Raindrops On Tulips

February 2, 2011

Our weather is changing faster than Julie Andrews morphs from Mary Poppins into Maria von Trapp!

We’ve gone from 50* to 28*, from rain to sun, in a matter of minutes. That’s February for you!

Today’s amazing oatmeal blend involved lots of flours flowers

Cherry blossoms in the bowl and tulips on the table

“When Will Spring Be Here?” Oats

  • 1/3 cup oats, milk, water
  • Half banana
  • Pinch salt
  • 2 tbsp wheatberries, stirred in at end
  • 1/4 cup cottage cheese, stirred in at end
  • Groovy Granola
  • GH Jam
  • Homemade crunchy peanut butter

Looks like a warm fluffy pillow!

Doesn’t it look like this little mug is staring out the window hoping for spring?!

FINALLY got to read a chapter of my book last night! Lots to do today!

Watcha reading?

Your pictures look VERY spring-like, even if your weather says otherwise!

Ooh I hear that’s really good.

4 Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg February 2, 2011 at 3:38 pm

Aw, that’s one of my favorites! I read it in a high school Novels class, and it remains one of my faves! After you finish it, you have to rent the movie!

5 Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin February 2, 2011 at 9:33 am

Gorgeous flowers! And I know – we were told to prepare for a snow day, and its almost 50º outside!

6 Kjirsten- Balanced Healthy Life February 2, 2011 at 9:34 am

Your beakfast has me craving a nice warm bowl of oats right now! Glad you got to read some of your book too! : )

7 Amanda (Eating Up) February 2, 2011 at 9:35 am

I’m so ready for spring. I’m holding on to the fact that the groundhog didn’t see his shadow.

9 Stacy @ Every Little Thing February 2, 2011 at 9:36 am

17 Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat February 2, 2011 at 9:45 am

I hear ya on the “when will spring be here” thing! There’s definitely no signs of it this morning where I am! Your tulip photo is so gorgeous Kath. have a great day!

18 Lauren at KeepItSweet February 2, 2011 at 9:46 am

Those tulips look so happy. I think I need some pretty flowers for the apartment:-)

19 Carla @ Will Run for Health February 2, 2011 at 9:47 am

Oh Wow! Your tulips are at their peak today…so pretty. I am glad I’m not the only person who puts jam in their oats! It’s delicious :)

20 Valerie @ City|Life|Eats February 2, 2011 at 9:49 am

I can’t wait for spring either!

21 Camille February 2, 2011 at 9:52 am

22 Jil @ Big City, Lil Kitchen February 2, 2011 at 9:53 am

Love that bowl – and the oats look fabulous, as always.

23 Simply Life February 2, 2011 at 9:55 am

ugh – i can’t wait for spring!!!

24 Amalfi Girl (EatRunHaveFun.blogspot) February 2, 2011 at 9:56 am

Those tulips are so beautiful. I need to get some flowers for the house–we tend to have them around in Spring/Summer, but not Fall/Winter. It should probably be the reverse–we need the color much more in Winter!

25 RhodeyGirl February 2, 2011 at 10:00 am

I am just like that coffee mug. Staring out the window and hoping for sunshine and spring.

26 Erin (Travel Eat Repeat) February 2, 2011 at 10:02 am

I bought that bowl last month on sale from HomeGoods! Love the cherry blossom pattern.

27 [email protected] February 2, 2011 at 10:09 am

Your oats are making me feel all warm and cozy inside. Looks like the perfect start to get your motor running on these cold days. We went from 79 degrees on Sunday to 21 degrees this morning – UGH!!!

28 Joy (The Herbed Kitchen) February 2, 2011 at 10:13 am

Absolutely lovely photos! I’m like that mug, staring out the window wondering when spring will come when all I see is snow with another blizzard on the way. Soon, right? Maybe? Before we know it we’ll be so hot we’ll beg for a bit of cool weather.

29 Hope February 2, 2011 at 10:17 am

I love the photos this morning! They look very spring-like! Those oats look so yummy! I love the bowl! It’s so cute! I love bowls with fun prints on them! :)

30 Stacey (The Home-Cooked Vegan) February 2, 2011 at 10:28 am

Those flowers are so pretty :) We have been having crazy weather here too! The temps keep going up and down. I’m so with you on the “When will spring get here?” thing 😀
Glad you were able to get a little reading in!

31 Jessica @ How Sweet It Is February 2, 2011 at 10:29 am

Just hearing the word Spring makes my heart hurt!

32 stacey-healthylife February 2, 2011 at 10:35 am

Spring is coming and I am so ready.

33 Natalie @ Will Jog For Food February 2, 2011 at 10:37 am

I LOVE all your bowls and mugs. They are friggin adorable :)

34 jennifer February 2, 2011 at 10:49 am

for the wheat berries–do you just add them “raw” or do you cook them first?

35 KathEats February 2, 2011 at 10:55 am

They are cooked in bulk in advance, stored in tupperware and added to oats as needed

36 Katy (The Singing Runner) February 2, 2011 at 11:04 am

I love the bowl! Super cute! 😀

37 Katelyn @ Chef Katelyn February 2, 2011 at 11:11 am

Seriously! When will spring be here?! Hopefully it will be soon, especially since Mr. Punxitawney Phil said so:)

38 Sarah Leigh February 2, 2011 at 11:13 am

Hi Kath! Tulips are my fav! They are so pretty!

I have an oats question.

When I make oats for me and the hubbie this is the mix I use:

1/3 oats
1/3 oat bran
1/3 milk
1/3 water
1 thin sliced banana

Sometimes I find that I don’t have enough liquid and the oats end up kind gummy. When you make yours for one, I notice you have 1/3 oats milk AND water. Can you help me adjust this liquid problem? :)

I greatly appreciate your help! Love your blog!

39 Sarah Leigh February 2, 2011 at 11:17 am

Oops! I meant to write this!

2/3 oats/oatbran
2/3 milk
2/3 h2o
1 sliced whole banana

This is how I make it, and I don’t ever have enough liquid, its gets gummy and I have to add more water.

Thanks! Sorry for posting twice!

40 KathEats February 2, 2011 at 1:52 pm

I think you should double your liquid!! I’ve been adding a bit more water (same amount of milk) for when I use oatbran, as I think it requires a bigger water:grain ratio than regular oats do. Just add more – it may take slightly longer to cook, but you’ll get more volume.

41 Sarah Leigh February 2, 2011 at 9:16 pm

Thanks so much! I’ll try to double the H20 tomorrow! <3

42 Marieke February 3, 2011 at 6:18 am

I’ve been using 1/2 cup oats, 1/2 cup milk, 1/2 cup water, 1 squashed banana and it turns out perfect every time, I just add whatever more I fancy. Maybe it depends on the type of oats as well? I use Scottish oats.

43 Liz @ Tip Top Shape February 2, 2011 at 11:26 am

Your oats always look so tasty!!

44 Nicole February 2, 2011 at 11:28 am

Those flowers are so vibrant and beautiful! Wow!

45 Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table February 2, 2011 at 11:30 am

When you add cottage cheese… does the “small curd” really stand out or does it smooth out? I have an irrational fear of cottage cheese, but that oatmeal looks deliciously fluffy!

46 KathEats February 2, 2011 at 1:53 pm

I’d say it MOSTLY smooths out but there are curds visible. Don’t be afraid! Just get a good organic cottage cheese (I like Whole Foods’ and Organic Valley’s) and skip that fat-free mumbo jumbo.

47 Marieke February 3, 2011 at 6:21 am

I so agree. I use organic yoghurt and it’s full fat, so much better than low fat and it fills me up so much more. It feels more nourishing somehow! I love this brand in the UK:

48 kate February 2, 2011 at 11:30 am

Tulips just scream spring!

49 Namaste Gurl February 2, 2011 at 11:32 am

Happy day!

50 Laura February 2, 2011 at 11:33 am

I’m loving the last picture….it looks like something staged for a magazine. You have an amazing eye for beauty. And the oatmeal looks yummy too. Can’t wait to get to a store to buy stuff to start making your awesome oatmeal recipies…..after we get unburied from the ice and snow.

51 KathEats February 2, 2011 at 1:53 pm

Thanks Laura :)

52 Kiran February 2, 2011 at 12:00 pm

I want me some tulips! And don’t mind if I get your oats too 😉

53 dana @ my little celebration February 2, 2011 at 12:02 pm

Lovely pictures! I am very much looking forward to spring, too. Hope you and Matt have a great day!

54 chelsey @ clean eating chelsey February 2, 2011 at 1:15 pm

Boo to some horrible winter weather – I’m feeling the winter crunch over here too!

55 Jessica February 2, 2011 at 1:59 pm

6″ of snow overnight and it’s still snowing now!

I have a set of plates that look almost like the exact same pattern of your bowls :) I try to position my food so I can still see the patterns!

56 [email protected] February 2, 2011 at 2:58 pm

Fresh flowers bring such a lovely ambiance to the table!

57 lauren @ spiced plate February 2, 2011 at 3:45 pm

so lovely…spring will come early, supposedly — as a blizzard whirs snow around outside my window right now, I’m having a hard time agreeing…but I love the snow. :)

58 Hannah February 2, 2011 at 6:28 pm

Kath, you need to buy some rosewater to go in your oats! It lends such a lovely springtime flavour :)

59 Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin February 2, 2011 at 6:36 pm

At least the groundhog saw his shadow today! So that means that spring is coming soon!

60 Alaina February 2, 2011 at 10:40 pm

Spring is just radiating from those pictures. Makes me long for the sunshine! :-)
