Over & Out

December 28, 2012

French toast for a crowd! Cinnamon Pecan Swirl (from Great Harvest) with a dollop of peanut butter, a little extra scrambled egg and a seared pear. I cooked everyone a slice for breakfast.

Plus two cups of regular coffee. I don’t drink caffeinated coffee because I’m very sensitive to it, so I sure hope I’m not addicted when I go back to decaf at home!

Matt and I drove over to Durham to meet up with Sarah and Baby Annabel for lunch and a walk today.

Sarah and me at 34 and 13 weeks pregnant at her baby shower!! So hard to believe our little ones were inside -

And now!

We walked around Duke’s East Campus and then went to lunch at Lilly’s Pizza {because Parker & Otis was closed. Again!}

I had this amazing tofu salad with cherries, almonds, cheese and a lemon tahini dressing – plus those cute pizza crust crouton puffs!

Matt ordered a vegan tofu Stromboli (this pizza place wasn’t particularly vegan – we were just in tofu moods!). He shared a slice with Sarah and me and it was sooooo good. Southwestern-ish ingredients inside with an Asian-ish tofu marinade. Loved it!!

Mazen played rings…

And Annabel was so cute with her duckie!

This afternoon mom and I went to Burlington to try on and choose my bridesmaids dress for Larbs’s wedding this summer. They didn’t have the style I want to order, but I got a good idea of what looks good and what doesn’t.

Then we headed back to downtown Durham for a pizza dinner

We went to Pizzeria Toro, one of Larbs’s favorites. So sad she wasn’t there to go with us.

Unfortunately there was a long wait for a table, but we chatted in the bar over some drinks for a good while

Mom and I shared a kale salad to start

And then the five of us shared 3 gourmet pizzas –

Sweet fennel sausage, roasted peppers, provolone

Soft egg, Old N. Durham Oyster Mushrooms, Arugula

Yukon gold potatoes, pecorino, bagna cauda sauce

It’s so fun to see the before and after photos of you and Sarah! Time flies, eh?! Mmm all 3 of those pizzas sound incredible!

Oh the babies!!! I love that your life hasn’t really changed since you had a baby. So many people think you don’t get to have fun anymore when you have kids. Things change but you still get to have a good time.

3 [email protected] for the Soul December 28, 2012 at 2:14 pm

That’s so true! It’s kind of nice seeing that you can still keep some things the same and fun, even though it may get more hectic :) And that is so cute you girls were pregnant together and now have babies in your arms together! Wish my close married friends got pregnant now, lol.

4 Claire @ Live and Love to Eat December 28, 2012 at 9:46 am

You find the best foodie restaurants! The babies look like BFFs already. :)

5 lynn @ the actor's diet December 28, 2012 at 9:57 am

tofu stromboli sounds really good – i’ve been ordering vegan a lot lately even tho i’m not!

6 Melissa December 28, 2012 at 10:09 am

Too bad this place is 90 minutes away from me (I live halfway between Lexington and Salisbury), but that pizza looks fantastic!!! If we ever take a day trip to Durham, we’ll surely stop!!

7 Anele @ Success Along the Weigh December 28, 2012 at 10:28 am

I want restaurants like you guys have. We are supposedly a hot new foodie destination but I’m rarely impressed anymore. Your town looks worth a visit for the food alone!

8 Katie @ Peace Love & Oats December 28, 2012 at 10:43 am

That’s so great that your babies are around the same age, I have several friends still that I’ve known since I was that little! They’re the kind of friends you know you can always count on.

9 Kristi December 28, 2012 at 10:46 am

Cute babies! I see Mazen in the carseat + Bob. My lil dude is 3 weeks old and we don’t have the carseat adaptor, do you think its worth it? How long do you see yourself putting M in with the carseat? What do you do on your trail walks? Thanks :)

10 KathEats December 28, 2012 at 11:40 am

Definitely for winter… It’s so much warmer than the seat for us. I also like looking at him while he still likes looking at me : ) also easy to keep him tucked in from car to stroller. Definitely worth $40.

11 Averie @ Averie Cooks December 28, 2012 at 10:46 am

I love the pre and post pregnancy shots of you and Sarah and with babies in arms! It’s amazing what a difference a year makes :)

pizza crust crouton puffs = I want those!

And that stromboli sounds fabulous, too! Southwestern-ish ingredients inside with an Asian-ish tofu marinade sounds great after all the cookies Ive been eating!

12 Lindsay December 28, 2012 at 10:48 am

Parker and Otis is closed due to a fire on Wednesday night :(

13 KathEats December 28, 2012 at 11:38 am

Sad. Hope it’s OK

14 Sarah (The Simple Dietitian) December 28, 2012 at 10:56 am

It’s so awesome that the babies are so close in age. So fun. 😀

And I’m now officially in the mood for pizza. Looks fabulous!

15 Kristine December 28, 2012 at 10:56 am

Hey Kath…P&O was closed because they had a big fire. :-( No one was hurt but they’ll be closed for a while for repairs. Hopefully back soon and better than ever! Love that place!

16 KathEats December 28, 2012 at 11:37 am

Oh no!

17 Olivia @ Life As Liv December 28, 2012 at 11:06 am

What beautiful pizzas! I’ve never heard of some of those combos before, but dang, they sound good!

18 a farmer in the dell December 28, 2012 at 12:19 pm

That kale salad looked good! And both of you new moms look fantastic!

19 Lee December 28, 2012 at 12:46 pm

Cute pictures of you two and the babies.

20 Hayley @ Running on Pumpkin December 28, 2012 at 12:49 pm

I think my favorite dinner with family is splitting a bunch of gourmet pizzas. It’s comforting and delicious! Mazen is getting cuter by the minute.

21 Sara @ fitcupcaker December 28, 2012 at 1:09 pm

Aw, how cute. Those pizzas look delicious too :) Who doesnt love pizza?!?

22 Katie December 28, 2012 at 1:14 pm

I didn’t know your sister was engaged. Congrats to her!

23 Tina December 28, 2012 at 1:26 pm

I notice you eat tofu often (or maybe it just seems often to me). I’ve been doing some reading and soy products seem to be associated with higher levels of estrogen. As an RD, do you have any concerns about that?

24 KathEats December 28, 2012 at 6:30 pm

I probably have whole soy no more than once or twice a week. I also only eat whole soy – tofu, tempeh, soy milk, edamame – and stay away from anything hydrolysed like soy bars or protein powder.

25 Amy December 29, 2012 at 3:11 pm

just for the record- tofu and soy milk are considered processed soy and not “whole soy”

26 KathEats December 29, 2012 at 5:06 pm

I’ve always seen them on the whole list despite the minimal processing. Sort of like yogurt.

27 [email protected] December 28, 2012 at 2:29 pm

Matt’s vegan tofu Stromboli sounds AMAZING!!! You’d barely find tofu on a menu in handful of restaurants across the whole of Ireland! Would love to be served up something that looks and sounds so incredible! Remember when you posted the pics of Sarah’s baby shower….seriously only feels like a few weeks ago!

28 Anna @ On Anna's Plate December 28, 2012 at 2:38 pm

Mmmm…that pizza looks so good!!

I love meeting up with friends who were pregnant at the same time I was– so funny to see the babies on the outside instead of big bellies :-)

29 Lindsay December 28, 2012 at 2:43 pm

I really love Lily’s – we went to the Raleigh location when we were there last April and it was delicious!

30 Sam December 28, 2012 at 4:59 pm

Hello Kath, I just need to say that your skin looks amazing! You look great! Do you mind sharing your skin care regimen? What do you use? Favorite products? Whatever you are doing sure is working!! Happy New Year!

31 KathEats December 28, 2012 at 9:56 pm

Thanks! I use Alba Sea Minerals cleanser and moisturizer in the mornings in my shower and Bare Minerals makeup. Not much else!

32 Meghan @Health Continuum December 28, 2012 at 5:38 pm

So neat to see the before and after baby shots! How is it you always seem to find the best restaurants =)

33 Steph @ Steph Stays Slim December 28, 2012 at 7:00 pm

Can’t go wrong with Pizza!! I prefer making my own, but a night out is always a great time!!

34 Sarah (the SHU box) December 28, 2012 at 7:15 pm

Had so much fun! You will have to come back when p and o is open. I didn’t know that about the fire but it explains all the sirens I heard wed. night. I hope they can fix everything ok- I love that place.

35 Elizabeth @ My Neon Running Shoes December 28, 2012 at 9:00 pm

Those babies are super cute together!

36 Katie @ Talk Less, Say More December 28, 2012 at 9:31 pm

Looks like fun!! And who doesn’t love pizza? :)

37 Christina @ The Beautiful Balance December 29, 2012 at 1:56 am

Love the idea of vegan strombolli, but the pizza looks amazing!

38 Eileen December 29, 2012 at 4:44 pm

That kale salad looks amazing. What was in it?

You, Sarah and your babies look great!

39 Allie January 2, 2013 at 12:29 am
