Last year we sent the Bears to grandma Buzz’s house for the summer.

It was nice to have them safe and sound while we moved from Charlotte to Charlottesville. They had a wonderful time doing arts + crafts, performing in summer theater, learning new trades and eating way too much candy!

When my mom came this weekend, she offered to take the Bears back to Hillsborough while we open the bakery so we’ll have a little less to worry about on the home front.
Here’s an email I received last night about their trip:
Thrilled to be here! Running all around "I remember this" "Are we going to do that?"
They are saying a lot of "My dad allows that" If I say we don’t run across the dining room table. We had this last year. I know he isn’t THAT lenient–I think they are trying to trick Grammy.
A little later she g-chatted me this:
Barbara: How strict do ya’ll want me to be? I have them for a while so I can’t be too lenient. Paw Paw put them in their seatbelts in the car on the way home.
me: they need their disciplined or they get out of control!
Barbara: yes that is how I feel. Not as strict as you are but I have to lay down lines
And then this morning I received this news:
The bears behaved beautifully in the car and were so thrilled to arrive in Hillsborough. They did a lot of bouncing on their bed (Kath’s old bed) but finally settled down to sleep.
However, we’ve had a bit of trouble with breakfast this morning.
Beaker said, "Grammy, I can’t drink this milk. It isn’t organic."
And Churton said, "I don’t want that toast. It’s not Great Harvest Bread."
And Bocker said, "I would never eat plain old cereal. I only eat granola that my dad made in his bakery."
Sigh. They are off playing. I’m hoping if they get good and hungry enough, they will eat Grammy’s food.
Looks like Grammy is up for a wild summer!!

what a fun post!
I. Love. The. Bears. So cute!!!!
This is adorable! I can tell they miss you already!
I laughed out loud at the bears’ “complaints.” Too cute, Kath! Maybe a children’s book on the side some day?
I was thinking the same thing
Hahahaha they’ve been spoiled with breadboard tastings!
How cute! I love when you do posts with The Bears
I could so see you doing a Children’s website or book with their stories!
Bahahahaha.
hahahhah this is SO cute!
Your bear posts crack me up – so creative! I see that you and your mom share a creative writing gene!
haha – Made me laugh — also made me wonder if I’m a little crazy or you are
Too cute ^_^ Those spoiled bears!
That is just too precious!! Love the bears!
Who knew The Bears were so high maintenance?
Lol, your mom sounds like mine – the bears are going to have a great summer
Thanks! I hope so. I’m worn out already but hate to complain as the bears are such a blessing in our lives.
I bet The Tig is really ticked off that he couldn’t go to NC with the Bears! He would like Lils!
Lils is furious that we made friends with another cat and doesn’t want Auntie Karen befriending any other cats either. Lils only likes people and herself. Sad but true.
Please don’t tell Lils that I give Timmy Fancy Feast.
You guys and those cats crack me up. My dad has a “neighborhood” cat who invites himself into other homes. He’s been known to waltz in and go get in bed with other people.
It also gets him into trouble – he’s been stuck inside a garage and underneath a house for days at a time.
Oh fun for your dad’s neighborhood to have one too.
We had a cat get into someone’s basement while they were in Europe. Luckily, she got stuck in there on the last day or so of their trip.
We adore cats! My neighborhood cat got into bed with me while I was recovering from the chemo!
Maybe the kitty was your guardian angel in the form of a cat knowing you just needed a little snuggle, to be watched out for and a tiny little happy moment at such a difficult time. Happy you are finished chemo and are feeling up to doing some things.
I’m slowly getting better and, YES, the kitty was/is one of many angels in my life, including you many KERF readers who have sent your love and support throughout this journey. I pledge my support to others who are also in need. Thank you, Mary Frances.
Adorable!!! My parents and I also have stuffed animals with personalities, we have bunnies. Glad to know I’m not the only adult out there that does this!
Aww
This is so cute!
I’m glad that I’m not the only one that posts her Bear doing human things!
haha….they are all SOOO cute, especially Bocker.
I love his little outfit and hat in the first pic.
HAHA I love you, I totally used to do that with my bears…now I do it with everything. I call that personification!
hahah cuteeeee post!!
Ha…you guys are hysterical with your bear stories! Mama KERF is so imaginitive…she must be an awesome children’s book author!
Hope you are having a lovely and relaxing Sunday, Kath!
haha too funny! It will be interesting to see what happens with “real” grandchildren one day
YAY! The bears are back! I missed them so much.
I love the bears they are so cute!
i dont get this whole bears thing…
I don’t either.
Click on “The Bears” link I included in the first line. It explains them.
i don’t either. (to clarify: i understand the bears’ background because i’ve been reading this blog for years.) the stories went way past cute to daft a long time ago. but clearly others like the bears, so who am i to judge?
ha thats what i meant. i have read all about them so i understand the background, i just think its really, really strange…
although i do have to admit that Kath’s mom is quite talented. i bet her childrens books are great
WOW guess everyone has to be boring and unimaginative like you eh? I think the bears are cute its like pre grandchildren/children its adorable like an inside joke but shared with us!
ha i do have to admit that i am not a “silly” person so i guess thats why i dont like it. most others seem to enjoy the bears, so be it
my loss. however, i just want to point out that i have noticed that people get so defensive about things on blogs. blogs are fun, no need to get nasty amanda.
Hahahaha, I love the bears! It sounds pretty similar to me and my parents’ relationship with my stuffed friends
They are a bit more “colorful” however, and include a certain purple dinosaur and a wolf from NC… they can be pretty feisty too
Thanks Kath, I enjoy the sense of humor and imagination brought to the blog….
Congrats on your business and hope the bears have a great summer with grandma.. I spent many a summer with my own grandma. Great times..
You crack me up! This is hilarious!
LOL, cute!
So glad Dustin and I are not the only ones who have real life stuffed animals that talk and have personalities. Our moose ays a facebook and Twitter, lol!
Oh my gosh, I think I love your mom! How adorable were the complaints at the end, with the pics? Ha ha. Oh, and I completely agree that a children’s book featuring the bears is a must! I don’t even have kids but I would buy it!
uh oh..the bears have gotten spoiled with your good food!
Hahaha I love this.
Cute! If you both get iPads/iPhones, you can Face Time so you can see each other! I do that with my doggie and my parents. They just want to see her, not us. The best thing until grandchildren!
Hmmm. Good suggestion! Yes, we’ll see if Kath wants to do that. Sometimes, she goes a few days without even asking how they are. Odd, I think, for a mother.
Aww what an adorable post, Kath!
I love the Bears. And the last shot with the pieces of granola in the bear bowl…too cute!
Haha it sounds like you’re going to have to send them a care package with some GH bread!
Now that’s a great idea!
Haha brilliant grandmothering, Buzz!
I remember when Bocker was knee-high to a grasshopper, always stirring up trouble. I see not much has changed in 10 (!!!!) years . . .
Snake, Do you think he’s just high-spirited or do you think this is an example of parents who are too busy doing other things?
HA! Hi Snake!!
You are too cute!
the bears are always a fun & unexpected break. My favorite was the stair-surfing while you were in Africa.
So much fun to read!
That’s so cute. Your mom’s such a good writer. I guess that’s why she writes children’s books.
too funny, made me laugh out loud.
hehehe how funny! I guess they really take after their mommy and daddy with a great sense of taste
This is too cute!
Hip, hip, hooray! The bears are back!
Hehe this is too cute. They do take after their mom in having great taste!
This is too cute! I love their complaints…
I love the bears. They are so lucky to have such loving grandparents.
THANK YOU! I was kind of shocked this morning-they ate everything I put on their plates last year.
hah I love this saga!!! Please never let it end.
love it!!! i love posts about the bears!
i hope they behave themselves at grammys!
Y’all are nutty. That’s funny.
Your mom is so clever. Love the part about breakfast!
This is too cute!!
Milk… good for growing bear bones!
So adorable! Thanks for the smile!
This is the cutest post!! I actually think the comments are the best part with your Mom & Karen:-)cc
I love these posts about the bears. Your mom is not only a gifted, creative writer, but she does a great job of writing realistically as if she’s taking care of actual children.
I think this is how the week that my MIL has my girls will go. She’s only taking the older two, one day she’ll take all 3. Grammie is brave to take 3 little beats all at the same time when they’re so little. Wait, how old are they anyway?
That’s a good question! But I might say they act like 6, 7, 8 year olds?
Hah! Love the bears!
YES! I love the bears
…mainly because my husband and I do the same thing with a stuffed animal we have.
I think Beaker is the cutest
Kath, don’t let some of the less than thrilling comments from ruining your creativity. I think adding personality and a story to your bears is cute! You’ve got a children’s story book in the making here (maybe a blog chronicling the bear’s adventures for children!) My husband and I have a similar inside joke with a stuffed Pixar character from Monsters, Inc. Sully has adopted us, or, as I should say, he has become my husband’s partner in crime! I’ve gone on trips to find Sully hidden in my suitcase. He’s traveled around the world!
That is way too cute!!!
The bears have wonderful grandparents

hehe your family’s sense of humor is awesome
haha i love this! sounds like something me and my parents would do
So cute and hilarious! I love the bear stories.
