Sing It Girl!

August 24, 2011

Say farewell to Allie! Her summer at GH Cville has come to an end. We will miss her daily laugh (and daily oranges!)

Hannah will miss her most of all (PS. we didn’t plan the shirts!!)

Matt went home to chill this afternoon, and as part of our husband + wife contract, whoever isn’t at the bakery makes dinner. Most nights that is me, or we are both there, so it was a treat for me to close and come home to a Man Meal!

Not only did I walk in the door to a delicious meal – but my blog setting was all set up for me too – camera and all! So considerate of him : )

I picked up some chicken from the Organic Butcher the other day along with some Virginia potatoes and green beans. Along with the home-brewed beer, this meal was 100% local!

My half pint turned into a quarter pint when I tipped it :(

LOVE the rosemary olive oil chicken from the OB!

Beans cooked with some vinegar, garlic, salt and peppa

And fire-roasted taters [precious]

After dinner we walked to the UVA grounds for an A Capella Rotunda Sing!

We felt like we blended right in. Although I’m not sure Karen did (no offense Karen!)

We enjoyed hearing a wide variety of performances – I love music!

I get chills thinking about Thomas Jefferson founding this university so very long ago. I loved hearing the alma mater on the steps!

The real reason we went to the event was to see our employee Jenny and her group, the Virginia Belles!

Jenny actually had a SOLO, which made it extra exciting for us. And the song she sand – Lady Gaga’s “You and I,” which I absolutely loooooooooooove!

Sing it Jenny!! She was amazing, especially how they put “Virginia” in the song : )

Lastly, I really loved this crazy group of boys!!

Long walk home. Time for bed!

3 Sweet and Savvy August 24, 2011 at 10:08 pm

I’ve always wanted to see an a Capella rotunda scene! I need to visit uva!

4 Kim @ Spoonful of Sass August 24, 2011 at 10:08 pm

I love your appreciation for Jefferson! It’s so charlottesvillian of you!

5 KathEats August 24, 2011 at 10:10 pm

:) When I first heard that Monticello had a naturalization ceremony on the 4th of July, I thought it was to become a CVILLE citizen!! I was running to sign up. Karen + Matt still make fun of me.

6 Mollie August 25, 2011 at 8:43 am

8 Liv @ The Salty n' Sweet August 24, 2011 at 10:10 pm

I’m sure it’ll be sad when Allie is gone :(

But I love that you go to UVa events. The Virginia Gentlemen are my favorite, their voices are so amazing!

9 Meaghan O'Connor (My Spoonful of Inspiration) August 24, 2011 at 10:11 pm

I was in an a capella group in high school! So much fun and such a great, creative outlet! :)

10 Shaya August 24, 2011 at 10:11 pm

A Capella groups are so impressive to me! Crazy skillz!

12 Ali @ Peaches and Football August 24, 2011 at 10:13 pm

Wow that looks like the PERFECT place for a little concert! I love music too. I went and listened to the Mambo Kings a couple months ago and it made me realize how much I miss all the musicals I used to listen to as a kid… and still know every single word :)

13 Julie H. of Spinach and Sprinkles August 24, 2011 at 10:15 pm

Everyone will miss Alli at the bakery, even if we never actually ‘saw’ her there… Tonight looks great, especially the singing! :)

14 Meredith August 24, 2011 at 10:15 pm

That crazy group of boys is called “The Academical Village People” 😀 hehe

15 Kelsey @ My Search of Summer August 24, 2011 at 10:16 pm

So sad I missed Jennaaaay!!!

BYE!!!!! See you in Durham…?

20 Kate (What Kate is Cooking) August 24, 2011 at 10:46 pm

One of the main reasons I would love to live in Virginia is for all the history. Charlottesville sounds like such a fun city!

21 Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga August 24, 2011 at 10:49 pm

What a fun night and farewell to Allie. I’m sure it’s sad to see your employees move on, espi when they are fellow bloggers.

All the food looks great.. Matt is a good cook!

Glad you all had a great night out, too :)

22 Hannah August 24, 2011 at 11:23 pm

My heart aches! I miss UVA!

23 Sana August 24, 2011 at 11:26 pm

Karen totally fits in with the college kiddos 😉

24 Molly August 24, 2011 at 11:32 pm

I just graduated from UVA in May and this makes me miss it so much! Rotunda Sing is one of the best traditions there. The Academical Village People are hilarious!

25 lynn @ the actor's diet August 24, 2011 at 11:32 pm

i was the musical director of my a cappella group at wesleyan! we were called “onomatopoeia.” i miss all out cheesy songs!

26 Kristin August 24, 2011 at 11:33 pm

Sad to see Allie go…..:(

27 Maria August 24, 2011 at 11:42 pm

A Capella groups are a-mazing, especially while sitting outside on a warm summer evening! I want to go back to college :(

28 J3nn(Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) August 24, 2011 at 11:53 pm

The live singing sounds so fantastic! Looks like a great time.

Funny, Dustin’s and my marital contract specifies that he never cooks. Ever. Whether I’m home or not, his kitchen privileges are minimal, lol. This was my stipulation, by the way. Haha

29 Namaste Gurl August 25, 2011 at 12:31 am

How sweet of your hubby to make such a yummy looking meal– glad you had a good evening! :)

30 Gina @ Running to the Kitchen August 25, 2011 at 12:42 am

A cappella groups are the best. I never missed a concert in college, it was one of my favorite performing groups. I’m so impressed by people who can do that. My voice is not even remotely good enough!

31 Khushboo August 25, 2011 at 1:39 am

I’m going to miss seeing some of my favorite bloggers working together!

32 Aine @ Something to Chew Over August 25, 2011 at 2:25 am

So sweet that Matt had your dinner all made and blog-ready! :)

33 Evyn August 25, 2011 at 4:15 am

I loved watching AVP perform while I was at UVA! glad to see they’re still crazy. :)

34 Brooke @ Tea and Tofu August 25, 2011 at 4:32 am

Hi Kath, just wanted to let you know how much I adore your blog. I almost feel healthier just by reading it! :)

35 KathEats August 25, 2011 at 8:41 am

36 sara @ real fun food August 25, 2011 at 4:50 am

I wish I would have gone to UVA. It seems like such an amazing school and I love everything about the history of the whole area. After I visited Monticello last year I knew I wanted to someday live in that area of Virginia. I love it when you post about UVA and the Cville area!

37 Jumanah (Healthy Living in the Middle East) August 25, 2011 at 4:55 am

Such a fun night! Dinner looks amazing! I have never tried vinegar with my green beans- sounds good!

38 Krissy @ Make It Naked August 25, 2011 at 5:32 am

SO FUN! AVP used to give such a great show.

39 Christina August 25, 2011 at 5:39 am

I loved AVP and Hullabahoos (the guys that wear the robes) when I went to UVA. Jealous!

40 Fran August 25, 2011 at 5:40 am

I love experiencing music live, and outside is even better!

41 Mom August 25, 2011 at 5:48 am

Go Jenny!

42 Mom August 25, 2011 at 5:49 am

And bye Allie. I’ll miss seeing you when we come to the bakery!

43 Lynda @ healthy hoboken girl August 25, 2011 at 6:14 am

44 Claire @ Live and Love to Eat August 25, 2011 at 6:24 am

You’ve got a good man! :)

45 Living, Learning, Eating August 25, 2011 at 6:28 am

Fun stuff!

46 Marissa @ Apples of My Eye August 25, 2011 at 6:37 am

This is one of the reasons I love reading your blog :) – I’m actually from northern virginia so ALOT of my friends are at UVA so I love seeing and hearing about it! – it’s funny because I actually know a few people in those singing groups :) hope you enjoyed the show!

47 Hillary August 25, 2011 at 6:44 am

Hearing you talk about UVA kind of makes me wish that I went there! Haha!

48 Laural @ Being Healthier August 25, 2011 at 6:52 am

looks like a fun night and so sweet of the husband to make a man meal for his lady!

49 Baking N Books August 25, 2011 at 7:05 am

Do you really have a contract “written”? 😉

Wow, Matt really knows how to grill – that chicken is charred perfectly. Fun night out! How come Karen didn’t ‘fit in’…age? Not that she’s old of course!!

50 Ash @ Good Taste Healthy Me August 25, 2011 at 7:06 am

This looks awesome. Acappela groups can be so awesome.

51 Lindsay @ Lindsay's List August 25, 2011 at 7:12 am

I used to love listening to our acapella groups at UNC! Such talent!

52 Cait's Plate August 25, 2011 at 7:14 am

Um, can I move to Cville and take Allie’s spot!?

Also – that was so sweet of Matt. My boyfriend did the same thing for me last night – it seems like such a little thing but is actually SUCH a huge help.

I’m so jealous you have UVA so close to you! It must be so fun to “go back to college” every once in a while :)

53 KathEats August 25, 2011 at 8:41 am

54 Alaina August 25, 2011 at 7:18 am

I love a capella groups! Have you ever heard of Straight No Chaser? They are one of the best. :-)

55 KathEats August 25, 2011 at 8:42 am

56 Angie @ Musings of a Violet Monkey August 25, 2011 at 8:36 am

How lucky are you to come home to a home cooked meal! :)
My man’s idea of cooking dinner is getting Chipotle take-out. :(

Looks like a fun evening!

57 Angel7 August 25, 2011 at 8:57 am

I never know how to cook beans. I will have to cook them that way.

58 Sarah August 25, 2011 at 9:03 am

I was there too! This is the second time I have been at the same UVA event as you and not seen you!

59 KathEats August 25, 2011 at 9:10 am

Well it was pretty crowded :)

60 Katie G. August 25, 2011 at 9:31 am

it is so awesome that you can walk to enjoy something like that! i am slightly jealous

61 Katie @ Peace Love and Oats August 25, 2011 at 10:14 am

I know this is kind of a stupid question, but I’m very new to cooking. For your potatoes, how do you cook them? Do you bake them a bit first and then chop them up and roast them? Also, I love the UVA campus! I was there a few years ago when I went to Foxfield with my sorority sister who transferred to Maryland. Hope you enjoyed the beautiful scenery!

62 KathEats August 25, 2011 at 10:24 am

I really don’t know the details – Matt cooked them.

63 Ashley August 25, 2011 at 10:35 am

Those taters look EXcellent!!!!!!!!!

64 Kristine August 25, 2011 at 11:09 am

Yay for a cappella! Your post reminds me of concerts featuring the Generals, Delilahs and Androgyny on Chambers lawn….such fond memories! :-)

65 Sarah August 25, 2011 at 11:10 am

That looks like such a fun night out!

66 Jane and Mike August 25, 2011 at 11:12 am

Your food looks great but if you don’t have time and still want to eat “healthy” try the nutrition bars at They’re all natural, most are organic, raw, vegan and really only the best ones you can find. They are discounted prices, too.

67 Suzanne @ continuing my education August 25, 2011 at 11:13 am

Aw, so fun, I miss UVA!!!

68 Hilary August 25, 2011 at 11:41 am

Good luck Allie!

69 Allison August 25, 2011 at 6:48 pm

Sounds like a fun summer night! I’ve never heard that song before but just listened to it and am a fan :) I went to visit one of my girlfriends at UVA a couple of years ago and attended a holiday acapella show and all of the groups were great- so much talent!

70 Minnooo August 26, 2011 at 11:15 am

I can’t wait until I start getting manmeals like that…Frozen Pizza does not a man-meal make. :)

71 Lara @ TresLaLa August 26, 2011 at 5:53 pm

I am so jealous. Honestly, seeing these pictures of the Rotunda Sing literally brought tears to my eyes. I graduated 10 years ago, so you’d think I’d get over it somehow… When I was at UVA, my fave acapella group (The Virginia Gentlemen) would sing “Meet Virginia”. Love. And, the last time I was at the Rotunda, it was for a group shot at our wedding, then pics walking down the lawn with my new hubby…
