KERF Survey Round II

February 17, 2014

It’s been over a year since KERF adapted from a 5-year-old thrice daily blog to a mix of all kinds of posts. It was a really good decision on my part, as finding time in my day to work is harder than ever. Some days I am lucky to get 10 minutes to sit down at the computer.

I really miss the old KERF, however, and I know a lot of you do too. I have asked myself if there is any way I can go back to that style of daily blogging, but I honestly can’t even imagine it. I’d probably end up going days without posting and would always be behind, which would leave me in a perpetual state of panic.

Despite feeling pulled in many directions, I truly do wish I could put more time into this blog. I see all the amazing and incredible sites out there and get filled with ideas for my own – and no time to execute them. I have a long list of post topics in my head and not enough nap time hours to crank them out. Hiring a babysitter has really helped with my sanity, but it hasn’t allowed time for the true focus that I yearn for.

So with that off my chest, I thought it might be time for another survey. Last time I found your responses to be super helpful in guiding my first year of topics. I could use a little feedback again. Please share your thoughts, and feel free to leave topic requests in the comments on this post!

Sad that you don’t consider recipes one of your main topics anymore, that used to be my favorite part :(

I don’t feel that they are one of my strengths I guess…at least traditional ones. When we create a good soup or make cheese I will still share those but there are so many blogs with beautiful recipes that I don’t know if they should be a focus. But I certainly will take this request!

I really enjoy the day-in-the-life and meal recaps the most, especially your homemade creations. The Hugh Jass salads are the best! You think of the best combinations (who else would think of that type of PB sandwich you created for Smuckers?) and thats why I love both your recipes and meal pictures. It gives me great inspiration and desire to try some of your unique combinations!

I’m not exactly sure what to call these post but I LOVE the posts where you share ‘clean living’ like the soap nuts post that included why you choose them and costs and such. I don’t like to use chemicals and I’m sure with a baby around you must have found some work arounds.
Thank you

Hey Dee! I am really getting more into green cleaning and shared my favorite products here: http://www.ahealthysliceoflife.com/2014/02/04/february-focus-green-cleaning-at-home/

With a toddler and another baby on the way, I don’t like messing around with chemicals either! :)

I think its important to blog the way you want! And according to your own goals. The “lately” posts I haven’t prioritized reading anymore, I follow a lot of blogs and the photo dump of meals isn’t my thing. But I know some readers love seeing what you eat! So I wouldn’t focus on what we want, I would focus on what you like to do! The beauty of blogging is you can keep changing/growing! Keep up the good work!

The new KERF format is probably why this is one of my all time favorite blogs. I love the mix of information, topics, and discussions. I rarely read the comments section of blogs but there always seems to be a good debate happening on KERF that really gets me thinking outside the box. I appreciate a blog that gets me thinking in new ways-so thanks for all of the great posts from the past year!

I’ve been a KERF reader for a few years now and I have to say that despite all the changes to KERF since Mazen was born I am still an avid reader and your blog is still my favorite! I love your lately posts because they always give me inspiration for my own meals! Please don’t ever get rid of those! If anything, I’d love to see more of those!

One suggestion: I’m sure many of your readers (including myself) are struggling with weight loss. I love your honest, informal posts about weight loss, and especially your thoughts on actually implementing a plan. For me, it’s not so much about gathering more nutrition and exercise information, it’s about actually making myself DO it. Finding a way to make it happen. I find a lot value in your little tricks and tips to help make weight loss happen. Kind of the behavioral/habitual side of weight loss/management.

Kath, I think you have the perfect balance. This is why Kerf is without a doubt my favourite blog and i think always will be!!! The fact that you care so much about your readers and what they enjoy is what makes you stand out among other blogs. I loved the old kerf and i love the new kerf. I can definitely understand how it would be impossible to go back to 3 posts a day- it still amazes me that you did it for FIVE years!!. I love how you have a organized schedule and post once a day every day. For me, inconsistency is what turns me away from most blogs. Keep up the amazing work !!! :) xo

Hi Kath – I’ve been reading for about three years now. I just wanted to let you know that I like your lately posts but since it is generally a whole weeks worth of food it’s hard for me to take it all in. Maybe breaking it up somehow? Just a friendly suggestion. I still love your site and totally understand not being able to post three times a day. However, I love seeing what your eating, but maybe not a full week all at once. Of course others may disagree! Thanks and have a great day!

Reply

29 KathEats February 17, 2014 at 1:40 pm

Well I could do 3 meals at a time but then I’d fill up my week of posts with only food :) I thought it was better to put it all together so you guys aren’t cheated of other kinds of posts. I’ll think about other ways I could organize it. I could do a day at a time, but I often am mixing and matching so I wouldn’t remember what I had together on which day.

Reply

30 Micki February 18, 2014 at 12:46 am

Maybe a weekend highlights post would work better? Rather than just posting all your meals because that’s your routine, maybe put together a little picture collage of your meals and then chose the best item in that category (breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, cocktail, party food, fish – if you ate it 3 times during that time period, etc). You could write more about that meal in detail and even link to past posts for recipes, if relevant. Just a thought! It would be a change, you’d still be sharing all your meals, but digging deeper, from a RD perspective with a healthy living balance twist.

Reply

31 Angelica February 18, 2014 at 11:09 am

I agree–highlights! I wonder if posting all your meals is simply a compulsion (because I’m the same way about certain things).

32 KathEats February 18, 2014 at 12:52 pm

I think there’s a part of me that still wants to be blogging every meal I eat (even though it’s down to about 80% now). I miss being able to say I do that!

When I have a big change in my life, I prefer to have things different, rather than as much the same as possible with a little tweak here and there. It doesn’t quite feel the same and it almost feels sloppy (not saying your blog changes have been sloppy!). Even you said you can’t go back to posting three times a day or even once a day. Here’s your chance to make a big splash! A fun change that is bold and different. YOU were known for 3 times a day like clockwork with a consistent format. Be a leader again. Revolutionize blogging again, Kath.

I totally agree with this. One of the reasons I started following KERF was because of the food inspiration! I loved seeing what oatmeal combos you were having and all the lunch and dinners with delicious looking fresh foods! But the “lately” posts are just way too overwhelming for me.

Reply

35 Fancy February 18, 2014 at 12:07 pm

I completely agree. I REALLY, really miss your old way of blogging. I loved seeing how each meal “fit” together in 1 day (and the choices you made throughout that day with events, etc). “Lately” posts don’t show how your food “fits” together each day if that makes sense, they are more like just lists of what you ate. Your blog is still one of my absolute favorites, although I admit that I really miss the way it once was…I loved seeing the pieces of your life and how all of the pieces fit together each day (from home organization to daily events to food)…I miss everything about your old way of blogging. XO!

Hi Kath,

This is an unrelated question but there is something I would need your thoughts/inputs. Last summer, my hubby and I wanted to get pregnant and we did but my health took a big dip south and we had to terminate at week 9. As if it wasn’t enough, I have developed prenatal OCD and because it got so nasty the psychiatrist/obstetrician put me on antidepressants. Fast forward, now my physical health is at a good place and OCD under control and hubby and I think it is a great time to conceive again. Well, I got on the scale the other day and holly molly at a height of 5’2, I weighed about 144 pounds! The last time I weighed myself was in July and it was 125 pounds (a weight I had consistently maintained for a long time). I workout regularly and eat a clean Mediterranean diet. I don’t normally weight myself, so while I noticed some increase in appetite and weight gain, I was guessing 6-7 pounds, not 19!!! I am guessing antidepressants have something to do with it… As an RD, do you think it is a good idea to lose weight before I get pregnant again or should I go ahead with getting pregnant and simply follow a more conscious approach to weight gain? I also know that once I lose weight, it is recommended that you maintain it for at least 3 months before getting pregnant again. I am not sure if I want to keep delaying a pregnancy. What are your thoughts on that? Would you have any tips to share about how a woman who is in my situation should eat/exercise? If you could direct me to any resources I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks a lot Kath!
Denise

Hi Denise, I’m sorry to hear of your situation :( I really can’t answer this without knowing your full health history, but it’s definitely something to speak with your doctor about. I think if you did get pregnant your body would just naturally gain less at the higher end of your weight range, so I wouldn’t worry toooo much, but again, I’d ask your doctor about your medications and things before giving it the thumbs up.

Reply

39 Denise February 17, 2014 at 4:47 pm

Thanks Kath. That is what I think as well. Right now I am under my GP’s care. My blood works came back fine (I will stay on antidepressants as confirmed by my docs) and while my GP said weight gain due to antidepressants is usually 4 to 5 pounds, it is possible that I gained that much because of them. He didn’t comment too much about my weight, I guess women of all shapes sizes and health habits get pregnant that he is not too concerned about a patient that is a little overweight. Did you follow any nutrition related websites/blogs, etc for pregnancy?

I selected that I really liked the “lately” posts, but one thing I think might be helpful is if instead you groups the meals for a day together. I say that because when looking at how an RD eats it’s helpful to see how the day balances out.

Hey Kath! I’m a longtime reader and have enjoyed both formats. I really like your casual, conversational posts like the lately, home neat home, family, and nutrition-oriented posts. I agree with some of the other readers that the lately posts are kind of a photo dump — maybe you could select a few meals and talk about them, or break them up into two posts (breakfast/lunch and dinner?).

As for constructive feedback, I don’t like the sponsored posts at all and usually just skim those. I also don’t really care for the RD guest posts — they’re too long for me, too research paper-y, and often strike me as one-sided. Since nutrition is such an evolving field, I’d be interested in reading a debate between two RDs on a specific topic — like the Paleo diet from a few weeks ago — and seeing different perspectives.

Also, I have to say — even though I’ve gotten frustrated at times with the increase in sponsored posts, that’s my one gripe — all in all, I like your new format much better because of the balance of different things.

49 Akaptein February 17, 2014 at 3:37 pm

I’m not a fan of the ” lately” posts, and prefer the personal, lifestyle posts. But it was the opposite when I first started reading in 08, and was trying to lose weight.

Hi Kath, I took the survey last time and I did so again just now. I love looking at pictures of food and reading food descriptions (this is a weird hobby of mine; I also love reading menus and cookbooks), so I have to admit that was what originally got me reading your blog. It was great when you were posting three times a day because if I had five minutes free I could surf over to your site and check to see what you ate that day! I understand that you are busier than you were before – are you starting up a different business or trying to cut back on your hours of work? I can certainly see that if you reduced your hours you would have to cram more into the dedicated blogging time. But before Mazen you seemed to have a good balance; is there any way to get back there especially considering you now have childcare help?

That being said, my favorite kind of posts are food posts and recaps of meals. I don’t like the sponsored posts, although I understand they have a role in this blog and that’s fine. I usually don’t read them or just skim to see if there’s anything that would interest me. For that reason I put that I would like to see less of “New Finds” because it seems like that’s where the sponsored stuff comes in more. Thanks for the opportunity to give feedback!

I’m sad that I had to choose only one out of the first list! I chose ‘day in the life’ but equally love the ‘lately’ and ‘home neat home’ posts. I agree…it was hard to pick! I have loved the new format (the old one stressed me out because I couldn’t ever keep up!) and don’t really even mind the sponsored posts. You do a good job with making them interesting & informative usually. I find “Lately” too overwhelming…too many meals for me to read about in one post, but I do love the photos. I think recapping only a few good/new meals might be a good way to make it shorter. My favorite posts are the occasional posts where you share from your heart about what is going on in your life (there wasn’t a category for that, but I’d call it “reflective posting.”) I pretty much enjoy all of your posts though and always stop by to see what you have that day for us! I have a 14 month old and totally respect the business and community you have created here and am inspired by how you have adapted it to meet the needs of your family. I continue to read in part because I just want to support a mom providing for her family in a creative and intelligent way.

I started reading your blog, Carrots ‘n Cake, Daily Garnish and Eat Live Run after I had my first daughter 4 years ago and was home a lot (December baby!) more and focused on eating better and exercising more after my baby. I often wondered how all of your blogs would change as you became mothers. I have really enjoyed ready your journey and Emily’s journey and seeing how you both have adapted your blogs to kid(s). I look forward to seeing the same from Jenna and Tina. As a mother (of now 2 – I have a 4 year old and a 2 1/2 year old now) I have really enjoyed the variety. I enjoy the food posts and the Mazen posts and the organization posts. Honestly, the only posts I skip are the “Lately” posts.

Keep up the good work and I really look forward to continue following your journey – with your family and your blog!

Have Fun,

I am sure you have thought of this, but I will offer it as a suggestion anyway. I like the mix of post topics and variety right now, but I do sometimes miss the daily food diary style (so rare these days), Anyway, instead of doing three posts three times a day, which I know is just not possible and would also limit your other posting topics, maybe do like a WIAW kind of thing once a week. Like a day in the life, but adding in all the meals once per week (including Mazen’s meals is optional but sometimes a toddler mom would like to see :) )

My primary suggestion would be to keep your blog real to you. Your readers I suspect, are drawn to your posts where you are in it. Trying to make your blog fit what people want or adjusting to “the new ways of the blog world” may be why some readers arefrustrated. When you first started blogging you were not doing it for money but it grew to that overtime and you were successful and suspect that was because we could always find you there and it felt sincere when reading. I miss you in many of your posts but when I find you in them those are the ones that end up being my favorite. I know that may not be very helpful but that is my two cents!

I like seeing your “meals lately” and “day in the life” the best, but I also have been enjoying nutrition topics that either you or another RD covers, ie. the Paleo post. I think you strike a good balance of informal/personal and also organized/formal posts!

I love the new format of this site. It’s is perfectly balanced. It’s always fresh and interesting and you’re not stuck with the same type of posts every day. I love the weekend recaps when we get to see the restaurants and wine tastings and Saturday morning market trips, outings with your friends, etc. I, personally have no problem with the sponsored posts. I get why they exist and honestly, they’re really well written. I know some people say they skip them but hey, they’re missing out on some nice recipes and giveaways in those posts.

If I had to think of my least favorite type of post it would be the guest RD posts. I really do try to read them every time, but I end up just skimming them. I don’t mind info heavy posts but I like it when the info is balanced with an interesting conversational voice, not just a long list of info. Hey, I know that’s the difference between an RD and a food blogger so it doesn’t really bother me. LOL But I do just skim those and then read the discussion in the comments.

I love the food posts where we get to know more of the how’s and whys behind your food choices. Things like how you squeezed some extra veg into dinner because you didn’t have much that day, or like how to still have healthy lunches when you’re on the go. I have young kids too, and I know for me food has become much less intentional because meals are just such a hurry and there’s so much to do, but I’d love to pick up tips if you’re still finding ways to make healthful eating work around a busy kid centered schedule.

I like your new format. It incorporates a little bit of everything. :) I do love the weekend & adventures postings though. And the New Finds.

Keep up the great work! Love all you are doing – especially with a little one. When you made your decision to blog less, I was worried because I have loved your blog and thought you may not blog often. To be honest, your blog is still the best! I wouldn’t be able to find the time to see it everyday anyway so, I think you found the perfect balance. I follow a few quilt blogs and no one posts everyday! I did the survey, but I truly love all of the categories. Thank you for ALL your info that you give us!

Hi Kath

I would love to see a debate or sort of opposing views on the same topic as in the case of the paleo diet post a few weeks ago. Also love the lately posts as well as the nutrition posts. Could we have some posts such as what Matt eats in a day. Like a one day breakdown with Myfitnesspal similar to what you have done in the past, also his exercise routine etc. More from Matt on his style of eating while away at work would be great too. It might surprise you but some guys read this blog too. Reading since a year and a half. Will be continuing to do so loyally.

I think the balance is pretty good! I am not an enormous fan of sponsored posts (it feels like a trick sometimes, like someone is trying to sell me something without me realizing it) but I don’t mind them when bloggers were “sponsored post” right up front in the headline. Ain’t No Mom Jeans does a really nice job with this.
