Layer Cake

March 18, 2011

Well rested and ready to play!

Mom and I had on similar dresses

IMG_4470 IMG_4474

Three layers of cake lovers (plus Smotey) Larbs arrived by airplane in the middle of cake eating dessert! Four layers of family.

We met a few of Gram’s friends for cocktails at the bistro (pronounced “bis-tro” not “bees-tro”!)

Manhattan for me (!!)

Whiskey Sour for Gram

And bar snacks for us all!

After some nice conversation, we moseyed over to the grill for dinner. I love eating in the grill because it’s a big buffet (a service offered to the residents of Gram’s building). I like to build my meal to taste!

I always start with a big salad –

Topped with romaine, veggies, fruit, bleu cheese and cranberries

I didn’t plan on having wine with dinner, but I ended up sharing a glass with mom –

Off the hot buffet, I chose a fish (I’m not sure what kind) and lots of veggies

I shared my fish with Matt because one of Gram’s friends found me a really good trout that was hiding behind the counter! A Steelhead trout, I believe? It was great! Like salmon!

Guess who is turning 29 again on Sunday!? MOM!!!

Happy Birthday To You!

Like a good girl, I ate all of my icing. But I left most of the cake part because cake is just a means to serve icing anyways.

Side of decaf!

After dinner we went up to Gram’s apartment and looked at old photos. This one we think was taking in 1875! That’s Gram’s Gram on the far left!

And her family in their bathing suits, many ages ago –

Matt and I are back at our hotel getting some rest before a fun day of shopping, bread eating and parties tomorrow! Wheee!

I love the blue dress! and Happy “29th” birthday to your mom, haha 😉

I love looking at old family photos, it’s so interesting to see what they wore and how they acted back then. You ever notice how in the black in white pics (like you have), people never smile?! They look so serious!

Anyway, have fun tomorrow! :)

2 Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife March 18, 2011 at 9:16 pm

mmmm we had cake tonight too :) Mine had a side of ice cream:
And I can’t wait to see more of your adventures!! Love those pics of your grandma…

3 Marie@feedingfive March 18, 2011 at 9:20 pm

Those photos are spectacular. It so motivates me to organize and properly store my own photos. I can always pass on cake, but if there is warm cobbler with ice cream, or bread pudding, then dessert it is!

4 Kiran @ March 18, 2011 at 9:21 pm

Happy 29th to your mom 😉 And that looks like an amazing gathering, foods and fun. I love walking down the memory lane browsing photos from yesteryear :)

5 Lesley Lifting Life March 18, 2011 at 9:21 pm

How fun! :)

Happy Birthday to your mom!!

6 Allie (Live Laugh Eat) March 18, 2011 at 9:28 pm

They had cameras back then?!?! I found some ancient photos of my dad’s fam when I went to HK…so fun to look through!

7 Kelsey March 18, 2011 at 9:28 pm

i love your blue dress and boots! as an FIT grad i must insist you belt that baby next time to show off your tiny waist. also, i must insist you share the secret to not eating the cake when it is right in front of you.

“Like a good girl, I ate all of my icing. But I left most of the cake part because cake is just a means to serve icing anyways.”

…I said just about the same thing the other day at work! We bought a cake for a coworker’s going away and I ate all the icing off my piece, a tiny bite of cake and handed over the rest of the “cake” to someone else. All my friends told me there was something wrong with me. I’m pretty sure they just don’t get it. 😉

Your family is so adorable!

I finally had my first Manhatten a few weeks ago and I absolutely loved it!

13 Cindy March 18, 2011 at 9:40 pm

I love buffets too! I get to eat lots of different tastes of things instead of just one.

14 Donna March 18, 2011 at 9:44 pm

Love steelhead trout. It is amazingly similar to salmon at a better price.

15 Hannah March 18, 2011 at 9:44 pm

I’ve never heard of a whiskey sour before, but it sure looks purrrty!

16 Ann @ Day by Day March 18, 2011 at 9:44 pm

I love really old family photos! My grandfather has one of five of his siblings in Mississippi on the front porch of their home. They’re all wearing the sweetest white outfits and the girls have big bows in their hair. It’s my favorite picture. Have fun tomorrow! It sounds like a great day.

17 Ellie@fitforthesoul March 18, 2011 at 10:05 pm

hehehe! you really ARE dressed like twinsies!! that’s cool~and i like your dresses, very pretty and simple :)

18 Kristy @ KristyRuns March 18, 2011 at 10:11 pm

Looks like a fabulous evening! Icing is definitely the best part of a cake. :) P.S. Those old-time bathing suits are hilarious!

19 aimee March 18, 2011 at 10:11 pm

It’s nice that your family’s history is so well preserved. It’s a treasure to have that much information and such cool photos.

20 Hilary March 18, 2011 at 10:22 pm

Yay for family and cake! :) And what cool pics!

21 Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) March 18, 2011 at 10:43 pm

“because cake is just a means to serve icing anyways. “– I totally concur! I do love moist, perfect cake. But most cake is way too dry for me.

Whiskey sours and bar nuts…YUM!

And time with your Gram and fam…awesome :)

22 Khushboo March 18, 2011 at 11:50 pm

We’d make a great team…I always scrape of the cream and just eat the cake part!

23 Morgan @ moments of mmm March 18, 2011 at 11:51 pm

I love the swimming suits in the second picture.. :)

Happy Birthday to your Mom!

24 Emma (Namaste Everyday) March 18, 2011 at 11:52 pm

this made me miss my family :) Sometimes I skip salad so that I can focus all my eating energy on the main course, but that’s a great idea if I want to go out, but keep it light! plus, I can save half of my meal for lunch the next day!

25 Erin @Shortcut to Bliss March 19, 2011 at 12:23 am

You are so lucky to still have your grandmother alive. You have such a lovely family to share your life with. It is really touching and beautiful.

26 Hannah @ Healthy Whip March 19, 2011 at 2:36 am

Wow what great old photos! I love looking back like that!

27 Laura (Starloz) March 19, 2011 at 4:32 am

those old pictures ARE incredible.

28 Cara Craves... March 19, 2011 at 4:56 am

You and your Mom and a beautiful pair!

29 CathyK @ March 19, 2011 at 5:06 am

totally agree: cake is just a socially acceptable way of serving up icing.
kath, i totally appreciate the love of family that you show on your blog – i think it’s wonderful that both you and matt make family such a high priority in your lives. thanks for sharing about your evening!

30 Lauren at Keep It Sweet March 19, 2011 at 5:52 am

Happy Birthday to your mom!

31 Sarah (Running To Slow Things Down) March 19, 2011 at 6:06 am

Haha…love the bathing suit photo. It’s so fun looking at photos from way back and seeing how much time has changed. 😀

I agree wholeheartedly with your thoughts on cake and icing. The icing is definitely the way to go. 😀

32 Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope March 19, 2011 at 6:14 am

You and your mom are adorable in those dresses! What a great family dinner… Happy early birthday to your mom and I totally agree on the cake. I was never a big cake fan myself, so my mom used to make ice cream cake for my birthday or lemon meringue sponge cake when I was younger!

33 AJ @ Flowing to Fifty March 19, 2011 at 6:40 am

What a lovely celebration! You are blessed to have those lovely photos – definitely a great family legacy.

34 Katie @ NaturaStride March 19, 2011 at 6:40 am

Kath! I totally do the same thing with cake – I scrape off all the delicious frosting, and leave all the cake on my plate. And then I get strange looks from everyone. Its nice to know there’s others out there who are frosting-only lovers!
Have a nice weekend!

35 Simply Life March 19, 2011 at 6:49 am

what a fun dinner!

36 J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) March 19, 2011 at 6:54 am

That blue dress looks great on you! You look so young in the pics with your mom.

Happy birthday to your mom!! My mom just turned 25 last month! Amazing how young our moms are! 😉

37 Haleigh March 19, 2011 at 7:00 am

I love looking through my grandma’s old photos. It makes me wonder what life will be like when I am her age. You look beautiful, Kath! It looks like you had a fantastic evening with your family.

38 Melissa March 19, 2011 at 7:16 am

Glad we agree on the cake/icing issue! Looks like you had a wonderful evening and another great day in store for today! Having so much fun reading about your trip! :)

39 Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat March 19, 2011 at 7:38 am

Haha I love your cake comment – SO true about the icing! The fish you had looks great – that’s usually what I choose entree-wise on buffets as well. Sounds like a fun night!

40 Stephanie @ Walking my Talk March 19, 2011 at 8:03 am

I love old family photos! What a treasure!

41 Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin March 19, 2011 at 8:05 am

43 Parita @ myinnershakti March 19, 2011 at 9:00 am

The first time through your post I read, “That’s my gram on the far left.” I thought, “Wow, her gram ages really well.” But then I re-read and saw “Gram’s Gram.” LOL! Glad you had a great time with your family! :)

44 Heather @ Get Healthy With Heather March 19, 2011 at 9:41 am

What a nice get together! You and your mom look so alike. All 3 of you layers are too cute together.

45 Amanda March 19, 2011 at 9:44 am

Icing is definitely the best part! I completely agree! :) And it looks like such a fun time! I love your dress!

46 Rae March 19, 2011 at 10:38 am

LOL-love your philosophy on icing-its mine, too :-) one year I asked for an icing cake for my birthday….too bad no one else was enthused. Have a great weekend!

47 s March 19, 2011 at 5:14 pm

HAHA! HBD KERFmom! my mom celebrates her 29th birthday yearly too :)

48 Jennifer March 19, 2011 at 7:12 pm

Wow! I can’t believe you posted such a risque photo of them in their swimming attire! 😉
Seriously though, the photos are wonderful. Also, your mom looks fabulous for 29!

49 Allison @ Happy Tales March 20, 2011 at 4:37 pm

My goodness, my family has old pictures from years ago as well, and i just LOVE looking at them! And yes, I completely agree…icing is always the best part of the cake!

PS. Your mom is GORGEOUS! So vibrant…
