Sportin’ Strength and Spirals

March 11, 2010

Ended professional day with a talk on Epigenetics and called it a day. I did stop by the Juice Plus booth and tried some gummies made from vegetables and fruits. They tasted great, but not as great as kale and brussels and broccoli do chompin’ in my mouth!

photo

I got weirdly hungry around 3 during the talk but then when I headed home it went away. Typical hunger. But I did get to finally try that Tropical Fruit Larabar!!!

larabar

I was very skeptical that I’d like it because I don’t really like fruity flavored things that much, but WOW. It was awesome!! I was expecting it to be tart like lemon, but it was very orangey and the pineapple was great. If the other fruit Larabars are brownies (from dates) this guy was a blondie!

I went home, changed and raced over to Emily’s for a workout!!

We went for a 4 mile run before we buckled down to do some mega weight lifting. We did this set through twice. 15 reps the first time though and “as many as we could do” the second.

IMG_3474 (800x600)

I got my stressful “I gotta finish this before dinner” blog work on while Casey and Emily cooked dinner!!!

IMG_7729 (640x427)

So nice of them :)

IMG_7728 (427x640)

IMG_7757 (640x427)

I brought over a spiralizer I got from Open Sky! Would you guys want that in my store?

It was super cool!

IMG_7726 (640x427)

We spiraled sweet potatoes and baked them like curly fries!!

IMG_7743 (427x640)

IMG_7746 (640x427)

IMG_7751 (640x427)

Casey whipped up some Chinese spiced brussels

IMG_7744 (640x427) IMG_7748 (640x427) (2) IMG_7749 (640x427)

Homemade sauce!

IMG_7745 (640x427)

And Emily cooked quinoa, apples and almonds in her rice cooker. I’d kinda like one of those…

IMG_7752 (640x427)

Dinner was SO GOOD!

IMG_7765 (640x427) (2)

IMG_7756 (640x427)

The potatoes were still sort of soft, but they were so fun to eat!

IMG_7758 (640x427) (2)

We added some organic ketchup with the potatoes. It was just OK. Tasted too much like tomato sauce!

IMG_7766 (640x427) (2)

IMG_7761 (640x427) (2)

I am not a huge fan of quinoa. It’s kind of airy and the flavor has never bowled me over. But this was awesome! Maybe I need to alter my cooking method..

IMG_7759 (640x427) (2)

The brussels were spicy and perfectly cooked!!

IMG_7760 (640x427)

Even the brown dog enjoyed our dinner!

IMG_7762 (640x427)

IMG_7753 (640x427) (2)

Like my Nutrition Facts glass!?

Round II

Remember the Quaker “Create Your Day” challenge? Good Bite and Quaker raised $25,000 for Share Our Strength in just 3 weeks. Quaker was so impressed they decided to do a round 2 – 25,000 more creations = 25,000 more dollars! Let’s give it another go!

So I got the word that the internet is down at our house. This could be a big blogging problem in the AM! I’ll do an iPhone post if that’s the case, but if I’m missing, that’s what’s going on.

Almost Friday!!!

I’ve never even seen a spiralizer before! How neat! I’m not really a fan of quinoa either. I think I just try to make it too healthy. I just don’t add enough stuff to it to make it taste good :)

Reply

I don’t count calories anymore (although I did during my original weight loss). I try to focus on intuitive eating and making the healthiest choices possible.

27 Caroline (Ribbons, Roads, and Raspberries) March 11, 2010 at 10:00 pm

Haha, I can think of very few people who would have a nutrition facts glass.

Did the curly fry sweet potatoes taste as good as “fries” or plain baked ones?? Maybe there’s a tool that can cut them into thicker strips that maintain some firmness…

Reply

28 Kath March 12, 2010 at 8:43 am

Not as good as fries, but still fun to eat and yummy

Reply

29 Sabina March 11, 2010 at 10:03 pm

get yourself a rice cooker! mine is indispensable and speeds up dinner cooking – cook your grains in the rice cooker and steam your veggies with the steamer on top.

as for the quinoa, cook it with stock, a few veggies, and some herbs/spices; this definitely makes it more appealing. :-)

I, too, love the glass! Where’s that one from? Also, the sweet-potato-curly-fries thing is a great idea. If only they were a little skinnier and more “convincing”… I can definitely see that as a good way to force reluctant men and/or children to eat it. :)

I must say that I just tried that trop fruit LB bar and thought it was one of the most disgusting things I have ever eaten, hehe :) I thought the pineapple was waaay overwhelming + fake tasting and it was dry + almost crumbly. Chris hated it too and typically loves those tropical flavors. So it was quite funny to read that you loved it so much!! eeeeek!! That dinner however looks and sounds amazing. LOVE the sweet tater chips and I completely love quinoa. I made the most amazing quinoa breakfast bowl back in Charlotte…with coconut milk instead of water and topped it with fresh fruits/yogurt/nuts/etc. SO good!!

Try chili garlic sauce as a dipper next time. It is super flavorful and packs way more of a punch than ketchup! It goes great with baked sweet potato chips.

i have become obsessed with all this amazing cooking blogs! and yesterday night i made your sweet potato gnocchi, or “ñoquis de boniato”, as we would say here.
they were a success even if i had to adapt the recipe just a little bit, like adding a tomato and cream sauce.
about the quinoa: in 2008 my boyfriend and i went to north argentina and tried quinoa there, in desserts, in salads, in almost everything! they told us that quinoa was much like rice, that it could be used in many meals and that quinoa was a sacred grain for the incas.
so, despite its taste, or exactly because it has so little taste, it is versatile and can be used in a pudding much as it can be used in a salad or with stewed meat.

here, a link to quinoa, if you can find someone who translates it
http://www.montevideo.com.uy/notgastronomia_76448_1.html

In english try this, not the same but it sums up some facts about it: http://www.grain.org/briefings/?id=141#p24
take care and keep cooking!! :)
