A momentous day!! I got to hear my baby’s heartbeat !!
I went for a walk midmorning while running errands. I love doing this – so efficient! I’m going on another shorter walk this afternoon. My goal is an hour of activity everyday. M/W/F is the gym and the rest of the week I do what I feel like doing. These days I’m loving going on long walks.
Here is me having a mini meal – a half cup of yogurt with blueberries and jam – after my walk. Should be a good mix of protein and carbs. [GO DUKE!]
When I went for my first prenatal appointment 2 weeks ago, I asked my doctor his opinion on when I should break the news to the blog world. Wait a few more weeks, after the 12 week ultrasound? I also told him I was dying to share the news. His suggestion was to come back 2 weeks later [today] and listen for a heartbeat through the Doppler. I ended up deciding to tell you all a few days earlier, but hearing the heartbeat was still reassuring for me to move forward with the baby blog.
Listening to that sound – gosh it was priceless. The most emotional moment yet. But I’ll save all the lovey dovey talk for this week’s post on BERF : )
Upon arriving back home, I made a quick quesadilla for lunch with some tortillas I bought at Whole Foods and leftover bean dip from the super bowl (still not gone!)
Also mashed inside was a nice sprinkling of sharp cheddar.
With Whole Foods Chipotle salsa (one of the only store bought salsas I have EVER liked thanks to minimal onion chunks) and a big pile of greek yogurt for dipping (and more protein!)
Grapes on the side! [Said to the tune of ‘pants on the ground’]
And Honest Tea to drink.
Im’ definitely feeling a bit better today with a better appetite for savory foods. Planning a snack around 3:30, a walk with Faith, a bakery bizness call and a spud-filled dinner with Hilary and LOST Season III!

<3 What a special time for y'all!
hearing the heartbeat is the best part of each appointment. now let the old wives tale guessing games begin based on what the HR was!
It was in the 160s (and was 166 at my 7.5 week US).
But she told me right during the appointment today that there isn’t a correlation!
Can’t wait for BERF.
You haven’t listed the link to BERF yet, right?!
Right. Two more weeks.
[But I'm writing post entries nearly daily]
Aww, baby heartbeats!! Can’t wait to see the babylog!
So Exciting! My sister is pregnant for her first time and just heard the heartbeat two days ago, and said it was amazing too
I’m already loving the pictures of her sonogram, and I keep looking at them. I can’t believe I have to wait so long for her baby to get here! Glad to see you’re feeling a little bit better
How exciting! I am going to see my midwife for the first time on Monday – 9 weeks and counting!
I can’t wait till you reveal BERF… at 14 weeks?
aww how adorable!! I am looking forward to the new blog!
such an exciting time for you! my friends are all preggers right now; one has a celebrity gyno (dr. lisa from the doctor’s!)
the tortillas look great but the feeling of hearing your child’s heartbeat for the first time is truly monumental!! ConGRATS!!!! That’s so awesome for you!
I cannot even imagine how exciting that moment must be. So glad it went well!
A little late, but wanted to say congratulations to you & matt!!! I couldnt seem to comment from my Kerf app on my cell
but anyways…an avid reader of your blog for years & years …so excited for you both on the new addition to your family & looking forward to hearing all about this new journey for you !
Hehe I was wondering what the new blog was going to be called – love it! Congrats on the appointment. That’s so exciting!
Well it’s called Baby KERF but BERF is a fun nickname. Like BIRTH not BARF!
Like Baby Eats Real Food! Very sweet.
HAHA BERF! I just got it..like Berfday
awww how amazing it must’ve been to see your baby’s heartbeat! on your new “BERF” blog (creative name by the way
), will you be going into more detail about when and how you found out you were pregnant and all that jazz? i just love hearing about those stories!
Yep!! All the details from day 1
I admire your organization, drive and business sense. You’ll be a great mom.
Yay, that’s so exciting that you got to hear the baby’s heartbeat! I can’t wait to read BERF
BERF! i love it. so happy to hear the heartbeat was strong!!
Congrstulations, again – how exciting!
How awesome Kath! I hope your appointment went well!
LOL -> [Said to the tune of ‘pants on the ground’] I love it! Congrats on hearing the heartbeat. That must have been amazing!!
Seriously Kath, since you broke the news you’ve given me a bit of baby fever. And that says a lot because I’m one of those people who will never be completely “ready” to plunge into the world of parenthood. I am so delighted for you, and who knows, following your journey may help me take that leap of faith that I know I ultimately want! Best of luck to you and Matt!
That’s so awesome! I have a heartbeat monitor to use at home too, it’s so fun to listen at night and find out where the little baby is hiding. I highly recommend it. It is peace of mind and so fun to hear over and over again. (You can also record it and save it to your computer too!)
Where did you get yours? I wouldn’t know what would be a good one to buy.
I’ve heard the Sonoline B or something like that is good. I’ve seen them on Ebay
Beyond exciting!!
Enjoy Lost Season Three! It’s so good. The entire show! But S3 is quite neat!
I am having a procedure tomorrow to see why we dont have a little one on the way tomorrow and am super nervous- reading your blog, especially today, put a big smile on my face and made me realize its all worth it! Cant wait to experience what you guys just did!!!! Congrats!
sorry for the redundant “tomorrow”s
Good luck <3
Season 3 of LOST was my favorite!! Enjoy
Kath, when you buy dairy (milk, yogurt, cheese) do you buy full fat? I never buy lo-fat because I usually don’t like the taste, but sometimes 1% milk and lo-fat greek yogurt. I suppose you lose the protein value with the lower fat?
I buy low-fat mostly. Full fat on occasion and fat free only for Oikos.
I should have said I don’t like the taste usually of No-fat. Thanks for the comment!
Just to add, you don’t lose the protein value with a lower fat version — just look at milk at the store sometime (whole milk, 2%, and skim all have the same amount of protein, just different amount of fat). Hope that helps.
What a beautiful sound to hear! I’m so happy for the two of you! This will be the most exciting time of your lives
The heartbeat is the first fun thing… Next up will be the gender! Are you guys going to find out? Please tell me yes!
Yes
Yay!
It IS so very priceless!!
And even at 36 weeks pregnant I still get emotional when I hear it!
That quesadilla looks so delicious!
Crazy how fast a baby’s heart beat is. yay! And the quesadilla looks fantastic!
Kath- I love reading your blog, it’s such an inspiration for quick, healthy delicious meals! I’m embarrassed to admit how often I print out your recipes. So I was hoping you would have some recommendations about your all-time favorite kitchen tools. I’m getting married and am in the process of putting together my registry and would love to hear what tools you find yourself using over and over (haha the rice cooker obviously!) and if there are any that you thought would be useful that just sit on a shelf. Thanks!
And CONGRATULATIONS on the pregnancy! So exciting!!
I think she recently did this about a week ago? I’ll see if I can find it for you if someone else doesn’t first!
http://www.katheats.com/would-you-buy-another (She has some kitchen recs on there)
Thank you!!
Thanks Stephanie!!
Other smaller things: OXO salad spinner, some good nonstick pans (found some cheap Calphlon ones at BBB recently), rice cooker is now on my list!!, an olive oil Misto, some good glass food storage containers, a good chef’s knife.
It’s a sound that never gets old!! I still get excited at each appointment to hear that thump, thump, thump. So exciting!
I’ve heretofore resisted making this book recommendation because 1) I’m not a regular commenter, and 2) I know how the newly pregnant are inundated with (well meaning) advice and tips. However, I cannot recommend highly enough Real Food for Mother and Baby by Nina Planck. I know you are an RN and already eat real food, but this book is not just about how to eat well during pregnancy and after the baby arrives – the author just has such a refreshing perspective when it comes to pregnancy…. I really think you’ll love it. You can get a good preview of it on amazon
Thanks for the rec Paula! Sounds like my kind of book.
Yup. That book was great. I’d recommend it, too. It really is all about real food, and how to better understand feeding a pregnant body and then a baby in the way(s) nature intended us to…esp in the face of processed and subsidized factory foods. My son is now starting to eat (!) at 6 months and I am grateful for having read this book to help me make better choices that are in line with what our pediatrician thinks but not always what the “industry” that makes baby food and writes the other books tell us.
So glad that you heard your babies heartbeat! That must be such an amazing feeling!
Can’t wait to read the new blog!
Grapes on the side,
grapes on the side
Eatin’ real food such as
grapes on the side!
haha
It must all feel so real now!!
Or maybe its felt pretty real ever since all the morning time near barfing…. ?
This was DEFINITELY a turning point!
kath which rice cooker did you end up getting? thanks!
Look at her post for Jan 26th, she talks about it. I know this because I have been contemplating the same cooker!
http://astore.amazon.com/thefrontburnerblog-20/detail/B000MAERM0
Thanks Kelly! That’s the one!
awesome thank you! i don’t feel like doing extensive research but i want a rice cooker. should i just get this one? what did you decide kelly?
Well I haven’t tried them all, but based on my experience and Emily’s, this one is really good
I haven’t bought one yet, but would definately buy one with a timer, I think that will be the key! Plus, like that this one has different settings for different things.
Wonderful! Hearing the heartbeat is a joyous time!
What a special time!! Enjoy every moment!
Kath, I just started reading your blog every day a couple of months ago. I am so excited to see you are pregnant! I am 15 weeks right now, so not too far ahead of you. It’s so fun to read along with you as I am going through, or went through, a lot of the same things, feelings, etc. Hearing the heartbeat is amazing, isn’t it? For me it was SUCH a moment in my life I will never forget it. It was almost spiritual or something! I have my first u/s in a few weeks and I can’t wait to see what’s in there! hehe. Good luck to you and I will be reading along- when will BERF make it’s debut??
Congrats to you! BERF is hopefully debuting at 13 weeks – in 2 weeks
I always sing “Oats in a Jar, oats in a jar..” to “Pants on the ground”!
ME TOO!
So sweet and amazing!!!
Belated congrats!! I’ve been following your blog since early 2008 and for some reason, even on days I’ve been too busy to read your entries, the past few months I’ve been sure to at least scan them on my igoogle page every few days to see if you had wine or beer included because I was wondering if you might be pregnant.
We’ve sort of been on the same schedule – I’m also 29, got married around the same time, made a job change around when you did by chance – and I had a hunch this might follow suit, as I am now 18 weeks pregnant! I CANNOT WAIT for your baby blog!! This is my first pregnancy so I am loving reading, watching, talking about all things baby and will be sure to be an active member of that blog. Glad to hear you’re feeling better – hope things are smooth and healthy from here on out!
Haha about the quick scans
Congrats to you!
Congrats…so happy for you. Enjoy this special time and can’t wait to hear more about it all soon
So great you got to hear the heartbeat. Very Cool! Lunch looks perfect!
Aww! Lil’ heartbeat
too cute!
So exciting!!! Congrats again, I bet hearing the heartbeat was so amazing
YAY
Congrats to you and Matt! I’m so happy for y’all and your whole family as well
. Your lives will never be the same which is a wonderful thing (Mommy of two here). Soak up and cherish each and every moment. The nausea and tiredness will pass and you will find your groove.
I loved your “Go Duke.” That was such an exciting game to watch and what an INCREDIBLE ending! My husband and I were jumping up and down screaming. The cat skidaddled out of the room as fast as he could. My oldest is a senior at Carolina and has yet to go to a game.
I can’t wait to see your precious bundle of joy!
Hearing the baby’s heartbeat for the first time, makes it seem so real! Wait until the untrasound! Truly amazing! My husband and I held out knowing the sex of the baby for both my pregnancies…I loved the anticipation of it all! We choose a mustard yellow for the bedroom with a unisex Noah’s Ark theme…I had two boys.
Awww…congratulations! That sound is amazing and something you will never forget.
I’m glad you’re feeling a little better today.
awwwww, the sweetest little sound in the world is your own baby’s heartbeat! I’m so happy you got to hear it today! Blessings to you and the little peanut!
oh BERF! i love it. what a sweet miracle, huh? little bun in there.
BERF! I love it!
Ha ha, I love BERF. What a wonderful, sweet moment to hear the heartbeat. That has to be just so surreal. Can’t wait to see the new blog.
I wanted to wish you a belated “Congratulations!!”. I am so excited for you and Matt. I also must say I think you have been eating fabulously. I was so sick I mostly stuck with pasta and like you, very little veggies.
I love your blog and think you do such a wonderful job. Regarding the not so nice comments a few days ago, it made me sad. Obviously you are a worker bee who churns out outstanding posts with tons of great health information, home organization and everything in between. In seeing your brief posts I just assumed you had other things in the works that would be later revealed on Kerf. Obviously I was right!!!!
exciting baby heart beat!!! cant wait for berf! thanks for keeping it separate. I appreciate that this is going ti be separate.
I want the lovey dovey talk now!! This is just so exciting
Great news! What an exciting day.
cant wait for BERF! what a big day for you- so exciting !!
Wow, I cannot even begin to imagine how magical hearing baby’s heartbeat must have been! And I’m super anxious for the premier of BERF!
(the quesa-dilla looks really good. I need to make more of those!)
That is so exciting!!!!! Congratulations again.
Aww, that’s SO great to hear.
I absolutely love hearing that “swoosh-swoosh”
Wait until you feel the baby move!! One of my favorite things of pregnancy by far!!!
Haven’t stopped by in a while…congrats on the baby and wishing you all the best! My sis and bro-in-law are pregnant now too and heard the heartbeat a few weeks ago….super-exciting!
Kath, I’m so excited for you. Seriously, ever since I read your news, my maternal heartstrings have been feeling a constant tug. I can’t imagine hearing your baby’s heartbeat for the first time. I would have just lost it then and there. Can’t wait to read Berf!
That’s so exciting – must have been surreal!!
Looking forward to your new blog too!
That must have been such an amazing moment! By the way.. that quesadilla looks amazing!!
How exciting to hear the heartbeat!!! I’ll always remember being a junior in high school when my history teacher announced to us that his wife was pregnant by starting class with, “I heard an amazing thing yesterday. I heard my baby’s heart beat.” And all the girls started crying because we were all in love with him and how sweet he was
awww so precious…I can’t wait till you are able to unveil the baby blog – I’m not preggers and never have been, but I think it will be good for me to learn a thing or two
Ahh that’s so exciting and I’m sure such a special moment for you guys. And BERF?! That’s the cutest thing EVER!!
Your news is so exciting! Can’t wait for BERF!!
YAH so exciting!!
how awesome that you got to hear the heartbeat today! i LOVED my appointments every month so i could hear and/or see the baby. it is seriously the most amazing experience ever!
I got to hear my babys heart beat (for my first time) today too! Its such a relief hearing and knowing everything we’re doing on the outside is working for them on the inside!
Oh fun!!! Hope it was as fun for you as it was for me
Such a wonderful moment! Congratulations!!!
I love the name BERF–I got a chuckle from that! Like mama like child
I am sure your baby will LOVE real food, too!
http://faithfulsolutions.blogspot.com/
Congrats on hearing the heartbeat!!! How exciting!!
Is that honest tea as in the brand or just regular tea? hahah
the brand!
So exciting you heard the heartbeat!
Aww that must have been amazing! I’m so excited for you guys!
Did Matt go with you to hear the beat?! Random question: What’s your favorite tortilla? We (and by we I mean my boyfriend) eat a lot of bean burritos and we’re always trying to find the best tortilla. The ones at TJ’s are good, but he just picked up some Mission ones I think (they claim they’re the best-selling in the country), but the list of ingredients is hideously long with all kinds of artificial colors, partially hydrogenated oils and all kinds of other NOT REAL crap. We need to check WF, but I figured I’d ask!
He didn’t go because it was quick and he was at the bakery, but he’s going to the next big appt.
I buy the Whole Foods Whole Wheat. They have a good ingredient list and are a good portion size.
Thanks, Kath! We’ll give them a try!
Congratulations to you and Matt! I can’t wait to read BERF! Love the pants on the ground reference
Awww! So excited for you! I always sob the first time I hear the heart beat!! I always feel kind of silly, but once the tech told me it would be silly if I didn’t cry! Such a blessing!
Oh man. That quesadilla is NOT helping me have the restraint to not snack until dinner!!
Congrats on the baby and hearing the heartbeat for the first time! I remember driving in terrible traffic in pouring rain to the visit when we first heard our son’s heartbeat (my husband almost didn’t make it to the visit in time so I had to stall the nurse a bit). It was so worth fighting traffic in the downpour to hear that!
I’ve been a reader for a while but this is my first time commenting. I enjoy your blog immensely.
Forgive me for the silly question but where did you get those mason jars with the dog faces on them?
Thanks for your first comment!!
The dog glasses are from Lagunitas brewery in CA. I bet you can find them online somewhere
Thanks so much, Kath! I found their online store.
