and was out like a light :0)

There’s a techno version of ‘Somewhere Over The Ranbow’??? Now this I HAVE to hear!

Mmm, delicious breakfast, as always!

Oh my goodness, that photograph of you two is priceless – wow, so different!

2 Katers April 27, 2008 at 11:00 am

Haha, love that photo!! You don’t look so different, but the expression on Matt’s face is hilarious!

3 Maria April 27, 2008 at 11:01 am

Wow, you two look like college kids in the photo (well, fittingly!) but, really, what a difference. :)

I love the little plate your pre-run banana was on – would be adorable to plate a colourful macaron on for dessert!

9.5 hours of sleep?! That’s fantastic!
Happy Sunday!

5 Alyssa April 27, 2008 at 11:08 am

There is a big difference between the photos!

Hi Kath,
How long did it take you to run 5.5 miles?

8 Hannah April 27, 2008 at 12:00 pm

I love that pic! You guys look so young! That oatmeal looks extra creamy and delicious…mmm

9 babycakes April 27, 2008 at 12:13 pm

oh my gosh, 9.5 hours of sleep! – sounds absolutely heavenly! I am seriously sleep deprived with finals week approaching. This entire semester has been so crazy that I haven’t managed more than 5 hours per night – not nearly enough! So glad you got in some much needed rest. I bet you feel fantastic!

Love that old pic of you and Matt. Looking at old photos is so much fun!

Have a wonderful Sunday afternoon Kath :)

Jealous because I have a horrible cold, which means i can’t sleep OR run (grr).

I love that you found that photo – the pics of me and my husband from college always make me say, who the hell IS that?? :)

11 Sidi April 27, 2008 at 12:22 pm

I slept for 5 hours and 1/2 last night. Hubby is in Europe for a week and it was the first night without him. My daughter tried to keep his place warm, but there’s nothing like hubby. Miss him.

13 Ally April 27, 2008 at 12:36 pm

I’m glad you were able to enjoy your long run and that college picture is great, I love it!

Your oats look extra creamy today. Makes me want a giant bowl even though I’m full!

14 Becca April 27, 2008 at 12:46 pm

Your college today and then pics make me wish I didn’t take so many years off and was going to reunions now instead of being a freshman! I agree with Ally, your oats do look extra creamy today!

15 Jill April 27, 2008 at 1:07 pm

I can never manage to sleep that long, I’m jealous! Your college pics are cute, but I like the new pics a little more.

You should try running without music, it’s like a meditation!

16 Jenn April 27, 2008 at 1:08 pm

Those oats look SO good – I love the you called it an oatmeal “pillow” :)

I love looking at old pictures – even one or two years can make a HUGE difference, it’s so funny!

17 Jen April 27, 2008 at 1:09 pm

You guys were adorable…and you still are. Thanks for sharing. MY GOD, THOSE OATS LOOK GOOD!!!!

18 rachel k April 27, 2008 at 1:34 pm

hey kath-

would you be interested in starting a “page” where people can post their workout mixes? i’m in need of inspiration and it might be fun for everyone. just an idea.

your run distance is so motivating. i can’t wait to take a study break!

19 Kelly T April 27, 2008 at 1:51 pm

hehe- hubby looks TRASHED

i slept forever too last night and i think it was cause my boyfriend was gone. maybe the whole i love lucy seperate beds thing isnt just a bad idea

20 Neha April 27, 2008 at 2:00 pm

The oatmeal looks DELICIOUS.

And, you two look great in the picture, but you can definitely see the weight loss now in your face!

21 sarah April 27, 2008 at 2:10 pm

i feel like you and matt look so much more ‘together’ now, but you were SO cute back then too!

‘black horse and the cherry tree’ is KT tunstall in case you left that blank b/c of uncertainty :)

and your reunion fun makes me wish i was closer to my college! how many years until your official ‘5 year?’

22 lame April 27, 2008 at 5:19 pm

That play list was for themost part LAME. It’s kind of like a fashion nightmare. A little musical intervention please. My grannie wouldn’t even like that. :) Whatever your tastes run to. In this case I’d run away from.

23 Holly April 27, 2008 at 5:27 pm

Lame — Wow, you should really grow up… seriously, it’s like some people just come here to just be rude. So sick of it in all of these blogs. Who cares what your Grandma would listen to? I really honestly DONT!

Go away.

24 Jess April 27, 2008 at 5:28 pm

Music snob alert! ^^ Elitism must be tiring :(

25 Courtney April 27, 2008 at 7:11 pm

Kath, I was just curious… how much do you think you weighed in that picture? Also, how tall are you? I’m 5″4 1/2 and weigh about 130-135, but I’d like to get down to 120 like you and want a visual comparison. Thanks!

26 Kath April 27, 2008 at 7:38 pm

VeggieGirl ,
Yes, it’s a dance version. I got it from iTunes – try searching there (I don’t remember who does it).

Leena ,
I’m not really sure because I didn’t time it, but probably between 50 and 60 minutes.

rachel k,
I could add a playlist to the FAQ page, but I’m not sure how practical it would be to keep up. My normal page slots are all full though.

Courtney ,
I was in the 140’s in that photo. And I’m 5’2″. If you click on Kath and look at the photos of the “Befores” I’m in the upper 140’s in all of those, and in the cruise photo in the blue and white striped tank top, I was about 150. I’m usually heavier than most people my height though (muscular legs!) so it might be hard to compare visually.

What kind of cool music do you run to? Care to recommend some?
