My Ear Hurts

July 31, 2009

UPDATE: I’m moving hosts tonight thanks to the AMAZING help of Jenn + Dustin, who I now owe a big one (and lots of bread!) : ) Not sure when I’ll see you guys next, but I’ll miss you until then! (Hopefully tomorrow morning, but could be later).

Hi All.

Sorry for all the blog annoyance today.

In a nutshell, BlueHost just implemented a new program that punished sites that get a ton of traffic by slowing them down i.e. “throttling.” Turns out KERF was hogging all the server juice and crashing smaller sites. This new program they turned on yesterday punishes the big dogs. (Guess that’s cool that I am one). But BOOOOOO.

I just spent 2 hours on the phone with a really, really, really nice guy from BlueHost (thanks Scott!) who helped me upgrade to WordPress 2.8.2 (FINALLY) and install a plug-in that should temporarily fix the problem.

In the meantime, I’m working with my technical support posse to try to move KERF to a super expensive but hopefully flawless dedicated server. The alternative is just to sit in traffic all day. Which I know you guys would hate.

Please bear with me through this extremely painful KERF surgical procedure.

I’m off to eat lunch, as it’s 1PM and I haven’t even thought about my todo list.

Maybe I’ll have a glass of wine with lunch

Thanks for being so dedicated to your blog and considerate of your readers. I know you spent a lot of time and effort trying to work everything out and I really appreciate that. I hope what you’re doing works out (and cheaply!).

I really hope everything works out really well for you. It really sucks that your blog is getting throttled like that :-( I hope everything gets back up and running smoothly, quickly, and painlessly.

Makes me glad that I use Google Reader so I haven’t noticed a problem :)

drink some wine, kath! seriously. thank you for your dedication to all your readers!

I am sure you have great “technical support posse”, I just wanted to give a shout out to SliceHost where I have my blog. It will certainly be more expense than Blue, but you can start with a smaller virtual dedicated server and upgrading is really easy if/when you need to.

I don’t work for them, just a happy customer.

Oh Kath, it sounds like you may need that wine. Hopefully things get themselves worked out! Crossing my fingers for a cheap/easy fix for you!

Augh, sounds pretty complicated and stressful, but at least you’re getting everything worked out. It will feel so nice when you’re on the new server and don’t even have to worry about these issues. Try to enjoy the rest of your day! :)

Hurry back please :) lol thanks for your dedication to your blog and readers, I believe I can speak for everyone and say we appreciate what you do and put towards your blog.

Enjoy the wine. You deserve it!

I know it is past lunch time, in case you did not have the DESERVED glass of wine with lunch – it is almost happy hour! Good luck with getting on a new server.

I’m sorry you are facing such issues with the blogging. I hope you get it all worked out soon. Enjoy the wine, we will be here when things are back to normal.

WOW! This stinks. Glad to see that you are figuring stuff out though.

I had noticed yesterday that the site was loading slower, but thought it was my old lady iMac having issues. Guess this is one of the burdens of being Popular (it’s all about Popular)

Hope the move to the dedicated server works out seamlessly.

16 Hangry Pants July 31, 2009 at 8:07 pm

Good luck!

17 Bec July 31, 2009 at 8:41 pm

Thank you so much for doing all the work you have in the past two days in getting things straightened out. It’s a pain that they are punishing you for being AMAZING!

Hopefully it will all get straightened out quickly…technology stuff can be really frustrating! Thanks for your dedication Kath!

21 Rebeca July 31, 2009 at 11:15 pm
