IT’S HERE!!!!!!!!!!!

July 10, 2008

I cannot believe summer school has come to an end!!! It FLEW by. I think back to the days when I was so excited to squeeze in a 30 minute workout in the afternoon before chemistry, and the labs that went until 9pm where I was so frustrated with my Chem professor that I was in tears. It was only a few weeks ago but it feels like its been months. I’m so excited to resume romantic weeknight dinners with the husband (I’ve been in night class since May!) and to be able to spend my full time at the gym and be able to relax on the weekends instead of studying all Saturday long. Technically I have one more Chem class (Monday) but I’m all done with my work and tests this afternoon.

I’m in a hurry this morning – I got up and went to the gym (solo today – somebody was too sleepy!) Way to end my schedule with a bang  I think I only missed 2-3 workouts due to being busy this whole time. Today was 30 minutes on the Stairmaster, 10 on the ET and a set of push-ups and abs.

20 oz Bowl of Oatmeal

I made a fabulous smoothie last night and tried to make it exactly 20 oz – perfect fit!

  • 1/3 cup portion of prepared banana oatmeal
  • About 1 cup plain low-fat yogurt
  • 1/2 cup plus splash of skim milk
  • Small handful blackberries

San Francisco Readers

If any of you are interested in joining me for dinner or drinks on Wednesday night, July 16th , send me an email and I’ll start a mass email to coordinate :) [email protected]

Final exams here I come!

hooray! congrats on the last day of summer school. you did it! wow, it went by fast! (well – maybe not for you…)

This summer seems to be flying by. Fourth of July already came and went!

When are you leaving for SanFran again? And when will you return? Will you be blogging from there? (sorry if you already mentioned this).

Have a great Thursday!

4 VeggieGirl July 10, 2008 at 7:53 am

I KNEW you’d get through summer school – congratulations!! Enjoy your last day :0)

5 hk July 10, 2008 at 8:03 am

Great job, so glad summer school stresses and schedules will ease up soon!! So impressive on all you’ve worked through and accomplished with flying colors :) have a great day, kath!

6 Brittany July 10, 2008 at 8:17 am

You are unbelievable considering you only missed 2-3 workouts when your schedule was so crazy. I’m glad it’s going to be over today and will get to relax for a while. Best of luck on your finals!

7 SweetsandSweats July 10, 2008 at 8:40 am

Congrats on ending summer school. Major accomplishment and a huge weight lifted!

And I am intrigued by the oats smoothie. It looks fabulous, perfectly icy cold for a summer morning and filling via the oats. I am feeling a need for me to reinact this yumminess!

8 Justy2003 July 10, 2008 at 8:46 am

Yay it’s your last day! Your summer is almost here!
If all of your tests/work is done today, why do you have chem on Monday? More of the prof’s torture? 😉

9 Kate July 10, 2008 at 8:54 am

Oh my gosh, yay!!! I am so impressed that you made it through intact! You’re inspiring in more ways than one. I think it’s one of the best feelings to work your tush off in school and then be rewarded with a vacation.

Have you ever heard of the book, “Eat to Live”? I know you’re not into diets (I’m not either) but the book is incredibly interesting in its discussion of how food impacts our disease risk. The doctor who wrote it has gotten thousands of his patients totally off their diabetes and heart meds. It’s also convinced me to include waaaaay more fruit and veg in my diet!

Have an awesome, awesome weekend! Enjoy yourself!

10 jimmi July 10, 2008 at 8:59 am

omg. CONGRATS ON YOUR LAST DAY! what a breath of fresh air. you deserve it girl. have a slightly larger pour of good wine tonight! :)

wish you were coming to LA sometime- would love to share a cocktail. make sure you check out pinkberry frozen yogurt while you’re in san fran. would be interested what you have to say about it. I’m clinically obsessed with it. congrats! congrats! congrats! job well done.

11 linds July 10, 2008 at 9:15 am

Yay for being done summer school!!!! Good luck on exams, though of course you’re going to ace them 😉

12 Every Gym's Nightmare July 10, 2008 at 10:15 am

wow, that was fast. now you have sometime to, you know, breathe.

13 Heather July 10, 2008 at 10:28 am

Yea!!! Congrats on being done! I’m only in night class 2 nights per week and know it will feel like a gift when I get those nights at home back.

Good luck on your tests :)

14 krisT July 10, 2008 at 10:47 am

Hi.. anyone please answer this question..

I’m 5’3 and 145 pounds .. i want to be 125. I lost weight to 130 in a kind of unhealthy way and then i just gained it back ..

I’m considering the south beach diet to jumpstart the process then resume to a healthy eating diet .. What are your views on this?

15 Leng July 10, 2008 at 11:25 am

18 Jill - GlossyVeneer July 10, 2008 at 11:56 am

I’m impressed with how you’ve maintained balance so well this summer, nice work!

I’ll be arriving in SF on the 17th. Maybe I’ll run into you at BlogHer. I’m interested in seeing what “Kath Eats” with the conference food. I’m hoping there are some healthful options!

19 BethT July 10, 2008 at 12:04 pm

Jimmi – sadly, no Pinkberry in San Francisco! A lot of knockoffs, but not the real deal.

20 BethT July 10, 2008 at 12:14 pm

Also, Kath and blog readers – has anyone seen/tried the new yogurt from Brown Cow that has whole grains IN the yogurt?

It is so different and tasty!

21 Fitnessista July 10, 2008 at 12:21 pm

congrats on being finished with summer school! great idea on the smoothie- i’ve never put oatmeal in one before… gonna have to try that :)

22 Soo July 10, 2008 at 12:56 pm

Red Mango is the REAL Pinkberry. Pinkberry is a knock-off.

23 Liz July 10, 2008 at 1:00 pm

hrm question! mine started giving me readings in the 200s last night. is it broken? needing a new battery? thanks!

24 Gena July 10, 2008 at 1:23 pm

Congrats, m’dear!

25 Clara July 10, 2008 at 2:08 pm

Kath – CONGRATULATIONS. That is so awesome. It must feel so fantastic to be done!! Thanks for sharing with us how you kept so organized and healthy despite your insane schedule. You are SUCH an inspiration 😀

I’m pretty excited about school-related stuff right now too, ’cause I just got back my results for the two AP Courses I took last year in my senior year of high school and I passed both of them! So yay for doing well in school hehe :) :)

I so wish I lived in San Fran! I’m up in northern Cali now. But have a great time visiting the west coast – can’t wait to read about it!!

Have a fantastic day!

26 Betsy July 10, 2008 at 2:34 pm

congrats on that! i got tired just reading about your insane schedule.

i want to go to san fran. i’m sick of the east coast right now.

27 pepper July 10, 2008 at 2:44 pm

Congrats! You probably have a ton of ideas for San Francisco. I was born and raised here, so I thought I’d throw in my unsolicited foodie recommendations for the Ferry Plaza Market – lots of gourmet food shops/bakeries/local cheeseries(?). And Tartine in the Mission for dessert. Not too original I know, but there’s a reason everyone raves about them. If you’re more adventurous, head to the Japan Center for shopping/eating, at Fillmore & Geary. It’s my favorite place to take visitors.

28 Little Black Dress July 10, 2008 at 3:16 pm

Hooray for you! Congrats!

29 lexi July 10, 2008 at 3:31 pm

this comment was left on my blog and im kinda creeped my out, the last time i got a comment like this i deleted my blog, but this time i dont want to because its helping me, but now im offically scared!

I am also a 15 year old vegan. We are alike except for the part where I am a guy and you are a girl. It’s hard to find a 15 year old vegan to date. Would you want to go out sometime? I live in Plano, Texas. What is your address?

any advice on what i could/should do!? thanks!

30 BethT July 10, 2008 at 3:39 pm

Lexi, either don’t reply or say no thanks! Easy as that. I would just be careful and not reveal too much personal info.

31 Kate July 10, 2008 at 3:41 pm

lexi – don’t sweat it, just don’t respond.

32 Foodexplorer July 10, 2008 at 3:52 pm

Hi Kath,

You mentioned that you felt like you were eating more lately… Did you hop on the scale to see where things stand and/or start counting calories again, or are you trying to do it all by how you feel and how your clothes fit?

33 Hil July 10, 2008 at 4:01 pm

Hi KrisT,

My husband and I have both used South Beach as a “kickstart” device and were very pleased with the results. Phase 1 was always a great cravings buster for me, and my husband, who had a bit more weight to lose than I did, lost almost 10 pounds the first two weeks. (Life is not fair.) If you do go with South Beach, eat LOTS of veggies and beans on Phase 1 and eat ALL of the snacks the book recommends. If your body starts to feel unhappy, switch to Phase 2.

I’ve transitioned away from using the diet rules and toward just eating a diet of whole foods that feels good to my body, but I still find that eating lower glycemic index foods with low saturated fat content is helpful with managing my appetite and weight.

My email address is listed on my blog…feel free to email me if you have questions.

Kath–congrats on being done and on keeping up with your workout schedule so well! I always slack off with exercise during finals.

34 mh July 10, 2008 at 4:03 pm

sorry I missed your comment the other day!! I’m starting law school this august and getting married next summer ’09 so I’ll have some time to adjust before! haha! any tips or advice for school or balancing law school and marriage? thanks!

35 Becca A July 10, 2008 at 4:08 pm

Congrats on finishing summer school! It seems like you just started…the summer is going by too fast!

36 Hil July 10, 2008 at 4:36 pm

MH–I’m a married law student, too. My best advice is to work your butt off during the mornings and afternoons and try not to bring work home with you unless you have to. Always eat dinner together. If you manage your time well and focus, law school can usually be treated like an 8 to 5 job. The temptation will be to let school eat your life. But having a life is important, and don’t let your scary gunner classmates convince you otherwise. :-)

37 Kath July 10, 2008 at 4:41 pm

Suzanne ,
Leaving on Wednesday, will be blogging!

Yes, torture :) We’re getting back lots of old tests and stuff – and some of the class is taking the 5th optional test (I’m choosing to drop that one since my other grades aren’t bad).

Kate ,
Sounds like a cool book! Now that I have some time on my hands, I’ll have to go to B&N and check it out.

krisT ,
I’m not a fan of South Beach at all. It deprives your body of what it runs on: carbohydrates. If you just focus on whole foods, you can eat whatever food groups you want. Perhaps give calorie counting a try if it suits you to check that you’re not eating too much for weight loss. And get as much exercise as you can!

Christy G,
Hi!! We need to get together – the move is coming up and I owe you your textbooks!

Jill – GlossyVeneer,
You know what I look like!! I’ll keep my eye out for Jill nametags :)

BethT ,
I had some brand of yogurt with grains it in once (forgot the kind). It was good, but not as good as plain yogurt with a full cup of cereal in it for the same calories :)

Liz ,
Mine does that occasionally when I’m warming up and it hasn’t gotten a good connection to my sweaty chest yet! If it consistently does it, send it back to the manufacturer.

pepper ,
Thanks for the recs!

Foodexplorer ,
I know I was eating more because I was there when I ate more! But in terms of keeping track, I can basically look at my stomach and tell if I’ve gained a little or not. It’s all about my belly button, weird I know. I think I’ve recovered now though. It could have just been water weight, but since I knew I was snacking more, I had to assume it was real weight so as not to put on more.

38 Bigelow Tea July 14, 2008 at 4:16 pm

Your smoothie looks delicious. Here is something similar, which incorporates tea: Green Tea Fruit Medley Smoothie

1 cup water
3 Bigelow® Green Tea Bags (can use any flavored green tea)
1 cup fresh berries, choose from raspberries, blueberries,or strawberries
¼ cup pineapple juice
½ cup vanilla yogurt
½ cup ice cubes

Yield: Makes 4 – 6 oz drinks. Prep time: 5 minutes.

Prepare tea by steeping 3 Bigelow® Green Tea Bags in 1 cup of boiling water for 5 minutes.. Squeeze out bags and discard.
Combine tea and remaining ingredients in blender and blend until smooth.

My husband and I are vacationing in SF right now.
We are from Los Angeles. Make sure you try MILLENIUM (gourmet vegan), Herbivore (vegan) and the Ferry Building. We so love SF. Hope you have as much fun as we have been having.
