Just Throw It All In

February 2, 2010

Morning :)

Wish I could play all day today, but as it turns out, I’ve got a number of things that have to be done for my internship so I’ll be at the computer most of the day. We’ve got a dreary rainy day so I think some hot tea will keep me company.

I was really hungry this morning for a big bowl of oats!!

IMG_4952 (640x427)

I ended up making a HUUUUGE bowl because I just kept throwing it all in!!

IMG_4948 (640x427)

The Mix

  • 1/4 cup Scottish oats (= 1 serving because of smaller grain size), water, vanilla soy milk, pinch salt, vanilla
  • 1 small banana (started to put in half then just tossed it all in)
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1/2 a cup of cottage cheese (again, started with about 1/4 a cup and only had a little left so I just scraped it all in and it ended up being a little to much!!)
  • Crumbled granola bar "cookie" from last night :)
  • TJ’s PB, sunk in

= one amazing but super filling bowl!

IMG_4946 (640x427)

Christmas Blend + Pumpkin Spice Decaf

IMG_4940 (640x427)

I think I lost a tooth!!

That’s an intense bowl of oats! As usual :)
Have a great day! (even if it is a little dreary out!)

3 Jeannie February 2, 2010 at 8:25 am

AH….Dean and Deluca how I miss thee……

Nice bowl of oats!

Love reading your blog because you are the only other person I know that is as giddy in the morning as me. LOL

4 Estela @ Weekly Bite February 2, 2010 at 8:26 am

Hahaha! It does look like a lost tooth in your coffee!

Have a great day!!

5 tiffany February 2, 2010 at 8:26 am

its amazing.. you are having more snow days down south than we have had here in vermont!

6 Super G February 2, 2010 at 8:26 am

Oatmeal looks yummy!
I think I see a candy corn in your coffee! LOL
Enjoy your day!

7 Jessica @ How Sweet February 2, 2010 at 8:29 am

Those oats look amazing! It almost looks like crumbled bacon on top….hahah where is my mind?

8 Erin (Travel, Eat, Repeat) February 2, 2010 at 8:30 am

I wanted oats, too, but was too cold to go out to the garage where the new box of oats is stored! 😛 Settled for PB toast instead and it’s just not the same.

9 Danielle (Coffee Run) February 2, 2010 at 8:33 am

Christmas Blend + Pumpkin Spice coffee sounds like heaven in a mug
(I see a shoe 😉 )

10 Nutritious Foodie February 2, 2010 at 8:35 am

hmm I could use a cup of coffee this morning. It is cold and drizzly here in Houston as well. I am hoping for a nice warm weekend for our 45 mile bike ride.

11 Kristin @ Iowa Girl Eats February 2, 2010 at 8:45 am

Ooo – I just had Scottish oats for the very first time this weekend. I love how chewy they are – so unique and different than old fashioned oats! Unfortunately I bought enough OF oats to last me 10 years at Costco, so I won’t be buying the Scott’s style anytime soon!!

12 Freya @ foodfitnessandfreya.wordpress.com February 2, 2010 at 8:45 am

That oatmeal looks and sounds amazing!! I do that with mine too – this morning I had oatmeal, banana, milk, peant butter, toffee flavour yogurt and Fru-Grains…the more the merrier in oatmeal I say!!
Have a good day :)

13 Daniel February 2, 2010 at 8:54 am

Looks delicious, it made me hungry at least.
Just curious, what kind of cottage cheese do you use? (Low-fat, non-fat, normal, large/small curd, creamy or dry, brand?) Every time my parents bought cottage cheese I chose not to eat it due to the obnoxiously long ingredients list and I was wondering if there was a decent style to eat w/o all of the junk in it. I’ve never tried cottage cheese with my oats but I figured if I can find some good cottage cheese, why not. (Sorry if you’ve posted it before.) ^_^

14 Kath February 2, 2010 at 8:56 am

Lately I’ve been buying Organic Valley 4% CC. I also like Cabot fat free (the ONLY fat free dairy product I’ve ever liked!) And I do like Breakstones too. Cottage cheese varies so much brand to brand. But the Organic Valley is awesome – and organic :)

15 Heather (Heather's Dish) February 2, 2010 at 9:00 am

what a yummy bowl! i love your love for oatmeal…makes me so excited about going and making my own :)

16 rustique February 2, 2010 at 9:04 am

Oh, wow. I think one day you should just open a restaurant specializing in decadent oats. You’d make anyone a believer.

17 Jamie February 2, 2010 at 9:09 am

great use of your oat bar! those things always get better when paired with oats 😉

18 megan February 2, 2010 at 9:12 am

even if you have lots of work to do, it’s still nice to be at home, isn’t it? I wish we had snow days! haha but I live in Michigan, so it would have to be an all-out blizzard before anything would get cancelled. i’m ready to move.

19 Kate (This American Wife) February 2, 2010 at 9:18 am

Have a great day, Kath! Enjoy working from home and stay warm and toasty.

20 skinnyrunner February 2, 2010 at 9:22 am

thats a massive bowl. can you eat that whole thing??

21 Kath February 2, 2010 at 9:24 am

YES! I would have said if I didn’t. It was actually the perfect amount.

22 leslie February 2, 2010 at 9:25 am

Hi Kath,
I’ve been reading your website for about 3 weeks now. It’s fun and inspiring! I love the oatmeal with the banana-I’ve made it many times and it’s so tasty!

I’ve asked this question many times, but I bet you have the perfect answer. How do you use a French Press? Exactly how much water to how much coffee? I can’t seem to make it taste right. I like my coffee fairly strong, then I add some frothed 1% milk and some stevia.

Thanks in advance and I hope you get lots done today!

23 Kath February 2, 2010 at 9:26 am

Everything you need to know:

24 Sophie @ yumventures February 2, 2010 at 9:28 am

That looks like great oatmeal, I love the cottage cheese addition!

25 Kathleen Ichord February 2, 2010 at 9:29 am

How are you liking the Chia seeds? Considering buying them.

26 Kath February 2, 2010 at 9:33 am

Changed my life. I don’t know if I can eat oats without them! They improve the texture so much (thicken and fluff)

27 Kathleen Ichord February 2, 2010 at 7:32 pm

That good?Thanks!

28 Sarah @ The Foodie Diaries February 2, 2010 at 9:37 am

ok as much as i love your oat creations, im more in love with your bowl collection. you should add some to your open sky!

29 Hannah February 2, 2010 at 9:47 am

I absolutely expected to be seeing those granola bars pop up on your oatmeal this morning – particularly when you said they ended up flatter and crunchier than you intended!! Oatmeal makes all those little bits and bobs so much fun 😀

Good luck with getting all your little jobs done!

30 Ameena February 2, 2010 at 9:48 am

I love your oatmeal creations! They are always unique unlike mine. I live vicariously through you. :)

31 Sarah R February 2, 2010 at 9:54 am

Holy froth! Have a wonderful day! The sun is finally out here (after weeks of dreary weather) and it brings a smile to my face!

32 RhodeyGirl February 2, 2010 at 10:01 am

Your breakfast nook looks especially serene today. I need to start eating breakfast at the table more, and less at my desk.

33 Anne [email protected] Weigh of Life February 2, 2010 at 10:04 am

Have a great day, Kath!

34 Ellen February 2, 2010 at 10:06 am

35 Jil February 2, 2010 at 10:10 am

Rainy dreary days are good excuses to be productive (esp when you need to be :) ) …not that you’re not one of the most productive people I know of already! :) The oats look outstannndin’!

36 Susan February 2, 2010 at 10:14 am

Hey Kath,

That bowl looks bangin’! Question: do you heat the cottage cheese at all or stir it into the oats post-cooking? And does that make for a luke-warm bowl of oats? Just curious! Thanks!

37 Kath February 2, 2010 at 2:34 pm

I stirred it in near the end – and the oats are usually so hot it doesn’t cool it down much at all. Takes about a minute to get hot again.

38 Rose February 2, 2010 at 10:18 am

The coffee also looks like a jalapeno, I think :)

You should collage all the coffee pictures together and create a print for your wall.

39 Hellena February 2, 2010 at 10:18 am

Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your blog. Your posts are always interesting and the perfect length. And I think you pictures are FABULOUS! You’re doing a great job and I love checking in with you every day.
Getting some oatmeal inspiration is a bonus of course. I myself am totally into cutting up dried figs to put in my oatmeal at the moment. A suble sweet taste and interesting texture.

40 Kath February 2, 2010 at 2:35 pm

Thanks :)

41 Jess February 2, 2010 at 10:18 am

Those oats look fantastic! I tried caramelizing the banana like you did yesterday (?) before adding the oats and it was fantastic! Yesterday, I tried your whole wheat yogurt pancakes. SO GOOD!
I love your blog, Kath!

42 Mary (Food Fit & Fun) February 2, 2010 at 10:19 am

yum I had a super-filling bowl of oats this morning made with 1/2 cup of pumpkin and 1/2 cup oats. I love the pumpkin, raisin, banana, milk, nutmeg & cinnamon addition. So tasty! Enjoy your day off even though you will be doing some work. It’s much nicer to work from home!

43 Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) February 2, 2010 at 10:25 am

You have to admit that the “throw all kinds of stuff in a bowl of oats” is always yummy! Good luck with getting everything done! At least you don’t have the commute to deal with today!

44 Tami @nutmegnotebook.com February 2, 2010 at 10:25 am

You are so lucky to have another day off. Your bowl of oats looks good and filling.

45 Beth @ DiningAndDishing February 2, 2010 at 10:30 am

Enjoy your second snow day! Hope it’s a productive one :)

46 Run Sarah February 2, 2010 at 10:30 am

Yay for a day off! Your oats look great as usual – I need to try these chia seeds soon, they make your oatmeal look extra thick/fluffy.

47 Lauren @ Eater not a runner February 2, 2010 at 10:34 am

I still haven’t tried cottage cheese in oats but that looks pretty good!

48 Katie @ Health for the Whole Self February 2, 2010 at 10:35 am

I love the design on that bowl! You have one of the most adorable collections of dishes I’ve ever seen! Makes me want to go on a shopping to some place like Crate & Barrel! :)

49 Katie @ Health for the Whole Self February 2, 2010 at 10:36 am

*on a shopping SPREE that is! (note to self: proofread comments before submitting!)

50 Erin February 2, 2010 at 10:42 am

52 Jenn @ Livewellfit February 2, 2010 at 11:10 am

LOOOOVEEE that bowl of oatmeal! Makes me want to eat that for lunch today. :) Enjoy your snow day even though it’s filled with computer work. We are freezing here in Boston but no snow.

53 bec February 2, 2010 at 11:14 am

I look forward to your breakfast posts everyday because I love to see what you put in your oats and what shape your coffee made :)

54 Heather February 2, 2010 at 11:27 am

Enjoy your day! Love the tooth in your coffee…

Hope it stops raining – rain is so dismal.

Still haven’t tried cottage cheese in my oats – do you heat it up first or just add it at the end?

55 Kath February 2, 2010 at 2:35 pm

Stir in at end!

56 Retta @ RunRettaRun February 2, 2010 at 12:01 pm

I know i’m repeating what a lot of people have already said but those oats look INCREDIBLE!!!! You take the most amazing pictures, seriously.
And congrats on your snow day! It’s rainy and yucky here too. Ran + melty snow= major slush

Looks like a great and satisfying way to start the day!

63 Allison K February 2, 2010 at 1:08 pm

It does look like a lost tooth in your coffee! I too am jealous of your bowl collection!

64 Lauren February 2, 2010 at 1:26 pm

I don’t understand how you ladies eat this huge bowls of oats. I made one way smaller than this today and could barely fit down half of it!

65 Kath February 2, 2010 at 2:36 pm

We have big stomachs!

66 Megan February 2, 2010 at 1:32 pm

I topped my oats w/ granola for the first time today and whoa is that ever delsh!!!

Good luck getting your stuff done!

67 Alison (Life's Little Lusts) February 2, 2010 at 2:09 pm

oh so yummy looking!

the coconut-cinnamon roasted squash i made last night 😀
OMG so good,
i knew i had to share it with you.

i steamed half a kabocha squash in the microwave,
brushed it with artisana goji coconut butter
and a little bit of vanilla syrup,
sprinkled it all with cinnamon and
roasted it in the oven at 350 for about 25 mins.
i highly recommend giving it a try!

68 Kath February 2, 2010 at 2:36 pm

Wow – coconut butter on squash! I must try it.

69 Chelsea February 2, 2010 at 2:27 pm

It looks like a candy corn to me! =D
