On The Road Again

May 16, 2010

Other than the fact that the alarm went off at 5:45a, it’s been a lovely morning!!!

And this jasmine warms my heart every time I look at it! Can’t believe we GREW it!

As we pack up for our trip and prepare for our open house today, Matt’s in charge of the whole kitchen and I’m in charge of the rest of the house.

He made oatmeal with a Great Harvest Oatmeal Mix that he brought home and it was AWESOME!

IMG_2881 (640x427)

It has cranberries, almonds and milk powder in it already so you just add water and slow cook (a la Kodiak Cakes). I’m not sure if there was any added sweetener because I didn’t see any info, but it may have that too. It was soooooo creamy!!!! He just added water and half a banana and it was the best oat texture I’ve had in MONTHS!

IMG_2879 (640x427)

Topped with some roasted almonds, Hemp Plus and a big blob of Naturally Nutty Vanilla Almond Butter! Mmmmmm!

IMG_2882 (640x427)

Cuppa 100% caf so I had 3/4 a cup. Yesterday I was sweating all morning from a caffeine high. I’m so sensitive in the liver and sometimes it’s annoying!

IMG_2884 (640x427)

Karen’s coming at 8 to pick us up and we’ve got a 5 hour drive ahead. I hear the weather is going to be bad too :( Cold and rainy. Hopefully we can still find good food and explore the town.

See ya’ll this afternoon!

The jasmine is gorgeous! I have no green thumb whatsoever, but would love to have something like that in my yard too.

Your oats look delish! Hope the open house goes well today! 😀

2 Freya @ Brit Chick Runs May 16, 2010 at 6:41 am

Beuaitful jasmine! I love home grown plants like that – I can’t garden to save my life, but my step dad does loads of it :)
5hr journey…road trips are fun! Have a good day!

3 Lauren @ A Fit Foodie May 16, 2010 at 6:44 am

5 Ann @ Appalachian Appetites May 16, 2010 at 6:45 am

Listen to some good music and get a nap in the car…and good luck with the location search!

6 Simply Life May 16, 2010 at 6:52 am

What a great breakfast. 5 hour drive, oh Kath I hope your life slows down a bit soon, so you can rest.

9 Diana May 16, 2010 at 7:22 am

That jasmine is so beautiful! :) I wish I had a backyard here in Lisbon. Oh well, I do love apartments too :p
Have a safe trip Kath!

10 Hannah May 16, 2010 at 7:44 am

That mix sounds good, but I”m always a bit sad when oatmeal comes with milk powder mixed in. No good for us lactose intolerant folkies! Hope the drive goes well :)

11 Lindsay @ Summit Sandwiches May 16, 2010 at 7:47 am

Good luck with the drive! At least your stomach will be nice and happy throughout your car time! Those oats (as always) look delicious.

12 Jessica @ How Sweet It Is May 16, 2010 at 7:49 am

I love that Matt knows what to do in the kitchen. My husband has no idea.

13 Megan (The Runner's Kitchen) May 16, 2010 at 7:53 am

I don’t think I’ve ever heard of an oatmeal mix! It would be cool to customize something like that. How is your leg doing? Is the injury all better?

14 Kath May 16, 2010 at 9:42 pm

It’s doing much better – thanks for asking! I’m going running tomorrow and will see.

15 Erin (Travel, Eat, Repeat) May 16, 2010 at 7:56 am

Have a safe drive!

16 Daniel May 16, 2010 at 7:59 am

That’s really cool that you grew the jasmine all by yourselves – I’m working on a garden with my Mom when I get back from Greece and I can’t wait to try to grow a ton of different things! I told her to plant lots and lots of basil while I’m gone. 😛

What made you want to grow the jasmine in the first place?

17 Christina May 16, 2010 at 8:01 am

I love the smell of Jasmine, enjoy the road trip :-)

18 Jil @ Peace, Love & Munchies May 16, 2010 at 8:04 am

That mix looks awesome!

19 Lindsay E May 16, 2010 at 8:19 am

Everytime you have something from Great Harvest it looks delicious! I am green with envy that I don’t have one around here. I am from New York. Enjoy!!!

20 Claire May 16, 2010 at 8:19 am

Hope the open house is a good one for you two! The oat concoction sounds and looks great! Happy Sunday Funday!

21 Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) May 16, 2010 at 8:47 am

Aw, the jasmine is beautiful! The oats look like a tasty way to start the day! I had my first bowl of steel cut oats today and I am a fan…who knew? Have a safe trip and I hope it is successful! Good luck!

22 Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg May 16, 2010 at 9:11 am

We’re at my parent’s house in Louisiana right now, and they have SO much jasmine in their backyard– I LOVE it at night when it’s super fragrant!!!

Have a great time!!!

23 She-Fit May 16, 2010 at 9:27 am

Jasmine always reminds me of when I was a kid. We had it all over our backyard and it would smell so good!

24 thepinkpeppercorn May 16, 2010 at 9:36 am

Looks delicious! And how NICE it must be to be able to eat outside so often… I wish!

25 [email protected] May 16, 2010 at 9:41 am

You torture me with all the great harvest goodies! How fun that they have oatmeal now too :) I think I mentioned this before but when I lived in Reno theyhad 2 locations so I was spoiled. Now I live in Ventura, California and 0 locations :(
have a safe drive!

26 Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope May 16, 2010 at 9:54 am

That jasmine is GORGEOUS! I bet it smells amazing too!

I know you’ve mentioned this before, but what web service do you use for your blog? Was it blue host? I’d like to create my own website, being that I’m an independent yoga teacher, and include a blog, schedule, about me, etc. on it and was wondering what service you would recommend for this? I am on a tight budget, but I’d like the site to relfect well on myself as a yoga teacher.

27 Kath May 16, 2010 at 9:43 pm

Definitely do not go with Blue Host. They shut down my blog last year! I have Dreamhost now and am very happy.

28 Jessica @ The Process of Healing May 16, 2010 at 9:56 am

That oatmeal mix sounds GOOD!!! I wish you could get it at other Great Harvests! Or can you?

29 Stacy Grows Healthy May 16, 2010 at 9:59 am

Have nice trip! Hopefully the weathermen are wrong.

Your jasmine looks absolutely gorgeous!

32 Jenn May 16, 2010 at 10:34 am

If you’re looking for fun food suggestions in Cville, here are a few: La Taza, The Local, Mas[all 3 in the Belmont area], Mono Loco, Downtown Thai, South Street [all 3 on/near the Downtown Mall], or Cafe Europa, Lemongrass, & Michael’s Bistro [all 3 on The Corner]. Mono Loco is my FAV place in Cville for dinner… and if you’re ever in Cville around breakfast/brunchtime, you HAVE to eat at Blue Grass Grill, near the Downtown Mall. Their biscuits & granola are the best in Cville, hands down. Have fun! The weather here so far is sunny and comfortable… so hopefully it’ll stay that way for your visit! :)

33 Kath May 16, 2010 at 9:43 pm

Thanks Jenn. We’ve eaten at Blue Grass before – and I took down your recs!

34 Erica May 16, 2010 at 10:38 am

That jasmine smells SO good- I bet its just heavenly to sit out there. Safe travel and bes tof luck with the open house!!

35 Hillary [Nutrition Nut on the Run] May 16, 2010 at 11:15 am

Hi Kath,
I have a question for you about caffeine: I have always said I’m super sensitive to caffeine b/c when I have coffee (hot or iced), I have to go #2. It jumpstarts my system immediately!!! Decaf coffee also does it, but not as intensely. I thought it could be the warm liquid, but iced drinks do it too. You mentioned something about your liver, so I was wondering if you learned anything in school about caffeine and why it would affect me like it does. Sorry, it’s kinda of funny thing too talk about. Just thought I’d throw it out there! =]

36 Kath May 16, 2010 at 9:44 pm

I don’t think it has to do with your liver. Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant and I think going #2 just is a result of that. I have the same effect, but other hot bevs (and other caf bevs) don’t have the same effect.

37 Jenny May 16, 2010 at 11:30 am

You should make jasmine rice! Yum!

38 Paige (Running Around Normal) May 16, 2010 at 1:07 pm

I’ve never had the GH oatmeal mix. Good to know it’s a winner:)

39 Courtney @ Sweet Tooth, Sweet Life May 16, 2010 at 2:15 pm

Those oats sound quite delicious too 😀

40 lynn (The Actors Diet) May 16, 2010 at 2:37 pm

i’m going to my first great harvest next week – will look for that oatmeal – yum!!!

41 Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter May 16, 2010 at 2:37 pm

The smell of jasmine absolutely relaxes me. It looks like you have taken optimal care of your plant :)

42 nicole May 16, 2010 at 3:21 pm

Kath! A question for you that I’m sure you can answer,
Every time I make my beloved kale chips, there are soggy ones. WHY? I have tried everything. I always dry the leaves thoroughly, s, p, & evoo, and usually give em 2 minutes under the broiler at the end. I put the in at 375 until just browning, usually 10-12 minutes. Do yours do this as well, or is there something you have found that controls it?

Ridiculous question perhaps, but there it is :)

43 Kath May 16, 2010 at 9:45 pm

I would just give them 1-2 minutes more!? I’m not quite sure. If the edges are browning they should be crispY?

44 Lisa @bakebikeblog May 16, 2010 at 5:01 pm

Safe travels! Hope the weather clears for you!

45 Jenn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) May 16, 2010 at 5:08 pm

Those oats look so creamy. They sound delish! :)

46 cathy May 16, 2010 at 5:32 pm

I love all the nut butters you use and have ordered from most of brands you use. However I tried something today I wanted to share. I ground a container of almond butter at our local food co-op yesterday and today I took it, along with the seeds from one vanilla bean, a couple of tablespoons of almond oil, some honey, some flax seeds and some dried bing cherries and whirled it all in my food processor. I must say it is pretty good!!

47 Kath May 16, 2010 at 9:45 pm

Sounds amazing!

48 Melissa @ For the Love of Health May 16, 2010 at 6:26 pm

I love the jasmine and have been wanting some for my yard so badly! I have this tall bird house that it would look just perfect climbing up. Hope you guys had a safe trip today!

50 Sally June 10, 2010 at 7:17 am
