I am just now getting to lunch because today we manned another fun information booth during lunchtime.
We sampled a healthy sesame stir-fry recipe made with veggies, sirloin and orange. It smelled (and tasted!) amazing!)
I had a sample around noon which helped tide me until this 2PM lunch.
I spent the time challenging people to take our portion size quiz.
Guess how many calories are in this bag of cashews, gummie worms and trail mix?
[Really guess! Answers below]
Cashews, at 6.5 oz, are 990 in that little bag.
Gummie worms – 600 calories.
And the trail mix was 816 calories.
I underestimated them all by a few hundred!! Many of the people who came through guessed right on (and one person guessed 3,000 for the cashews

Oh how I wish I were eating this sandwich in the beautiful sunlight!! At least I got some good photos out of packing it the day before
Today’s daily special is a grilled tofu and sun-dried tomato sandwich with spinach and mustard on Flax Oat Bran.
Love those embedded walnuts!!
Gotta get in the produce! Sometimes simple plain celery and carrot is just easier to pack than finding a dip to transport. Plus a furry kiwi – skin and all – to be eating out of hand.
Afternoon snack!! Siggi’s Blueberry with Galaxy Granola. Since I”m eating lunch at 2PM I’m not sure I’ll get to this, but on the other hand, I’m not going to throw away a Siggi’s and it’s been in my lunchbox slightly chilled all morning and probably should be eaten today. Guess I”ll have to have the snack!
Munch.
See y’all tonight! This day is going by FAST!

Oh gosh, I so believe it about the cashews. I used to be able to take nuts down like candy. Love them as a healthy fat, but fat is still fat! Just = more cals.
I don’t know how it smelled, but is does looks tasty, and healthy.

I believe it! And it’s so sad because I love nuts and could easily eat that many. Your sandwich is GORGEOUS!
such a tiny amt. of nuts pack quite the calorie punch! my fiance & i used to eat honey roasted peanuts right out of one of those big, glass jars & would finish it in 3 days – yikes!
That table decoration is BEAUTIFUL! SO colourful and pretty
I love your sandwich, that sounds incredible.
Nuts are calorific, but I find they fill me up way better than other snacks, so I only need a small amount – maybe it’s the fat? Either way they’re darn fine
I love that border of pretty vegetables, as long as they then get used and not wasted.
Wow, that bag of trail mix is pretty revealing. Also explains why I rarely get hungry after polishing off too much!
I always over estimate for nuts and trail mix since I know they are calorie packed. I figure it’s better safe than sorry.
I would have definitely underestimated those, good to know!!
Lunch looks supurb
Holy freakin’ moly that’s a lot of calories for a litle bag of nuts! I definitely underestimate things like that!
990 calories in those nuts! That is insane!
I love cashews! It’s my favorite nut! When I was younger I use to be able to eat a ton of them… now I know better
Hey, I just found your blog and I have never seen such love for oatmeal! I could probably chill on that page for days lol! Anyways, I started blogging on Monday, and I just added you to my blogroll because you have a very interested read! I am also hosting my first giveaway of cereal and nut butter if you are at all interested? Awesome blog and can’t wait to read on!
it always depresses me how calorically dense cashews are. because i ADORE them, and have yet to master cashew portion control haha. at least your flaxy bread keeps your nut portion in check for you! haha
I can’t believe you ate the skin of the kiwi, I had one today but had to peel it, the furry skin is too much for me
I just hope people don’t get the wrong idea and think that means they should go for the gummie worms!
That sandwich looks amazing. Good eye-opener with the calorie amounts and comparing different things side-by-side.
WOW!! maybe I need to pick up calorie counting and portion control! I would have NEVER guessed that high on all of them!!
wow who woulda thought that little bag of cashews packed such a wallop!
I want to eat all the garnish at your stirfry table. I hope you got dibs on that.
Slightly less healthy, but I was in a similar situation today when I bought a box of two chestnut fondant cakes from a French supermarket, and had no kitchen in my hostel so *had* to eat both…
Somehow, I don’t think you’d approve!
mmm, great lunch!
Woah, I’m a bit shocked about the trail mix…..
Your sandwich looks awesome. Wish I could find Siggi’s! Blueberry sounds so good.
Jenn
holy molly on the trail mix.
yes this day is going by fast! i think we all underestimate calories! at least I do
Looks yummy, Kath! Where do you get those adorable spoons? I’ve seen them on a few other blogs, too!
They look fun to eat with!
Love all those colorful veggies, and that’s just crazy about the portion sizes. As a whole, we do definitely underestimate our calorie consumption!
I love that cute spoon! Where is it from??
Wow, the stats for the treats were a little surprising! I knew they would be high but the cashews were especially higher than I would have guessed!
I think it is so concerning when people really don’t understand a portion of foods. Seriously, that is one of the biggest problems with nutrition! Looks like a great day!
Wow – that stirfy table looks so wonderful and colourful with all that fresh produce
I guessed 500- wow that is so much more than I thought!
Ok – the cashew total just blew me out of the water. I’m always sure to try to keep my nut consumption to 8-12 nuts – which always seems like so few! But the few still fill me up and after seeing that, I won’t be tempted to grab a few more!
I just hung my mouth open at all of those calorie amounts. WOW. That’s almost as much as I eat in an entire day, but I can definitely see myself tossing down that much without a second thought.
Mmmm! Your posts always me my mouth waterr
I just started my own blog, and would LOVE it if you checked it out, blogging buddies? Thank you!
Spoons are Crate + Barrel
WOW! I under-guessed on all three of those ‘little bags”!!! So I swiped your cooler packs- I will get them back to ya next time I see you! Sorry!
Did you like the siggs blueberry flavor Kath? Although they are all more tart than I am used to I liked the plain and loved the Pommegranate Passion Fruit, but for some reason the blueberry one wasn’t my thing. I doctored it with some vanilla stevia and a little milk to make it looser and try to improve overall taste but still wasn’t into it. Go figure!
Love your sandwich, looks really yummy!
Ana
YIKES- I just realized that I was somehow logged in as you on my computer!!!! I guess you never got logged out from lunch yesterday?!?! So I accidentally left “Elis” a message as you!!!! Anyways, I just bought some KODIAK CAKES!!!
Wow, I was totally shocked by the answers–and I considered myself pretty knowledgeable about Calories!
Thanks for reminding me to bust out my little Crate & Barrel spoon;)
Wow almost 1000 calories in those cashews! I love tofu in sandwiches!!
I only under-guessed no the gummi-worms. That is probably because I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE cashews and trail mix and they are 2 of my top guilty pleasures.
~Christie
I’m always surprised at what I guess as the amount of calories in foods. And what other people guess too! (:
How big are those bags? They look really tiny, like you’d easily fit all three in the palm of your hand?
They had over a cup of nuts each
Wow it’s amazing how calorie dense such small amounts of certain foods can be.
Your lunch looks really amazing, as always!
kath,
can you tell me how you make your tempeh sandwich? is it just raw tempeh?
Thanks.
Yep! Lightlife 3 Grain with some jam on good bread
I under guessed on all! I knew cashews were a lot though! And trail mix, similar to granola, is crazy. I used to eat a whole bowlful at a time. Now I weigh things like that and use more as a garnish (e.g. on oats or yogurt), rather than make it the main part of the meal/snack!
