Sightbike, Sightwalk, Sightsee

September 17, 2010

We had a presidential day! Biking, sightseeing, talking, eating, caking!

After a short 2.5 hour drive, we arrived in Old Town Alexandria to Emily + Casey’s new house! Huey and Indy welcomed us right on in –

Emily was a doll of a host and had a delicious lunch for us when we arrived. Millet salad and roasted acorn squash! TOTALLY hit the spot in my starving stomach!

After settling in and digesting, we set out on our big afternoon adventure: biking the Mt Vernon Trail up to see the monuments.

IMG_0614 (640x480)

Well whaddya know, a few miles later, we found AnneP!

IMG_0615 (480x640)

IMG_0616 (640x480)

The bike path was totally awesome – smooth, flat, waterfront. We need this in Cville!!

And of course the scenery was fabulous

IMG_0619 (480x640) (2)

Hilarious that the three states Matt and I have shared are all side by side: NC, VA, SC

IMG_0620 (640x480) (2)

Our new home state!

IMG_0622 (640x480)

We walked [and walked and walked and walked]

IMG_0626 (640x480) (2)

IMG_0628 (480x640)

We also just happened to stumble upon Allie! [I promise to do an official DC blog meet-up on my next visit!]

IMG_0629 (640x480) (2)

More walking [and walking and walking!] led us to Sweetgreen, an AnneP delicacy. It was very much like Charlotte’s TastyYo – the tart was actually tart and made with Stonyfield yogurt! I topped it with apple, granola and chocolate. I wish I could have put on my own toppings though! I’m so spoiled these days with self serve :)

IMG_0637 (640x480) (2)

Our walk and bike back from Sweetgreen to the Capital to the Wash Monument to the Jefferson, back over the bridge and home ~8 miles took a while. We were quite tired at the end! But it was so worth it because it was the most beautiful day. It even smelled good!

After a quick refresh, we headed back on the [Old] Town. Obviously such a charming place to be!

Choosing a dinner spot was a tough one, but we settled on Thai

IMG_3645 (640x427) (3) IMG_3647 (640x427) (2) IMG_3651 (427x640)

I didn’t get the Larb duck, but my sister should come here and eat it!

IMG_3654 (640x427) (3)

We were famished by the time we sat down.

Matt and I shared a Mushroom and Lemongrass Soup that was amazing – SO lemony!

IMG_3663 (640x427) (2)

And some Crab + Shrimp Spring Rolls (one for me, two for him)

IMG_3660 (640x427) (3)

Back in our college days, we used to eat our weekday meals on campus but our meal plans did not include Friday night – Sunday lunch. Many, many times we went to this Thai restaurant near campus and got the green curry. It’s my favorite!

So tonight, although I was tempted by red and yellow and peanut dishes, green it was.

IMG_3673 (640x427) (4)

It was everything I had hoped for!! Perfect dish. Tofu and eggplant and bok choy. I made a serious dent hole in this dish and passed the last bit to Matt.

IMG_3676 (640x427) (3)

He was pretty disappointed in his crispy duck. Should gotten curry!

IMG_3679 (640x427) (2)

Did you hear we’re going to a wedding tomorrow!? We had a dress rehearsal tonight!!!

For a YEAR now Emily has told me that she has some of her wedding cake in her freezer. She’s transported it from Ohio to Charlotte to Alexandria. Have I told you how much I LIVE for wedding cake!? Tonight was the night. And it was everything I’d hoped for.

Buttercream amazingness

What a fabulous day!! I was just in washington, but my picture at the memorial was with Texas :) If you had to only go by one museum I would recommend the is way cool!!! Happy walking!!

2 maria @ Chasing the Now September 17, 2010 at 10:22 pm

I’m jealous! Man, this post makes me want to go back to D.C. ASAP. We didn’t get to stop at almost any monuments because we spent so much time in museums on our honeymoon. We are planning a trip back someday, though.

3 Mary @ Bites and Bliss September 17, 2010 at 10:25 pm

I love DC! And yeah..there’s soooo much walking involved. Maybe even more than in NYC. It’s way better than driving through that city- even the GPS gets lost!

It’s funny you ran into so many other bloggers out of nowhere 😛 Glad your having fun with everyone else!

4 Ashley September 17, 2010 at 10:27 pm

Yaaay. 2.5hrs is such a manageable drive to visit friends!! Looks like so much fun. I’m loving being in such a bike-able city now. All of the food sounds fabulous. Enjoy the wedding and the rest of your weekend.

5 holly @ couchpotatoathlete September 17, 2010 at 10:38 pm

I love visiting DC — I’ve only been there twice, but it was great both times. I can’t wait to bring Jason there one day. He would love the monuments and the museums and all of the history :)

Have a great weekend!

6 Lea @ healthy coconut September 17, 2010 at 10:43 pm

How fun I love visiting friends in their town. Makes traveling more memorable

7 Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter September 17, 2010 at 10:45 pm

I love WA DC. I can’t wait to visit during the spring.

11 Kate September 17, 2010 at 11:00 pm

Isn’t DC fun?!? I moved here two months ago and LOVE it! Glad you got to spend some time in Old Town Alexandria too. That’s one of my favorite so far. I’ve made a bucket list of just things I want to do here in DC. I’m going to add blogger meet-up right now! Have fun at the wedding.

12 Allie (Live Laugh Eat) September 17, 2010 at 11:11 pm

I had a blast with you today chatting, munching and oh yeah WALKING! I hope there is tons of cake at the wedding tomorrow. Can’t wait for Cville :)

13 Taylor September 17, 2010 at 11:14 pm

I totally ate at that thai place when I was in DC two years ago for the presidential inauguration! I really enojyed it. :)

14 Lindsay September 17, 2010 at 11:33 pm

Love Sweetgreen! Its my favorite since you get free toppings – even if its not serve yourself :)

15 Jasmine @ Eat Move Write September 17, 2010 at 11:40 pm

Old Town looks so fun. I haven’t been to the DC area in years. Have a great time!

16 Larbs September 17, 2010 at 11:47 pm

17 Valerie @ City|Life|Eats September 17, 2010 at 11:58 pm

18 Caitlin (EatFeats) September 18, 2010 at 12:01 am

My bff just moved to DC (5 days ago) and this post made me miss her so much. =(

26 Sarah September 18, 2010 at 5:38 am

This is such a random take-away from your post, but we just moved to Davidson and haven’t been able to find any good Thai food around here. Where did you guys used to go when you were in college?

27 Kristy @ September 18, 2010 at 6:03 am

I have never been to D.C. but looks like y’all had a blast! :) I especially love the way Old Town looks. I could definitely deal with that. 😉 Have fun at the wedding.

28 Lauren at KeepItSweet September 18, 2010 at 6:33 am

have a fun weekend in DC! so funny about her travelling with her wedding cake, i can’t believe she hasn’t eaten more of it!

29 Allie September 18, 2010 at 7:16 am

i think it’s so funny that you guys ended the day with that wedding cake! that is funny that your states are next to each other (everyone looks for their states, right?). something i didn’t know and looked up after the first time i visited- the states are arranged in the order that they ratified the constitution, starting from the middle and going out on each side.

30 Kacie (Nonexistent Colors) September 18, 2010 at 7:21 am

What a great day!! I did the same a few years ago, minus the delish Tai food after!!! Gosh you walk and walk and walk in DC and still feel like you haven’t covered much ground! Cheers to great days! 😀

31 Jil @ Peace, Love & Munchies September 18, 2010 at 7:25 am

What an amazing day!! LOVE green curry and that wedding cake looks delicious!

32 Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat September 18, 2010 at 7:30 am

Wow, what an incredible day! You’re so lucky to have so many other bloggers near you. I tried acorn squash for the first time last week (I know, why on earth did I wait so long, right?!) and LOVED it. The salad looks delicious – and the wedding cake too of course!

33 Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) September 18, 2010 at 7:36 am

Looks like such a great day with friends! So glad you got to see them and it looks like a great way to start the weekend! I hope you have a great one!

35 chelsey @ clean eating chelsey September 18, 2010 at 7:43 am

Okay, what I want to know if how you all stumble upon each other! I have yet to stumble upon ANY blogger – that is too funny. Not only do I love Allie to death, buuuut I love Anne’s shirt – for real. Even though I can’t eat Feta, it really is betta!!!

Have fun!

38 Dee September 18, 2010 at 8:04 am

I love it when bloggers get together! I also love reading about the events in different perspectives. Enjoy DC and the wedding! :)

39 Lauren September 18, 2010 at 8:04 am

What a great day. DC is such a wonderful city. You should consider running the Cherry Blossom 10 mile in April. I can’t tell you how amazing this race is. I’ve actually talked to Emily about doing a little blogger meet up for this race. I run it every year and wouldn’t miss it.

Have fun Kath! :)

40 Tina September 18, 2010 at 8:24 am
