Lax, And I Don’t Mean Lacrosse

August 1, 2010

Or LA’s Airport!

Hey friends!

Today was such a lax day. I read on the couch for hours. I must get to work tomorrow!! I have writing to do, presentations for the Summit to plan, Summit stuff to follow up with, calls to make, letters to write!

Afternoon snack.

It’s good. But not blow-your-mind-cookie-dough good. I think the PB chip was better. Still top 5 flavors though!

I didn’t really like the first bite, but by the end I was sold. The chocolate takes a while to develop!

IMG_8806 (640x427)

I finally organized the spices

IMG_8829 (640x427)

And put them into matching containers. Part of a set from my OpenSky shop [currently not showing up!?]. We were going to hang the cool magnetic rack but since this rack was already built into the door, we decided not to take up more space. I’m definitely one to love matching!

Tonight was a wine night. It just went well with the ambiance.

Study the color.

Don’t run with Scissors!

IMG_8807 (640x427)

I sipped a small glass while cooking..

IMG_8828 (640x427)

Matt’s friend Dallas came over for dinner on his last night as a Cville resident :(

IMG_8847 (640x427)

We made local grass-fed beef burgers on the grill with homemade bread buns, heirloom tomatoes, avocado and lots of fresh local veggies: okra + kale chips

IMG_8838 (640x427)

IMG_8839 (640x427)

IMG_8843 (640x427)

I ate 3/4 and gave the rest to Matt. Had no trouble with my veggies though 😉

Fun relaxing day at home. Just a few days till I’m in the Big Apple + the Windy City!

you have so many spices and I’m sure you use them!

2 Mandy A August 1, 2010 at 8:50 pm

I am dying to find the new larabar flavors! I haven’t been able to make it to whole foods yet and haven’t seen them at my regular grocery stores :(

3 Marie August 1, 2010 at 8:52 pm

I’ve been looking all over for good spice jars, where did you find yours? Love them! My spices are currently driving me crazy :)

4 Kath August 2, 2010 at 8:15 am

They’re from my OpenSky store – but they weren’t showing up last night. I’m trying to fix it.

5 Jenn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) August 1, 2010 at 9:07 pm

It’s good to relax now and then! Your dinner looks yummy, love the homemade buns. Yum! :)

6 Amanda (The Nutritionist Reviews) August 1, 2010 at 9:08 pm

Today when I went grocery shopping you inspired me to buy okra! Now I just need to think of how I want to use it!

7 Samantha August 1, 2010 at 9:11 pm

Do you eat all of the okra? Do you eat the ends and all? I’m still scared!

8 Kath August 2, 2010 at 8:18 am

I do. I didn’t used to, but you can.

9 Stacey@ August 1, 2010 at 9:14 pm

Nice buns, hamburger buns that is. Looks like they turned out really good. :)

10 Wei-Wei August 1, 2010 at 9:15 pm

11 Katie August 1, 2010 at 9:16 pm

13 coco August 1, 2010 at 9:19 pm

great spicy stand… I wish I had one to have them organized 😉

14 Kate August 1, 2010 at 9:25 pm

I adore that spice rack…I struggle with organizing my spices so that I can easily see everything!

15 Mary @ Bites and Bliss August 1, 2010 at 9:36 pm

Relaxing is exactly what Sundays are for. :)

16 Meg August 1, 2010 at 9:37 pm

I JUST bought a big thang o’ kale today! My inspiration? YOU! I cannot wait to make kale chips! Yahooo!!

Hooray for ‘laxin Sundays!

19 Courtney (Delightful Devours) August 1, 2010 at 9:50 pm

Hey we had practically the same dinner tonight!

20 Casey August 1, 2010 at 9:53 pm

Kale + Okra = YUMMMM!!!

21 Hannah August 1, 2010 at 10:10 pm

Eeep! I’m planning to doa bloggie swap with a friend in America, and didn’t realise there were so many new larabars out there. Which ones would you recommend for someone who can’t access them in her own country? :)

22 Kath August 2, 2010 at 8:20 am

PB Cup
PB Cookie
Pecan Pie
Cashew Cookie
Banana Bread
Cookie Dough

are my favorites. I don’t care for the fruity ones.

23 Lele August 1, 2010 at 10:15 pm

I love alphabetizing my spices. It makes me really happy. I don’t have matching jars, though, you are in a class all your own!

I just discovered grilled okra this summer and wow it is amazing. Although mine is definitely more charred than yours- often not on purpose! I have to say, though, it tastes really good when it is BLACKENED. At least I think so 😀

24 Nancy @ The Wife of a Dairyman August 1, 2010 at 10:15 pm

Great home made buns! Turned out good! You are the organizing Queen :)
Have a great evening!

25 Kerri @ Kerri Turns into a Zombie August 1, 2010 at 10:20 pm

Sounds like a funday sunday. :)

26 Chelsea (Chelsea's Chew and Run Fun) August 1, 2010 at 10:25 pm

After all the hustle and bustle with your recent move, I think a relaxing afternoon reading was well deserved. I’m dying to try those new Lara Bar flavors, I’m just waiting for them to start distributing them more widely to various grocers.

Those homemade buns look like they came in handy for your delicious dinner. I’m always impressed at how you fill up half your plate with veggies.

27 anne August 1, 2010 at 10:35 pm

Mmm, that wine sounds good. I’ll have to check it out!

Random question: do you mind if I ask what kind of watch you have? and whether you like/dislike it? I’m in the market for a new watch, and yours caught my eye…

28 Kath August 2, 2010 at 8:21 am

I have a Kenneth Cole that my dad got me on a cruise ship in …1999?! I love it though

29 Rhea (Greek Feaster) August 1, 2010 at 10:37 pm

Haha, I love the visual journey of the wine-tasting, especially the swirling action shot!

30 eatmovelov August 1, 2010 at 10:39 pm

Never seen or heard of that flavor! Wow.

What book is it that you reading??

31 Liz @ Tip Top Shape August 1, 2010 at 10:46 pm

Is it weird that I am lusting after your spice rack??? lol

Sounds like you had a nice, relaxing day 😀

32 Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter August 1, 2010 at 11:22 pm

I have SO many spices! It’s pretty embaressing…but maybe it just shows the culinary genius in me?! lol

33 Camille August 2, 2010 at 12:23 am

I love the spice organization! It looks very nice!

34 lynn (The Actors Diet) August 2, 2010 at 12:51 am

when i moved from nyc i gave away my spice rack – SO STUPID!!!

(i thought you meant los angeles intl airport at first and got excited that you were coming to town!)

35 Ursula August 2, 2010 at 1:09 am

Loving the Cambridge top!

36 Kath August 2, 2010 at 8:21 am

Yay – glad someone recognized it!

37 Freya @ Brit Chick Runs August 2, 2010 at 1:46 am

Ooh why are you going to NYC?
Haha, if you’re not sure about the Larabar, send any spares my way – I’d gladly eat them 😛

38 Kath August 2, 2010 at 8:22 am

For BlogHer of course

39 Stacey @ Tipping the (Kitchen!) Scales August 2, 2010 at 3:01 am

Sometimes you just need a day of doing nothing to recharge your batteries!!

The Larabar looks tasty.

40 Sara August 2, 2010 at 3:49 am

hey kath,
have you ever tried balance bars? they have a really good cookie dough flavor. i also like them because they have about 3x as much protein as larabars for the same # of calories.

also — holy okra! i’m a born and bred new englander who had never tried okra (i just never thought about it), but i’m overseas for the summer and saw it in the farmers market when you did your roasted okra post. i’m a convert!!! delicious!!! i will definitely be eating this overlooked veggie from now on —

41 Kath August 2, 2010 at 8:23 am

I don’t care for the ingredient list on Balance bars at ALL. Full of artificial things.

42 Jessica @ How Sweet It Is August 2, 2010 at 6:30 am

I didn’t like the PB chip larabar! I thought it tasted rancid. I loved the cookie dough – it is the only lara I have liked so far!

43 Ni August 2, 2010 at 6:32 am

Hey Kath,
What are you going to be doing in my Windy City?
I look forward to your blog everyday! Thanks for all the great food inspiration! Also, I’m in the prerequisites stage of preparing to go for a Master’s in nutrition so I’ve loved reading about your journey!

44 Kath August 2, 2010 at 8:24 am

The SUMMIT of course!

45 Casey @ Insatiably Healthy August 2, 2010 at 7:04 am

I wish I could’ve tracked down the new larabar flavors. I miss them greatly.
Love the wine tasting pictures! Too cute.

46 Heather (Heather's Dish) August 2, 2010 at 7:19 am

i just have to say i love the way you dress! your outfit in this post is so casual but gorgeous…and i LOVE that green necklace. where did you get it?

47 Kath August 2, 2010 at 8:24 am

Aw thanks

48 Heather August 2, 2010 at 7:22 am

This is totally unrelated but I noticed Melissa from Melissa’s Journey is on your blogroll. Do you (or anyone else) know why she stopped blogging?

49 Kath August 2, 2010 at 8:28 am

No idea :(

50 Heather August 2, 2010 at 7:23 am

Hello~ yummy lara bar I wish I could find them.

When you roast your veggies going back to Sat night do you use the Garlic Gold Oil or the nuggets? I wanted to order some from your Oken Sky but wanted to get the right thing you were using all of the time.

Thank you!

51 Kath August 2, 2010 at 8:30 am

The oil!! The nuggets are really fun too, but the oil is where it’s at

52 Holly @ couchpotatoathlete August 2, 2010 at 8:17 am

Those spice jars are adorable! I would love for all of mine to match, I’ll have to keep checking your shop to get some!

53 Evan Thomas August 2, 2010 at 8:25 am

I still can’t find those bars, but I’m all excited to try the chocolate flavors whenever I can.

54 wishful nals August 2, 2010 at 8:34 am

sounds like such a wonderful day! kath, i’d love to meet you at blogher! :)

55 Tracy August 2, 2010 at 10:09 am

When you make okra fries, do you roast them? What temp? Do you OIL them first?

56 Kath August 2, 2010 at 10:18 am

Yes. 400*. Yes.

57 Callie August 2, 2010 at 10:27 am

I’m searching everywhere for those Larabars! :)
Sounds like you had a good day.

58 Esse August 2, 2010 at 10:33 am

Hi Kath – I hope you enjoy some good eats in the Windy City. Have you been to a Trader Joe’s store yet? There are quite a few in and around town. I get my Larabars from them and a ton of fun, healthy snacks. Right now I’m addicted to their Super-Seeded Tortilla Chips with Flax, Chia and Hemp seeds. Have a good time!

59 Christina August 2, 2010 at 10:39 am

I totally agree with you – I didn’t like that larabar at first but then…YUM! Your dinner looks amazing!!

60 Amanda @ Cakes and Ale August 2, 2010 at 1:06 pm

My boss – a Southerner – recently got me hooked on okra. My new favorite way to eat it is to toss it with olive oil, garlic salt, and pepper, then grill it til its almost charred, then squeeze lemon all over. Sometimes I also mix up some greek yog and lemon and dill and dip em in it!

61 Franziska (justalittlechocolate) August 2, 2010 at 1:38 pm

I love larabars – have not tried the cookie dough flavor. I pretty much always get the cherry pie; I guess I should branch out! Also, I really need to try kale chips :)

62 BroccoliHut August 2, 2010 at 3:28 pm

Amazing spice rack set-up! I must have matching items too–I actually went to World Market last year to buy empty spice bottles so that everything would coordinate:)

63 Ashley @ Nourishing the Soul August 2, 2010 at 5:03 pm

I’ve still not tried Larabars yet. What’s the best flavor for a lara-virgin?

64 Kath August 2, 2010 at 7:06 pm

PB Cookie!

65 Mastering Public Health (@MasPublicHealth) August 2, 2010 at 7:30 pm

Hey, I love the idea of neat matching containers for spices. But it just occurred to me that if I do that, the “dates” will be gone. Do you ever think about the “expiration” (more like “best by”) dates on herb and spice containers? Replace them after a certain point? Just wondering!

66 Kath August 2, 2010 at 7:36 pm

Hmmm I actually did not think of that!! But I don’t really look at them anyways… I go by the smell test
