Play, Work, Fly

May 10, 2010

Gonna be a busy day!

Since I’m traveling right after work, Matt and I got up early to squeeze in a workout at the gym. The alarm went off at 5 and we were on our way by 5:45. That didn’t leave much time! – 45 mins for both transit and our workout.

Had a few bites of banana before we left…

IMG_2531 (640x427)

We biked there (I wouldn’t bike in the dark alone, but with him and the light on my bike, I felt safe) and then I did 20 minutes of Stairs. We joined together for 5 minutes of quick weights before we headed back out the door just as the sun was rising. Glad I got it in! I’m taking tomorrow off (obviously, because I’ll be really busy and I didn’t need to haul workout clothes there for one day) and am glad I got in a little sweat today.

Once home and showered, I gobbled down some delicious overnight oats!

IMG_2539 (640x427)

So excited about this bowl!!!!!!!!!! I’m a bowl-a-holic, no doubt. This is the RAMEN BOWL from Flavour Design. The Ramen bowl is the Buddha bowl’s funky older sister!

IMG_2326 (640x427)

IMG_2327 (640x427)

Like the Buddha bowl, the Ramen bowl fits in the palm of your hand. It’s more upright – perfect for liquids that might spill! [Ahem, SIAB!] The Ramen bowl comes with a set of chopsticks that fit into little holes and slots, but oatmeal is a bit hard to eat with chopsticks, so long-handle iced tea spoons work well too ;)

IMG_2334 (640x427)

The Ramen is NOT YET in my shop but it will be SOON!!!!

The Mix

(Was awesome!)

Last night I combined (NO cooking)

  • 1/3 cup rolled oats
  • ~1/2 cup greek yogurt
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1/2 tbsp chia seeds
  • Pinch salt, splash vanilla, sprinkle cinnamon

This AM I topped with (still NO cooking!)

  • Some banana
  • Chopped strawberries
  • Kashi Cinnamon Harvest biscuits (I had a coupon for a Kashi cereal and studied all of the ingredient lists lately. I have come to the conclusion that all Kashi is not created equal. Meaning, Kashi does not equal real food. These Cinnamon Harvest had one of the simplest ingredient lists and they taste awesome!)
  • A few almonds
  • Spoonful Nuttzo PF

IMG_2541 (640x427)

IMG_2542 (640x427)

Teacup size coffee since it was all caf

Now on to work –> straight to the airport.

Hi Kath

I am finding the new font less clear for reading…
would you consider trying out some other fonts
(and curious why would one “have” to change former font as you wrote?)

Thanks-it’s just not as smnooth a read for me anymore, but perhaps
I am the only one finding this?

But obviously your focus is elsewhere at the moment-do take care
and be good to yourself at this emotional family time.
Sympathy to you.

You have piqued my interest in your findings regarding ingredients within Kashi. I have always been a big Kashi buyer due to the notion that I didn’t HAVE to scour the ingredient list. Now I will be checking them out. Thanks. PS: Love the bowl!

I have seen others make overnight oats where they stir in the yogurt in the morning instead…not sure which is better way.

Question – do you ever take vertical images (portrait alignment)? Or do you purposefully keep them all the same in landscape?

Hi Kath!

That looks delicious! I’m a big fan of kashi – what are your thoughts on the GoLean cereals? (both Crunch and plain)? I love their high protein/fiber counts and find them more filling than others. Are they “real foody” enough? Would love your thoughts!

Katie

Reply

38 Kath May 10, 2010 at 12:39 pm

I used to eat them, but I don’t like the Crunch anymore. The soy protein isolate and added fiber are no longer on my “to buy” list.

Reply

39 Sam May 10, 2010 at 12:45 pm

Hi,
Not Kath, but I want to put in my two cents. I used to love the go lean crunch (so tasty!) but I had to give it up because of the soy in it. My body can handle soy but in a pure or fermented way. (beans, tofu, tempeh) but those highly processed forms of soy (soy protein isolate, etc) do a number on me. Also I’ve read that we need to be careful about too much soy (especially such modified versions) because it does change your hormone balance. And the reason its so tasty is that its quite high in sugar.

41 Kelly May 10, 2010 at 9:05 am

finally someone else who agrees with me!!!! Kashi does not equal healthy! even their healthiest products are often loaded with sugar and they do not use all whole grains. People have such a misconception. Of course many of their products can be a part of a healthy diet and are better than some alternatives but people should be more informed consumers instead of relying on what the company wants you to believe

42 Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter May 10, 2010 at 9:13 am

That’s really good to know about Kashi. I have been looking into a couple of their cereals too and wondered about this.

43 Ashley May 10, 2010 at 9:29 am

I swear this happens more often then not. I JUST finished my bowl of overnight oats…and I raaaarely make them. Our taste buds must think alike! I made an awesome vegan version…was out of chia so I used ground flax meal, coconut kefir, almond milk, etc which worked perfectly. Nice + thick! Layered it with some pnut butter banana “soft serve” and jelly…mmmm. Safe travels…glad you got in a good sweat sesh!

Agreed about Kashi. It’s one of those products that is so advertised as a “health food” (such as fiber bars, granola bars, all nut butters, etc) that people automatically think it’s healthy! But so many have tons of added sugar and other stuff.

Love the new bowl!! Cute :-)

57 Cristal May 10, 2010 at 12:44 pm

Hi Kath, I am also someone who buys a lot of the Kashi products. Would it be possible (when you have some time ; ) ) to write up a post about your finding with the Kashi research that you did? I know I would LOVE something like that when I am choosing my products. Thank you so much!

Reply

58 Kath May 10, 2010 at 4:24 pm

Like others have said, it’s mostly the addition of “natural” soy and fiber. It goes back to the concept that wheat should have its own fiber and it does not naturally contain soy. Adding a little sugar or spice to something is different then processing it so that it contains isolated parts of other foods.

So I just look at the ingredient list. I no longer buy products with isolated proteins (clif bars, Kashi GoLean crunch) or even inulin or gums (although I”m more lenient on that one)

Totally agree with you about Kashi. Just because something doesn’t have hydrogenated oil or high fructose corn syrup doesn’t mean it’s real food. They add a ton of unnecessary ingredients to their products (hello, soy lecithin!) But, their shredded wheat type cereals have an awesome ingredient list.

Reply

62 lisa May 10, 2010 at 7:55 pm

I just bought a box of that same Kashi cereal, only after seeing that it was organic. I try to avoid conventional wheat, which is often made with GMOs.

Reply

63 Lisa May 10, 2010 at 8:12 pm

I agree with the Kashi- some of their products are good, some are trouble. I notice I get stomachaches a lot from Kashi products too- the crunch is so tasty-but reaks HAVOC on my digestive system!

Reply

64 Lisa May 10, 2010 at 8:13 pm

plus- isn’t crystalline fructose just as refined as high fructose corn syrup? Ive been on the hunt looking for results to that (kashi uses crystalline fructose a lot- especially in their GoLean! line)
