Sunshine On My Shoulders

April 9, 2009

It was a busy but fun morning! And SUCH a beautiful sunny warm day. Spring is radiating from the sky and earth.

I’ve been wanting to see what this shredding is all about for a while and decided today was the perfect day to do an at-home workout. I found it at You Tube and just had to switch between sessions mid-way through. I decided to start at Level 3 because I wanted it to either be really hard or not do it at all. You guys have been saying it’s “sooo hard” so I wanted to see the hardest part!

Verdict: I liked it a lot!

Here are my HRM stats:

Time: 27:50

In Zone: 9:01

Avg HR: 115

Max HR: 164 (mid jump squat!?)

Kcal: 124

 • I liked the boot camp style of cardio (mountain climbers, jumping squats, jumping lunges) which really did get my heart rate up. I do that kind of stuff at the gym in between weights sometimes.
 • I liked the pace – not too much of one thing to get bored. But on the other hand, my HR dropped a ton in the ab sessions. Wish they were all at the end.
 • I didn’t think the weight lifting part was that challenging. The only time I felt like quitting was mid-way through the second set of walking push-ups!
 • I think it’s a great short workout for home use and will definitely do it again (so long as it stays on You Tube!)

After “shredding” I gathered my things and left for the grocery store – in run form. I have a lightweight bag that goes over your shoulders Camelback-style and tied that close to my body so I could run and go to the grocery store on the way home. I barely felt it. I took the long way to Harris Teeter (about 3 miles) and did my shopping and then walked home with this bouquet of flowers in hand:

Tonight’s party has a green and yellow theme!

I found these Better Whey Of Life yogurts on my doorstep. I’d just picked up some spinach for a salad, so I decided to have yogurt with it.

IMG_4313 (1024x768)

The Better Whey’s are regular yogurt enhanced with whey protein concentrate. They have:

 • 15-17g of protein per 6 oz cup
 • 30% less sugar than most flavored yogurts (which I liked a lot!)
 • Probiotics
 • 3 grams fiber

IMG_4318 (1024x768)

Ingredients look pretty good too:

IMG_4319 (1024x768)

I decided on the Strawberry-Banana to have with cantaloupe.

IMG_4317 (1024x768)

Verdict: Nice! I am a plain yogurt girl through and through but I do like a flavored yogurt every now and then. I love that these were not too sweet at all – more flavor, less sugar. As a result you could taste more of the yogurt flavor, which gave it a slight tang that you don’t normally find in other flavored yogurts. But I liked it a lot. Can’t wait to try the Mango Peach because those are my favorites. I wish I could have tried the Plain. I’ll have to look for it.

IMG_4323 (1024x768)

Served with a 1/3 cup or so of the end of the box of Optimum Slim. I LOVED that cereal. I loved that it was corny like some of the cereals of my childhood but also had a bunch of different types of cereal mixed in – puffs, high fiber twigs, etc. Definitely on my “to buy” list if I ever run out of my current cereal stock! (Along with Quaker Oatmeal Squares, AgavePlus Granola, and Kashi GoLean crunch – my favorites).

IMG_4321 (1024x768)

I actually didn’t finish all of this bowl because I was so full from my salad – which I ate first.

IMG_4320 (1024x768)

Just like this morning’s breakfast post, I’m moving backwards with lunch! I ate this salad first:

IMG_4322 (1024x768)

Spinach, carrot, green pepper, tomato, avocado, feta, wasabi peas and some Woodstock dressing.

IMG_4315 (1024x768)

I think I got a little too much sun on my arms today :( I enjoyed lunch with a Country Living magazine.

IMG_4314 (1024x768)

Lucky Taste Buds!!!

Another cereal to add to the list: I just found out I won Michelle’s Zoe’s giveaway!!!!!!!! I’ve never had Zoe’s and so many of you eat it. Can’t wait to give it a try!

Off to set up more of the party stuff. Gosh it feels like a Saturday. A shame I have to go to lab in the AM!

Man you are always winning blog contests! I think they are rigged! ;)

Welcome to the world of shred! I have fallen in love with Jillian Michaels (tee hee!) she is SMART. I had no idea. I’ve been listening to the podcasts of her radio show during my workouts lately. She has a lot of good things to say on fitness, nutrition and wellness. http://www.kfi640.com/pages/jillian.html Very motivating and informational too!

WOW! All so colorful!
I agree about the Abs section of The Shred (which I LOVE!). I actually started doing it without the abs, just cardio + strength, and then doing my own abs routine once its over.

Glad you tried out the Shred! I actually think that some parts of Level 2 are harder than Level 3 … I also use 5 lb dumbells and often wish I had a heavier set for the moves that I find to be really easy. I usually burn 170-200 cals, so I LOVE doing this before heading to the gym and getting a start on the burn :)

I agree too about the abs section of the Shred, it feels just like boot camp until that point.

Just FYI…I did the shred for about 6 mos. and then I got bored of it and I never got sore anymore. Luckily, Jillian just came out with a new strength circuit training video called No More Trouble Zones and it is KILLER! It works out Upper, ABS, and Lower body and I am sore in a way I never have been and I love it. I recommend that you try it out. Thanks!

Oh, Kath, what a beautiful day! That flower is brilliant and happy! I’ve really wanted to try these whey yogurts, so thank you for your review. I see those yummy wasabi peas…Have you tried wasabi dry roasted edamame? I think the brand is West Point, but they are delicious! Enjoy the rest of the afternoon!

I’m a little depressed at your Shredding stats. For all that cursing and sweating, I’d like to think I’m burning more than 124 calories! :)

so nice that you ran to the grocery store, I never thought about doing that, and then walking home. Riding my bike is out of the question its all down hill to the market, and then all UP hill on the way back!

You’re lucky to have a grocery store located so close by! What a great way to get some exercise in the nice weather.

That yogurt looks so good! I’ll have to look around for it.

I totally agree with you on your cereal choices. Optimum Slim and Quaker Squares are two of my all-time favorites.

Beautiful flowers!

I gave up on Shred b/c it’s so boring. But it is good for a quickie routine at home if you need one, I guess.

Have fun with the fam!

Hi Kath! I’ve been reading your blog and love it! I also use Jillians Shred from youtube from time to time. I’m not sure if you’ve heard of http://keepvid.com/ or not, but its a site that allows you to download youtube videos to your computer (probably not legal lol). That way you would have the video just in case they take it off.

Great work!

What is it with people today?? Why are they being so RUDE, like the commenter above? Some people need to take a mjor chill pill!

Uhhh seriously commenter #24? What do you mean she evaluates its “righteousness”? She just eats what she likes, and she likes the healthy stuff…plus a lot of people read this and want to know her opinion. So she rates it for us!

I just did the Shred for the first time today too!! I really liked it! It will be a good workout to do before my 12 hour workdays:)

Lunch looked great too! Do you know where they carry those Whey Yogurts??

Reply

26 Kate (Foodie on a Mission) April 9, 2009 at 6:21 pm

Mmm… your lunch looks so “spring-y”. =)

I’ve seen those Better Whey yogurts too, but I tend to shy away because of all the added sugars, “flavors”, and gelatin. Cascade Fresh has a line of flavored yogurt that is only sweetened with fruit concentrate – you should check them out. They’re really good and you could never tell they’re any different from traditional sweetened yogurt.

I am craving that salad over here in Thailand. I can not wait to get home on Sunday and make a big salad, eat oatmeal and some strong coffee.

A week of meetings and food poisoning has left me vitamin/energy depleated. Good news the hotel has a spa. so tonight its indian spice bath, green tea wrap and a thai herbal healer masasage.

Its nice to be able to read your blog from here

Your breakfast looks wonderful. Natural light does so much for photographs.

You found Shredding on YouTube? That’s great to know. I’ve been wanting to try it but my library doesn’t have it yet. I’ll have to check it out.

Just an fyi, i am 99% sure kosher gelatin means made with fish…don’t mean to ruin your yogurt experience Kath, I’m all about whey protein. And your shred review just makes me think you are in really good shape, not that the shred isn’t difficult! Looks like another beauuutiful lunch!

Ali ,
Very cool – going to check it out!

WendyF ,
Food poisoning! Ack! Hope that spa makes it better.

Lisa D,
I’m not sure what you mean? I don’t think kosher means “made with fish?”
