Runplugged

March 16, 2010

Hola!

I’m all ready to take the RD exam!! Just have to get through 3.5 more months of internship first :) And then study. A lot. But I feel really good about the review course and how much I already knew. It’s just a LOT of material.

I think my 11.88 miles caught up with me because I sure was hungry today! That awesome lunch barely made a dent in my stomach.

I had two Hersey’s Special Dark chocolates from the class stash after lunch to try to end on a full note. Let’s just pretend they looked like this.

Chocolates

Then I was bored and drew this image of the mixed nuts and seeds I dug into around 2PM ;)

photo

And was STILL feeling hungry at 3:15 so I had an Amazing Grass bar!! The chocolate kind. This was not my favorite – the chocolate was more like dessert than fuel. But it still tasted good and finally filled me up!

Got home around 4:30 and found this fun girl ready to run!

IMG_8068 (640x427)

Emily and I did a run, RUNPLUGGED. No Garmins or time keepers. Just us and some fun exercise! We set out for an unknown mileage and ended up jogging (not even running!) 4.75 miles around my neighborhood. It was quick, easy and awesome.

And I totally took my Camelbak to test him out!! I laughed at the thought of wearing it on such a short run, but actually, it was really nice to have the water!! I’m stoked to take this on our 10 miler this weekend. Perhaps spiked with a little of that sweet, sweet sports nectar ;)

IMG_8071 (427x640)

Matt and I worked on taxes, I packed my lunch (gonna be a great one!!!) and then I FINALLY got around to putting something together for dinner.

The star was this bok choy

IMG_8086 (640x427)

Which I sauteed with some mushrooms, rice wine vinegar and sesame oil, salt and pepper

IMG_8088 (640x427)

And then served alongside the last of our Greek pasta salad with Sardines and Broc

IMG_8091 (640x427)

The veggies were awesome. But note to self: sardines are best consumed the day of opening. This was a bit fishy, even for me!

IMG_8094 (640x427)

IMG_8103 (640x427)

Another NOTE: Matt often prepares some toast with butter with his dinners and I often have a delicious bite! Tonight was no exception.

IMG_8104 (640x427)

IMG_8090 (640x427)

I broke out the Dark Chocolate Dreams for Matt to try! He liked it but said "it’s not peanut butter." Of course it’s not – it’s a RESEE’S!

IMG_8105 (640x427)

I had a spoonful too. It actually made a great dessert!

IMG_8107 (640x427)

Guess what will be coming up in the next few days….OIAJ!

IMG_8109 (640x427)

It’s past my bedtime and I am SO not done with my work yet!! Ahhh!!

Nite!

That bok choy looks FANTASTIC! I’m glad spring break is coming up at the end of this week, I’m going to totally ask my mother to pick some up from the store before I return home.

And nice job feeling ready for that exam – I’m sure you’ll do amazing on it ;D

We love that peanut butter too! Try a banana sliced in half long ways and make a “sandwich” with the choc peanut butter in the middle. YUMMO

I love when you just go for a run unplugged. No pressure. Just you and the pavement. It makes for a nice refresher.

And I love the chocolate amazing grass bar just because it tastes like dessert

I went home for a week last week, and I accidentally forgot my garmin, so I ran all week “unplugged”– it was actually really nice and relaxing! Helps you to remember why you run in the first place– for fun!

I just found that PB & Co. stuff for the first time … there is only one place in my city that sells it, and it is the only flavour they have. I LOVE it!!

It tastes like Reeses!!! Now I HAVE to try it! This could be a dangerous relationship:) And I’m gonna like it!

11 Shayna @ Cuts and Curves March 16, 2010 at 8:30 pm

Wow… 4.75 miles is short! That’s an average distance for me. I’d love to know how you got past short runs to longer ones regularly. I’m working on it, but it’s so hard for me! I’d love some tips – if you have any. Thanks!

Reply

12 Kath March 17, 2010 at 4:37 am

For me it’s more about time than distance. Now that I’m running almost 2 hours, 40 minutes seems super short. I really did add a little at a time. 5 to 6 to 7 and so on. So just work on adding half a mile to a mile per week.

I can be insatiable the day after a long run too! And I love baby bok choy. It’s really tasty sauteed with pumpkin butter, oddly enough. And DCD is totally PB, just amped up with a ton of sugar and chocolate. Definitely resses-like :)

Hi! This isn’t really about your post, but I thought it might interest you. I came across this blog of a teacher who is eating cafeteria food every day in an effort to draw attention to the importance of good nourishment for kids (That’s what I got out of it, anyway). It reminded me of your time in the schools and how you had to find food that tastes good, is easy to prepare, not too expensive, healthy, etc. and how DIFFICULT that is! Here’s the link: http://fedupwithschoollunch.blogspot.com/

Hey Kath-
I would love to know what you think of the camelbak–I need a lot of water/hydration when I run and the little water bottle I run with supplemented with the drinking fountain is not quite enough! Did it move around a lot or slosh on your back? Did it feel heavy? A penny for your thoughts!

32 Heather (Heather's Dish) March 16, 2010 at 9:48 pm

Looks like you decided to go with the Camelbak :) I’m interested to know what you think about it – I’ve been hesitant because I like my hand bottle, but it doesn’t hold much.

I’m jealous you get to take the RD exam first ;) 1.5 years to go!

I agree with Matt on the Dark Chocolate Dreams–when I’m craving PB, the chocolate-infused kind just doesn’t cut it. Nonetheless, I still manage to find plenty of uses for the DCD:)

Love that dinner :)

Here’s the Camelbak I got. It’s for women + running. It’s TOTALLY AWESOME. You can’t feel it at all and I don’t think it slows me down at all. It holds 1.5 liters of water and has a pouch to store stuff too. There is a slight sloshing noise, but that’s not noticeable after 30 seconds.

Hi Kath,
I’m a total beginner when it comes to running (just started training for my first half last week!) and was wondering…if you use your Camelbak for the homemade sports drink, do you carry a water bottle with you or do you just drink the sports drink on your run? Like I said, I’m a total beginner but wanted to know your thoughts. Thanks!

Lisa,

You generally don’t need any extra fuel on runs less than 90 minutes (about 10 miles for me) so I will only put water in for short runs and the fuel for the long ones and will dilute it so that I’m getting enough liquid per calorie to last the whole run.
