Boot camp…book club…board games!
My foot was feeling a little sore after all of our sports and Larbs is still feeling under the weather, so mother produced some IB profin for her daughters
We set out for an adventure to the one and only event on the island this weekend – an artist meet and greet and wine tasting at an art gallery
However we arrived to find the place empty and locked
We took the scenic way home along the beach
We were gearing up for the Bald Head Book Club all afternoon
Matt Allen was the chairman and did lots of preparation with passages and questions and all.
Karen prepared a delicious appetizer for some Road food. A black bean, sour cream, and raspberry salsa dip with melty cheese [RECIPE HERE]
8 hungry people around the pie dish went fast! I had about 5 or so chips dipped in
Book club began promptly at 5:30 with an intro by the chairman and we spent over an hour discussing the deep scenes and themes from The Road. I thought the book was amazing – very interesting and thought provoking. It was a great discussion and we’re already talking about a second book club!
Still fighting her cold
I ended up not drinking anything during the cocktail hour book club (to keep my mind clear!) and soon enough we were off to dinner at Ebb & Flow’s Steam Bar, one of 2-3 open restaurants on the island.
Didn’t feel like a beer, but I sipped off of Kanz’s 1554.
Ebb & Flow’s OKRA is awesome!! I had three of these guys…
And ordered a bowl of gumbo for the first part of dinner. It wasn’t fabulous, but I still finished it off.
Kanz and I shared the steamer pot (and by shared I mean he had most and I had some of each)
I gave back most of my corn, potato and kielbasa and stuck to the seafood cause I was getting full.
Once we walked back home we met in the living room for some Christmas tree and a group game of Trivial Pursuit
I enjoyed a few Christmas cookies as I’ve been blogging and must get back to the game!

I love that shadowy picture of the blue house during subset! So artistic — magazine worthy!
You guys look like you’re enjoying yourself, very relaxing! Totally awesome.

That Trivial Pursuit looks… loved =]
Mom’s always know how to take care of their children.
Wow, that scenery is just gorgeous! And that dip sounds FABULOUS! Thanks for the recipe!
Beautiful Christmas Kath. You are an inspiration to live life and enjoy it.
Love the idea of book club on a group vacation! I had a hard time with The Road, it left me feeling very drained each time I picked it up. I am sure I would have enjoyed the discussion though.
I love all of the group activities you are doing over Christmas Vacay, what fun!
I like the idea of doing a book club like that – it definitely makes for great conversation because you all HAVE read the same novel!
Your group activities are WONDERFUL! My friends from college and I do a book club over the phone once a month! Your pictures are beautiful!
You family time has seemed like a fabulous time!!!!
I’m totally taken notes on what to do during family vacations
Where is this Bald Head??? It looks INCREDIBLE!
Also a bit jealous you were able to talk your family into a book club
How sweet that your family has a book club– love it!
Love trivial pursuit! Have a great evening, girlie.
I can’t decide if I liked The Road or not. It was really depressing to me.
The island looks so relaxful andpretty!
I wish I could get my family to do a book club but nobody else in my family is a big reader like me.
I couldn’t pay my family to do a book club! Maybe a movie club?
our Trivial Pursuit looks exactly the same!!! My family plays Trivial Pursuit every single Christmas night with dessert. It has been our tradition as long as I can remember.
LOVE the Starfish on the Christmas Tree
Book club sounds fun! Sad that you guys are a little under the weather though
Hope Trivial Pursuit goes well for ya and you wake up feeling AWESOME in the AM!
What beautiful pictures! I love looking at scenery of places I will likely never visit!
I love your pictures! Everything looks delicious!
I played Trivial Pursuit with my family tonight, too…but we played via ichat as we are in California and my family is in Missouri!
What a great vacation! I think your family would like the game Banagram, it’s like Scrabble but fast paced and fun to play in a group. Very addicting too!
Bananagram!! Sorry bout that.
Looks like you’re having soo much fun with your family, boot camp, book club… I would love to do that with my loved ones:)
Cute Barney Butter tee
that sounds like so much fun! if i did a family book club, my mom would never finish the book, my dad and sister would get in a heated argument about one of the themes and josh and i would end up shrugging our shoulders and drinking enough wine at cocktail hour to dissociate from the whole spectacle.
actually, scratch that. we’d probably never agree on a book to all read in the first place!
i’m totally impressed at your family’s ability to do this together!!
Your family vacation sounds like so much fun!!!!
I think our favorite thing to do as a family is cook together and watch movies. But it never went past that. I’m totally impressed by the activities yall have planned!
I bought The Road for my brother in law for Christmas and all your talk about it makes me want to read it too, so it’s next on my list
. Well done for doing the boot camp on your holidays! I wish my family were more active while on holidays, it’s mostly just the wine tasting end of the spectrum
.
Looks like a great time! Enjoy your time with family!
I wrote down that book to check out soon. Also I love Okra, I did a post a little while back on my blog about.
Your family has a book club?! What an awesome idea. I read that book quite a while ago, and loved it!
I love the family book club idea. I’ve been wanting to read “The Road” for some time. I’ll add it to my Goodreads queue after hearing your review! By the way, you may be interested in signing up for (www.goodreads.com). It’s like a social networking sight for book worms! I love it and have found out about a lot of great books through it.
Also, gorgeous scenery. Those chips and dip look delicious!
I’ve seen Good Reads. Might have to look at it again!
I’ve never played Trivial Pursuit but have always heard so much about it… is it fun??
Personally, only if you have the right spirit. Sometimes I love it, others I hate it. Depends on the company.
I always love playing the old school version of trivial pursuit… it’s so hard, but hilarious because we all end up making up the silliest answers.
Looks like a yummy steamer pot… I can’t get enough seafood these days, and I would kill for a nice East coast treat like that!
We’re having game nights here too
Love islands that are run by golfcart– the island I got married on is like that, and my hub and I had our getaway via golf cart
Great pics…thanks for “taking us along” on your vacation! My fave is the disappointed looks outside the art gallery! Cute!

adventures in tri-ing
i’ll be interested to see what you think of the New Rules weight lifting book. I like the idea but i don’t think there are enough weight lifting in each workout, esp. for someone who has been lifting weights for years.
Your family looks like so much fun! Board games, book club…where do I sign up?
that trivial pursuit edition looks about as old as the one i have – from the 80’s?!
LOVE the family book club idea!
“Boot camp…book club…board games!”
Sounds like a perfect day!
ha! our trivial pursuit game looks the same; it’s tricky to play because it’s so old some of the countries it mentions have different names now, etc.
