Matt + Mat

April 12, 2010

Enlisted the assistance of my Helper Monkey to make breakfast this morning :)

IMG_0353 (640x427)

He’s a great oat maker!

IMG_0360 (640x427)

The Mix

  • 1/4 cup quick oats ( <– I have a huge canister of these that I’m using up in anticipation of our move. They’re not bad, but they’re just not the same as rolled oats. Less creamy and more dry)
  • 2 tbsp 10 Grain Hot Cereal
  • 1/2 banana
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • Pinch salt
  • 1/4 cupish Nature’s Path Granola
  • Crofter’s
  • A few flakes coconut butter
  • BARNEY BUTTER!! ( <– Long time, no see!)

Broke out a jar I’ve been saving for a rainy day. Good thing the sky is bright blue!

We used this nut butter hand crank that Polly sent me ages ago to mix up the BB. I was able to get it into Open Sky recently too! It works sooooo much better than a knife and strong arm. Even if that arm is your husband’s!

IMG_0349 (640x427)

And if the lid doesn’t fit (it does fit most 16 oz jars) you can just hold it while you crank. No problemo. [Licking it when it comes out is also fun!]

IMG_0351 (640x427)

Mmm!

Spring Blend! I told Matt to go easy on the caf because I will probably convert to tea for spring/summer and he responded with “Why?” Ha. I can’t explain it – I just don’t like coffee in the summer!!

That crank is so neat!! I’ve been meaning to buy more Nuttzo from OpenSky, so maybe I’ll throw that in there too…when you eat as much PB as I do, it’s definitely an investment! Have a great Monday!

Ahhh Barney Butter in your OpenSky store?! I may need to get some! I can’t find it anywhere around here!

I’ll need to check out that yoga mat! I bought one from Dicks and it’s super slippery (ugh!)

The oats look positively wonderful this morning! :D

Mmm Barney Butter…
I bought a yoga mat at Target that is soooo slippery. Does anyone know of a way to make a mat more sticky? I have to bring a towel with me to regular classes just so I can do my downward facing dogs!

I don’t like coffee as much in the summer either – well, any hot drinks on a hot day just make me a bit uncomfortable!

The hand crank is intriguing to me- but it just looks like one more gadget that I’ve have to clean up! I’ve never had Nuttzo or BB (live abroad, so they aren’t available), but I’ve never had a problem mixing up peanut, almond or cashew butter with a spoon- do your nut butters really separate that much (or are they really THAT thick?). I can’t imagine!

Awesome bowl of oats, as usual! Enjoy your day :D

Kath – we stir our nut butters by using only a single beater with our electric hand mixer. It works perfectly!

Thanks for your inspiration in your super active workout life!
Sometimes I get a bit down thinking how can she work out so much and have such a
flexible lifestyle (the envy creeping in)…
But lately I have been realizing although you may have a flexible work life, you are VERY disciplined
about your exercise.I could never be as dedicated as you in exercise, but it is good to see
people with that incredible commitment, whether on holiday or in regular life.
Thanks for the inspiration!

On the other hand, do you ever just kick back and have a few lazy days and just turn off the computer? I need more discipline in my life, but perhaps you could do with a blog free week once ina blue moon? You deserve it;) And I can imagine for you it would be nice to be photograph free in meals for a bit!! Go crazy and just be unstructured for a week girl- we all would be happy for you to have more holidays from the screen world, and we would definitely be there for you after every hiatus! Cheers!

23 Kath April 12, 2010 at 12:40 pm

Marla,
Don’t know if this is the best comparison, but I do consider my blog to be my baby :) It’s kind of like asking the tired mother of a newborn baby if she’d like to take a week off of mothering and go to a spa for a week, catch up on sleep, be pampered. Of course that would be nice! But she probably would rather stay with her baby because she loves her so. You know? So while a week off of blogging would indeed be fun, I don’t think it would be worth it quite yet!

The more I hear about yoga the more and more I think about trying it but I just don’t know where to begin! Haha.

The nut butter crank looks like a pretty neat idea; you can also just leave the jar upside down and it will basically stir into itself, just be careful that the oil doesn’t leak! (I usually do this with my tahini before I make hummus.) I don’t think it would work initially but after you’ve had a few servings I’m sure it would work. :)

Oatmeal looks fabulous as usual. I know you’re not a calorie counter (and me neither) but I was wondering if you have an estimate for your usual bowl of oats. I’m always a bit hesitant to use so many toppings because I think I go overboard – you seem to use just a little of each.

I actually become more of a coffee fan in the summers for some reason. I don’t really drink it in the winter.

Reply

43 Laura @ youngDCliving April 12, 2010 at 9:51 am

I totally understand what you mean about the coffee seasons…there are times when I absolutely need coffee every day and then at some points, it just doesn’t appeal to me anymore and I usually end up taking like 2-3 months off it (tea = substitute) and then rediscover it again.

Oh Kath, I’ve obviously done too much anatomy revision today- when you said 25 bones, my brain immediately volunteered- ‘but then I’d only have ~175 left’. There is a reason one shouldn’t study too much- it makes the mind teeter on the edge of imbalance. Looking forward to the day when I’m in clinical too… hope your legs continue to behave + you enjoy your new ward/unit- it puts a whole new imeptus on looking after oneself doesn’t it? ;)

On Saturday, my last day in New York, I filled up my remaining suitcase space with three jars of PB&Co peanut butter and a jar of almond butter. Now that I’m back in Australia, part of my wants to break them open straight away, the rest of me is too scared to because then they’ll be gone!

I need that nut butter crank. I am so bad at mixing and always make a mess with the peanut oil. :(
