Sunshine On My Shoulders

March 17, 2010

I am just now getting to lunch because today we manned another fun information booth during lunchtime.

We sampled a healthy sesame stir-fry recipe made with veggies, sirloin and orange. It smelled (and tasted!) amazing!)

I had a sample around noon which helped tide me until this 2PM lunch.

I spent the time challenging people to take our portion size quiz.

Guess how many calories are in this bag of cashews, gummie worms and trail mix?

[Really guess! Answers below]

Cashews, at 6.5 oz, are 990 in that little bag.

Gummie worms – 600 calories.

And the trail mix was 816 calories.

I underestimated them all by a few hundred!! Many of the people who came through guessed right on (and one person guessed 3,000 for the cashews

Oh how I wish I were eating this sandwich in the beautiful sunlight!! At least I got some good photos out of packing it the day before :)

Today’s daily special is a grilled tofu and sun-dried tomato sandwich with spinach and mustard on Flax Oat Bran.

Love those embedded walnuts!!

IMG_8080 (640x427)

Gotta get in the produce! Sometimes simple plain celery and carrot is just easier to pack than finding a dip to transport. Plus a furry kiwi – skin and all – to be eating out of hand.

IMG_8074 (640x427)

Afternoon snack!! Siggi’s Blueberry with Galaxy Granola. Since I”m eating lunch at 2PM I’m not sure I’ll get to this, but on the other hand, I’m not going to throw away a Siggi’s and it’s been in my lunchbox slightly chilled all morning and probably should be eaten today. Guess I”ll have to have the snack!

Munch.

See y’all tonight! This day is going by FAST!

Oh gosh, I so believe it about the cashews. I used to be able to take nuts down like candy. Love them as a healthy fat, but fat is still fat! Just = more cals.

I believe it! And it’s so sad because I love nuts and could easily eat that many. Your sandwich is GORGEOUS!

such a tiny amt. of nuts pack quite the calorie punch! my fiance & i used to eat honey roasted peanuts right out of one of those big, glass jars & would finish it in 3 days – yikes!

That table decoration is BEAUTIFUL! SO colourful and pretty :)
I love your sandwich, that sounds incredible.
Nuts are calorific, but I find they fill me up way better than other snacks, so I only need a small amount – maybe it’s the fat? Either way they’re darn fine :D

I love that border of pretty vegetables, as long as they then get used and not wasted.

Wow, that bag of trail mix is pretty revealing. Also explains why I rarely get hungry after polishing off too much!

I always over estimate for nuts and trail mix since I know they are calorie packed. I figure it’s better safe than sorry.

it always depresses me how calorically dense cashews are. because i ADORE them, and have yet to master cashew portion control haha. at least your flaxy bread keeps your nut portion in check for you! haha

I can’t believe you ate the skin of the kiwi, I had one today but had to peel it, the furry skin is too much for me :)

Slightly less healthy, but I was in a similar situation today when I bought a box of two chestnut fondant cakes from a French supermarket, and had no kitchen in my hostel so *had* to eat both… :P Somehow, I don’t think you’d approve!

I think it is so concerning when people really don’t understand a portion of foods. Seriously, that is one of the biggest problems with nutrition! Looks like a great day!

34 Becky @ flybynyght March 17, 2010 at 4:11 pm

Ok – the cashew total just blew me out of the water. I’m always sure to try to keep my nut consumption to 8-12 nuts – which always seems like so few! But the few still fill me up and after seeing that, I won’t be tempted to grab a few more!

35 Lauren March 17, 2010 at 4:21 pm

I just hung my mouth open at all of those calorie amounts. WOW. That’s almost as much as I eat in an entire day, but I can definitely see myself tossing down that much without a second thought.

Did you like the siggs blueberry flavor Kath? Although they are all more tart than I am used to I liked the plain and loved the Pommegranate Passion Fruit, but for some reason the blueberry one wasn’t my thing. I doctored it with some vanilla stevia and a little milk to make it looser and try to improve overall taste but still wasn’t into it. Go figure!
Love your sandwich, looks really yummy!

I under guessed on all! I knew cashews were a lot though! And trail mix, similar to granola, is crazy. I used to eat a whole bowlful at a time. Now I weigh things like that and use more as a garnish (e.g. on oats or yogurt), rather than make it the main part of the meal/snack!
