I’m behind schedule, but trucking along.
I got up at 6:30 and did 20 minutes of Yoga For Runners. I thought it would be better as a warm up than a cool down, and I was right. It was energizing for my run! So was watching Angela’s latest running form posts. I tried to focus on kicking butt!
I set out on a sunrise 4 miles around my neighborhoods that was filled with smells! (You guys know I have a supersmeller nose!) I smelled:
- Laundry detergent
- Bacon
- Refried beans (??)
- Channel Allure (that was me!!)
- Honeysuckle
- Grass
My run was a good one. Stats:
- Total: 4.4 miles, 38:00 mins
- Mile 1: 8:52
- Mile 2: 8:33
- Mile 3: 8:53 (including a jog in place to cross the street)
- Mile 4: 8:35
After a shower, I made a big bowl to carry me through the morning and my exam:
The keys for satiety for me are:
- High Fiber
- High Protein
- High Fat
- High Volume
ALL TOGETHER. One or the other won’t do much, 2 at a time is better, but all 4 is key. This bowl had all 4
The mix:
- 1 carton Better Whey of Life (protein + volume)
- 1/2 banana (volume + fiber)
- 3 strawberries (volume + fiber)
- 1/3 cup blackberries (volume + fiber)
- 1 tbsp flax (fiber + fat + some protein)
- 2 tbsp wheatberries (fiber + some protein)
- 1/3 cup Uncle Sams (fiber + protein)
- 1 tbsp almonds (fat + protein)
- Spoonful Naturally More (fat + deliciousness)
FYI: About 500 calories. Lots of the rest.
Had a half cup of coffee to not throw off my day –
See y’all when 1 is down!

Sounds like a fantastic run and great breakfast! You should be energized for your exam–hope it goes well!
Haha, I love the peanut butter’s nutritional contribution to the meal.
Deliciousness IS important!
haha refried beans is an odd one! good luck on your first exam!
That bowl looks so filling!
My favorite things to smell when running: laundry, bbqs, and firewood burning!
I love the way it smells outside in the early morning….
Good luck on your tests!
Hi Kath!
Your backyard looks like such a relaxing place for breakfast, I wish I had a yard!
About your morning workouts- I have heard time and time again that we are supposed to eat breakfast first thing upon waking up, before working out. I think the reason is because if you don’t, it supposedly slows your metabolism. I see you workout first before eating, what do you know that I don’t?
Thanks!
hahaha I can’t stop laughing @ Refried beans…..the randomness!!
Glad you liked the running posts- I have lots of work to do! And more videos to come! I need to do a front view and back view too.
Goodluck today!
Good luck on #1! I can’t stand smelling bacon when I run, gah!
Good luck today, Kath!
Very impressed with your mile stats, too.
Great run!!
And lovely breakfast
Best of luck on the exams today!
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm! perfect run and breakfast. i have full confidence you will continue to kick butt right through the exam!
oats look DELISH! Nice work on the run
Good luck on your exams!! You’ll be great
Wow Kath, great run!
Your yoga mess is all crazy kinds of awesomeness. Do you keep a piece of paper in the kitchen while you’re making your mixes so you can write down everything you put in them?! Haha. I find that I do that because sometimes I just can’t remember every component!
Hope you have a great Wednesday, and good luck!
Good luck with your tests! You’ll rock! I am right there with you on needing fiber, some fat, and volume to be totally satiated! Great run!! By the way, hop on over to my site today and add your favorite recipe! I bet you have some great ones:) I’m trying to build some awareness even though mine is only in the beginning stages!
What a great start to your day! Hope it’s a great one!
mm….bacon
good luck on your tests and studying today! love the breakfast mix. I need to try that uncle sams.
Great run! Your times are really good:) I always smell random things on my runs too. Yesterday I kept smelling roses but had not idea where it was coming from! That was a really good smell though!!
What a strange mix of smells.
Good luck on today’s exams!
Gosh that bowl looks good!
Did you really smell refried beans on yoru run this morning? that’s hilarious!
Good luck on exam #1! It is so awesome that you know what your body needs to get you through a morning and know exactly how to best meet those needs. I am still trying to figure that all out – trial and error. I am glad you added the fifth important breakfast component = deliciousness! :p
Wow! That is a loaded bowl!
Good luck with the exam!
Looks like a great start!
Ha ha. Sometimes my neighborhood smells like random food too.

Refried beans?
WoooAAAHH – sweet, big bowl! What a treat
I love the breakdown of the benefits of each component of breakfast! It looks awesome.
Who’s eating refried beans for breakfast? Actually, that’s not a bad idea…
Good luck today, Kath!
GOOD LUCK!!
Good luck on your exams! I feel like I always smell people doing laundry in our neighborhood.
That bowl looks so good. I make cereal/fruit mixes every morning and never get tired of them.
Great run, great breakfast! Good luck on your exam, you’ll do great on that too!
Refried beans are great for breakfast, I eat them with poached eggs and corn tortillas
We eat them alot here on the Left Coast.
Good luck on your exam!
Today is a long work out day for me, I lost 6 colleages that I had work with for over 8 years to layoffs. A long long run might help.
I think I have a super smeller nose too! I always know exactly what I’m smelling on my runs
I love running smells! I can always tell what people are having for dinner. Yet another reason why outdoor runs beat the treadmill.
Good luck with your exam! I’m sure you’ll do great!
Good luck on your exam Kath, I know you’ll do a great job!
Good luck on the exam! Such a pretty breakfast bowl this morning!
I totally agree with your key satiety points… I am the exact same way. What a PERFECT way to start out the morning before a big test. Good luck!
I’ve been smelling manure all week when I work out! Yuck.
Good luck on the exam!
Great breakfast for fueling up! Good luck!
Thanks for all the luck guys!!
Emily,
Your breakfast rumors are mostly a way to keep people from skipping breakfast. In terms of exercise, you only NEED a pre-workout snack if you are going to be exercising for over 60-90 minutes intensely. Otherwise, only eat one if you want one. I find I wake up “hungry” but it’s really just thirst. I drink a glass of water and am fine for a morning workout and then have breakfast right after.

Can you ask me again when finals over? Then I’ll have time to do lots of things!
Kath
Your oatmeal looks delicious! I’ve been trying to eat more intuitively lately – breakfast, lunch, dinner with a few snacks when I need them. Balanced meals. But I still always think in Weight Watcher terms when I look at food. I know it’s not the amount of “points” that matters, but the quality of the food and how long it’ll fill you up, so I was surprised to see your breakfast was roughly 500 calories. I would love to try it, but I’m not sure if my head would let me! LOL!
However, you are inspiring me to try new oatmeal mixes, that’s for sure.
In response to eating before a workout, I always eat something really light, like half of a Lara bar. I’m not a morning person, but get up to run. I find I have more energy if I get *something* in me.
Good luck with the rest of your exams!
Kristilyn (The Food Journey),
It is a lot of calories for breakfast, but after a hard workout and to fill you up for 4-5 hours, and as 1/3 of your daily calories, it goes a long way. You’d probably be surprised how much less hungry you will be mid-morning.
Kath
Do you just cook a bunch of wheatberries ahead of time and keep them in the fridge?
