Rain On My Parade

April 21, 2010

A delicious packed lunch shot in the rain for the love of natural light!!

IMG_0848 (640x427)

Perhaps there are some nutrients in those rain droplets ?

[And hopefully no pollution! ]

Today I packed another salad – because it was the easiest thing to pack!! I try to alternate between salad + yogurt or sandwich + fruit/veggie sides type combos.

Today’s salad was exciting thanks to a few more toppings:

IMG_0854 (640x427)

Spinach base with carrot, celery, pepper and broccoli (the staples) topped with raisins, some hemp seeds I brought back from One Lucky Duck (yes, they survived that journey!) and a little of Annie’s Goddess dressing, which I like a lot but don’t use often because it takes the right kind of salad (no cheese or hearty toppings) for me to like it.

IMG_0857 (640x427)

My protein-rich side dish is an Oikos with some Galaxy Granola – cranberry orange!

IMG_0851 (640x427)

And lastly, a Food For Life tortilla for chew to contrast crunch.

IMG_0849 (640x427)

Afternoon snack to be consumed around 4PM will be an Alliebar!! My second-to-last because I shared with Emily and Lauri.

Is it really Wednesday?!

Love seeing what your salad mix is for the day. And do you eat the tortilla plain alongside it or wrap any of the salad up inside? BTW… I love your little umbrella icon! Where do you find your codes??

2 Kath April 21, 2010 at 12:43 pm

I just ate it plain!

3 Freya @ Brit Chick Runs April 21, 2010 at 11:32 am

Yummy lunch! I think you should use your powers of influence (being a big shot blogger and all :p) to persuade Allie to market her bars worldwide! Pure and simply cos I desperately want to try one πŸ˜›
Have a good afternoon!

4 Kath April 21, 2010 at 12:43 pm

I’ve tried!

5 tiffany @ healthy little cottage April 21, 2010 at 3:00 pm

Is she willing to at least post the recipe? I can’t find it anywhere and they look divine! :)

6 Laura April 21, 2010 at 5:17 pm

I think she explained on her blog that she is keep schtum for the moment, whilst she finishes her degree, because she may *fingers crossed* be setting up her own bakery/business after her finals? Yay!

7 Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin April 21, 2010 at 11:35 am

Good looking salad for lunch! It’s great how your toppings can really make a plain old salad exciting.

i have the opposite sentiment.. How is it ONLY Wednesday!? That might have something to do with the fact that I worked all weekend.

8 Jessica @ How Sweet April 21, 2010 at 11:41 am

Love your salads for lunch. They are great inspiration!

9 Lisa April 21, 2010 at 11:43 am

Goddess Dressing is my favorite dressing. Have you tried the Trader Joe’s version? I prefer that.

10 Steph- Exercise Physiologist & Artist! April 21, 2010 at 11:44 am

Yummy!! all that food goodness has to make up for the rain a little!
you are such an inspiration to me.
My last few posts have been all about me trying to find the balance between eating right and doing what I love (Painting!!)
I have turned to frozen foods and have dubbed myself the frozen food queen!
Seeing your fresh foods reminds me of how much I used to LOVE preparing and of course EATING fresh food!

11 Chloe (Naturally Frugal) April 21, 2010 at 11:50 am

You’re so good about eating salads – I got through ups and downs with them where one week I’ll have it every single day and then the concept of a salad drops off the face of the earth for another month or so. I’m thinking about making warm salads too because we’re still in our drizzly weather – maybe roasted veggies w/ goat cheese or something like that.

12 Mastering Public Health April 21, 2010 at 11:52 am

Hah, due to all the secretiveness behind them, I’m sure “Alliebars” will be a hit whenever she decides to somehow market them or release the recipe. Hope the sun comes out for all of us… actually, maybe not, or else I won’t be inspired to finish my work.

13 Heather (Heather's Dish) April 21, 2010 at 11:52 am

what a fabulous lunch! i wish it would rain here…it’s just super cloudy and gross looking but nothing’s happening!

14 Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg April 21, 2010 at 11:56 am

I’ve been adding hemp seeds to my sandwiches and salads– it’s a delicious addition!

15 shannon (the daily balance) April 21, 2010 at 11:57 am

also interested if you have the tortilla plain or if you wrap some salad inside. totally agree with your take on Annie’s Goddess dressing! i cannot use it when there is cheese on my salad! – which is basically ALL THE TIME, so sadly, i rarely use it!

16 Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope April 21, 2010 at 12:09 pm

Those granola bars look so good! Hope it stops raining for you today!

17 Cynthia (It All Changes) April 21, 2010 at 12:13 pm

That dressing is great but it does kind of take the right kind of salad.

Sorry you got rained on. But it is fun to play in the rain.

18 Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) April 21, 2010 at 12:16 pm

We had the rain yesterday and it really cleaned up a lot of the pollen! Thank goodness! Salads are really the best lunch and it is all about the toppings! Have a great afternoon!

19 Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter April 21, 2010 at 12:34 pm

I can’t believe it’s Wednesday either. I just can’t wait till Thursday is over, I have a HUGE project due tomorrow (which I am currently taking a break from :) )

20 Erin (Travel, Eat, Repeat) April 21, 2010 at 12:36 pm

It was definitely a soup kinda day for me. It’s not too chilly but after so much nice weather lately, this rain is SUCH a drag.

21 Jenn (www. j3nn.net ) April 21, 2010 at 12:41 pm

Salads are the best! There’s so many ways to eat them. Yummm πŸ˜€

22 Shawna @ Balancing Me April 21, 2010 at 12:43 pm

I’m digging into a gigantic salad as we speak! Yours looks so good! So fresh and delicious, I’m lovin’ it.

23 Carolyn @ lovinlosing April 21, 2010 at 12:48 pm

Bleh to the weather. It’s the same here. I guess I’ll be going to the gym rather than on a run. :(

24 Jenny April 21, 2010 at 12:51 pm

I know! How fast is this week going by?!?

25 Sarah (OC2Seattle) April 21, 2010 at 1:18 pm

Raining here too, but at least the week is flying by!

26 Sweet Mama Jane April 21, 2010 at 1:19 pm

Hi Kath,
I just wanted to say thank you for your post about looking at your injury-induced exercise hiatus as a gift of time. I have a serious case of tendonitis in my right achilles, and have been benched from running for 10 days now. I had been SO frustrated and upset, as I was really getting in a great running groove and upping my mileage and speed seriously for the first time since having my baby… this is such a setback! But, your post really spoke to me. As a new mom, I rarely have time for myself, so you have convinced me to look at that hour I would have spent out running as a time to just chill and take care of myself. Right now for example :)… I’m icing my leg and enjoying some blog time. This attitude adjustment is really priceless. Thank you so much.

27 Kath April 21, 2010 at 7:27 pm

Thanks Sweet Mama! Wishing you a speedy recovery. And enjoy your me time in the meantime!

28 jen trinque April 21, 2010 at 1:26 pm

I’m having my own version of a peanut butter sandwich today after seeing yours the other day – tomorrow I’m going to have to have a salad since yours looks so good.

29 Jessie April 21, 2010 at 1:30 pm

Goddess is a lovely addition to nearly every salad – although I like cheese with it, too :)

I hopre your internship is going well!

30 KatieTX April 21, 2010 at 1:34 pm

Fun fact: All rain is slightly acidic. Normal pH is 5.0, acid rain runs 3.0. Rain would be like vinegar to your salad! Not great to consume though as it definitely has some pollutants! This is what I get for studying atmospheric chemistry! More of a reason for the rain to go away!

31 Johanna B April 21, 2010 at 1:35 pm

Miss hearing about your internship. I work in a hospital library and am always interested in medical things. I understand about HIPPA though.

32 Kellie April 21, 2010 at 1:40 pm

What are the nurtitional stats on the food for life tortillas? They look tiny.

33 Kath April 21, 2010 at 7:29 pm

They are 6″ I believe. 80 calories.

34 Jil @ Peace, Love & Munchies April 21, 2010 at 2:01 pm

Those Alliebars always look so amazing.

35 [email protected]://stacey-healthylife.blogspot.com/ April 21, 2010 at 2:07 pm

The cranberry orange galaxy granola is by far my favorite out of any granola, so yummy.

The weather is crappy here also, yuck.

36 Angela April 21, 2010 at 2:31 pm

Man! That bar looked so good I went to Allie’s blog to find the recipe just to find out she’s keeping it under wraps. Sighh we need a disclaimer that they are just eye candy for now. :(

37 marci williams April 21, 2010 at 2:47 pm

i am having trouble ordering off your site, do you still have the special going on the garlic pack? and also I wanted the chia seeds which I can not seem to find in any store anywere?

38 Kath April 21, 2010 at 7:30 pm

The Garlic Gold pack is going through Friday. The coupon is Garlicgold.

Here’s a link to the chias:

39 Katharine April 21, 2010 at 2:50 pm

Just goes to show that natural light, even cloudy, can produce great pics!

40 lynn (The Actors Diet) April 21, 2010 at 2:52 pm

it’s raining here too – or is supposed to!

41 Amber K April 21, 2010 at 2:59 pm

I never thought to eat the wraps plain. They taste great, but they simply refuse to roll for me without breaking into pieces. What a great idea!

42 Lisa @bakebikeblog April 21, 2010 at 5:08 pm

I love how balanced your lunches are :)

43 Danica April 21, 2010 at 5:13 pm

You are soooooo funny. I LOVE that you took your pictures in the rain. You lunch looks delish as always.

44 Camille April 21, 2010 at 5:37 pm

That is one amazing looking salad mix!

45 Jessica @ The Process of Healing April 21, 2010 at 6:44 pm

Your salad sounds good!!!
Gosh, so jealous of the Allie Bars!

46 amanda April 21, 2010 at 6:45 pm

That looks like one yummy looking lunch. BTW, that bar is huge and looks yum!

47 Jolene (www.everydayfoodie.ca) April 21, 2010 at 11:00 pm

I can’t wait to eat outside!! Beautiful!

48 Hannah April 22, 2010 at 2:20 am

Oooh, you shared? You’re a better woman than I. I think I would have gone into hoard mode had I had an Allie who gave me Alliebars πŸ˜€

49 Tracy April 22, 2010 at 9:11 am

How did you like the hemp seeds on your salad? Did they get lost? I have some and I’m looking for ways to use them!
