Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!! One might expect to be frigid outdoors this time of year, but not under a layer of two quilts! When I went up to bed last night around 11 I couldn’t fall asleep because parts of me were so cold. Matt and I were like two peas in a pod but my outer shell was still iced. So I sleepily retrieved the down comforter from the hall closet and was much happier till morning.
I am now all packaged up in my organic cotton robe that Quaker sent me last year
Mmmmmmmmmmmm!!!
Today’s oat blend:
- 1/3 cup oats, milk, water, pinch salt
- 1 medium banana (from the airport!)
- 1/2 tbsp chia seeds
- 1 tbsp raisins
- Drizzled plum jam
- Costco PB
To make the jam drizzly, I put it in a tiny bowl and microwaved it for 10 seconds.
Coffee!!!
Highlander Grog and Spring Blend Decaf mixed
I am simultaneously working on about 3 computer projects (NERD KERF Episode 4 is uploading soon) and in a little bit I’m walking to the grocery store for green things and then exercising. Thankfully this week isn’t super pressed with school work so I have time to space my list out.
Happy Monday Humpday!

It’s been shockingly cold where I live too. The only thing that can get me out of bed in the mornings is the thought of hot oats and a hot shower!
Never thought to microwave jam!! It looks delish! What kind of camera do you use Kath? Your pictures are always amazing!
I’m in Colorado for business right now and I woke up to sleet! Yuck! Definitely a tea and oatmeal kind of a morning
It is so hard to get the temp right this time of year! Last week in Boston I was freezing in my apartment, this week I am nearly sweating!
I love mixing pb w/jam then microwaving it. Yummy, melty, and gooey…what more can you ask for?
It is freezing here too in the morning and evening..but today is supposed to read 72!
The weather has been absolutely bizarre. I either wake up freezing or sweating… what happened to fall?
Here it’s finally starting to get colder but not too much. I don’t think we could handle the kind of cold you do. Oh well, different countries. :p
That oatmeal looks fabulous.
I am wearing wool socks and fuzzy boots! I don’t enjoy the cold very much but I am staying warm
it is that time of year when it starts to get cold again!
love microwaving stuff for a lil bit!
great breakfast
jenna
I’m really cold, too. The highs and lows are so extreme here right now, 30′s overnight and almost 80 in the day. Crazy!
Hopfully your oats and coffee warmed you up! We are actually supposed to have our first nice day here in awhile! It’s been in the low 40s high 30s at night!
i have a down comforter-they keep you super warm! Try one and you’ll never go back… so cozy
)
(so warm i’m trying to stay in bed way too long…
i was freezing last night, too! Glad you’re back and settled in after the trip
Oh my gosh – we’ve had a warmup here the past week – but I was just like you last week! A little ice pick in bed! My husband and I had to spoon all night to keep warm!
I feel your pain! I actually slept with a hat on! LOL, It’s supposed to be in the upper 70′s today though, thank goodness.
Have a good day
Plum jam sounds so unique and delicious. Happy wednesday!
Just wanted to say Congratulations on the bakery! I missed getting to your posts until now.
Also your oats look so good this morning!
Have a great day!
pb&j oatmeal just might be the best cold-morning breakfast (although pumpkin oats are a close second in my books)
Mmm what a delicious breakfast! Looks like the perfect thing for a chilly morning!
I wish we had some cool weather like that here!!
ahh you’re lucky that your school week is calm!! I’m getting ready for test 2 out of 3 at the moment!! yikes!
that oatmeal looks perfect for cold weather! congrats on the big news, how exciting!!
MMMmmm coffee and oatmeal, that is what I am eating as we speak. Although you reminded me that I wanted to put peach jam in mine and didn’t. Oh well there’s always tomorrow.
Oooo, Drizzly jam sounds like a great idea!
I hate when my feet are freezing in bed. I can’t sleep with socks but I don’t like cold feet. Such a perdicament. I usually pile an extra blanket on them (or a fluffy dog will lay on them
)
Glad you have a relaxing week after your super busy trip.
Thanks goodness the weather is finally warming up!
I didn’t want to miss fall
Your coffee always looks so good!!!
Just saw your news! Congratulations!!!!!!! So excited for you two.
Robes make the perfect solution for really cold nights!
Looks like a great breakfast!
Have a nice day!
Yum! Do you like the jam? I need to try it on something other that toast…
I’ll try to send the gorgeous weather we’ve been having here in the midwest your way. It was freezing here last week, but this week so far has been perfect fall weather!
CONGRATS ON THE BAKERY! that is sooo exciting, such a fun adventure and it will be so intersting to see where life takes you this next year!!!
Awesome news about the bakery. I can not wait til you guys open up so that I can eat some of the yummy bread. There really is nothing like Great Harvest here & it is going to be such a treat to finally have it here. I have to get my fix when I go to Greensboro.
A down comforter dounds wonderful, I love being under a big pile of blankets.
You guys must be on cloud nine!! I know I already congratulated, but it’s just so cool!
I love sleeping in a cold house! I wake up so much more rested.
Congrats again! Charlottesville is such a cool town and I know the two of you are going to be amazing bakery owners!
Yum! Great idea about drizzling jam on oatmeal! Congrats again on the future baking business, can’t wait to hear all about it!
Did somebody say “peas in a pod?”
Love the microwaved jam! I nuke peanut butter sometimes when I want it all soft and smooshy.
I just came across your blog and really enjoy it- I will be visiting again.
Your oatmeal looks SO GOOD! It’s so great to get creative with oatmeal, it’s a blank canvas!
Take care,
Jenny
Oh my goodness!! Such gorgeous pictures
I just want to frame them. Everything looks amazing Kath. What a great camera and eye you have!!

I pulled out my Quaker robe the other day too! No finer luxury than curling up in the robe with a bowl of oats and french-pressed coffee
I can’t wait until the next Nerd Kerf!!!! I’m loving it! I had no clue about the potential of gmail and now I’m just in love with the whole thing!
Lucky! I have an exam and 2 tests! Booooo
Enjoy your exercise and green shopping
I am so jealous of your French press coffee. You get such a lovely froth on top. I have tried it so many times, I don’t get it! Just wondering do you have any trick?
Perfect way to start out the morning. Snuggling up in a cozy robe with oatmeal sounds so relaxing!
Megan,
Rebel XSI
Beth,
LOVE it! Esp. the consistency!
Jenny,
Thanks and welcome!
Priyanka,
Heating the milk beforehand makes a big difference.
Kath
Kath,
I rarely comment, but absolutely love your blog. I get a lot of meal ideas from you!
A question though–I really want a french press, but I’ve read that because french press coffee doesn’t use a filter, some of the chemical compounds that remain in the coffee can raise LDL cholesterol levels. Have you heard of this? thoughts?
Kath, your life looks like a gourmet cookbook. Your food could seriously walk the runways of Milan. Superfood Supermodels! I’d much rather see that than all of the waifs in impossibly expensive clothing, ha.
Caroline,
My personal opinion is that people without high LDL cholesterol need not worry about this. I really can’t imagine that it has that large of an impact.
Kath
i hate when i’m cold while i sleep!!! but i think heat is worse for me.
