Good oatmeal morning to you all!
It’s crisp and chilly outside, but I can tell warmth is on the way. So are Larbs and Matt! They’re coming for a visit this weekend.
So I warmed up for Friday with a bowl of cottage cheese-strawberry whipped banana oats enhanced with a blob of crusty almond butter. Note I updated the overnight oats page to 2012 with lots of photos and links to recipes! [Also note the below are hot oats
]
And some green tea. Now that the weather is nice, I’m missing my bike. I read in Fit Pregnancy that biking is OK for pregnant women so long as they play it safe, but I’m not sure riding on roads counts as safe, so I’m choosing to abstain. My bike is tucked away in under-porch storage. Can’t wait to get back to it someday!
Have a great Friday and an even greater weekend!

It’s a good thing you live close to the bakery and downtown otherwise you’d have to DRIVE (the horror!)
. Have fun with L + M!
That bike mug is so cute! Have a great Friday
I had similar oats this morning – chia seeds, yogurt, strawberries, & cashew butter. Have a blast this weekend!
I hope you have a great weekend with your visitors Kath! Will check out the updated page for some recipe variations … and just to gaze at the gorgeous photos too!
I think you are making a great choice listening to your gut about riding your bike
I’m sure you will be back out and riding in no time! Also, I love your place mats! Beautiful color.
Happy Friday!
I hope you have fun with your sister!
Those oats look yummy. I haven’t had oats in so long. Need to change that.
I just finished a delicious bowl of overnight oats – so glad I discovered them!
I’m curling up with my oatmeal right now too! Now you’ve got me wanting some tea. I’m off!
Happy Aloha Friday!
Hi, Kath! Love your bike mug! So cute! Can you tell me where you got it? I am an avid cyclist and spin instructor and would love to get one of those mugs! Enjoy your day!
It was a gift from a blog reader who lives in NY, so unfortunately I’m not sure. But if you Googled “Bike Mug” I bet there are very similar cute ones!
Both my mom and I rode bikes throughout our pregnancies. We didn’t have a car to use because we were one car families at the times. In her time the neighbors were horrified but her doctor said she would be fine. I would think that as long as the paths or roads that you travel on are in good condition you would be safe. Stay off of the gravel roads where you could wipe out or are too jarring.
I’ve ridden a few times on paths, but here it’s mostly roads and the unpredictability of other drivers just makes me too nervous
have fun with your family!
Have a great weekend with your sister, Kath
I’m glad you updated the overnight oats page, I need to make some for tomorrow!
Love oats! But love bikes most. I’ve got a 1987 pink schwinn that I consider my “baby” at the moment! Have a good weekend!
Never really thought of biking for pregnant women being any less safe than running or other high intensity workouts…but the road safety makes sense. Precious cargo!
Off to make my own oats for breakfast. Wishing you a wonderful day!
You were (and still are) so active and I’ve heard that active women choose to stay just as active throughout their pregnancy and some DON’t…and you know you best so whatever choice you make IS the right one :
if you get a chance, I’d love to know what you think/your answer to the question I posted on my blog today
I thought about this post re: biking a lot when I was pregnant / thinking about labor. http://www.copenhagenize.com/2011/09/cycling-with-contractions-to-hospital.html
Thanks for sharing, that post is awesome!
She is a trooper!!
Very glad to see cottage cheese in the overnight oats- I thought I was the only one that did that! I just can’t get down with Greek yogurt in mine.
I know it’s not the same at all- but at least you can still do indoor cycle. One of my fellow instructors taught until the week that she delivered- twins! It was so funny to see her on the bike with that huge baby belly – but she was hardcore right up until the end!
Have fun with your guests!
For the anti-slip mat under the rug, I would suggest getting a thinner one. I know you already spent money on the one you have, but for all the rugs in our house we use something like this: http://www.homedepot.com/Flooring-Area-Rugs-Mats-Rug-Padding-Grippers/h_d1/N-5yc1vZb8e0/R-100648257/h_d2/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&storeId=10051
they’re very thin and might solve your problem!
The rug without the pad still won’t fit
Beautiful morning here also…hoping it will warm up as the sun is out in all it’s glory! I love biking…my husband and I love to go biking in Niagara-on-the-lake (Ontario). Lots of trails and wineries to visit along the way! Plenty of B&B’s and great restaurants too…very romantic…we happened to get married there so we have great memories that we are building upon. Thinking about biking around the Finger Lakes…anyone familiar with that area for biking?
I LOVE that bowl! Happy Friday Kath!
Hey Kath,
I use the Quakers Original oatmeal packets. Not the flavored kind. Is that just as good/healthy for you?? I am in college and just empty the packet into a bowl and add some water before putting it in the microwave..
Yup! Plain oats are plain oats!
{You might want to add some protein or fat though!}
I hear a lot about chia seeds and flax seeds. What is the difference and/or the reason people choose one or the other??
It’s really just personal preference or taste. Both are a good source of fiber and fat and have omega-3s. Chias don’t have to be ground and I like their texture a little better. They are also more neutral in flavor.
I’m enjoying a bowl of oatmeal with strawberries right now myself! I switched to your 1/3 oats 2/3 water/milk because 1/2c oats was just too much and I always found myself choking down the last few bites. Never going back! Thanks
will have to try overnight oats next.
I didn’t cycle during my last pregnancy even though some said it would be OK (and I really missed it). I felt like I was clutzier during pregnancy, and clutziness combined with change in center of gravity and crazy drivers concerned me enough to keep me off my bike. Good call for you, too, it sounds like.
That bowl is so pretty!
Have a fun weekend as well!

Those oats look so good! I never think to put strawberries in oats for some reason!
it’s hard to abstain from so many things!! I still rode my bike, but not that often, and it was only an easy going route & path on the beach
Happy Friday~
I remember feeling the need to abstain from certain things while pregnant like certain types of yoga. Sorry about the biking situation.
Such pretty serve-ware. I love the cheery colors.
Hi Kath! I’ve been reading for a few weeks but this is my first comment
I have to ask because I just bought some cottage cheese this past week (I used to HATE it but with all the protein I decided to give it another try!) and I am really intrigued by your oat combo! It looks delicious. What exactly went into that bowl?!? I must recreate it
Here’s what it was:
1/3 cup oats
2/3 cup water
1/3 cup milk
1/2 tbsp chia seeds
1/2 banana
5 strawberries
1/3 cup cottage cheese, stirred in at end
Splash vanilla extract, stirred in at end
have a great weekend, too!
WAHOO it is Friday!!
I miss my bike too
I had purchased a beautiful road bike for my 30th birthday right before my decision to move to Africa. These roads are not really ideal for a bike like that though so I left it at home for the interim. Nothing beats a good bike ride!
have fun with larbs + matt!
I haven’t gone biking in so long. I got my current bike when I was in third grade… I may need to update that
Sounds like you have a great weekend planned! Enjoy your sister time Kath!
Cutest dishes ever. Happy Friday to you!
I love your bike mug! Very cool.
Those dishes are to cute! Have a great day
I ALMOST went with hot strawberry oats this morning but changed to hot apple oats at the last second because it’s so cold out! Strawberries feel like they need to be a summer fruit for me
And yay for a family visit!! When I read “On the Way” I frantically started doing some quick math thinking “there’s NO WAY she’s having the baby already!!” haha
I love your placemats, bowls and cups. So cute!
I’m trying to picture a ver pregnant last riding a bike. I wonder if there’s be any balance shifts?
Your oats look tasty!
Can you add plain greek yogurt to hot oats? After you pour it in the bowl of course. I’ve been wondering how it would taste like but im too scared… lol
I have never tried…I’d be afraid of curdling!
that bowl is gorgeous! where is it from!?
Homegoods, I think!
I’ve never tried cottage cheese in oats! looks good
Not a Dr. but this is my fourth pregnancy and thought you weren’t supposed to bike only during early stages of pregnancy. I’m currently biking as I couldn’t run past 20th week in 1st pregnancy and have swam through-out them all, but have a bad shoulder so biking is the most intense excersise I’ve had access too and have biked through out all three others. Just mentioning incase you really have the urge, but sounds like you have other great options! Love the visulal of your pregnancy tastes, it affirms (gives credit) to my taste changes and just a neat thing to see.
You should obviously listen to your instincts and do what is best, so please don’t think I’m trying to “convince” you to ride your bike while pregnant. Definitely make your own choices!
Nonetheless–your post reminded of another blog I thought you might enjoy checking out. The author is a young woman who loves to bike (hence the name) and biked throughout her pregnancy. Since you’re another super-fit pregnant lady, I thought you’d enjoy it!
http://simplybikeblog.com/
Pretty bike photos. I’m not against biking at all – just biking on the roads here makes me nervous
Totally get that! Like I said–I wasn’t prompted to send the link your way to convince you to bike while pregnant. It’s just that the discussion reminded me of another blog I thought you’d like!
I can only imagine how annoying all the “Oh, really, Kath! Biking is so SAFE! Why don’t you BIKE! EVERYWHERE!” comments could get–people mean well, but your body and pregnancy are yours and yours (and Matt’s!) alone.
Anyway. Hope you enjoy the blog–always nice to find fellow bikers, I find.
(And BIG thanks for BERF! Reading it every day and loving it! We’re planning to start trying at the end of the summer, so it’s exciting and fun to read about your experiences. Thanks for putting it out there.)
That got a literal laugh-out-loud! Indeed–that is very true. Ahhh…the life of a blogger. “Are you sure you should be eating so many greens?” “Are you sure you’re eating enough greens?”
Haha YES! You can’t please everyone so just be you
Its been awhile since I’ve visited your blog, but from the looks it this post, it sounds like you’re expecting. First off…CONGRATS!
Second, I would worry more about drinking green tea while pregnant than biking. Green tea is actually very unsafe to drink during your first trimester and can cause miscarriage. I am an avid green tea drinker and had to stop with all 3 of my pregnancies. But was able to continue, in moderation, after the middle of my second trimester.
Hey Mamato, I’m in my second tri and only have it every now and then. I’m not actually a huge fan of green tea in general! Thanks for the warning though!
Thanks for sharing about the updated oatmeal page … Will check it out. Have a great weekend.
Thank you for being safety conscious re: bikes and pregnancy. There is a prominent blogger who bikes around her city without a helmet, very pregnant, with her toddler strapped in the back (with a helmet). Anytime people comment out of concern they are shushed with “it’s not dangerous!” so I thought I was just an overly nervous person. Your caution makes me feel better and less crazy/uptight.
