What was once a workoutless day turned into a pretty active one!! I determined that I could bike to the bakery and then walk to the gym with my basket of bread. The only reason I was going to drive was for the basket, and it turned out to be a pretty nice bicep workout to just carry it!
My talk went well! I sure can talk about healthy living, weight loss and food for hours. In fact, I MAY be invited back to speak to the SlimDown group regularly!
I took the long walk back to the bakery to pack in another mile of walking and then got to work at the front counter. Saturdays at noon are always busy – which is great!!
Lunchtime came soon enough at 1pm when things slowed down a bit!
Matt and I sat together so we could catch up a bit. He’s been up since 3AM and I’m sending him home for a nap soon!
He had a ginormous turkey sandwich on cheddar garlic
And I had the Monticello Garden on 2 end pieces of bread.
Both of these sandwiches were made by distinguished sandwich guru Jenny!!!! Her only hope in life is to get a few comments on the beauty of her work ; )
We had a KERF reader visit too! Margo brought us BEER from Massachusetts! Two kinds we’ve never had! Ashley + Kathleen also returned to the bakery to stock up on goods before they head back to Baltimore.
AND she brought the most amazing peanut butter cookies!! They are very fudgy – Margo, will you share the recipe!?
I went out of control with the sweets when I had to taste our brand-spankin’-new Blondies too!!
Now I’m super full. Need to get up out of this chair to digest!
And digest quickly because tonight…there will be no shortage of food. I’m ready for a nice quiet week next week!

Oh no. Krissy just brought in Butterbeer Cupcakes!!!!!!!!! Might have to save those for tomorrow…

When I was looking at those sandwich photos I was thinking “wow, what beautiful sandwiches!” and then I read what you wrote about Jenny. Haha. She DOES do beautiful work!
Go, Jenny, go! Those sandwiches look good enough to eat! Oh, wait…
Kudos to you for conquering public speaking, the number one fear in America!
Butterbeer!!!
Whenever I read the Harry Potter books, I always imgained what the food tasted like….it’s my dream to eat at Hogwarts for the beginning dinner (not like that will ever happen).
I also wanted to try the pumpkin juice and the treacle tart
Lol – I thought I was the only one that thought of HP
Nice work Jenny! Are they termed “Sandwich Artists”? Like Subway? (only better of course).
Does most of your customers know you from your blog or do they just see/know you as the bakery owner? Do you ‘promote’ KERF there at all?
Hahahaha I have only read the first few HP books, but when I saw Butterbeer I thought “ok, pretty sure that’s something from Harry Potter- right?” Glad I was right!
Haha the Harry Potter bug has struck! have a great weekend!
You can tell Jenny her sandwiches look absolutely amazing! It makes me want a sandwich for dinner really badly! Have a great saturday night.
Those sandwiches look good, even though I am full from lunch.
It is pretty cool that you get to try different beers from around the U.S. from your loyal readers

Those sandwiches look divine, too bad I’d have to cross the Atlantic to taste one! Yum
Tell Jenny the sandwich’s are a work of art. They are beautifully layered.
…i’m looking at the Matt photo.. go help your man… i think he could use it!
Agreed, poor Matt looks totally bagged!
haha “bagged,” i’ve never heard that term before. What part of the country are you from?
Definitely looks like he needs a long nap! 3am wakeup is a killer…
Not the U.S. North of the 49th parallel…
“Bagged” must be a Canadian thing because I say it all the time too.
Those sandwiches look delicious! And butterbeer cupcakes? YUM!
great job, jenny!
Great sandwiches Jenny! It’s hard to make photogenic sandwiches
Jenny’s sandwiches are beautiful

That Monticello garden sandwich never ceases to look amazingly delish! Kudos to Jenny!
Shoot! BBC is practically around the corner from me…..As beer knowers

And also, Butterbeer cupcakes?! What an amazing way to celebrate the Harry Potter weekend! Would love to see a recipe for those babies!
Hi Cait! I found the recipe here:
http://thefarmgirlrecipes.blogspot.com/2011/07/butterbeer-cupcakes.html
=)
Awesome, THANK YOU!!
Sure thing!
Love your shirts!
Yeah, you’re going to have to get and post a recipe for those butter beer cupcakes as soon as humanly possible. I’m already having trouble getting through life without HP but cupcakes will definitely help me cope.
Oh my goodness thank you all!! I do a lot of joking about needing to create pretty, photogenic sandwiches for Kath because I know they’re going on the blog, but all these comments absolutely made my day!!
P.S. We prefer the term “sandwich wizard”
Yum I love blondies! Your Great Harvest may offer the best selection out of all of them! Seriously, I’m so sad every time I walk in to my local GH to look for something you showed on your blog only to find they don’t offer it!
AMazing work on the sandwiches, Jenny! I can vouch that they taste just as amazing as they look!!!!!!
Howdy, Kath! I’m a Virginia native and went to U.Va. for undergrad. I’m in PA now in graduate school and found your blog through a friend – I love it! I’m a runner and my boyfriend is a cyclist, so I’ve turned to your blog many times for recipes and beer suggestions. Not only that, but I feel like I’m able to get a taste of my beloved Cville again through your restaurant/concert/vineyard blog posts. Thanks for all your detailed documentation!
Hi Kath!
It was SO great meeting you today!! It was also exciting to finally walk into Great Harvest and see all the wonderful breads and treats I read about/see on your blog every day! We ate our sandwiches at the Veritas winery at one of the picnic tables and they were absolutely delicious, the tofu and pesto were so tasty together, and the bread was just divine. I think Jenny assembled them and they were true beauties!
Oh and the Savannah bar was devoured immediately upon entering the car – so good!! Thank you!
I’m glad you liked the peanut butter cookies, it’s a recipe from 101 Cook Books and they happen to be vegan cookies, too! I hope you like the beers when you and Matt try them out. Have fun at the event tonight, sounds like it will be a blast!
Here’s the recipe from her site:
2 cups whole wheat pastry flour, spelt flour, or unbleached all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon fine grain sea salt
1 cup organic, chunky natural peanut butter
1 cup maple syrup
1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Preheat oven to 350F degrees. Place racks in the top third.
In a medium mixing bowl combine the flour, baking soda, and salt. in a separate larger bowl combine the peanut butter, maple syrup, olive oil, and vanilla. Stir until combined. Pour the flour mixture over the peanut butter mixture and stir until barely combined – still a bit dusty looking. Let sit for five minutes, give one more quick stir, just a stroke or two. Now drop by heaping tablespoonfuls onto parchment-lined baking sheets. Press down on each one gently with the back of a fork. It’s a loose batter, so if you’re set on doing criss-crosses, go ahead and chill the batter for an hour or so before this step. Bake for 10, maybe 11 minutes – but don’t over bake or they will be dry. Let cool five minutes and transfer to a cooling rack.
Make 2 – 3 dozen cookies.
Thank you!!!! So glad you enjoyed your sandwiches!
My favorite pb cookie recipe!
These are WONDERFUL! I made them the other night for an after-dinner treat, and found both the dough (no eggs! Not that raw eggs keep me from sneaking cookie dough…ever…) and the baked cookies to be absolutely delicious! Most delightfully, these are ingredients I ALWAYS have on hand, which means I can have awesome vegan cookies anytime I want! WIN! Thanks!!!
Glad to see the recipe for the peanut butter cookies! They look divine.
Jenny Rocks…. she should guest blog on how she creates just wonderful sandwiches!
Pretty sandwiches! I have been making curried tuna since I saw it on your blog. Even my 9 month old nibbles it!
Is Matt wearing a hop-grenade t-shirt?? hahah
Yum! Loving those sandwich’s! They look amazing! I saw the blondies over on LLE earlier today. Blondies are my weakness. They look SOOOOO good.
Your food always looks so good. And I love how you’re actually HEALTHY, not orthorexic. White flour, sugar, and fat are totally awesome in moderation (hmm, I think my ice cream habit could use a little moderate-ing, however, hahahaha)!
Keep up the great attitude
And your pics are stunning, btw. Food never looks as good as it does on your site
oKAY i JUST BAKED THE pb COOKIES AND THEY JUST MAY BE MY NEW FAVE! tHAT SAYS A LOT COMING FROM ME, BECAUSE i LIKE MOST OF MY COOKIES MADE “RAW,” IN MY DEHYDRATOR.
So sorry, caps lock was on, Oops!
Nice going on the talk. I would love to do something like that, I just need to get over my fear of public speaking first!
Jenny – kudos on your gorgeous sandwiches!
those sandwiches do look heavenly!
poor matt – he looks so tired. has he lost some weight since starting the bakery too? he looks quite a bit thinner (he’s always been thin, though)!
so glad someone posted the recipe for those cookies from 101 cookbooks.. love that site and those cookies look delish!
butterbeer cupcakes?! YUMM. That sounds divine!!
Sandwich wizard. Haha!
And all the desserts look WONDERFUL!
I hope he actually naps today!
All the baked goods look so good, I think I have an itch to bake now!!!
Jenny, you are the sandwich wizard! I wish my sandwiches looked that good.
Quick question – can you make overnight oats without chia seeds?
Absolutely – but you definitely want to use yogurt for thickness then.
Jenny, those sandwiches look amazing!
The sandwiches look amazing! I also like Matt’s hop grenade shirt
Those sandwiches look so good, I’m ready to drive from Michigan to get one!!!
Sandwiches look awesome! Poor Matt looks way tired, hope he gets some good rest today. The artichoke grenade on his tee is so cool though
Jenny makes beautiful sandwiches! Any chance she can ship some down to SC for me!?
Butterbeer cupcakes!?! I just died.
Yummy pictures of your sandwich! And really, all our food pics look so good, always makes me hungry. I’ve learned a lot from reading your blog….you’ve changed breakfast for me forever!
Your husband looks exhausted, poor thing. Hope he gets some rest soon. I’m sure opening a new business has been hard on both of you….kudos to you for all of your hard work, and I hope it all pays off!
Jenny- they’re gorgeous sandwiches
Jealous of your cupcakes, I’ve been craving one for about 5 days now!
Food is all or nothing sometimes, eh? I can relate!
Jenny, you are def the sandwich wizard! I wish those sammies were scratch and sniff
And Margo thank you for that recipe!! Yay vegan!! I don’t mind veganizing things but it’s so wonderful when the work is already done!
It looks like Matt could use a vacation day or at least some TLC and a rest from getting up at 3 a.m. every morning. Have a Starr Hill Matt and take a day off!
He doesn’t get up at 3 everyday – just this one! But you’ll be pleased to know on his day off he goes straight to the breweries
Butterbear cupcakes? O. MY. WORD.
It’s so fantastic that you can still use all your mad skillz as an RD while working at the bakery. Go Kath!
Oh yumm, those baked goods look amazing. You’re killing me here!!
Also I tried out your ‘dough boy smoothie’ the other day for the first day, and i have to say IM A HUGE FAN!
Beautiful sandwiches! I know they taste just as good as they look!
Where is Matt’s shirt from?
the Brewing Network!
Thanks for the PB cookie recipe but what about the one for the blondies? They look equally delicious!
