Make Me A Wich

January 18, 2011

Sandwichmaker, sandwichmaker, make me a wich!

Before we got elbow deep in sandwiches, we had a pow wow over coffee –

Eat local. Drink strong coffee.

Pickle wrapping!!

Prep for the day ahead

Soon enough it was time to make sandwiches! We are serving the whole GH HQ office today plus some community members.

My first was a roast beef – condiments, meat, cheese

We quartered up a bunch and are delivering them to local businesses

Then it was time to make our own lunches

A KERF-style sandwich includes tons of veggies and lots of flava on Sunflower Wheat bread

I made one with swiss cheese, avocado, mustard, tomato, pepper, cuc, lettuce, S+P

Do you know what makes the GH sandwiches so amazing? THE BREAD.

I wrapped mine into two separate halves with two pickles. I ate one half early (11:30) and am saving the second half for the afternoon – along with a pear.

Hope you all got to eat a delicious sandwich soon!

Okay, now I’m REALLY disappointed you guys didn’t choose Asheville as your location for a GH! I want to try their bread!

2 amyt January 19, 2011 at 11:47 am

I know what you mean…I was wishing for the Jacksonville, FL…..I have been wanting to try it myself – it always looks SO tasty!!

3 Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine January 18, 2011 at 2:54 pm

Those do look like delicious sandwiches- I love how THICK and full of good stuff they are! Though I must say, my favorite part of a sandwich is always the pickle :)

4 Stacy @ Every Little Thing January 18, 2011 at 2:54 pm

The bread does look amazing on those sammies. That’s fun that you’re actually making them for people! Kind of puts the pressure on, but in a good way.

5 Hope January 18, 2011 at 2:55 pm

Those sandwiches look so good! I love how thick the bread is. I totally need to try a sandwich on GH bread! Everything looks so fresh and tasty!

6 Angie @ Musings of a Violet Monkey January 18, 2011 at 2:57 pm

GH Honey Whole Wheat, for ever! It’s my fave, and I buy a loaf once a week. Hello, $20/month, but totally worth it. Yum, yum.

Your sandwich looks delicious. I’m craving crispy summer veggies right now.

7 Estela @ Weekly Bite January 18, 2011 at 3:00 pm

Yum! Now I really wanna sandwich! I love how fresh all the ingredients look :)

8 Annette January 18, 2011 at 3:01 pm

THAT does look delicious! I foresee beautiful sandwiches in my near future…. :)

9 Ashley (The Vegetable Life) January 18, 2011 at 3:01 pm

I just found a Great Harvest like an hour from my house…. I might have to make a voyage this weekend to get me some bread!!!!!!

10 Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) January 18, 2011 at 3:02 pm

You can make me a sammie, anytime!

I love the wrapped pickles…cute!

And your tshirt. I WANT IT!!! Tooooo cute! Where did you score that one?

11 Jessica @ Dairy Free Betty January 18, 2011 at 3:03 pm

I feel like I should tell you about my favorite sandwich… It was from a great little grocery store where I used to live (and before I was dairy free)

Fabulous bread – hummus + gouda, (I think grainy mustard, it’s been awhile) LOADED with veggies + marinated artichoke hearts and sun dried tomatoes. It was THE BEST sandwich I’ve ever had, and any time I go there, that is the FIRST place I stop.

OH YUM! I wish we had great harvest here, it looks fantastic!

12 Trish @I_am_Succeeding January 18, 2011 at 3:05 pm

I’ll take 2 KERF’s to Maine please!! =)

Love all the behind the scenes of what goes on and into all this!

13 Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat January 18, 2011 at 3:07 pm

You’re a pro Kath!!! Now I’m thinking I need to switch professions and go into sandwich making!

14 Emily @ One Sweet Vegan January 18, 2011 at 3:07 pm

I love avocado and lots of veggies on my sandwiches! And plenty of pickles. :-)

15 Kate (What Kate is Cooking) January 18, 2011 at 3:09 pm

Now I’m in a mood for a sandwich- minus the pickles!

16 Amanda January 18, 2011 at 3:10 pm

you’re hair always falls so nicely! do you have thick hair? or is it just the way you cut it?

17 Kath January 18, 2011 at 6:37 pm

Thanks! It’s not super thick. I think it’s just super straight! I do curl it out with a brush (like today) sometimes.

18 Allison K. January 18, 2011 at 3:10 pm

I never remember or think about putting salt and pepper on sammies. I need to do that more often!

19 Yena January 18, 2011 at 3:11 pm

Wow, your sandwich looks amazing! I love GH :)

20 kate January 18, 2011 at 3:13 pm

Pickles! Those sandwiches look great. And I love that GH is so into giving back to the community!

21 Heather January 18, 2011 at 3:13 pm

That looks like a fantastic sandwich – veggie sandwiches are my favorite.

22 Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) January 18, 2011 at 3:14 pm

I want you sandwich!

23 Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) January 18, 2011 at 3:14 pm

I meant your sandwich! The veggies…just to make that clear…

24 Dorry January 18, 2011 at 3:18 pm

Yum! Sandwich perfection. Glad you got some strong coffee this morning. :)

25 Mary Frances January 18, 2011 at 3:18 pm

Here an O N I O N , there an O N I O N, everywhere an O N I O N ! Wow, I am impressed…you actually touched it (well kinda). We’ll make an onion lover out of you yet. All this time hearing about you opening a Great Harvest Bakery, it never occurred to me you would have to have a daily relationship with onions. Vidalia are sweeter and less odor and the best–maybe that could be the one you use in your store? You sure are a trooper, and I have to admit…I did laugh–not at you, but with you 😐 :) LOL

26 Kath January 18, 2011 at 6:37 pm

We might not serve them on our sandwiches..

27 Susan Mc January 20, 2011 at 8:33 pm

naw … really?
I have to say that would make me a disappointed customer!

28 Andrea @ reallifeinrofo January 18, 2011 at 3:19 pm

Ummmm, I just want to take a HUGE bite out of your KERF-wich. Thanks for the inspiration to use guac. as a spread and slice the peppers thin like that. Yumm-o! I might have to have a sandwich for dinner :)

29 Jess (Sweet Potato) January 18, 2011 at 3:21 pm

If you wanted to fly to PA to deliver me one of those heavenly looking sandwiches, I wouldnt complain 😉

30 Allie (Live Laugh Eat) January 18, 2011 at 3:27 pm

Beautiful sandwiches made by a beautiful sandwich maker! That lilac color looks great on you.

31 Liz @ Tip Top Shape January 18, 2011 at 3:36 pm

I had a sandwich today but it wasn’t on great harvest bread :( Looks like you guys are having a great time with all that bread!

32 Amanda @ Just Amanda J January 18, 2011 at 3:36 pm

I am inspired to get some sandwich fixin’s when I go to the store next! I might just have to make a special trip to your GH when it opens to see what all this bread hype is about.

33 Stephanie @ Thorns Have Roses January 18, 2011 at 3:39 pm

Your roast beef looks like the perfect sandwich in my book!

34 Christin@purplebirdblog January 18, 2011 at 3:48 pm

I love your veggie goodness sandwich!!

35 Jessica January 18, 2011 at 3:50 pm

Is the coffee really strong?
I thought that first picture of it was actually tea!

36 Kath January 18, 2011 at 6:38 pm

Actually it wasn’t!! I think I was just thinking that I wished it were…

37 lynn (The Actors Diet) January 18, 2011 at 3:50 pm

it’s so true about the GH bread – i’ve been buying fresh loaves from other bakeries and nothing NOTHING compares!

38 Gill (snaxandthecity) January 18, 2011 at 3:54 pm

love love love deep fill sarnies! you look like a pro :)

39 Lisa (bakebikeblog) January 18, 2011 at 3:56 pm

Those sandwiches are gorgeous! I want one!

41 Heather (Heather's Dish) January 18, 2011 at 3:58 pm

only the prettiest sandwiches in the whole world!

42 Nikki January 18, 2011 at 3:59 pm

That just made me so hungry!!! Your veg sandwich looks so good! I wish we had a GH near me, but the closest is over 200 miles away!

43 Kristy @ KristyRuns January 18, 2011 at 4:00 pm

Avocado on a sandwich?! YES! Gosh, that bread looks good…

44 Gloria January 18, 2011 at 4:02 pm

Can you pllllllllease refrain on the oatmeal snobbery?! I make rolled oats in the microwave every day and they taste delish. They’re just as nutritious as the cooking method you advocate but I don’t have the avalanche of time you have to prep. While my oats are in the microwave, I can check my e-mails, run around getting ready for work, etc.

45 pat January 18, 2011 at 4:43 pm

ha. I agree. instant with hot water added is my go-to on a work day when I’m eating in front of my computer reading emails.

46 Clizia January 18, 2011 at 4:15 pm

Those sandwiches look so yummy!! Great Harvest aren’t planning to expand to Europe, are they? :( x

47 Stephanie January 18, 2011 at 4:16 pm

I will dream of that sandwich tonight. Looks awesome!!

48 Michele @ Healthy Cultivations January 18, 2011 at 4:21 pm

I love STRONG coffee too. I started drinking the Keurig coffee, but I’m not certain it’s strong enough for me.

49 Kath January 18, 2011 at 6:38 pm

That’s why I don’t like Keurig! I love the concept, but it’s always weak to me

50 Maryann January 18, 2011 at 4:22 pm

Looks great! I like how you saved half for later, I totally do that too since I get hungry every couple hours (even if I were to eat the whole thing). :)

51 J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) January 18, 2011 at 4:26 pm

Those sandwiches look SOOO GOOD! Sandwiches are probably my #1 favorite way to eat anything, lol.

52 Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg January 18, 2011 at 4:28 pm

Looks like you’re becoming a sandwich-making PRO!

53 Ann @ Day by Day January 18, 2011 at 4:30 pm

Fun post!! I can’t wait to hear what sandwiches you decide to have at your GH. After all your talk about Great Harvest bread all week, I had to go when I was in Nashville over the weekend! I got two delicious loaves and you were right, the bread is simply delicious. I love how soft it is!

54 Alaina January 18, 2011 at 4:35 pm

Can you ship your sandwiches? 😛

55 Natalia - a side of simple January 18, 2011 at 4:35 pm

Obviously you’re going to have to create a signature KERF sandwich for your GH. Maybe even a tribute to the bears…? 😉

56 Kath January 18, 2011 at 6:38 pm

Ooo I’ll have to think about that one!

57 Emma January 18, 2011 at 4:35 pm

Oh my goodness your sandwich looks sooo good. I must eat avacado tonight.

58 Amanda (Eating Up) January 18, 2011 at 4:36 pm

Like a much improved Subway! Much, much improved…

59 Kiran January 18, 2011 at 4:41 pm

Make me a KERF wich 😀

60 Namaste Gurl January 18, 2011 at 4:45 pm

I WANT GH bread…..arg, is there was only one around me! I’m jealous indeed!

61 Erin January 18, 2011 at 5:01 pm

I have to say… We were in Rochester this weekend and drove by a Great Harvest. We stopped for lunch–The sandwiches were AMAZING! So amazing in fact that we stopped by on our way out of town for more sandwiches, bread, and goodies to take home!

62 Ali January 18, 2011 at 5:01 pm

Wow! Those look incredible, Kath. Still no GH in Pittsburgh, but I’ll have to make it a point to stop next time I’m in Philly.

63 Mary @ Bites and Bliss January 18, 2011 at 5:02 pm

lmho..alright, Matt had better not use this to backup the “Make me a sadwich!” line! Even though you can make a dang good one. 😉

64 Simply Life January 18, 2011 at 5:12 pm

ooh looks like a great sandwich!

65 mary (what's cookin' with mary) January 18, 2011 at 5:25 pm

66 Shannon (A Better Me) January 18, 2011 at 5:34 pm

They are outrageous right now :(

67 Erica D (Gratitouille) January 18, 2011 at 5:59 pm

71 Kelly January 18, 2011 at 6:40 pm

You probably have said this and I missed it, but where did you get your Eat Local shirt? I love it!

72 Kath January 18, 2011 at 6:48 pm

I bought it last night at Patagonia!

73 Tessa January 18, 2011 at 6:55 pm

That really does look mouth watering. There’s something about a veggie sandwich. Nothing like it

74 Cara Craves... January 18, 2011 at 6:56 pm

I love how you can make your own specialty sandwich.
It must be fun to have all the bread and ingredients at your

75 Katie January 18, 2011 at 7:02 pm

Pickles are the best! I love them! My son always loves getting a pickle with sandwiches!

Your sandwich looks so hearty and healthy! An A +++++ in my book!!!!

79 stacey-healthylife January 18, 2011 at 7:18 pm

I officially have a craving for a veggie sandwich!

84 Andrea January 18, 2011 at 7:57 pm

Love the onion pic – hilarious! Your facial expressions are worth 1,000 words! I have found a Great Harvest in Independence, MO which isn’t too far away for me. The next time I head to KC shopping I’m going to stop in and sample the wares….!

85 Tina January 18, 2011 at 7:59 pm

Ok, now I REALLY want a sandwich! They all look amazing. Especially the veggie one for yourself.

I really like your eat local shirt btw.

86 Lauren January 18, 2011 at 8:04 pm

Dying to try me some Great Harvest Bread!

87 Lizzy January 18, 2011 at 8:05 pm

I was happy to see a Great Harvest on my way home from the car dealership this evening in Atlanta. It’s not too far from my athletic center so I will have to go soon to check out what this bread is all about. Can’t wait!

88 Allie January 18, 2011 at 8:05 pm

Great job on your sandwich making :) EVERYTHING looks so fresh and yummy!

89 Jessica @ The Process of Healing January 18, 2011 at 8:11 pm

GH bread is seriously the BEST i’ve ever had.. and I’m a bread FREAK!

90 Melomeals: Vegan for $3.33 a Day January 18, 2011 at 8:13 pm

I wish I could try that bread.. it looks so good!

91 Rachel January 18, 2011 at 8:24 pm

How can you wear an “Eat Local” t-shirt while holding a Starbucks coffee mug?? Made me cringe! There are SO many great local coffee shops that deserve business more than a big chain like Starbucks.

92 Kath January 18, 2011 at 10:09 pm

Do you think I was the one who chose the coffee we had this morning? And it was actually Peet’s coffee – how ironic.

93 Allison @ Happy Tales January 18, 2011 at 8:28 pm

Yummmm! And yes, the BREAD definitely does make or break the sandwich!

94 Ang January 18, 2011 at 8:38 pm

I had to laugh reading this blog! I work at a MN ghbco and I was eating a turkey sandwich as I read! YUM :) hopefully someday I can visit your store, I’ curious to see the fun sandwiches you’ll be adding to your menu.

95 Heather January 18, 2011 at 8:38 pm

What kind of muesli did you use this morning or could you suggest a good one. It looks yummy as well as you sammies!!

Thx Heather

96 Kath January 18, 2011 at 10:10 pm

One from the Good Food Store in Missoula, MT! Go to any store with bulk bins and you should find some. They are usually all good!

97 Allison @ OneWhiteTulip January 18, 2011 at 8:39 pm

Omg, those sandwiches look SO DELICIOUS. Please come open a great Harvest in Leesburg, Virginia! Haha.

Kath, I made the peanut noodles you posted the recipe for a month of so ago. Omg. Best peanut noodles EVER. My husband couldn’t believe he had eaten a meal that was basically vegan, haha. Thank you!!!

98 Diana @ frontyardfoodie January 18, 2011 at 8:44 pm

Mmmmm I love me some sandwiches! I want yours……and all those pickles please because I’m obsessed with them.

Your sandwhich is so colorful with all those veggies. But all your meals always are colorful!

101 Emily January 18, 2011 at 9:03 pm

Your sandwich is pretty much exactly what I would have ordered, it looks so good. I cannot wait to visit my local GH, which I believe is the NH ones that your new friend are opening, score!

102 Josie @ Skinny Way Of Life January 18, 2011 at 9:53 pm

wwwhhhyyy do i not have a GH near me!!?? all these pics have me craving their bread and I’ve never even had it! I’m seriously considering opening a GH now ; )

On an off topic, how’s Karen doing since surgery?

103 Kath January 18, 2011 at 10:12 pm

She’s doing great – thanks for asking!

104 Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin January 18, 2011 at 10:01 pm

Smushed avocado is the ultimate sandwich topping! I always feel like something is missing if it’s not on my sandwich.

105 Kat January 18, 2011 at 10:05 pm

oh what beautiful pictures and sandwiches. Delicious sandwiches!

106 Kath January 18, 2011 at 10:10 pm
107 Samantha Angela @ Bikini Birthday January 18, 2011 at 10:13 pm

108 Sana January 18, 2011 at 10:15 pm

For some reason sandwhiches made by other people taste sooo muchbetter! I am sure your made yours with lots of lovee!
