We made it safe and sound to Hillsborough, although the rain took a while to lighten up. We had plans to go downtown tonight, but had to cancel them and focus all of our attention on the Olympics instead.
We started the evening with some guacamole and chips
And watched a fashion show by Larbs, who tried on my wedding dress as well as my mom’s dress.
Hard to believe my dress is now 5 years old – and mom’s is 35!
Later in the evening, Karen boiled some shrimp for another course – dunked in Old Bay!
And then we finally had dinner – a sub sandwich buffet!
I had hummus + cheeses plus tomatoes, pickle, peppers and mustard.
Plus fruit salad on the side.
We’ve been enjoying the ceremonies all evening. My family attend the 1996 games in Atlanta! Hard to believe this is the same excitement so many years later. I really enjoy gymnastics, diving and swimming and a handful of others, but I am overwhelmed by all of the non-stop options to tune in to! What is your favorite? Of course all of the athletes are so inspiring. I think my favorite part is just all the countries coming together – and I love seeing each country’s native dress in the ceremonies (Cambodia and Bermuda favorites so far!)
Mom made a chocolate chip pie for dessert! My grandmother Younger’s recipe. Delicious way to end the night!
My parents don’t have the air conditioning on upstairs – wish me luck!!

wowow that first dress is gorgeous!
Thanks, it was mine!
AKA, yours! Really beautiful.
Mmmm I love make your own sandwich bars! Delicious! And the fruit salad looks awesome as well! Love the addition of banana!
i love wedding dresses! and shrimp.
I’m watching the Olympics too! We had ice cream to celebrate
I love watching volleyball, gymnastics and track. I always like watching the random sports that I didn’t really know existed too! Like table tennis; I didn’t know that was a sport.
Your mom’s wedding dress is gorgeous! Looks like something that would be appropriate these days, too. My mom’s dress…not so much ha.
Thanks! That’s not a great picture of it but it was a pretty dress in its day.
I LOVE your dress
Beautiful.
In its day?? I would honestly wear that now. What a beautiful fairy dress. Love the delicate material, too.
i WANT your Mom’s wedding dress. it is absolutely stunning and I can’t believe that something that was in 35 years ago is so in right now as well!! Larbs-it looks great on you-how special would it be to wear your mom’s dress!
I agree! it’s stunning.. wish my mom had been that fashion forward
Yes, I completely agree! I love the sleeves and neckline. And Kath’s dress is gorgeous too!
Thanks everybody. It was an August garden reception in Baltimore, so I was worried about the heat. The style back then was mostly long sleeves. They were often gorgeous sleeves, with buttons and lots of detailing (and usually tightly fitting), but I knew I couldn’t do that in August.
Wow. Your mom had a stunning dress!! Yours is a classic too. Fun night for all.
I was going to say the same thing, it’s beautiful.
beautiful gowns!!!
Your mom’s dress is gorgeous! I feel like parental wedding dresses tend to seem ….dated? now but hers would look perfect in Larbs’ wedding.
You’re sweet. Laura actually thought about wearing it for hers, which pleased me. I think we could have it remade (back is plain) but suspect she’ll want a new one.
Both of those wedding dresses are so beautiful.
I love watching all of the different countries, too. I really enjoyed the whole opening ceremony and watching the years change. Amazing! Oh, and Mr. Bean was my favorite, too.
Larbs looks more like your Mom when she’s wearing her dress–weird how that happens!
(Both dresses are gorgeous.)
I too love your mom’s dress! A little alteration to fit your sister is all it needs and it would be perfect.
Wow your mom’s dress is beautiful! Such a pretty shape.
Aah, no AC! I’d sleep downstairs if it’s too warm.
How fun! She looks beautiful in both of them! Time sure does go fast- 5 years; and I hear it only goes faster
Turn that AC on girl! One weekend with it on won’t hurt!!
Tell my dad… It’s not up to me! Plus their house is historic and it doesn’t cool very well and the overnight low was 69
Glad you ladies arrived safely. Larbs looks lovely in both dresses. She is going to be a beautiful bride. Such exiciting days coming for your family. A new baby and a wedding.,happy events for sure. I hope your baby shower is fun.
Larbs looks beautiful in both dresses! Our AC upstairs broke today too. We are having a sleepover downstairs tonight! This happens once every year…UGH!
Surprisingly I will watch almost anything if it’s Olympics… but any other time I’m not into it.
My ultimately faves are Gymnastics and Swimming. As a kid I dreamed of being a gymnast… got to live my dream when my university offered a class
Also your mom’s dress is really timeless! Totally wearable right now.
I havent even turned my tv on in over 10 days! Honestly, if you didn’t talk about the Olympics, I would not have even known…we have one small tv, and I hardly use it..unless it’s the Bravo channel. Ha! I need to get with the program, literally
i love your mom’s dress! it looks very relevant for today’s style too!
I love watching everything Olympics! My favorite parts of the Opening were Paul McCartney & the Parade of Nations
I love the first dress! Both are quite lovely. How exciting your sister is getting married soon!
I enjoyed the fireworks part of the opening ceremony!
Family time together is always so much fun!
Love your dress on Larbs- she looks lovely!
Are you visiting family again? Is Matt not coming? I haven’t seen any of the Olympics yet – no TV!
That pie looks good! Hope you enjoyed the Olympic ceremony!
Oh wow, I love your Mom’s dress! I wonder what your sister will choose for her own dress! (or will it be her something borrowed!)
Must feel good to be home with your folks. Both dresses look lovely on your sister. Is she thinking of wearing one of them or was this just for fun?
Just for fun
I love a fruit salad heavy on bananas! Have a great time with your family!
I would totally wear your mom’s dress! Gorgeous!
Love your mom’s dress too!
I thought this article summed up my experience as a new mom and I wanted to share it

love the detailing on your mom’s dress – absolutely gorgeous!
Your mom’s dress is gorgeous and timeless. Your sister looks beautiful in it, she should wear it! Imagine if one of your daughters wanted to wear it next….
Both dresses are beautiful! I can’t believe your mom’s dress is 35 years old – it looks so modern!
I do love both your and your mom’s dress! Do you think your mom would share her recipe for that pie??
Your mom’s dress is exactly what I would pick!
We were having the Olympic discussion at work yesterday. I enjoy the gymnastics, the swimming and the men’s beach volleyball
.
Pretty dresses, though your Mom’s is a bit see-through…
She didn’t have on the underslip poof part..
I actually really love your Mom’s dress! Like, enough that I feel like I would maybe have it made to be my dress one day! Haha.
It’s also crazy how much Larbs looks like your mom in that picture where she’s wearing the dress!
Enjoy the time with your family Kath
It’s yours if you want to borrow it! (You can have it remade too, if you want.)
I absolutely love your mom’s dress! I think Larbs should wear it!
Funny reading the comments about Laura looking like Mom in Mom’s dress. I always look at Laura and think she looks like Mom — and never see anything of myself in her. But in Mom’s dress — and it’s not the dress but rather her expression, smile and maybe the tilt of her head — I see myself in her in this rare captured pic.
Your sister looks pretty in both wedding gowns!
I watched a little bit of the performances on the Olympics last night.

You and your sister look so much alike! How many years apart are you?
3!
Hi Kath, your sister looks very pretty in both dresses! Any chance of you sharing the recipe of that yummy looking pie?
I’ve put in a request to the recipe keeper : )
Here’s the pie:
Make or buy graham cracker crust.
Melt 25-30 large marshmallows in 1/2 cup milk in a saucepan over low heat. Cool.
Fold in 1/2 pint heavy cream, whipped, 1/2 tsp vanilla, and one square of bitter chocolate, grated. Save some of the grated chocolate to sprinkle on the top of the pie.
Pour into crust and chill for a few hours. A light easy pie.
Thank you!
Wow Larbs must be tiny if your dress is too big on her!
? It wasn’t laced in the back
Both dresses are beautiful! I think Larbs looks just like you in the photo of her in your Mom’s dress.
Your mother’s dress is gorgeous! Just what I want when I get married
Aw Larbs looks so nice in both dresses!
I was surprised by how much I love watching the Olympics! Gymnastics is so much cooler than I remember it being at age 5
Obviously, I am behind on your blog, but I was just thinking this must have been a little bit of an emotional day for your parents. There you are ready to give them a grandson very soon, and your sister is trying on wedding dresses. I think if I were in their shoes, I would have been a mess. A happy mess, but a mess none the less.
So much for your family to celebrate this year!
Omg. That was ALL I could think about while they were forging that ring. I had the narrators voice from the LOTR movies in my head telling the story of the “one ring to rule them all.”
Your chocolate chip pie and fruit salad look yummy! I love how many different colorful fruits are in the fruit salad. Great idea!
