So This Fig Walked Into A Bar

September 6, 2010

And we have a winner!!!

IMG_0605 (640x480)

12PM Vinyasa Power Hour with Annie was AWESOME. Because the class was just an hour, we said one OM and got right to business – vinyasas, warriors, half moons, eagles – the works!

I conquered the 3 things I hope to leave every yoga class with: sweat, shakes, peace

And it’s awesome that this class is offered 4 days a week at noon – which is a great time for me to take a break from my day. Hopefully all the teachers are as cool :)

I biked there – about a 15 minute trip and back. [Don't laugh at my socks + shoes. Practicality > fashion today]

IMG_0604 (480x640)

Matt was my escort! He went out biking himself while I was at yoga and picked me up so we could ride back together.

IMG_0603 (480x640)

We quickly showered, then lunch.

IMG_2628 (640x427)

We had toast with egg as the centerpiece

IMG_2629 (640x427)

The egg was pan-cooked and stuffed with a few slivers of jack cheese.

Underneath the egg was a Pear Fig Jam I’ve been digging that came as an OpenSky opportunity. Opportunity –> Success. It’s the bomb!! Find it here: Pear Fig Jam.

IMG_2634 (640x427)

The the side, more figs. This time with spinach, pepper, cuc, almonds and sea salt dressed in balsamic and some maple syrup. Everything is better with maple!

Nectarines just don’t appeal as much as apples these days…

What a lovely sounding yoga class! I love it when yoga gets right down to business. No fooling around. :D

Also, I won’t laugh at your socks and shoes, because I would definitely do the same thing as needed. You can’t beet practicality sometimes. ;)

I love the flavor of figs! I have a jar of unopened fig preserves that I can’t wait to delve into. I hear it makes an excellent marinade component.

I have had the same issue with crunchy apples appealing much more than summer stone fruit of late — this even coming from a summer person — and the temperature hasn’t dropped at all yet. Some kind of odd body clock? Strange!

Hey there, I’m really curious and since I’m shopping for a new one, what kind of bike does Matt ride (and does he recommend it)? I can’t tell if that’s a road bike or some sort of hybrid. Any help would be most appreciated, thanks and keep up the awesome blog!

Reply

40 Matt September 6, 2010 at 7:37 pm

It’s a Novara Buzz, which comes from REI. I believe it’s a hybrid, but may be a road bike. Amazingly, a friend GAVE it to me, and not just that, he put on completely new rims and spokes for me. I actually don’t know how much upgrading he did to the bike, so I don’t know what are its original components. I love it for several reasons:

1) It has disc brakes – I never knew what I was missing.
2) It has a really forward-inclined riding position – took some getting used to, but it’s so fast.
3) Horns on the handle bars make a huge difference.

Other than those things, it’s just a great bike with great parts. It’s so powerful that my first week of owning it I was really going heavy and seeing how fast I could get it, and I noticed that my back was hurting. I thought it was because of the new riding position, but I realized that I was just pulling so hard on the handlebars that I was straining my back in some weird new way.

If you’re not really sure what you want, or you expect to have a multi-use bike (commuting, errands, exercise) then check out the Trek 7.X line. They have lots of options and somebody at a bike store can help you find what you need.

Great tips, thanks Matt!

I’m looking to replace my old mountain bike (that thing has been through the ringer). Ideally I’d like a bike with some speed but also rugged enough to handle gravel paths, the occasional shortcut across grass, or hop a curb without caving in on me. I’ve been hesitant about a full blown road bike because I can’t stand the narrow ram-horn handlebars (I can barely steer straight as it is with a straight bar), and also know the skinny tires will get eaten alive on gravel.

Your bike looked like a great option. How does it handle unpaved routes? I’ll be sure to take your suggestion on the disc breaks, horns on the handlebars, and Trek line, thanks again.

42 Matt September 7, 2010 at 9:07 am

My bike’s not that comfortable on unpaved. Its wheels are somewhere between a typical hybrid bike and a road bike, so pretty thin. Gravel paths are annoying. Dirt paths aren’t bad, but I do have some slipping. If you had the men’s version of Kath’s bike (Trek 7.2), I think you could do the kind of things you’re talking about. And upgrading to the 7.3 or higher only gets you better components.

On a side note, when we were looking for a bike for Kath, we also looked at some Gary Fischer models, and they had one that was comparable to a Trek 7.3 but was at least $100 cheaper. Ultimately the frame didn’t feel right on her, but it was a good bike.

Everything IS better with maple. :-) I just made my first-ever real maple syrup purchase while I was in the Poconos for the holiday. I got a little pot of “medium,” and a vat of Grade B because I kept reading about it. The guy behind the table actually poured me little cupfuls and told me I had to compare. So I drank maple syrup. Talk about a healthy weekend! Haha. They were so crazy delicious, though. I can’t wait to drizzle them on everything.
