stopping by woods on a snowy afternoon

January 27, 2011

PhotosB (6)

Have I mentioned how much I love walking!?

The first few months we lived here were warm and it was all bike, bike, bike. But not that the cold makes pedaling at 26 mph unbearable, walking has become necessary and I’ve realized how much I prefer it to biking. I can check my email, talk on the phone, carry my camera safely on my back and enjoy the sights. I hope when it warms up I can continue the trend!

The walk to Karen’s – about 2 miles – was so pretty with our melting snow.

I hung out with her for a while [and taught her things on her computer!] before we headed out to restaurant week at Brasserie Montiel.

We enjoyed some drinks. A Cab for me

PhotosA (5)

And this beautiful stemless martini for Karen

Along with our own personal loaf of gooey bread!

First Course

I LOVED the gorgonzola!!

Main Course

The trout was incredible!!!

PhotosB (4)

It came with broc

PhotosA (2)

The fluffiest, chewiest wild rice. Wish I had thought to ask them the brand!

PhotosA (3)

My favorite part. Sorbet never appears to me in restaurants (I’d rather go for the ganache cake or buttercream!) but tonight they were calling my name and they were absolutely refreshing!

Karen’s tiramisu wasn’t half bad either!

We enjoyed some decaf coffees for dessert. A nice ending touch!

Miles to go before I sleep…

OOOh this food looks delicious! Sounds like a lovely evening spent with good company :)

3 ashley@quasichick January 27, 2011 at 10:54 pm

I am in love with tiramisu! Beautiful pictures!

4 Darcy @ She Sings at the Table January 27, 2011 at 10:54 pm

Walking is the absolute best :) You notice so many things about your neighborhood that just whoosh right by when you’re in a car.

5 Jil @ Big City, Lil Kitchen January 27, 2011 at 10:55 pm

That meal sounds absolutely delicious!

6 Courtney @ the granola chronicles January 27, 2011 at 10:56 pm

Everything looks so good. I love finishing dessert with coffee.

And I’m enjoying a glass of cab right now. Perfect for a Thursday night! :)

7 Namaste Gurl January 27, 2011 at 10:56 pm

I love walking too- it’s so much more mindful and peaceful. When I run, I don’t take the time to enjoy my surroundings and what’s around me. Glad you enjoyed your dinner with your mama in law! :)

8 mindy @ just a one girl revolution. January 27, 2011 at 10:57 pm

That first pic is absolutely breathtaking! So beautiful!!

9 Jo @ Jo's Diet Journey January 27, 2011 at 10:59 pm

That dinner looks delicious! Especially the trout and wild rice! What a great Thursday night out :)

10 Coco @ Opera Girl Cooks January 27, 2011 at 11:01 pm

Looks like a beautiful walk and an amazing meal! I’ve got to start packing more gourmet homemade food for school so I can quit having delicious-food-blog-envy!

11 Anne (butter and bear) January 27, 2011 at 11:06 pm

Dinner looks delicious, especially the gooey bread. Please tell me you didn’t walk home in the dark after dinner. I love walking too, but not alone at night.

12 KathEats January 28, 2011 at 9:51 am

No – Karen drove me back

13 Kristen, Sweetly January 27, 2011 at 11:08 pm

I’m glad to hear you weren’t trying to check your email while biking, haha. Those photos really are beautiful, so definitely worth the walk.

14 Hannah January 27, 2011 at 11:14 pm

Pear, pistachio, and gorgonzola? I want I want!

15 Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) January 27, 2011 at 11:18 pm

I love long walks. And altho I hate winter…there is something so tranquil and peaceful about winter walks..and these winter pics. Just divine, Kath! Way to rock your inner photographer! :)

16 Dorry January 27, 2011 at 11:20 pm

What a fabulous dinner. I love that you and Karen are hanging out…I’m sure you’re missing Matt! I’m with you on the walking in the cold weather, but it’s finally been warm enough the past couple of days in Dallas for a bike ride. :)

17 Sana January 27, 2011 at 11:21 pm

I love walking in the cold when I am properly dressed. When I am not, I am a pissy bitch!

18 Valerie @ City|Life|Eats January 27, 2011 at 11:23 pm

Dinner look scrumptious!

19 Kat @ Cupcake Kat January 27, 2011 at 11:27 pm

What a wonderful walk. I also love going for walks. Dinner looks great

20 Christin@purplebirdblog January 27, 2011 at 11:39 pm

Absolutely gorgeous set of photos!!

21 Runeatrepeat January 27, 2011 at 11:43 pm

I want my own loaf of bread!!! (Yes, that deserved 3 exclamation points.)

22 Katy (The Singing Runner) January 28, 2011 at 12:00 am

Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening is my favorite Robert Frost poem. 😉

Dinner looks delicious!!! 😀

23 KathEats January 28, 2011 at 9:51 am

Mine too!

24 Alaina January 28, 2011 at 12:12 am

There really is nothing like your own loaf of bread at the table.

That’s awesome to see how close you are to your mother in law. :-)

25 Beatrix @ Beaglebea January 28, 2011 at 12:13 am

Such beautiful pictures.. that’s one of the things I love about walking and exploring as well. And that tiramisu is awesome favorite dessert.

26 Kate (What Kate is Cooking) January 28, 2011 at 12:22 am

You always go to the best restaurants! It makes me want to go to Charlottesville :)

27 Kiran January 28, 2011 at 12:30 am

I want that trout!!! Looks so delish :) I am a sucker for anything fish. As long as it’s not raw.

28 Bronwyn Coyne January 28, 2011 at 12:37 am

I can’t decide what I want more.
The bread
The wild rice
or the Tiramisu.
Hmmmmm delicious looking.

29 Jackie @ Seejacrun January 28, 2011 at 12:40 am

These pictures all look amazing! I love the first one especially with the sun shinning behind the trees, so beautiful! Ohhhh and that wild rice looks so good :)

30 Erica D (Gratitouille) January 28, 2011 at 1:09 am

Walking is so beautiful when you have poetry in your head :)

31 Kim M. January 28, 2011 at 1:16 am

Love your Frost reference. What a cozy post!

32 Camille January 28, 2011 at 1:46 am

That bread looks out of this world!

33 Justeen @ Blissful Baking January 28, 2011 at 2:13 am

I really enjoy walking too – I love being outside in the crisp air! It’s so refreshing!

34 Ellie@fitforthesoul January 28, 2011 at 2:26 am

You just find the coolest restaurants Kath! The trout looks amazing. Was it really creamy since it’s beurre blanc? or just right? I’d like to make something of that sort.

35 KathEats January 28, 2011 at 9:52 am

It was the perfect beurre because it was thick! I’m sure there was lots of butter, but I don’t like them when they’re like liquid butter dripping off.

36 notyet100 January 28, 2011 at 2:38 am

so true miles to go before i sleep…

37 Janna January 28, 2011 at 3:21 am

Yeah! You finally got your trout! It looks delicious too!$
T-minus 4 days (and counting) till I leave for Asheville! I am getting excited!

38 KathEats January 28, 2011 at 9:52 am

Ha! Yes!! Too bad it wasn’t a MT trout :(

39 Christina January 28, 2011 at 5:43 am

Sounds like fun! (But if you’re biking at 26 mph, you need to give up blogging and become a pro cyclist- you’d kick some butt.)

40 KathEats January 28, 2011 at 9:52 am

41 Lauren January 28, 2011 at 6:15 am

WHat a wonderful dining experience. I love restaurant weeks!

42 chelsey @ clean eating chelsey January 28, 2011 at 7:21 am

I love that poem – in my class we do poem recitations every week, and my 5th graders had to recite this poem before Winter Break!

43 Lauren at KeepItSweet January 28, 2011 at 7:22 am

I never believe in sorbet when I go out to eat, but I can see how it would be refreshing.

44 Katherine: Unemployed January 28, 2011 at 7:25 am

I love that martini glass; what is the proper way to drink out of it?

45 KathEats January 28, 2011 at 9:53 am

You lifted the cone out of the stemless wine glass to sip

46 Holly @ Couch Potato Athlete January 28, 2011 at 7:31 am

That wild rice looks unbelievable!!! Oh and the tirimisu obviously!

I can’t wait until the snow/ice melts a bit more and I can get out and walk — some sidewalks aren’t quite clear and I’m way too much of a wimp to brave the ice!

47 Paige @Running Around Normal January 28, 2011 at 7:32 am

Beautiful trail pictures – wow!
How nice of you to take Karen out to dinner. It looks fabulous!

48 megan @ blackberries for jam January 28, 2011 at 7:33 am

This is my idea of a perfect evening!

49 Lauren Slayton January 28, 2011 at 7:44 am

First, that’s one of my favorite poems. I have to go and read it. Second, as a dietitian is it wrong that I was most excited about that martini? Yikes and still “miles to go before I sleep.”

50 Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin January 28, 2011 at 7:58 am

I usually hate walking in the winter because of the cold, but your pictures are making me reconsider. It looks so calm and pretty!

51 Jess (Sweet Potato) January 28, 2011 at 8:03 am

Yum, I love good wild rice! Looks like a great meal, isnt restaurant week the best?!

52 Angie January 28, 2011 at 8:09 am

Yay for Robert Frost!

53 Allie January 28, 2011 at 8:10 am

I do enjoy walking too! I wish I lived close to more of my friends/family/town but it is nice to walk my dog each day! Your dinner, every morsel of food, looks so good!!!

54 Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat January 28, 2011 at 8:12 am

Oh wow, the trout and rice both sound amazing. Love the first photo Kath, it’s gorgeous!

55 Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg January 28, 2011 at 8:20 am

Yes, I LOVE walking!!! There’s something about walking in the winter that is so soul-soothing!

56 Stacie @ Imperfectly Healthy January 28, 2011 at 8:28 am

I’m also a huge fan of walking! I think it’s vastly underrated!

57 Barbara(Blood, Sweat and Heels) January 28, 2011 at 8:34 am

What a lovely dinner:) Moscato poached pear?!?!?! Swoon!

58 Amy January 28, 2011 at 8:34 am

What walking trail is that? It’s lovely!!

I love the Brasserie – we have brunch there every Sunday. Delish!

59 Hope January 28, 2011 at 8:38 am

What a fun night! The food looks delicious and you take such beautiful pictures! :)

60 Jessica January 28, 2011 at 8:42 am

My wild rice never looks that good, or that fluffy :(
You should go back just to find out how they got it so perfect!

61 Liz @ Tip Top Shape January 28, 2011 at 8:50 am

Such beautiful pictures!! It has to be cold, though, on all those long walks of yours! How do you keep warm?

62 KathEats January 28, 2011 at 9:54 am

I’m really rarely cold on my walks!! My down coat from Lands End keeps me super warm – all through Montana -10* too! I always wear gloves and usually a scarf too

63 Eileen January 28, 2011 at 9:02 am

That looks like a lovely evening. The presentation of the pear/prosciutto dish is so pretty. And, I don’t like martinis, but that cute glass *almost* makes me want one.

64 inspir-ed January 28, 2011 at 9:10 am

The boyfriend and I are headed to a Hoboken Restaurant Week pick tonight. You’ve certainly whet my appetite for a yummy dinner this evening! And perhaps a martini…

65 Kristina January 28, 2011 at 9:13 am

Your snowy walk pictures are GORGEOUS. They make me want to go for a snowy walk in the woods right now… :)

66 Katie @ peacebeme January 28, 2011 at 9:30 am

That’s one of my favorite poems, it makes me feel brave.

I like how you changed the font on the courses/menu for us. It was much easier to read. :)

Have an awesome Friday!

67 anne January 28, 2011 at 9:39 am

You’re absolutely right, walking is wonderful! Even in winter it is so refreshing. I love all of your photos in this post.

68 stacey-healthylife January 28, 2011 at 9:39 am

What a great time. It’s so nice that your so close with your mother in law.

69 kate January 28, 2011 at 9:40 am

That meal looks divine!

70 Amanda January 28, 2011 at 9:41 am

I love that poem! We sang it in Women’s Ensemble when I was in high school…not a bad song to be stuck in my head now on a snowy Friday morning. :)

71 Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table January 28, 2011 at 9:42 am

Is it sad that I saw the title of this post and began reciting the Robert Frost poem? How do we remember these things from 6th grade?!

Great pics! The meal looks amazing. Don’t you (or Karen) LOVE those martini glasses? Nothing worse than a hot martini. 😉

72 KathEats January 28, 2011 at 9:53 am

I had to memorize SBWOASE in 7th grade and still know it by heart toO!

73 lindsay January 28, 2011 at 9:53 am

Love that 2nd picture!!

74 Sarah January 28, 2011 at 9:59 am

Mmm…your whole post makes me feel all warm and toasty inside. (Even though you were walking in the cold. I think you just did a great job of “selling it.”) :-)

75 Gwen January 28, 2011 at 12:18 pm

Wow – simply gorgeous! Hubs and I need to get to Charlotesville in the winter! I’ve only been once! And that loaf of bread. WOWSA! I’m going to dinner for Restaurant Week in Alexandria tonight – if they brought a loaf like that to the table I’d be done for!

76 Clare @ Fitting It All In January 28, 2011 at 12:31 pm

I went to St. Louis Restaurant Week last night with my brother! I got a great peice of fish as well as some home-made raspberry sorbet! Two peas in a pod:)

77 Erin @ The Grass Skirt January 28, 2011 at 12:31 pm

So beautiful. You have such a way of storytelling through your pictures…and you always make me wish that I was there too! :)

78 Allison @ Happy Tales January 28, 2011 at 1:11 pm

That sorbet DOES sound really yummy… good choice!

79 Christine @ What The Front Door?!?! January 28, 2011 at 1:34 pm

I totally check my email while walking, too. I’ve tripped a time or two. 😉
