My Wrist

October 7, 2010

The cologne I put on at Banana Republic yesterday is still going strong. I’ve been snuggling up to my wrist since I left the store! Unfortunately I don’t remember which kind it was. I think Cordovan? Must buy this for my husband!

Smoothie in a Bowl -

My smoothies are all so different. Some are liquidy and sloshy, others are more like pudding. This guys was thick, gritty and too sweet! But I still slurped him down. Also, to make smoothies more winter-friendly, leaving out the frozen goods was fun. I just used fresh foods plus milk and it was closer to room temp and didn’t leave me freezing! But maybe the missing ice was why it was too sweet?

The Mix

  • 1 small banana
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tbsp water (an effort to dilute the sweetness a bit)
  • 1/4 cup raw rolled oats
  • 2 tbsp Vega Tropical Mix N Go from the HLS swag bag
  • Small blob of Madison‘s pecan – walnut butter
  • Granola on top
  • Tropical Traditions Peanut Coconut Butter drizzle, which does not magic shell nearly as well as Artisana’s

Coffee, coffee, buzz buzz buzz

I’ve got multiple things on my list today and must be efficient to get them all done! We’re leaving first thing in the morning tomorrow for a 4-day trip, so that means packing is required as well.

Almost the weekend!

When I use fresh bananas in smoothies the flavor and sweetness is way more pronounced, so that’s probably why yours was so sweet.

2 Jessica @ How Sweet October 7, 2010 at 8:10 am

Have never smelled that cologne, but I usually am a big fan of their scents.

3 JenATX October 7, 2010 at 8:11 am

i dont know if i would enjoy a SIAB… but I have really gotten into yogurt w/ mashed up banana layered w/ apples for crunch almonds & raisins.. Only probably is that it only hold me over for about 3 hours.. idk what else i could throw in for more staying power

4 Kath October 7, 2010 at 8:23 am

Perhaps some complex carbohydrates? Oats or something similar for a longer glycemic index. Or more yogurt or more fat!

5 Samantha @ Bikini Birthday October 7, 2010 at 8:11 am

Is that a men’s cologne?

6 Kath October 7, 2010 at 8:24 am

Yes, that’s why I said I should buy it for my husband

7 Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat October 7, 2010 at 8:11 am

I haven’t tried Banana Republic’s fragrances but I’ll check em out next time I’m there. I love your polka dot spoon!

8 Cathy B. @ Bright Bakes October 7, 2010 at 8:13 am

I almost always leave out the ice cubes anymore! If I add enough fruit/veg to make it thick, I don’t need the ice, plus they still stay nice n thick..Yours always look so yummy though too!
Happy Thursday,
Cathy “B. @ Brightbakes
P.s. I put some homemade chunky applesauce on my oats this morning……*swoon*

9 Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg October 7, 2010 at 8:13 am

I love Banana scents– and I love their colognes even more than their perfumes! I think they’re kind of unisex!

10 Amanda October 7, 2010 at 8:14 am

I love BR cologne! Mmmm so awesome that it stayed on you overnight!

11 Courtney (Pancakes & Postcards) October 7, 2010 at 8:15 am

definitely true about fresh bananas versus frozen–i can totally taste a difference in sweetness.

12 A Teenage Gourmet (Sami) October 7, 2010 at 8:15 am

I’m touring Davidson today and I just wanted to let you and Matt know! :)

13 Kath October 7, 2010 at 8:23 am

OH fun!!!! let me know what you think!

14 A Teenage Gourmet (Sami) October 10, 2010 at 8:11 am

The small campus is just like my the college in my hometown, Centre College! I really liked the students and their academic motivation. My family stayed in the guest house, which was super cute! To top off the experience, the fall weather was perfect on Thursday. :) A handwritten letter was even mailed to my house the same day of my visit.
Davidson is obviously an excellent choice. For me, the small size is the biggest con.

P.S. The dining houses! :) Were you a part of one?

15 Kath October 10, 2010 at 8:17 am

Glad you liked it! It didn’t feel NEARLY as small as it technically is. I was in Warner Hall but also Connor my freshman year. The best part of Davidson for me was the academics – the profs are outstanding and I still long to go back and sit through some of the great discussions we had in classes.

16 Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) October 7, 2010 at 8:19 am

I love the lotion at Williams Sonoma that smells like pumpkin spice. I sniff my hands all day after I have walked through there and played with the samples. Good luck getting ready for the weekend!

17 Jaime October 7, 2010 at 8:19 am

Yummy! I’m going to have to copy this one….

18 Claire @ Low Impact Fashionista October 7, 2010 at 8:20 am

I’m leaving for a trip this weekend as well! I’m counting down the hours…minutes…well seconds until I get to leave for the weekend.

19 lisasfoods October 7, 2010 at 8:21 am

I only use ice in smoothies if it’s really cold out, and where we live (western MA), that doesn’t happen too often.

Could the sweetness have been from the tropical Vega? Just the name sounds like it could be a bit sweet…

20 Holly @ couchpotatoathlete October 7, 2010 at 8:22 am

I have yet to try SIAB — I just don’t really like chunks of stuff in my smoothies — I want them SMOOTH :)

Jason and I are taking a long weekend trip in 5 weeks. I can’t wait!

21 Marina October 7, 2010 at 8:24 am

I have to admit, although your smoothie sounds delicious, it just got too cold for them. Hot breakfasts are now in season :D

22 Marisa @ Loser for Life October 7, 2010 at 8:24 am

Haha! You made me laugh about your wrist!

Whoo hooo for almost the weekend!!!

23 Estela @ Weekly Bite October 7, 2010 at 8:27 am

My husband loves Banana Republic Cologne! Smells so good!

Have a great day!

24 whitney October 7, 2010 at 8:27 am

i love smoothies but I hate being cold so I opt to not make them often. I am going to try one without any ice and see what happens.

25 Lauren at KeepItSweet October 7, 2010 at 8:32 am

mmm pecan walnut butter sounds so good right now

26 Amanda October 7, 2010 at 8:39 am

You travel often, do you have any packing tips to share?? I don’t travel too often, but when I do I am always so nervous I’ll forget something. It taked me hours to pack for a simple trip!

27 Kath October 7, 2010 at 8:43 am

Oh gosh, I am horrible at packing! I always want more choices and pack too much. Esp. shoes!

28 Jil October 7, 2010 at 8:53 am

Ohh never smelled that cologne…but now it makes me want to go find it! haha I’m sad that it’s really too cold for smoothies here now…unless it’s a day when I can enjoy them under the covers. haha

29 Erika @ Food, Fitness, & Fun October 7, 2010 at 8:53 am

I love trying perfumes out but the strong ones almost always give me a headache! :-( You’d be surprised how hard it is for me to find mild-scented teen perfume!

30 Jessica@tastyandtrim October 7, 2010 at 8:55 am

I need to try a smoothie in a bowl – they look so refreshing! I hate when I spray a perfume or cologne at a store and forget to write down the name. I tend to do that a lot!

31 Ashley October 7, 2010 at 8:58 am

Smoothie looks yum! Check out my BLOG for HEALTHY HAIR TIPS!

32 Ok Chick October 7, 2010 at 9:00 am

Cutest spoon ever! I want that spoon.

33 Peggy October 7, 2010 at 9:05 am

That smoothie looks absolutely delicious! We’re headed for a 16 hour road trip to Florida ourselves! Be safe on your trip!

34 Heather October 7, 2010 at 9:16 am

I have never made a smoothie without frozen fruit of some sort – love the idea of a warmer smoothie for the winter months.

Good luck with your day!

35 Natalia - a side of simple October 7, 2010 at 9:27 am

Love BR! Sounds like a busy weekend coming up, good luck packing!

36 Liz @ Tip Top Shape October 7, 2010 at 9:33 am

I love finding a really great perfume at a store adn then I’m sniffing myself all day. lol The last one that did that for me was Lancome Magnifique. That one smells so good!

And maybe all the “tropical” stuff in your smoothie made it too sweet?

37 Heather (Heather's Dish) October 7, 2010 at 10:07 am

mmmmmm, banana republic has such great scents!

38 Camille October 7, 2010 at 10:17 am

I love when you randomly spray a scent on in stores and then smell it the rest of the day :)

39 Ashley October 7, 2010 at 10:25 am

Might have been the tropical vega? I found it to taste really sweet! I just made curried millet last night and it was delish! Just love the texture of millet. If you want the smoothie slightly colder – like fridge cold – not freezer cold – freeze your bananas! :) It works great and won’t give you a brain freeze.

40 tj October 7, 2010 at 10:41 am

I wear CLASSIC from BR and I love it- so clean smelling! :)

41 Nicole October 7, 2010 at 10:46 am

I live in Spartanburg and am running a 5K this Saturday. You guys should run it too! Its the iRecyle 5K and half marathon!

42 Kath October 7, 2010 at 1:28 pm

OH I’ll research it!

43 Stacey (The Habit of Healthy) October 7, 2010 at 10:55 am

Oooh, a long weekend away, that’ll be fun. Have a fab time!

44 emily October 7, 2010 at 10:59 am

Do you think the lack of “magic shellness” was caused by the warmer bowl temperature? Or have you noticed it with previous bowls with that brand?

Also, Kath’s readers – if you’ve made your own coconut butter, have you found that the homemade kind has the magic shell quality?

45 Kath October 7, 2010 at 1:28 pm

Yes, that could have definitely been it. Or the peanut butter doesn’t harden as much.

46 chelsey @ clean eating chelsey October 7, 2010 at 11:35 am

I’d be too cold slurping a smoothie right now! Even without the ice – brr! It might have something to do with the fact that I’m ALWAYS freezing.

47 Sana October 7, 2010 at 11:40 am

Perfumes/ cologne always give me headaches so I never try any of them at stores :(

48 lynn (The Actors Diet) October 7, 2010 at 12:03 pm

wish my hubby would wear cologne. he can’t stand it when i wear perfume – such a sensitive nose!

49 Carrie October 7, 2010 at 1:10 pm

Love smoothies in a bowl! I have a thing for drinking/eating thick drinks with large spoons. Love, love.

50 cait October 7, 2010 at 3:39 pm

Katy! I found a new thing to put on oatmeal or toast. Trader hors now makes a pumpkin butter. Kinda like Apple butter. I picked it up and when I was checking out the cashier said its amazing.

51 cait October 7, 2010 at 3:40 pm

I meant trader joes but my phone auto corrected.

52 Mary @ Bites and Bliss October 7, 2010 at 4:27 pm

Smoothies can be tricky..sometimes I’ve had to add so much to make it not taste like ice water and other times it’s so sweet it’s like I poured a gallon of juice in it or something. Oh well, they always turn out yummy in the end! :)

53 Cara Craves... October 7, 2010 at 6:46 pm

I have moved away from SIAB’s in the morning; like you said, they just make me too cold!
I am much happier with a steaming bowl of barley or oatmeal. I’ll reserve the SIAB for warmer weather.

54 Hannah October 7, 2010 at 8:16 pm

Gosh, if that cologne makes you want to cuddle up to it all day, then maybe every single man should get some! :P
