Sweet Endings

September 16, 2012

Despite some trouble with naps in the AM, we had a great day on Friday! I again felt well rested, and breastfeeding seems to have turned a corner. My little baby bird has learned to open his mouth wide in anticipation and the pain has subsided…..for the most part…but not totally.

For breakfast I made un-overnight oats, which is just the same ingredients put together in 5 minutes.

Yogurt, milk, oats, chia seeds, berries, cinnamon, granola and sunbutter, all mixed together.

The texture is much soupier than overnight oats, but the flavors are just as fun!

I’ve been able to shower daily thanks to extra hands and bouncy seats. Once Mazen went down for a nap, I hopped in with an ear peeking out of the curtain and was able to get dressed for the day no problem. Too bad I was covered in breast milk an hour later!! Winking smile

We had a fun morning of eat, play, sleep with a few cries here and there and then a late lunch when dad came home.

I had leftovers from Lynsie’s dinner – herby chicken over kale salad with noodles, tomato, pine nuts and a rosemary garlic roll. It’s been wonderful to have some dinners brought to us and equally wonderful to have the leftovers for quick lunches!

Our newborn shoot photos are here. Sarah Cramer did a FANTASTIC job capturing so many sweet moments! I’ll try to throw a few into each post for a few days – I can’t choose a favorite!

mazen5days0087 mazen5days0078

Ok this might be a favorite : ) Love the bike pillow from Etsy in the background!

Dinner was a wonderful treat from Auntie Faith!

She brought us some little lasagnas with Monticello eggplant, homemade ricotta and a rich tomato sauce.

So tasty!

Plus side salads. And since they were Faith salads, they were the best ever! She puts some extra love in all of her greens.

I was able to get in a nap early evening because we had to stay up late (= 8:30) to greet Aunt Larbs and Uncle Matt!!

They drove up for the weekend with my mom for a visit

And brought a birthday cake!! We all went bonkers over how delicious this was.

Between the 6 of us, we finished nearly the whole thing. It’s all in the frosting!

Sweet dreams were had by all.

Even I’m not showering every day and I’m without child. You’re makin’ motherhood look easy!

2 Emily @ Perfection Isn't Happy September 16, 2012 at 8:03 am

Those little lasagnas look so good! And usually, I’m not even a lasagna person!

3 Kaila @healthyhelperblog! September 16, 2012 at 8:05 am

So nice that so many friends and family members are getting involved and coming to visit! It takes a village right?!

4 amy September 16, 2012 at 8:16 am

mm cake looks soo good, aunt Faith is already spoiling the little guy! Whats in the middle is it cinnamon?

5 Susan H. @ The Food Allergy Chronicles September 16, 2012 at 8:17 am

Lovely photos…sure to be treasured! Such a special time…enjoy! The lasagna looks delish…with your description…I could almost taste all the fall flavours! Cake looks divine…what was the darker filling? Chocolate? Dates? Raisins? Chestnut? Intrigued! Have a fun filled all in the family weekend!

6 KathEats September 16, 2012 at 9:06 am

Pecan (“pekanz!”)

7 Grace @ Grace Dishes September 16, 2012 at 8:21 am

I loved the idea of taking shifts when it comes to baby duty allowing one parent to get amazing rest in the other room. I’m not a mom yet but this kind of advice is GOLDEN!

Your photos are so precious. Babies grow up so fast so I can understand wanting to enjoy every minute of it. Congratulations again!

8 Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat September 16, 2012 at 8:23 am

Ahhh Kath the shoot photos are gorgeous!! I love the one of Mazen in your arms with the big yawn. SO cute!!

9 Jeri September 16, 2012 at 8:26 am

I love how you guys, you and your friends and family, dress up a meal in the cutest but elegant dishes. It makes menwantnto go out and buy new dishes! As if I need a reason.

Is the lasagna veggie only? And the eggplant chopped up like a meat filling? Still trying to incorporate a meatless day or two into the weekly plans.

10 KathEats September 16, 2012 at 9:05 am

Yep! Veggie and layered with the eggplant

11 Katie @ Talk Less, Say More September 16, 2012 at 8:33 am

The photos are so beautiful! And glad Maze gets to meet his aunt and uncle!

12 Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries September 16, 2012 at 8:36 am

Oh my goodness, I can’t get over him! I love the photo of him with your hand on him… His little face is precious!

13 Jenica September 16, 2012 at 8:53 am

You, Matt, and Mazen are just so freaking adorable together! I love the family shot. I’ve also been enjoying last minute un-overnight oats in the mornings lately. I got the idea from you, so thanks for that!

14 Alison September 16, 2012 at 9:08 am

Glad it’s improving, and remind yourself that his little mouth is getting bigger each day! Applying lanolin after each feeding can help with tender nipples in the early weeks. Tenderness is normal, but breastfeeding is not supposed to hurt! If you’ve got toe curling pain during latch on though, definitely get help from an LC or a LLL Leader! OK, you didn’t ask for advice so I’ll shut up now. :) Keep on keepin’ on!

15 Allison k September 16, 2012 at 9:28 am

I’m impressed mazen is already doing a discernible eat, sleep, play pattern. Anderson’s didn’t emerge until about 6ish weeks on its own. But… I didn’t encourage any sort of schedule either, those first few weeks felt like non-stop feeding! But, I guess it worked for us since we’ve never had a supply issue! One word of caution (and since you didn’t post details about your daily routine, I’m just giving unsolicited advice, that you’ve probably already heard) watch for sleepy cues, at under two weeks mazen can probably only stay awake for a very short time. You are doing great mama!

16 Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) September 16, 2012 at 9:29 am

Love those photos! Definitely some real moments there with Matt brushing his teeth and holding Mazen! Sounds like everyone is getting a chance to love on the little man! I’m glad nursing is getting a little better. It does get A LOT easier once they get the hang of it and the pain subsides. I hope you have an incredible Sunday!

17 Christina @ The Beautiful Balance September 16, 2012 at 9:36 am

Wow, I was going to say that you are quite amazing to be able to balance a new baby and still take photos and post! I am sure it is SO nice having the extra hands around so that you can at least shower and shovel some type of nutrients into your mouth, haha! Mom of the year!

18 [email protected] September 16, 2012 at 9:49 am

All of your eats look amazingly delicious! Overnight oats is the perfect quick breakfast for a new mommy. Love all of the pics!

19 lynn @ the actor's diet September 16, 2012 at 10:04 am

20 Rachel September 16, 2012 at 10:10 am

21 Elisabeth September 16, 2012 at 10:23 am

Love the pic of Maze looking over Matt’s shoulder! :)

22 Vidya September 16, 2012 at 3:53 pm

Same here. It’s ggreat!!

23 Kristi September 16, 2012 at 10:42 am

Sometimes cake is the only thing that will do!! I’m finding myself getting a slice from the WF bakery whenever I pass through, their frosting is divine!!!

24 Sam @ Better With Sprinkles September 16, 2012 at 10:44 am

The frosting always gets me too. :-)

The cake idea is adorable! I hope I got a birthday cake when I was born. :-p

25 Leslie September 16, 2012 at 10:49 am

Mind telling us locals where your family got the cake?!

26 KathEats September 16, 2012 at 11:58 am

It’s actually from Durham… Larbs brought it up. Wish it were local!

27 Leslie September 16, 2012 at 12:57 pm

I meant local to Durham, that’s where I am!

28 KathEats September 16, 2012 at 2:52 pm

Ahhh, right! Larbs says it’s Carolina Cake Company!

29 sharon September 16, 2012 at 10:51 am

It’s not right – you look way too good for just having a baby! You are the perfect example of what to do during pregnancy. Maze is so sweet and I think is starting to look like more of a combo of you two now, before I thought it was all you. I was wondering if you would mention in one of your posts about your decision to not have any family there for the birth, besides Daddy of course. That always makes me wonder what the thought process is when people do that. So glad breast feeding is going well. That is truely one of the best things ever!

30 KathEats September 16, 2012 at 11:56 am

I never would have felt comfortable with an audience… Even my closest family

31 Erin September 16, 2012 at 4:21 pm

Everyone is different! Both of my parents were there when I had my son. My son is named after my mother, so it was extra special for her. My dad was in the room but he sat in a chair in a corner behind my head, so he was a part of everything without actually “seeing” anything private. It worked out great for us, but I certainly see why some people would never want anyone else in the room.

32 Regina September 16, 2012 at 10:53 am

Love the one of M and M while Matt’s brushinh his teeth. Captures things perfectly :)

33 Cindy September 16, 2012 at 10:58 am

Relax! There’s no reason you can’t shower every day. I did it, and I raised four kids with a husband who worked 70+ hours per week.

34 lindsay September 16, 2012 at 11:18 am

I love the one of Matt brushing his teeth. Such a fun shot:)

35 Cailin September 16, 2012 at 11:26 am

I never understood the new mom “I don’t even have time to shower !” deal. When they are newborns you have more breaks / time to shower than as they get older! So its good that you are taking time to shower- babies do fine without their mom for a few minutes – even if no one else is around ;). I found that my daily shower made me more awake and feel more like myself!

Lovely photos and yummy looking cake !

36 Julie H. of Spinach and Sprinkles September 16, 2012 at 11:36 am

Wonderful- for the turning a corner in breastfeeding- an open mouth is a wonderful thing. Haha! ….Auntie Faith is the best, that all looks simply delicious!!! Then, you got cake too! Friday was a winning day!!!!!!! :)

37 seana September 16, 2012 at 11:40 am

You look great! (And so does Matt and Mazen) Sleep deprivation does you well :)

38 Averie @ Averie Cooks September 16, 2012 at 11:54 am

It always is all in the frosting…I am a connoisseur :)

And my fave pic of the ones in this post is you in the magenta dress and the 3 of you in the kitchen. So candid but everyone has a dreamy blissful look on their faces and like time just stopped and the 3 of you are all that matter to each other in the whole world…just beautiful!

39 Khushboo September 16, 2012 at 12:19 pm

You are an inspiration for all new moms!

40 Aja September 16, 2012 at 12:24 pm

I love the photo of you and your husband in the kitchen holding Mazen, who has to be the most adorable baby that I have ever seen.

41 Tracy September 16, 2012 at 12:28 pm

I can only imagine how good those lasagnas tasted!

Did Mazen have much of his bday cake? 😉

42 KathEats September 16, 2012 at 12:38 pm

He gobbled it down! Loved the frosting the best!

43 trang September 16, 2012 at 1:16 pm

Kath, these pictures are just precious! I love the one with matt holding the baby smiling and the baby in the crib with the bike pillow! His outfit coordinates with the background colors beautifully!

44 [email protected] September 16, 2012 at 3:00 pm

kath, mazen is completely adorable. also catching my eye: the blanket that karen crocheted! happy to see that work-of-art included in the photo shoot!

45 Paige @ Healthy Hits the Spot September 16, 2012 at 3:24 pm

How great are those pictures?! And un-overnight oats? That’s such a good idea! Yesterday I wanted ONO’s in the middle of the day, and didn’t eat them because I didn’t want to wait 6 hours

46 Laura @ She Eats Well September 16, 2012 at 3:34 pm

Those pictures are too cute and it’s so lovely that you get to have the early days of his life captured! Also, those dishes for the mini-lasagnas are too cute! Love that idea.

47 Katie @ Peace Love and Oats September 16, 2012 at 4:36 pm

How great that they got to come visit! And I love the photo with Matt brushing his teeth, how funny!

48 Jeanie September 16, 2012 at 5:59 pm

Those are great pictures!

49 Pam September 16, 2012 at 6:28 pm

I adore the picture of you 3 in the kitchen. Love your purple top!
I also love the one with Mazen making a yawn smile with you holding him, so sweet :)
Happy Times!! Glad all is going so well.

50 Greg September 16, 2012 at 8:27 pm

You look great. Mazen is adorable.

51 Delishhh September 16, 2012 at 8:32 pm

Regarding the shower thing, my little one Ella now 6 months loved me taking showers from the very first day, it was all about the shower fan!! I put her in the bounce seat and turned on the fan and she loved it. Even sometimes just went to sleep there, i used to look out of the shower now and then, and now she loves waiting for me outside, and when i come out she gives me the biggest smile.

52 Cynth September 16, 2012 at 9:27 pm

Good baby … you are doing a really great job. Keep it up.

53 [email protected] September 16, 2012 at 9:37 pm

Congrats on your beautiful baby boy! The pictures are great :)

54 Holly P. @ A Year in Wichita September 16, 2012 at 10:36 pm

You are making parenthood look like a breeze! You must be a natural! I think my favorite newborn shots are the one of the family of 3 in the kitchen and then the one of Matt brushing his teeth while holding Mazen. Cute.

55 Kayla September 17, 2012 at 4:49 am

aww what a wonderful-sounding day! i love that picture of you and matt starring down at mazen in his arms, so precious. :)

56 Barefootgirl27 September 17, 2012 at 5:13 am

I agree. The one with the bike photo is precious.

I love that y’all had birthday cake :)

57 Jeri September 17, 2012 at 7:48 am

Hey Kath, and anyone else for that matter… I thought about you since you are a new mom and still sort or working. Blogging is working right? Anyway here is a link for a free subscription to Working Mother. The website is trustworthy, no spam. I get free mags from them all the time. I shortened the URL. If you get it, think of it as a late shower gift!

58 KathEats September 17, 2012 at 8:02 am

Thanks Jeri! How is it free?!

59 Jeri September 17, 2012 at 10:51 am

You just fill out the information. Like me, I choose education, the teaching, then education and teaching again, then 1-4 employees. (I do tutoring out of my house) and the select the gift and click continue. Just fill out the address information. Once you do one magazine, you will get offeres for other free ones. Like Tennis magazine and a diabetic one. I just got Food & Wine and Better Homes and Gardens.
