The Elements

April 28, 2010

I am having such a fun time with creative settings for my lunch posts! Turning lemons into lemonade

Today was all about the elements: grass, herbs, brick, stone, ants.

I have never had a prune – they look like inferior versions of dates to me (I have a love affair with dates!! Fresh or dired, I eat them ALL). What do they taste like?
Love the melon in the nettles :)

3 izzlecanoe April 28, 2010 at 12:55 pm

The melon is among mint leaves………..

4 Kath April 28, 2010 at 6:59 pm

They’re kinda like giant raisins. And dates are superior!

Kath, Thanks to your blog I have a new-found appreciation for sardines! I also just came across this article and thought of you!

Yums! I really hope that’s not true about them ALL coming from overseas :(

Reply

7 Caitlin April 28, 2010 at 9:55 pm

unfortunately, I think it may be true. I remember reading an article a few weeks ago about shutting down the last U.S. plant that produced sardines! crazy!

I definitely need to get mint this Summer for our herb garden. I just love it! And it’s great for raw desserts

Well I wish we had as much green at our house. It’s still freezing here and our attempts at getting new grass growth has been unsuccessful.

Caitlin I saw that article on Yahoo also… seems mighty coincidental if you ask me. I think the author might be a KERF reader!

It says a lot about you that you brought one prune.

For that, you have been added to my blogroll!

Reply

22 Kath April 28, 2010 at 7:01 pm

What does it mean!?! I dont’ get it!

Reply

23 wendy @ ABCs and Garden Peas May 7, 2010 at 11:35 am

It shows great self-control and appreciation of the prune to be able to eat and enjoy only one! It’s like eating one Hershey’s kiss, or one potato chip.

I used to be a “devour the bag” kind of girl with everything. Glad I’m over that!

P.S. I learned to put a tsp of preserves in my yogurt (and oatmeal) while I was pregnant. I had gestational diabetes and it was a great way to control my sugar!

24 Lisa April 28, 2010 at 11:58 am

That’s an interesting looking spoon. At the risk of sounding ignorant…is it better than a normal spoon or just for show?

Reply

25 Kath April 28, 2010 at 7:02 pm

I don’t know if it’s better, but it was fun to eat!

I’m wondering about the spoon, too. Would that make a good baby food spoon? All I can find is plastic.

Reply

29 Kath April 28, 2010 at 7:02 pm

The wide end would be pretty wide for a baby’s mouth. Have you tried looking for condiment spoons for baby spoons?

Reply

30 wendy @ ABCs and Garden Peas May 7, 2010 at 11:32 am

Good idea! I never thought of condiment spoons! I bet my Mom has some…

I can’t find a decent cup that isn’t plastic, either. Toys are tough, too. Why does it seem the whole world is made of yucky plastic!?

I wish I was a daring as you and able to try different things. I am such a look, texture and smell girl that it stops me from eating and drinking alot of things. Any suggestions for helping me try new health things?

Reply

33 Kath April 28, 2010 at 7:02 pm

I gotta be tough love and say just TRY them!!

Reply

34 Lana April 29, 2010 at 9:37 am

I really have a hard time with this. It is so bad that I do not even eat seafood. Sardines would never happen. I used to be able to eat tuna but I can not even do that anymore. I eat mainly chicken, some pork and very little red meat. I am not daring enough to try different veggies so I stick with the things I know I like. The one good thing is that I truely love salad. I have on every single day for lunch.

I love the pic of the cantaloupe in the mint! You definitely are getting your creative on! And the board that the food was all on, that was beautiful.

I’m a big fan of Bora Bora bars. Organic and vegan = all good stuff. They’re a superior version of KIND bars, in my eyes. They have a ton of great and unique flavors, but favorites include Paradise Walnut Pistachio (pistachios in a bar — rare!), Tribal Cinnamon Oatmeal, and Sesame Cranberry Almond. They also have one or two Whole-Foods-exclusive bars that you can only get there and aren’t even on their web site, including Quinoa Apricot, which was fantastic.

Yum! That looks like my kind of lunch. I found some great pita-type breads the last time I was in Canada, and have been eating them with cream cheese as part of my lunch this week. There are all kinds of flavors, like apple cinnamon, muesli, and cranberry orange. The sweetness almost makes them taste like dessert! Fun photos too, Kath.

I had pecans for the FIRST time yesterday! Insane, I know. They’re delicious! Although my favourite nuts (teehee) are still almonds and walnuts. Meh!

Happy Humpday! :)
