Tears In My Oats

January 24, 2010

Oh wow, Iron Jawed Angels got even better this morning. And by better I mean worse for them but more emotional for me – I got tears in my oatmeal! What a courageous group of women. Highly recommend the movie!

Breakfast was out-of-this-world good

IMG_4271 (640x427)

Finally got pumpkin back in my life! Although I picked up organic pumpkin at EarthFare because Harris Teeter is STILLLL out of pumpkin! I swear I’m going to buy 20 cans when it’s back on the shelves. I really prefer the Libby’s Pure to the organic kind. The organic has a richer taste and is runnier and is a more brownish color.

IMG_4280 (640x427)

The Mix:

  • 1/3 cup oats, milk, water, pinch salt
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • Vanilla + cinnamon, stirred in at end
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin, stirred in at end
  • 1/4 cup cottage cheese, stirred in at end
  • Toppings: Crunchy Coconut Granola, Cacao bliss, coconut and Costoco PB!

My Cacao bliss jar was almost empty so I nuked it and the chocolate coconut butter turned into chocolate FROSTING. YUUUUMM! It gets all hard and waxy in the winter when it’s cold, but with a little heat this stuff is awesome. Hope to have it in my Open Sky store in the coming weeks!!

Is there a tadpole swimming in my coffee!?!??

It’s raining outside, but Emily and I have plans to tackle EIGHT MILES! We knew it was going to rain today, but our schedules conflict so that this was the only day we could do it. A little H2O isn’t gonna hurt me!

we have the same lame weather — i actually did the switch and did my long run yesterday instead of today. hopefully it will stay dry enough for you two!

2 christie @ honoring health January 24, 2010 at 9:09 am

Have fun on your rainy run!

oats looks awesome this morning!

3 Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg January 24, 2010 at 9:09 am

Good luck on the run!!! Running in the rain always makes me feel SUPER hard core…haha, probably because I only do it about 2-3 times a year!

4 Laura January 24, 2010 at 9:10 am

How ironic! We JUST started Iron Jawed Angels in my Women’s Studies class! I thought it was just one of those “lifetime-y” movies, but apparently it’s not!
I’ll bring a box of tissues to class with me =]

5 haya January 24, 2010 at 9:11 am

i love running in the rain. sometimes. last summer i got caught in a huge thunderstorm on a 10 mile run. it was probably one of my best runs ever, until i got home and discovered that my ipod was fried :(

it will probably rain a bit here too on my run this morning!

6 The Paris Food Blague January 24, 2010 at 9:13 am

have i ever told you how much i love your breakfast candle? it makes me think–perhaps weirdly–of colonial women running around a farm, eating oats and, i dunno, mead or something, and discussing the damn British tax on tea.

if only….

7 Karla January 24, 2010 at 9:13 am

I couldn’t find pumpkin in the grocery store either! Apparently there was a bad harvest this year!
Have a great run!

8 Jessica @ How Sweet It Is January 24, 2010 at 9:15 am

When I finally found pumpkin again, I DID buy 8 of the large cans!!

9 Amelia January 24, 2010 at 9:16 am

Good luck with the run!!!

10 Jessica @ The Process of Healing January 24, 2010 at 9:18 am

If you put it in Open Sky, I just might have to get some. I’ve been jealous over that product for a long time, it sounds out of this world!

Good luck with your run! I actually like running in the rain (as long it’s a light rain haha)!

11 Estela @ Weekly Bite January 24, 2010 at 9:21 am

I like Libby’s over the oganic brands any day of the week!

Maybe someone from Libby’s will read your post and send you some 😉

Have a great Sunday!

12 Krista January 24, 2010 at 9:23 am

No, it’s not a tadpole. It’s a tear drop! Your coffee feels your pain 😉

13 Marisa (Loser for Life) January 24, 2010 at 9:24 am

I’ve been reading about the pumpkin shortage since before Thanksgiving, but there’s been plenty in my local supermarkets. Maybe no one in Philly likes pumpkin?!!

Have a great run, Kath! 8 miles – YIKES!

14 K January 24, 2010 at 9:30 am

YAHOO for the return of pumpkin! Now I can get my “tan” on with it 😉

Hope you have a great run!!

15 Paige@ RunningAroundNormal January 24, 2010 at 9:38 am

Oooh we have that cacao bliss here at our local health foods store! Might pick up a jar soon, but it’s so dang expensive!

Cute lil’ tadpole 😉

16 Susan January 24, 2010 at 9:38 am

Sometimes running in the rain can be fun! I used to pretend I was an army chick in boot camp when I ran in the rain.

And my grocery is still out of pumpkin too! Gah I can’t take this!

17 Run Sarah January 24, 2010 at 9:46 am

Good luck on the 8 miler today!

18 Cole January 24, 2010 at 9:47 am

Good luck with the 8! I have a 7 miler today and am too chicken to venture out into the rain…treadmill here I come!

19 Kristen @ Change of Pace January 24, 2010 at 9:55 am

I agree with you on the organic pumpkin. No pumpkin at Harris Teeter here in Wilmington either :(

20 Freya @ foodfitnessandfreya.wordpress.com January 24, 2010 at 9:59 am

Good luck on your 8miler! Just imagine (if you get tired and need inspiration) of the amazing feeling you’ll have at the end – works for me everytime!
Aghg I wish I could get canned pumpkin here in England, it looks so tasty! Can you think of any substitutes that work the same?

21 Kelly January 24, 2010 at 10:09 am

I heard a long time ago there was going to be a pumpkin shortage this year so maybe you will have to wait until next season? That actually happened to me last year so this year I went and bought 15 cans to last me, the cashier gave me a funny look but whatever…

22 Mara @ What's for Dinner? January 24, 2010 at 10:16 am

Great breakfast and good luck on the run!!

23 Jil January 24, 2010 at 10:17 am

The oats look delicious!! Good luck with the eight miles!!

24 Food Makes Fun Fuel January 24, 2010 at 10:34 am

Libby’s beats every brand in my opinion.
I have a little of that cacao bliss to try but I’ve never tasted it. It’s good to hear it’s like frosting

25 Carly January 24, 2010 at 10:47 am

Libby’s is DEFINITELY the best :) I stocked up on a bunch of large cans from wal-mart when I heard there was a shortage of pumpkin. I don’t know how those will last me until next year. I’ll probably have to buy some more if/when I see it again. I haven’t opened a can in a month because I’m trying to ration.

On a side note – another AWESOME way to make fluffy oats besides banana (I absolutely HATE bananas) is about a 1/4 cup of unsweetened applesauce stirred in at the end. It has saved me from opening up all of my pumpkin and it adds a little sweetness to the mix :)

26 Katey January 24, 2010 at 10:50 am

Iron Jawed Angels is an amazing film. I’m actually going to a speed networking event at the Sewall-Belmont house (headquarters of the National Women’s Party) tomorrow. Alice Paul–what an inspiration. Every woman should watch that movie and then go out and vote in every single election!

27 lindsey January 24, 2010 at 10:56 am

i had to watch iron jawed angels in my ap us history class last year, and it was very moving…i just can’t imagine a time when all that was actually going on. makes you grateful for what we have now…

♥ lindsey

28 Deva (Voracious Vorilee) January 24, 2010 at 11:10 am

Good luck on your run. I have heard of Iron Jawed Angels but haven’t had the opportunity to check it out. Your breakfast looks tasty as always :-)

29 Beth (Mackattack) January 24, 2010 at 11:13 am

8! ouch! Good luck running in the rain, I hate being wet during a workout!

30 Tamicka January 24, 2010 at 11:15 am

Man your pumpin oatmeal always looks so tasty. I must, Must, MUST get pumpkin when I head back to the store.
Good luck with a soggy 8 miles.

31 Mary (Food Fit & Fun) January 24, 2010 at 11:30 am

Good luck running in the rain….once you get out there it shouldn’t be too bad! Sometimes it’s actually quite fun! Your pumpkin oats look so delicious. I haven’t had pumpkin oats in about a month. I have been craving them but I just haven’t bought pumpkin yet! Need to do that TODAY!

32 Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) January 24, 2010 at 11:45 am

I miss pumpkin too! I have not been able to find it around here either. I am with you on buying a case of it the next time I see it at the store. I was wondering, what do the chia seeds do to the consistency of the oats? I like flax in it, but I have not tried the chia since I know it is kinda gelatinous when it gets wet. Have fun running!

33 Katie@ Two Lives, One Lifestyle January 24, 2010 at 11:56 am

We might have to wait till next year for good pumpkin because there was a really small crop this season due to weather! So very sad!

34 Lauren @ eater not a runner January 24, 2010 at 11:59 am

mmmm pumpkin makes everything better

35 Jenna January 24, 2010 at 12:00 pm

I don’t think your oats are never out if this world!!
They look amazing as always!

36 Adrien January 24, 2010 at 12:02 pm

I had a dream about pumpkin butter last night- I think it’s your fault!

Those oats look amazing, as did your dins from last night!

Heads up I’m drawing for my giveaway today at 3pm, anyone who comments is in the draw!

37 [email protected] January 24, 2010 at 12:11 pm

mmm melty cacao bliss! Love it!

38 Jasmine @ Eat Move Write January 24, 2010 at 12:20 pm

The rain might feel good during that run. I cannot imagine running 8 miles. Enjoy!

39 Lara January 24, 2010 at 12:31 pm

Libby’s is so much better than the organic. I am having trouble finding any brand of canned pumpkin right now and have fun out of my frozen stash made from real pumpkins earlier this fall.

40 Jill January 24, 2010 at 12:31 pm

I think you might have inspired me to try pumpkin oats. My Mom digs it too.
Do you use netflix, that movie ain’t on itunes! I guess I could be ol’ fashioned and drag me butt to a Blockbuster?

41 Kath January 24, 2010 at 2:48 pm

I Netflixed it

42 caronae January 24, 2010 at 12:44 pm

Mmmm, that breakfast sounds lovely. Good luck with the eight miles! I’m rooting for you :)

43 erin January 24, 2010 at 12:46 pm

44 erin January 24, 2010 at 12:48 pm

good luck on your 8 miler! i ran 7 yesterday (my longest run yet!) and it was lovely 😀 can’t wait to tackle 8 next week! and hey, the moisture will be good for your skin and you’ll come back with an extra awesome post-run glow!

45 Sarah January 24, 2010 at 12:59 pm

Good luck with the rainy run! It might be good motivation to run faster :)

PS I’m obsessed with pumpkin too!!

46 Pamela January 24, 2010 at 1:12 pm

agreed – AMAZING movie!! Should be show every November for anyone who thinks about not voting. Those women worked hard to get us that right!

47 Nicole January 24, 2010 at 1:36 pm

Hey Kath! Love, love, love the entry, as usual. I just wanted to add that I heard about the pumpkin shortage before Thanksgiving as well, so I looked for it in bulk online. I had to go through 3 stores before I finally found a place where it WASN’T on backorder. I ultimately found it at buythecase.net for a fairly okay price…not great. And some of the cans were dented, but I didn’t care. LOL I used those first, and now I have loads and loads of pumpkin in my pantry. Maybe try to find some online?

Happy Sunday! :)

48 Kath January 24, 2010 at 2:49 pm

Good idea!

49 BuyTheCase January 28, 2010 at 1:58 pm

50 Heather January 24, 2010 at 2:35 pm

I agree about the organic pumpkin – nothing beats a can of Libbys!

Good luck with your rainy run – wear a hat – it will keep the rain out of your eyes.

51 Katherine January 24, 2010 at 2:45 pm

Hope you have a great run, even if it’s in the rain! Sometimes wet running is more fun b/c you get to jump in puddles 😉

52 Emily Eats and Exercises January 24, 2010 at 2:51 pm

Oats look great as usual. I’ve actually never tried chia seeds – what does that add to the taste? nutrition?
Have a great run. I actually love running in the rain. Makes me feel very hardcore.

53 Foy Update - Cook. Garden. Write. Repeat. January 24, 2010 at 2:57 pm

Interesting side fact: Libby’s pumpkin purees are not pumpkin they are actually a type of butternut squash. Which makes sense to me. Butternut squash (at least to me) as better texture and flavor and the vines produce a lot more squashes than your average pumpkin. Honestly they aren’t that different I’m sure pumpkin and winter squash are the same genus and they may even be the same species.

54 Kath January 24, 2010 at 3:03 pm

Reaaaaaaaallllly. I’m surprised to hear that! Although it makes sense. Where did you hear it?

55 Katie January 24, 2010 at 3:32 pm

I just wondered what exactly was wrong with your foot? I have tarsal tunnel syndrome in both of my feet. When I got an MRI, it showed that I have an extra muscle in my foot that is a great contributor to developing this condition if you are an active person. (I used to be a runner, now I can hardly walk three blocks). Now I swim, mainly just using my arms, but I have found this very hard to deal with and was just curious about your struggles. Thanks!

56 Kath January 24, 2010 at 4:32 pm

I had a fused joint in my foot from birth (apparently) called a tarsal coalition. 4 years ago my orthopedic doctor unfused the joint and my tendons and food are still recovering from being immobile for 4-6 weeks.

57 Nicole January 24, 2010 at 3:33 pm

Hmmm… Libby’s uses Dickinson pumpkins for their canned pumpkin. They’re pumpkins that can cross-pollinate with butternut squash, but I don’t think that makes them any less of a pumpkin! 😉

The species is Cucurbita moschata, and if you look it up on Wikipedia you’ll see that butternut squash is a variety of that species. There are also other pumpkins/squashes that are a variety of that species. But I really think they’re two different things!

I could be wrong though. It happens often, I wouldn’t be surprised! LOL

58 Karissa @ CardioFoodie January 24, 2010 at 3:57 pm

I love Iron Jawed Angels. I watched it in college for a class and immediately bought it! Great movie!

59 Nicole January 24, 2010 at 4:10 pm

Just to clarify…

My “…I don’t think that makes them any less of a pumpkin” comment wasn’t meant to come out in a nasty way! It was meant as a joke, but now that I’m re-reading it, it almost sounds a bit arrogant. LOL Just wanted to let you know!

60 Kara January 24, 2010 at 6:14 pm

Hi Kath!

I love your blog and have been following it for a while now (first comment!)

Anyways, I’m studying abroad in Europe right now and living with a host family. My mouth waters every time I read your blog, especially when I see the oatmeal! All they eat here for breakfast is white bread and butter. I’m really craving some whole grains. Are there any European specialties that you’re aware of? I’m dying for some oatmeal but haven’t even seen it in the grocery store!

61 Kath January 24, 2010 at 6:18 pm

Look for porridge!?

62 Julie @savvyeats January 24, 2010 at 6:15 pm

I have been DYING to try Cacao Bliss, but it is out of my little college-student-with-an-upcoming-wedding-and-graduation budget. Looks yummy on oatmeal though :)

63 lynn (The Actors Diet) January 24, 2010 at 10:27 pm

when i saw that pic, i thought something else…tadpole like…ew….

64 Cyndi January 24, 2010 at 11:03 pm

Lighten up = everything is too neat and tidy

65 Ashley January 25, 2010 at 8:42 pm

I still haven’t been able to find the Bob’s Red Mill coconut granola!! I look every time I’m in Whole Foods!! Looove the pumpkin oats in the white square bowl. So purdy!!
