See You Online

August 15, 2010

Annnnddd the Summit comes to a close. A long time ago, the planning committee members envisioned this event as a way to put faces to URLs. And I’d say that was absolutely the best part of the weekend! I enjoyed each and every conversion – quick or long – I had with everyone and hope to meet you ALL sometime, someday!

I was up at 7:39 this morning (39 minutes late!) to head out on a final fun run with some of my new friends. We had 4 groups:

-16 milers!!

I joined the 10K group for 6 miles along the lakefront path.

I’ve got no photos – only memories!! It was hot and long, but a good run nonetheless due to the great company.

After a SPEEDY red-faced shower, I made my way to the Thomas Farewell Breakfast

Complete with Bagel Thins and a make-your-own cream cheese station with everything from smoked salmon and jalapenos to pineapple and cinnamon.

I made a savory and sweet mix:

Smoked salmon with capers and mint

And blueberries with honey, walnuts and pineapple!

I smothered a bagel thin with a little of each spread. I really do like the Thin brands. Basically it puts bread in second place to delicious food. Sometimes bread can overwhelm. I like bread best by itself!

+ lots of fruit and brown water coffee

Getting to the airport was a bit of a fail. I had to try THREE entrances to my El station to find one that took credit cards – and the machine was BROKEN! I had to put a $10 bill in the machine and lose $7.75. GUFFFF. I gave the ticket to a man at the end of my ride and feel better about it now, but the whole reason I took the El was to only have to pay $2.25!

The ride was uneventful.

The airport was fine.

Just spotted "GOAT CHEESE" on a menu board and wolfed down this black bean, rice, roasted veggie and goat cheese salad for lunch.

IMG_0267 (640x427)

Had to pick off the onions!

It was pretty good – just drippy in my lap and not the best eating experience I’ve had.

IMG_0268 (640x427)

I had a Yum Universe truffle for dessert!

IMG_0269 (640x427)

Now that was good!

We’re boarding for Raleigh! I’m late!!

Thanks for the HLS play-by-play for those that could not attend this time around. Already looking forward to info on the next one (::subliminal message:: New York 2011?! ;P) Safe flight.

3 Heather August 15, 2010 at 2:38 pm

4 Nicole - yuppie yogini August 15, 2010 at 2:40 pm

Have a safe trip. Reading about all the HLS events has made me excited to hopefully attend the next one. Wish it weren’t a whole year away!

5 Laura August 15, 2010 at 2:44 pm

Sounds like you had a fab time! What a big box for such a little truffle xx

6 Caitlyn @ A Spoonful of Life August 15, 2010 at 2:48 pm

That looked like a fun weekend! I like the idea of a make-your-own cream cheese station!!

7 Rachael @ Mrs-adventure August 15, 2010 at 3:07 pm

Looks like you had loads of fun @ HLS! :)

13 Esse August 15, 2010 at 4:21 pm

Kath, sorry to hear about your grandfather. That can be hard news, especially when you are travelling. All of you certainly added excitement and beauty to our city this weekend. Visit again soon!

14 Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter August 15, 2010 at 4:23 pm

I had a regular bagel the other day and thought that it did overwhelm the toppings I had put on. I haven’t been able to find Arnold Thins in the Seattle area though:(

15 Meagan August 15, 2010 at 4:28 pm

I’m from Chicago and that’s one reason I hate taking the EL, it takes all your money before you even have a chance to figure out how to use the machine! ugh! But other than that I’m glad you enjoyed your trip to Chicago!

16 Heather (Heather's Dish) August 15, 2010 at 4:38 pm

oh dear…that truffle couldn’t be any better. really though…what a perfect end to a fabulous weekend!

21 Lauren @ BIOCHEMISTA August 15, 2010 at 5:37 pm

What a genius idea!!! Make your own cream cheese! I am obsessed with cottage cheese on bagels, I want to try a make-your-own cottage cheese!!! :) So jealous of your HLS experience! And way to get an a solid run! XOXOX,

22 lynn (The Actors Diet) August 15, 2010 at 5:41 pm

23 [email protected]:// August 15, 2010 at 6:29 pm

The raw truffle looks really good and tasty.

24 Kristy August 15, 2010 at 6:41 pm

Just hopped onto your blog and it is wonderful! Great pics from the summit, all that food looks so good! Especially that truffle, yum! Sorry to hear the news of your loss…

25 Kristy @ August 15, 2010 at 6:56 pm

Hold the phone! That truffle looks amazing! …Along with all of the other featured food, of course. 😉 Glad it was a successful weekend!

26 Jenn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) August 15, 2010 at 7:03 pm

That truffle saved the day. :)

27 Anna Lee August 15, 2010 at 7:15 pm

Kath…at first I thought those truffles were resting on your finger tips and I thought “Now THAT’S a tiny truffle!!” But on closer inspection, it’s on your leg. Much better! LOL

28 Kath August 16, 2010 at 8:35 am

29 Lauren August 15, 2010 at 8:22 pm

Impressive looking airport salad, even if it wasn’t the best!

30 Megan August 15, 2010 at 8:30 pm

I WANT one of those truffles! Hope the trip home was safe.

31 Jasmine @ Eat Move Write August 15, 2010 at 8:33 pm

Airport food is always tricky. You just have to do the best you can, and it looked pretty good to me!
I’m sure it’s such a bummer to see HLS come to a close. It looked like so much fun!

32 Mary @ Bites and Bliss August 15, 2010 at 8:49 pm

Glad you had a good run and a great last day at the HLS! Have a safe trip!

33 Stacey August 15, 2010 at 8:53 pm

Your dinner salad sort of looks like mine! And I’m sorry to hear about your Pop :( You’ll be in my thoughts.
I hope you get some ‘down time’ before you head off again on Tuesday. Take some time and be with family and unwind a bit, Kath!
It’ll be good for you to. Hope you had a safe flight back.

34 tanyasdaily August 15, 2010 at 9:22 pm

the truffle looks great

35 Cati August 15, 2010 at 10:25 pm

Kath, the HLS sounds like such a great experience–nice work to you and all the other bloggers responsible for organizing it! I’m looking forward to checking out some of the video online, and hoping to attend one of these years…

36 Hannah August 15, 2010 at 11:11 pm

Oh, I don’t know which makes my tummy grumble more… that smoked salmon crema cheese mix or the raw chocolate truffle! Ah, who am I kidding, it’s the truffle. I do have a chocolate blog, after all 😉

37 Laura (Starloz) August 16, 2010 at 12:19 am

Bagel thins. i want.

Must search for them in Australia!

38 Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin August 16, 2010 at 7:30 am

That make your own cream cheese station is genius! I’ve never thought of mixing cream cheese with toppings like that!

39 Brandy August 19, 2010 at 6:53 am

Even though I didn’t attend….I had to put something up about HLS and how blogging has changed me for the better. :)

It’s my post today:

So, thank you for all that you do!
