Lemon Drop

August 30, 2012

I had such a relaxing day – I can’t remember the last time I did so little and didn’t have that “I should be doing X” in the back of my mind.

And my afternoon snack was pie!! How fun is that. The last little piece from last night (that’s an appetizer plate not a dinner plate  )

When Matt got home from the bakery, we freshened up and walked the ~1.5 miles over to Faith and Tate’s house for dinner! They have been crazy busy this summer with lots of trips and adventures, so we were excited to get together for one final double date before we turn into 5!

Loved chillin in their new kitchen!

Faith made the most delicious fried fish to go inside fish tacos. I swear her food always has something magical about it that tastes so fresh. I think it’s her generous use of fresh herbs!

On the side we had a bean + avocado salad and a cucumber and tomato salad – both equally fresh and summery!

Taco assembly!!

For dessert, Matt and I picked up a special treat…

Cappellino’s Crazy Cakes here in town has a really interesting trend going. According to the owners, 124 women (and counting) have gone into labor after eating their Lemon Drop Cupcakes right near their due dates. This is one wives tale (or not!?) that I wanted to participate in, as it’s the eve of my due date! Could it be the dose of sugar? The lemon concentration (acid near the uterus?) The placebo effect? The due date timing? Who knows! The owner told us that some women have near instantly gone into labor when their water breaks on the spot and others took a little longer (24-48 hours), but that there is definitely something about them : )

The cupcake was absolutely delicious and VERY lemony – very zesty!! I loved it – excellent frosting!!

After dinner, we walked back downtown. Sadly, the owner of Bella Boutique, Thom, was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and the salon family and friends put together an event to help raise money for him tonight. We donated a gift basket from Great Harvest and wanted to also stop by and show our support. Although I have never had the pleasure of going to Bella, my friend Seamane has had Thom as her hairdresser for ages. The event was lovely with a huge turnout, and will hopefully help out Thom during this difficult time.

After chatting with some of our friends, we headed back home, covering about 3 miles in all tonight.

The moon sure was FULL!

Best wishes for your labor and delivery! :)

3 Stephanie August 30, 2012 at 9:06 pm

The moon is so bright and beautiful too over here in Florida!

4 Christine August 30, 2012 at 9:07 pm

Have you heard of labor – inducing eggplant parm.? http://www.scalinis.com/Bambino.htm
It might be worth a shot?

5 KathEats August 30, 2012 at 9:08 pm

I have heard of that too! We might make something with eggplant tomorrow : )

6 k August 30, 2012 at 11:20 pm

A few days ago, a fellow commenter and I both posted about having eaten eggplant on the eve of our labor! My water broke less than two hours post dinner that night! It’s silly, but all this speculation is fun indeed!

7 Lee August 31, 2012 at 6:02 am

I was just about to post about that too! I’ve never been, but living in Atlanta, I’ve heard the tales about the eggplant parm.

8 Andrea August 30, 2012 at 9:07 pm

That is CRAZY about those cupcake stats! If you go into labor, I would totally ask what’s in the cupcakes 😉 Happy Full Moon!

9 Leigh August 30, 2012 at 9:08 pm

Aha! You’re going to have the baby on my birthday (the 31st!). And I turned out OK, so should work out the same for your baby. Best wishes!

10 betht August 30, 2012 at 9:08 pm

I went into labor on a full moon night….good luck!

11 Holly B August 30, 2012 at 9:08 pm

Kath- I think you’re still looking so great for almost 40 weeks. Your face has a “knowing” look that is 1 part happy mom and 1 part excited mom (but I don’t see a nervous mom at all)! I’m thinking you go into labor Friday night! Good luck!!

12 Amy in Canada August 30, 2012 at 9:09 pm

How cool is it to have so many people excitedly waiting for your baby’s arrival! I am certainly one of them!! Checking KERF extra often!

13 Janet August 30, 2012 at 9:10 pm

Fingers crossed the Lemon Drop Cupcake and Full Moon combination will work for you.

14 Sana August 30, 2012 at 9:10 pm

What do those cupcakes have in them???????

15 Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries August 30, 2012 at 9:11 pm

16 Mom August 30, 2012 at 9:12 pm

Those cupcakes look divine. I sure hope they work….

17 Monica August 30, 2012 at 9:15 pm

That is too funny about the cupcakes and super exciting! Sending lots of good vibes your way! :)

18 Laura August 30, 2012 at 9:18 pm

I feel like you are SUCH a planner and beyond organized that OF COURSE your babe is going to
Come riiiight when he’s due. So punctual, just like his mama! Best of luck to you! How fun if you could add to the lemon cupcake tradition!

19 Silvia @ skinny jeans food August 30, 2012 at 9:19 pm

Good luck with the “lemon drop”!

Maybe, you will go into labor on Labor Day after all 😉

20 Katie @ Talk Less, Say More August 30, 2012 at 9:26 pm

Oooh fingers crossed the lemon drop cupcake works! Regardless though, it sounds delicious!

21 [email protected] August 30, 2012 at 9:26 pm

I was just thinking last night that you hadn’t gotten together with Faith recently! Her food IS amazing :)

22 Betsy August 30, 2012 at 9:26 pm

I’m with you, “Amy in Canada”, can’t wait for baby baker! Those lemon drop cupcakes have me puckering from miles away, they look awfully tasty. You are glowing as ever Kath. Best of luck with the labor-inducing sweet treat!

23 Pam August 30, 2012 at 9:27 pm

I hope the lemon drop cupcake works for you too!!
Wow Faith is a great cook, her food does look incredibly fresh.
That’s so thoughtful of you to give a basket for Thom’s fundraiser and stop by.
Very excited for your big day to come and hopefully very soon a lemon drop induced labor :)

24 Angel7 August 30, 2012 at 9:31 pm

Those are some AMAZING cupcakes if they will actually make you go into labor :) They must have some secret magical ingredient :)

25 Katie @ Peace Love & Oats August 30, 2012 at 9:42 pm

Ahhhh I hope that lemon drop cup cake works!!!

26 Kelly Ann August 30, 2012 at 9:54 pm

I joke them every time I get a lemon cupcake about that labor deal…for me it would be a miracle and she just laughs ever time saying..you never know. I’m 51 I’m pretty sure..
Good luck tonight…

27 Rosie @ rosalicious August 30, 2012 at 9:59 pm

Regarding the eggplant parm: someone at Bend said people swear by the eggplant parm at Tip Top on Pantops for inducing labor!

Also, my friend had the cupcake and went into labor the next day…it does happen :)

28 KathEats August 31, 2012 at 6:23 am

Maybe ill make eggplant for lunch!?

29 Mom August 31, 2012 at 7:56 am

What about for breakfast?

30 KathEats August 31, 2012 at 8:28 am

31 Mom August 31, 2012 at 9:41 am

In a smoothie with a banana!

32 Laura (Blogging Over Thyme) August 30, 2012 at 9:59 pm

Wow! That’s nuts about the cupcakes. I was born right on my due date, so here’s hoping your boy does the same!!

33 j3nn August 30, 2012 at 10:08 pm

That’s a neat coincidence about the cupcakes! Maybe you will be 125… or 126 might be better for you? :)

34 KathEats August 31, 2012 at 6:23 am

35 Seamane August 30, 2012 at 10:14 pm

Thank you guys so much for coming by the auction and for donating the gift basket. It was good to see you two and chat for a bit, and I can’t say enough how much I appreciate your contributing to help my friend. I hope the lemon drop works out for you the way you want it to!

36 KathEats August 31, 2012 at 6:24 am

:) xo

37 Mandy August 30, 2012 at 10:32 pm

The women in my family have had tremendous birthing success with lemon meringue pie! I think these (and the blue moon) should do the trick. It’s like Christmas anticipating this event!

38 Kelsey August 30, 2012 at 10:50 pm

that is so funny about the cup cakes!

39 nicole August 30, 2012 at 11:06 pm

Come on baby! !!! I just had my baby today but I would so eat that cupcake. It looks so good.

40 KathEats August 31, 2012 at 6:23 am

Wow Congrats!!

41 Alaine at My GF & DF Living August 30, 2012 at 11:15 pm

Sounds like a great day! I hope your lemon drop cupcake works because that certainly sounds super delicious!

42 Lauren August 30, 2012 at 11:16 pm

I hope this cupcake helps you progress happily, healthfully and comfortably. Here in Los Angeles we have a place called Caiote Cafe and they have a labor inducing salad. I think it’s similar to the labor inducing eggplant parm in that it has tons of oregano. But I think it works like raspberry leaf to prime but not induce.
Happy hopefully birthday 😉

43 k August 30, 2012 at 11:29 pm

Oh! I just noticed the number on the Lemon Drop induced baby board! The idea of you and your organized little baby Kerf being a nice round 125 was a fleeting thought. However, I’m sure you would be even thrilled if another cupcake loving duo beat you to the punch on this one and your delivery ended up being their 126th! :)

44 KathEats August 31, 2012 at 6:21 am

Haha #126 would be sweeet!

45 Kristin k August 30, 2012 at 11:32 pm

Good luck! Those cupcakes would be worth it either way…yum! And I love the pie snack! Gotta live it up while you’re preggers! Also, organized mom=organized baby so maybe he will be right on time?! My daughter was born right in the middle of the day of her due date…and is very organized like her mom 😉

46 Khushboo August 30, 2012 at 11:54 pm

And to this– this might possibly be your last post as a pregnant lady (at least with baby #1)…fingers crossed!!

47 Tina August 30, 2012 at 11:59 pm

I’m just waiting for the moment I won’t find a new blog entry in my google reader – to know you went into labour!
So sure it will be happen today! Full moon, lemon cupcakes -rasberry tea ..fingers crossed for today!

48 Brooke @ Pretty In Protein August 31, 2012 at 12:06 am

Those tacos look so good! Along with everything else you eat. Tomorrow is definitely taco night!

49 Averie @ Averie Cooks August 31, 2012 at 12:35 am

Here’s to hoping lemon cupcakes work like a charm…better than castor oil, just a little bit :)

And Faith’s food DOES look delish!

50 JessicaE August 31, 2012 at 12:48 am

My son was born on his due date… hope yours is too :) only 12 percent of babies are!

51 Michelle (Peachy Palate) August 31, 2012 at 1:04 am

Here’s hoping the cupcake works it’s magic for you!

52 Sandy August 31, 2012 at 4:44 am

That lemon cupcake looks so yummy and if it doesn’t work today, I would have another one every day until it does! I’m betting you go into labor on with the full moon – just hope they have a room for you as everyone else will go into labor too! I love a first of the month birthday so I’m hoping for a 9/1 birth. Good luck.

53 robin August 31, 2012 at 5:55 am

56 Hope @ With A Side Of Hope August 31, 2012 at 6:30 am

I hope the cupcake works for you! I love learning about old wives tales like that. :) The moon did look beautiful. I’m excited to see the blue moon tonight.

57 Karen August 31, 2012 at 6:39 am

Happy Birthday, little one…you have so many friends all over the globe eagerly waiting for your arrival today – plus your mommy and daddy have your nursery all stocked and ready, schedules are cleared…

58 kristen @ verbs and vignettes August 31, 2012 at 6:59 am

those cupcakes look DELICIOUS! i’d venture to say it’s a self-fulfilling prophesy now… you’re so close, and have also eaten a cupcake. :p like… if you eat a cookie, and then fall asleep. whatever works at this point, though.

59 Amanda @flecksofgreen August 31, 2012 at 8:23 am

You just look absolutely glowing! I’m very excited for you to become a family of 3! And that piece of pie makes me want pie so badly–and it’s 9:22am!

60 Jennifer August 31, 2012 at 8:51 am

Was the fish fried stove top with cracker meal? Looks like it to me! And what kind of fish?

61 KathEats August 31, 2012 at 8:51 am

I’m not sure

62 Jennifer August 31, 2012 at 8:55 am

Either way it looks delish! Happy due date!

63 Faith August 31, 2012 at 10:35 am

Hi Jennifer, the crust was white cornmeal with smoked salt and some fresh oregano and it was pan fried in a mix of coconut oil and olive oil.

64 Ana August 31, 2012 at 3:01 pm

Thanks for letting us know about how you made the fish, I was going to ask about it too as it looks delicious!!
And Kath, good luck with the baby and happy “blogversary”!

65 Carol August 31, 2012 at 10:00 am

Both my labors started on Friday evenings. Wishing you a happy Friday!

66 Spice Chicken August 31, 2012 at 11:56 am
