Jefferson Juice

Happy President’s Day!!

Busy day!! I forget sometimes what it’s like to be out of the house all day :)

A good day to visit Jefferson’s home, no?

We ventured up the mountain for the debut of Starr Hill’s new Monticello Ale!

Read about the collaboration here. The beer is supposed to be as true to the beer that Jefferson made as possible – using a mix of barley, wheat and corn as well as the closest hops and recipe to that time period.

What did we think?

Not bad. But I think modern beers are better : )

Karen joined us for the adventure and we all went to lunch afterwards

To Orzo!

Karen and I both ordered the salad special – local chicken with cannellini beans, roasted peppers, feta cheese and grilled zucchini in a fig balsamic.

As was Matt’s roasted veggie panini – with orzo!

After lunch we had a Great Harvest meeting, and are just now back home and starting to think about dinner. Sipping tea in the meantime!

I’ve been having a stupid issue with my home wifi – something interfering with the Eye-Fi card I think? Anyways, I wasted an hour troubleshooting it already. Gruf! Hopefully it’s fixed…but I might be without my Eye-fi now :( (FYI, Eye-Fi is a memory card that uploads your photos wirelessly. Normally, it’s AWESOME!)

Have a great evening!

I love that photo of you and the hubs and you and your mother in law. You’re glowing!

2 Nancy-The Wife of a Dairyman February 21, 2011 at 5:49 pm

Just what I was thinking as well….great photo of you and Matt! I envy you all that live in the east … much political history as compared to California. Hope to one day see it all for myself:)

3 Jane February 21, 2011 at 5:03 pm

I thought the same thing…what a beautiful looking couple you are :)

4 KathEats February 21, 2011 at 5:05 pm

Thanks guys! We had great lighting :)

5 Johanna B February 21, 2011 at 5:09 pm

All the exercise and healthy food you get doesn’t hurt either.

6 Holly @ Couch Potato Athlete February 21, 2011 at 5:10 pm

Your salad looks delicious although I would have chosen the panini!

Too bad about the tech problems — I feel your frustration!

7 Stacey (The Home-Cooked Vegan) February 21, 2011 at 5:11 pm

How weird the restaurant would serve orzo. Haha 😉 Beer in the afternoon, sounds like my kind of day! 😀

8 Ally February 21, 2011 at 5:13 pm

Sigh. Your life is like my vacation : (

I agree with the others, very nice pictures of you all today!

9 Johanna B February 21, 2011 at 5:14 pm

Forgot to say that I want that salad. Think I’ll try to recreate the veggie and protein parts at home tonight. Don’t know what I’ll do about the fig balsamic.

10 Meg February 21, 2011 at 5:15 pm

What a great date! And you all look GORGEOUS! Well, I’ll go for “handsome” for Matt, but you and Karen especially…gorgeous and happy ladies :)

11 Courtney @ The Granola Chronicles February 21, 2011 at 5:16 pm

What a fun beer event! Looks like you had a great time – so nice that Karen could join you two!

12 Jessica @ How Sweet It Is February 21, 2011 at 5:17 pm

Great photos of you guys. You look gorgeous Kath!

13 Kelly February 21, 2011 at 5:18 pm

I’ve never heard of Eye-Fi. That’s so interesting. Must investigate with Brad! :)

14 Natalie @ Will Jog For Food February 21, 2011 at 5:21 pm

Great pics of a great day! I had a great time when I went to Monticello…must have been about 10 years ago. I would love to go back again.

15 Maryann (The Balanced Bean) February 21, 2011 at 5:22 pm

Pretty pictures!! Chicken and feta on the salad look amazing!

16 Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) February 21, 2011 at 5:22 pm

We waisted time last week with email crap…it is so frustrating. Looks like you had a fun day celebrating this holiday! I hope you have a great afternoon. Enjoy your tea!

17 Justeen @ Blissful Baking February 21, 2011 at 5:22 pm

Love that picture of you and Matt, as well as the one of you and Karen! You all look great!

18 Kate February 21, 2011 at 5:23 pm

OMG: that salad is like the salad I’ve been craving all day. The only way it could be improved would be through the addition of fresh figs, I think :) It’s been too long since I’ve had orzo, methinks…

Good luck with the Eye-fi.

19 Nancy February 21, 2011 at 5:23 pm

Karen looks fantastic in that picture! How is she doing?

20 Freya (Brit Chick Runs) February 21, 2011 at 5:28 pm

I second that – how is she?

21 KathEats February 21, 2011 at 5:31 pm

Thanks for asking. She’s doing well – ups and downs depending on the day. She’s 10 days out from first treatment and seems to be doing better than last week, which was harder.

22 Freya (Brit Chick Runs) February 21, 2011 at 5:27 pm

ORZO!! I adore that stufff! 10 x better than any pasta 😀

23 Anna Lee February 21, 2011 at 9:41 pm

Orzo is pasta. Just in rice shape.

24 Kate (What Kate is Cooking) February 21, 2011 at 5:33 pm

I’m watching a special on Thomas Jefferson on the History Channel :) So jealous you live so close to Monticello!

25 Carrie H February 21, 2011 at 5:34 pm

You’re lucky to live close to Monticello! I’ve never been to the South (only FL) or really the East Coast (only NY state). I’d love to go see all the historical sights one day. It doesn’t help that I’m addicited to PBS and just watched a couple of 1990s episodes on Jefferson that talked about Monticello … and, now I’m thinking I once saw a PBS special or food network or history show on those guys trying to replicate that old beer … Maybe not, but I do think so!

26 kate February 21, 2011 at 5:40 pm

Orzo is the cutest restaurant name!

27 Katie @ peacebeme February 21, 2011 at 5:42 pm

Your earrings are so cute.

That sounds really interesting. I LOVE beer and tasting all different kinds. I also love history, so good mix!

28 Natalia - a side of simple February 21, 2011 at 5:53 pm

Karen looks beautiful! Please tell her we’re asking for her and that I’m keeping her in my prayers. You also look lovely in your black blazer!

29 Amanda (The Nutritionist Reviews) February 21, 2011 at 5:56 pm

That salad sounds great! That’s really cool that you are so close with your mother in law too.

30 Shannon @ A Better Me February 21, 2011 at 6:09 pm

I seriously think I’m going to plan a vacay around there! It looks like there’s so much to do! Would be a great weekend trip for sure 😀

Great pics!

31 Heather February 21, 2011 at 6:12 pm

I heart Karen! Kath, you should encourage her to start a blog of her own. She seems to have fabulous tastes in home interiors! Perhaps that could be her focus??

32 KathEats February 21, 2011 at 6:13 pm

Haha. She does have good taste, but I don’t think she could manage a blog!

33 Anne @ butter and bear February 21, 2011 at 6:17 pm

I have never heard of Eye-Fi, sounds awesome. Will have to check that out. Your pics today are beautiful!!

34 Rachel @ Healthy Teacher February 21, 2011 at 6:22 pm

Food looks great!

35 Annette @ enjoyyourhealthylife February 21, 2011 at 6:28 pm

What a fabulous day out :) And I agree-great pictures and yummy looking food!!

36 AJ @ Flowing to Fifty February 21, 2011 at 6:44 pm

Well, THAT’S a very groovy thing to be doing on President’s Day!! TJ, beer and great food. Awesome. It’s Family Day in Canada (not having any presidents…just a Queen and some hunky princes…and a soon-to-be new princess!) so I spent the day with my Little Sis. Sadly, there was no beer.

37 Hannah February 21, 2011 at 6:48 pm

I’ve never had orzo! It looks great though :)

38 Erika @ FoodFitnessFun February 21, 2011 at 7:10 pm

Happy President’s Day Kath!
Your lunch looks deeelicous. I love grilled veggies – I can’t wait until all the snow around me melts and I get to start grilling again! 😀

39 Emily @ Savory and Savage February 21, 2011 at 7:36 pm

Glad to see you had such a great day.

It was great to see Karen out and about!

40 J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) February 21, 2011 at 7:40 pm

Black is your color, Kath! You look very sophisticated in it. :)

I had orzo with my gyro yesterday. YUM! I would have stole Matt’s lunch, hehe.

41 J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) February 21, 2011 at 7:41 pm

PS. Jefferson is one of my favorite Presidents!!! I’d love to visit Monticello. :)

42 j February 21, 2011 at 7:47 pm

I went to Monticello as a child and would love to go back now when I would really appreciate it. Maybe Karen could do a guest post or some type of Q and A with us readers? Just an idea….

43 Lisa February 21, 2011 at 8:38 pm

Mmm, that veg panini looks so good! I’m a huge sandwich/wrap/panini kind of gal…they’re just so versatile and easy to make.

44 Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin February 21, 2011 at 8:53 pm

That salad sounds exactly like something I would have ordered! The fig balsamic sounds especially delicious.

45 stacey-healthylife February 21, 2011 at 9:38 pm

That’s salad sounds like a perfect combination. Matt’s orzo is looking pretty tasty also.

46 Kel February 21, 2011 at 9:58 pm

you look gorgeous!

47 Leah February 21, 2011 at 10:00 pm

Hey! I know this is random, but I was on the Whole Foods website today and I just wanted to tell you (and the other followers of this blog) about the online coupons for whole foooods =]

48 Alaina February 21, 2011 at 11:35 pm

I love checking out the historical sites around where I live. I would love to get back down to Virginia and explore. :-)

49 Christin@purplebirdblog February 22, 2011 at 12:06 am

Karen looks fantastic! I hope she’s feeling well!
