Queen City Birthday

June 16, 2014

Happy Weekend!! Matt went on his annual trip to the National Homebrew Conference, so Mazen and I took a road trip of our own – down to Charlotte to visit our BFFs Caitlin and Henry!!

Henry happened to be turning TWO over the weekend, and we were thrilled to be able to celebrate with him! He is the cutest!

We had a wonderful time hanging out with the Boyles. Mazen got Henry some Thomas the Train bath toys that were a big hit!

The food in their house is so healthy and delicious. Upon our arrival I feasted on this salad made up of Caitlin’s fridge crumbs. She sure knows how to prepare for salad consumption!

Later that evening we headed out on a double date with the boys {Caitlin’s husband was still at work}

We went to the famous The Cowfish Sushi and Burger Bar! The last time I was in Charlotte we had tried to go but the line had been an hour long, so we ended up somewhere else. When I tweeted at the time, Cowfish tweeted me back and invited me in the next time I was in Charlotte. Two years later I took them up on the offer for dinner on the house!

Mazen was pumped!

Henry knew we were in for a treat

Check out how cute this kiddo bento was. A slider, sweet potato fries, oranges, a rice krispie treat with a swedish fish and a tattoo! A big hit and full of surprises!

I tried three of the specialty rolls for my dinner – all seafood {FYI, the Cowfish menu is MASSIVE – so many choices!}

First off: Riggs R&R Crabcake roll. Tuna, avocado, and cream cheese topped with crabcake and baked. Loved the cream cheese + crab combo!

Next, the Foreplay Roll: Fried oyster, tempura asparagus inside, topped with salmon, sweet eel sauce. Served with spicy mayo. I don’t think I’ve ever had fried oyster sushi before – a new fav!

But my favorite roll was this mango-avocado bomb!

The Neon Dion Roll: Tempura coconut shrimp, kani, English cucumber inside, coated in tempura flakes. Topped with fresh mango, avocado, spicy honey marmalade and coconut flakes. Mango + coconut for the win!

I took plenty home for lunch the next day. Thank you Cowfish for the special treat! I didn’t have room for any burger-sushi because I’m a seafood fanatic, but next time I’m going to the wild side : )

A little energy burning before bedtime

We had the best time watching So You Think You Can Dance and eating chocolate after the boys were in bed both nights. Love that show!

For breakfast the next morning we had a big spread of things, including eggs with spinach, fruit and Great Harvest Gluten X bread I brought. The perfectly steeped English tea was my favorite part!

The boys had a little trouble with sharing, but otherwise they got along great.

We took them on a walk after breakfast in the Bobs

Then we all went swimming!

We went by Great Harvest to say hi and buy some bread

It’s shocking to me that we lived in Charlotte for 5 years. It seems like SO long ago!! I drove by our old house to say hello : )

A late lunch – leftovers!! Yuuuuum.

Those of us who were not pregnant enjoyed some vino for cocktail hour.

And while we relaxed, the kiddos played and the grownups filled water balloons for Henry’s party!

For dinner we had Emily’s famous black bean burgers along with a plethora of veggies, quinoa and salad.

Ready, set GO!

We are taking them to the beach together soon – can’t wait!

Final breakfast!! And fuel for the big party. Eggs, blueberries, PB toast and more tea.

Henry had about 15 of his friends over for his party, and it was so much fun! Great weather and lots of water splashed by all.

We ate pizza, watermelon and cake!

Cute Henry!

Happy birthday to you!

My weekend was To Be Continued somewhere else….!

What great pictures. I follow both of your blogs so it’s fun to see you guys in the flesh together! The boys are adorable.

2 Ali @ Peaches and Football June 16, 2014 at 7:32 am

Awww I can’t get over how adorable those two little guys are together. All smiles and giggles. :) I’ve always thought it was fun to drive back and see houses I lived in before – lots of good memories.

3 Grace June 16, 2014 at 7:38 am

Y’all look so healthy and happy :) thanks for sharing your weekend fun!!

4 Michelle June 16, 2014 at 7:39 am

Hey Kath, I am having some problems with your logo. It blocks off some of the text and picture at the top of your blogs. Not sure if it’s just me? I tried a different browser and still had the same problem.

5 KathEats June 16, 2014 at 2:27 pm

Hi Michelle, it’s likely a caching problem. I’m sorry about that! Can you try pushing F5?

6 Michele S. June 16, 2014 at 5:48 pm

I’m having the same problem. F5 didn’t fix it for me.

7 Mandy June 16, 2014 at 10:42 pm

It might be a Mac thing. F 5 does nothing

8 Michele S. June 17, 2014 at 6:52 pm

I don’t have a Mac. It’s still there for me on Tuesday’s post too.

How cute is that kiddie bento box?! Looks like he had a great birthday weekend and the boys had fun together!

10 Katie @ Peace Love & Oats June 16, 2014 at 8:07 am

Awwww these photos are all so cute! How fun for Henry that he got a buddy to play with on his birthday weekend! And I LOVE the double date at the sushi restaurant!

11 Katie @ Talk Less, Say More June 16, 2014 at 8:25 am

How freaking adorable! Was this the first time the two boys met? They already look like BFFs! :)

12 [email protected] June 16, 2014 at 8:37 am

Such gorgeous photos! Mazen must be pretty tall, he looks almost taller than Henry! The sushi looks and sounds divine, so inventive!!! Especially the mango and avocado one of course..#iloveshrimp

13 CaitlinHTP June 16, 2014 at 11:11 am

Mazen is tall I think but Henry is just short too :) he didn’t really luck out in the height genetics category… :)

14 Mandy June 16, 2014 at 10:45 pm

He is adorable!!

15 [email protected] June 16, 2014 at 8:56 am

You have me craving sushi now…at 8:00 in the morning:)

16 Chelsea @ Designs on Dinner June 16, 2014 at 9:03 am

The sushi looks incredible! And your two boys are so cute together.

17 Lys June 16, 2014 at 10:18 am

How do you capitalize on a free dinner offered via Tweet 2 years ago?
I totally wanna know how that’s done because I’m impressed by the restaurant for following through.

18 KathEats June 16, 2014 at 11:04 am

Haha Caitlin knows the manager so she reconnected us

19 Jennifer June 16, 2014 at 3:40 pm

I’m impressed that the restaurant gave you a free meal two years later just because you had to wait and didn’t stay. Just like others have said, it’s a hard place to get into… when we’ve gone, we expect to wait AND pay. 😉

20 KathEats June 16, 2014 at 5:37 pm

This was more about social media connections than the wait!

21 Bonnie June 16, 2014 at 8:03 pm

Very cool! Your choices looked delicious! An amazing meal at a popular spot for just the 20-something bucks in tips? Totally worth a 2-year wait :)

22 Ali June 16, 2014 at 11:17 am

What a fun weekend!! I love the kids bento box too:)

23 Emily @ Life on Food June 16, 2014 at 11:41 am

Those two are so cute together. I love them playing outside. Why are little kids shoes so precious? Glad you had a great trip back.

24 Cait's Plate June 16, 2014 at 11:54 am

This looks like such a perfect weekend. So jealous you guys were able to get into Cowfish! Literally every time we stop by to try for it it’s a 2 hour wait! One of these days…

25 Livi June 16, 2014 at 12:00 pm

That striped skirt is so cute!!

26 Alex @ Kenzie Life June 16, 2014 at 1:16 pm

Sounds like a great weekend! Henry and Mazen are so cute!

27 Polly @ Tasty Food Project June 16, 2014 at 2:24 pm

What a fun weekend! Looks like the boys had a great time!

P.S. That sushi looks AMAZING!!! Yum!

28 Lauren @ Focused To Be Fit June 16, 2014 at 3:37 pm

After the sushi pictures, I’m very thankful that I’ll be having it tomorrow because it looks delicious!!!

29 lauren June 16, 2014 at 4:17 pm

That looks like such a fun weekend! Traveling to see friends looks like an absolute blast…this post comes at a good time b/c my hubs is trying to convince me to move out of state in the near future. So far, he’s interested in Southport, NC. We’ve talked about NC or TX before. He likes that Southport is close to the water, do you know anything about that area?
I’ve been to Mooresville for work a couple times and everyone was much friendlier than they are up north.

30 KathEats June 16, 2014 at 8:02 pm

Southport is beautiful and right near our beloved Bald Head Island! It’s a pretty small town, but Wilmington is close by. However, Wilmington is a small town itself. Go watch the movie Save Haven!! It’s set in Southport and so pretty (although yes, it’s a movie!)

Quick techie question – I’ve been winding my way through your archives (which I love and have helped me tremendously is working out portion control.) My question is this – a lot of the old photos seem to have been replaced with logo photos that say I heart Kath Eats.com. Am I doing something wrong or have a lot of the older photos been removed?
Thanks so much for your help – your website (and you) have been invaluable in getting me back on track to eating healthy and mindfully.

32 KathEats June 16, 2014 at 8:02 pm

I’m sorry Laura! I’m having a bit of a caching glitch and am working on it.

33 Claire June 16, 2014 at 7:22 pm

That sushi looks amazing! I’ve never thought to have it as leftovers – would the raw fish be something to worry about he next day?

34 KathEats June 16, 2014 at 8:01 pm

It shouldn’t be if you keep it out of the temperature danger zone and in the fridge

35 Alison @ Daily Moves and Grooves June 16, 2014 at 10:15 pm

Holy smokes that sushi looks so fantastic! Those are some of the most unique rolls I’ve ever seen.
Looks like a really fun weekend in Charlotte!
PS— you’re lookin’ tan and awesome!

36 Donna June 17, 2014 at 10:56 am

As a Charlotte resident, I love Cowfish! My husband works uptown and often swings by there on his way home from work and gets take out! That way, no waiting! Our favorite rolls are the Tropical Storm roll and Mark’s Roll + avocado (at the bartender’s suggestion). But our all time favorite is the tuna “nachoes” on the appetizer menu. Omg, is it delicious with the fresh tuna, guacamole, diced tomatoes, and spicy mayo on wonton chips! To die for!
We need to try the foreplay roll. We don’t care for the one topped with the crabmeat and baked, because there is something yucky about warm sushi, IMO!
Never had a burger there because I love sushi too much, although they look awesome. You know Cowfish is putting in a restaurant at Universal Studios in Fla, right?

37 Kristy June 17, 2014 at 7:11 pm

Did Matt attend the Homebrew conference in Grand Rapids, Michigan? I live in GR!

38 KathEats June 17, 2014 at 9:26 pm

Yep! He loved it!

39 Erin June 18, 2014 at 8:54 am

I’d love to hear more about the Homebrew Conference! Any chance Matt would do a guest post? :-)

40 Amelia @ Eating Made Easy June 19, 2014 at 6:22 pm

Isn’t it so great to have long-time friends with kids the same age? Such a treat.

Also I just learned my friend Ashley (Edible Perspective) knows you both from Charlotte! Small blogger world 😉
