Momentum

November 25, 2009

I love the feeling in the air right before a holiday. It seems to be charged with momentum and energy! Andrew is coming over today to brew beer with Matt, and I have a number of things to do on my list, so I decided to workout first thing today. I laid in bed for a while (nice and cozy!) visualizing my day if I worked out first verses if I waited until noon to go and it just made sense to go. I didn’t want to bike in the cold, but once I was going it was fine.

Pre-workout stomach quencher: half a bernaner

I did 26 minutes of Stairmastering and 15 minutes of weights whilst there. I love that I’ve been doing Sculpt and yoga both once a week because I am letting those be my weight training and not worrying about doing stinky weight lifting on a regular basis. But I’m missing Sculpt this week so I forced myself to lift a little. Hated it.

Once I biked home and showered I was sooo ready for breakfast!

I had all the ingredients out for a smoothie and even had the rest of my banana in the blender and suddenly decided a smoothie was too cold and I wanted a hot bowl to snuggle with! The banana went into the pot with…

  • 1/4 cup 9-grain cereal, 1/2 cup water, 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • Pinch raisins
  • Cinnamon
  • 1/3 cup pumpkin
  • 1/2 tbsp pumpkin butter
  • Coconut + a few butterscotch chips (which I think are bad from being in the summer heat because they are waxy)
  • Spoonful Barney Butter

Worth the wait and extra delicious because I was very hungry from my workout!

Pumpkin Spice + Christmas Blend. What shape is that you see today?!

Love that holiday chicken! It’s always a sad day for me when it is too cold to make my morning smoothie!

It just started snowing here in Iowa so I understand the nice warm breakfast!
Sounds like you have a fun day planned!

Way to motivate yourself to go! I find that if I leave a workout for later, it hardly every happens. If I do it first thing, I feel great for the rest of the day!
Oats look wonderful- very pre-thanksgiving appropriate!

The hen at the end is hilarious. I think any form of poultry works for the holiday :-)

I love the holiday feeling too! You’re making me wish it was Thanksgiving again (ours was the begining of October) instead I pulled out a few Christmas decorations. Have a great one!!

I love that you see shapes in your coffee. I did not make it to the gym this morning – I took time out for extra sleep which was needed! I am going to hit the gym tonight, though – super excited to get some lifting done.

I think your coffee is a pumpkin pie that I’ve taken a little slice off the side, hoping no one will notice.

And now after reading your post, I’m singing Black Eyed Peas, “I’ve Got a Feeling.”

Also – I drank out of that same cup this morning! :)

Despite being waxy, those butterscotch chips look sooo good!

It’s funny, I used to hate weights (but still did them) and loved cardio, and now I hate cardio and love weights. Go figure! I think it’s because I see better results from weights, although a good cardio workout still makes me feel good afterward even if I hate it :)

Love your description of the energy in the air before a holiday – it’s definitely true and it’s fun while the excitement builds. Doing weights in a class is so much easier for me – I never do them on my own so it helps me too keep my muscle tone and pushes me to do exercises I wouldn’t normally do.
Have a fun day!

My mom and I just got back from the bakery – the line was out the door! I love doing holiday errands. I’ve been going to yoga 1-2 times per week and calling it strength training, but yesterday I did lunges/free weights and today I’m a little sore. But it kind of feels good…

I think when your busy not working out the am means it won’t happen! Sounds like a blasty holiday! Yoga is totally my weights with my old injuries I cant grip or lift very well w/ my right hand so it’s a lot easier on me to not have to lift.

Hey Kath. I think it’s interesting that you use yoga as your strenth training. I too, HATE WEIGHT LIFTING >:( and love to run and do yoga (I try to alternate each day and take one day off a week). I wasn’t sure if this was enough. Do you think it is keeping you toned? I don’t do a sculpt class because I actually hate the gym and have a planet fitness membership that I never, ever use. Anyone else want to chime in?

33 Kath November 25, 2009 at 3:11 pm

Kelly,
Keep you toned, yes. Build muscle, maybe not.

I am the total opposite! I LOVE doing strength workouts! Jason asked me to put him on a 3 days a week strength routine, so I just do it with him..it really helps having someone there to do it with! And sometimes I watch Biggest Loser while strength training and pretend that Jillian Micheals is yelling at me lol <—-NERD

Aww, I really wish you would reconsider weight lifting. Yoga and sculpt clases are NOT substitutes for weight training. You are neglecting an important part of overall health and physical fitness.

48 Kath November 25, 2009 at 3:12 pm

Eh. Anything that makes my muscles burn and shake is good enough for me and both give me that effect. My Sculpt class is really hard! And I like the way my muscles look.
