Howdy folks! We had a half day today – how exciting
I took advantage of the extra time to get the SWINE FLU put into my arm
Since I’ll be working at a hospital and since it was free at the Winthrop Health Center, I turned my car around and went back for a vaccination. I. Hate.Shots.
It hurt, but not too bad
We attended a three hour crash course on critical care this morning. ‘Twas very informative! I actually think I’m going to really love clinical nutrition. I used to think I’d hate not working with the FOOD part of the field, but I really love science and the human body and all the math and problem solving that comes with clinical nutrition. It’s very Type A, and so am I
I start my clinical rotation in April, so I’ve got a while to go before I get there.
Lunch was provided for us before we broke into small groups and then headed out.
We had a European spread of salad, fruit + cheese, crackers, nuts, and dried fruits
I piled a mish-mosh of things – salad with olives + olive oil drizzle, grapes, cheese, nuts, dried mango and a jam cookie. Yummy Gouda!!!
And had seconds of salad!!!
I also tried a bite of one of those Kashi Raspberry Chocolate bars – blech! I used to love all of Kashi’s bars, but haven’t been impressed with them of late.

My favorite foods of 2009 on I Ate A Pie!

I am now home, sipping tea and trying to decide if I should eat something before Lauri and I embark on a bootcamp workout at a nearby school! I’m feeling a little empty, but also don’t want to be full for our sprints.
Matt and I are also sending off all of our Great Harvest paperwork today, so we should be getting things going for real in the next few weeks! First to-do: find a location.

ahh… cheeze!! looks good.
Good news on the paperwork front! I can’t wait to hear about all the planning that goes into opening your own bakery! Exciting stuff!
I hate shots too. I haven’t gotten the swine flu shot. That cheese platter looks really good!
Congrats on Great Harvest! That’s so awesome it’s becoming official
That’s a nice spread they put out for you all!! Good luck finding a location!!
lovely spread you had! YAY for Great Harvest!!!!
I’ve been following your blog for a few months now – since I discovered this wonderful “blog world”
Thanks, have a great rest of the day!
I just have to say I absolutely love you, the blog, how you write, and the foods you eat are amazing!!!
You’ve given me so many great ideas and your blog just puts me in a good mood in general, so I thought I would just share that with you today
how exciting for you guys! it’s going to be a ROCKING bakery
glad you get a half day, those are the best!
I’m hoping to work in clinical!
Your lunch plate looks tasty, but they didn’t provide any protein? lol
I have been wondering your thoughts on the whole Swine Flu and vaccination debate. Since I very much admire the way you eat and your lifestyle, I have been curious as to whether or not you have been at all worried about the Swine Flu and what your thoughts were on its vaccination and vaccinations in general.
What a great looking spread! Those grapes are making my mouth water.
Jessica,
I’m not really educated enough to have an opinion on it, but I asked the nurse who came to speak to us yesterday if I should have it and she said absolutely given my future work environment, and I trusted her opinion.
To Danielle: cheese has some protein
Kath, your arm is going hurt tonight and then worse tomorrow…..Mine ached for three days afterwards….
just hearing the word SHOT sends a shiver down my spine . . . no literally needles suck!
Looks like a great spread! I love thumbprint cookies
I keep thinking that I should get the vaccination since I’m a college teacher and some of the kids at our University have the flu, but I’m just not sure how I should feel about the whole thing. Humph.
ummmmmm my hubs BEGGED me to buy those raspberry chocolate kashi bars. He never wants anything like that but thought they’d be really good. He tried one… and now I am stuck with the rest of the box! BLECH!
That is so exciting! Can’t wait to hear more bakery-related things
Ahhhh I HATE shotz!!! I always start blabbering to the nurse in hopes that she gets distracted and forgets to pierce my poor little arm. I have to get the flu shot though because my asthma makes me ‘high risk.’ BLAH! At least your protected from SWINE!
Ah! That’s so exciting about GH!!
And yum! That lunch looks pretty delicious!
I got the swine flu shot a while back, too – no fun! And Gouda = yummy (I had it for lunch yesterday).
Congrats on the GH news! I’m sure you both are very excited to be moving forward!
i hate shots too. my mom told me i would just cry whenever i saw the doctor.
Oooh BOOTCAMP WORKOUT! I’ve always wanted to do one of them! A week at a bootcamp or something would be my dream hen weekend I think :p
I’d almost rather have the swine flu (ALMOST!)
Have a good evening!
I wish I was doing a nutrition course, it seems so fascinating, I;m rather jealous! But poor you with the injection, I hate them
Glad you are through with being vaccinated. Sorry you had to get an injection though. :-\ I’m not scared of needles but I don’t want to get a shot if I don’t have to! Can’t wait to see how your Great Harvest adventure unfolds!
Eeesh I was pretty anti-swine flu vaccine for awhile. But in your case I would have done the same thing. I think that is the healthiest provided lunch I’ve ever seen! Normally it’s junk food! Makes sense though
That particular flavor of Kashi isn’t the best… but I still love the pumpkin flavored one though!
Love how healthy you RD’s eat at work!! Such a great example!
move to PA. I woulc love a GH near me!!
I hate shots so much that I totally opted out of the vaccine. Oopsies, sure hope I don’t get the swine flu!
Great lunch they provided for ya!
Congrats on the great harvest!! Can’t wait to hear more:)
jenna
love the european spread of eats!! dried fruiton salad is a stellar combonnation!
congrats on the GH news!
Ouch. Vaccinations are no fun!
Kath – I’ve been reading your blog for a good while but maybe I missed a post. I was wondering how the idea and decision to open your own GH came about? That is super exciting and actually something my husband and I have discussed doing before (well, not GH specifically, but a franchise in general). I guess I’m just curious how you guys decided to finally go for it. Curious and jealous. haha
Hope that’s not too personal!
We got the idea because Matt is a baker at one. We’ve always toyed with the idea of opening up a “fun lunch place” but had no clue how we would fare or even where to begin. A few months after he started working for Great Harvest it hit us like a brick one day: bread!! We both LOVE bread and we loved the idea of a franchise because the company can help us as much or as little as we need. The more we researched GH, the more we knew it was perfect for us. We didn’t intend to do it this early, but we put in an application because Charleston (our location of choice back then) was rumored to be on the out in terms of availability and once we got the application process going we decided to just go for the gold! (Assuming we could fit the other puzzle pieces into place
)
Awesome! Sounds like me and my husband too. Always throwing around the idea of a nice little place that serves good food.
That’s very exciting and I can’t wait to hear more about your bakery. Good luck!
I completely agree with you on not liking shots, but sometimes you just can’t avoid them!
Hooray for moving forward on the Great Harvest deal!
Not to be a weirdo, but since I’m applying to UVA (as well as several other grad schools for my Ph.D.) it did occur to me UVA=KERF’s Great Harvest. Fundamentally, my decision will come down to the graduate program, not the quality of the baked-goods in the area, but with all things being equal…
Seriously, though, congratulations and that big hurdle!
Haha. Would love to sell you some bread!!
Ohhh what a nice lunch spread!! I’m a sucker for good cheese
I’ll be really eager to hear about your experiences with clinical nutrition! I’ve thought about continuing to get my R.D. (I’m an undergrad), but the clinical side doesn’t appeal to me AT ALL. Good luck!
I’ve been feeling the same way about Kashi bar’s lately. Just boring and too chewy!
So excited for your Great Harvest adventure! Good luck!
It’s so exciting that you and Matt are setting off on this adventure — and we’re all along for the ride!
I love the European spread!! I use to live in Europe
You and Matt are inspirational…I think you’re the perfect couple!!
At lease now you won’t get swine!
How funny would it have been if you just grabbed that big bowl of lettuce and a fork and went and sat down. I’d kill to see that.
Seriously, I wanted to
I need to get H1N1 boosters for my kids & one for myself soon. Thanks for the reminder. I don’t like shots much either, but I put on a brave face for my kiddos.
I don’t like any of those Kashi bars with the “jelly” stuff on them. Something about the texture.
Good luck with your rotations & bakery!! Such an exciting time for you and Matt!
I often wonder if I should get the swine flu shot too. But… argh, I’m the same way. HATE SHOTS!
Yummy lunch Kath!!
Glad you’re enjoying the presentations!! Can’t wait to keep following along!

You are brave getting the flu shot
Love the Mediterranean-style lunch spread — my favorites! (needed bread though
)
Jenn
I love your blog and might I say congrats on your paper work. I see all that great harvest bread you eat all the time and I’m jealous. The closest one near me is 90 miles away! and I don’t drive!
I checked out the Great Harvest website today and it sounds amazing!! Good luck with everything
This is something that I would love to do in the future
Those salads look amazing!
That is awesome! Sounds like a great day! I am really happy for you guys with the Great Harvest. That should be really exciting!
That cheese plate looks SO good!
I hate shots – my boyfriend got the swine flu shot and he complained about it all night. Kind of stopped me from going.
Hey Kath,
looove the blog!! I was wondering if you could give me some insight on a possible hamstring strain that I think I have. I have not been to the dr’s but when I stretch my left leg, the part of the muscle that meets the base of my butt hurts. I usually stretch atleast twice a day so Im thinking it may be from not warming up enough. It does not hurt while ellipticaling, just stretching. I recently cut out a ton of cardio due to too much weight loss and was focusing much more on ST to gain weight, especially lower body for muscle mass.
I know you have a very busy life, but was wondering what you think I should do? I know rest, but it’s so hard for me to do so – I’m a very active person and am used to doing activity everyday.
Thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate it!
-Jessie
That is the SAME place that I might have strained tonight! I really don’t know much about sports nutrition. You have to just go by how you feel. If it’s bothering you, you’re doing too much. Rest is mandatory
Weird! I dont know much about it either. It stinks because while im on the ET or doing ST it doesnt bother me at all…just after while im stretching so its hard to tell whether I should be doing these or not. Guess I’ll take a break for a couple days….it’s gonna be hard though!
Hi Kath!
I know you have mentioned before that you run to Celine Dion every once in a while. I am a HUGE Celine fan and one of my favorite songs to run/exercise to is “I Drove All Night”. It’s very upbeat, you should give it a try! Hope you have a great night!
-Christina
I’m sure I’ll love it

Good choice with the shot – it went around here and the pain from a shot is definitely worth not getting the sickness!
Exciting stuff about the Great Harvest store! And gouda is mah FAVE cheese. Gouda is gooda!
That’s an impressively healthy lunch spread.
I still haven’t gotten my flu or swine flu vaccines… I teach violin so I see tons of little kids every week. Somehow my immune system seems to have improved – (knock on wood) I haven’t gotten sick yet this year!
How exciting about the GH paperwork!!
How exciting that you guys are sending in your Great Harvest paperwork. Congrats!
I really wish someone would open one down here in Florida!
I just flew home from a new years vacation and was served biscoff on the plane. If it weren’t for my favorite blogger I would have never known to choose cookies over pretzels and peanuts (I had healthy homemade trail mix in my bag). The flight attendant even slipped me a few extra for later. I felt so Kath!
Best of luck at the internship, looking forward to your blogging in the new year!
Hahaha. Love Biscoff!!

Yeah I loved Kashi Bars until I realized that the flax bar used whole flax seeds instead of ground and though that was kinda odd!
Yay, glad to hear your interest is peaked in clinical! I had a feeling you’d like it, cuz you’re Type A like me (the RD you met at your SF Blogger meetup).
I need to get the Swine Flu vaccine. I got the regular flu shot, but not the swine and a co-workers wife has it…yikes!
Good for you getting your vaccine…I still haven’t
Congrats on getting the beginnings of your bakery worked out, that’s so exciting!
The dried mango on that plate looks delish. I hate how expensive they are to get from grocery stores around me
Ditto on the “Blech!” How did they go so wrong with chocolate and berries?
Ohhh the food spread looks awesome! Especially the gouda — smoked gouda is my favorite cheese.
