Hot Cross Buns

December 30, 2009

The Baker got up extra early to bake off fresh rolls for breakfast for everyone with the pizza dough leftovers

IMG_2594 (640x427)

I had mine topped with butter and jam. So doughy, so delicious.

IMG_2586 (640x427)

A hard boiled egg for some protein. Eggs are a near perfect food!

Two cups of joe

I prefer one-bowl breakfasts, but sometimes I really enjoy a "part of this complete breakfast" plate. All that’s missing are the cartoons!

We’re digesting, maybe going for a short walk/run, and taking the 12:30 ferry to Wilmington to have lunch with blog reader Holly. Justin and Amanda are arriving this evening!

they look so doughy and delicious! So lucky to have matt as your personal baker!! :)

2 Madeline @ Greens and Jeans December 30, 2009 at 9:38 am

I agree with you on the whole bowl thing, but every once in awhile a hodge podge is pretty perfect, especially when you have rolls fresh out of the oven! Can’t beat that!

3 Kailey December 30, 2009 at 9:43 am

ahh those freshly baked rolls look amazing !! a little butter goes a long way :)

4 Jessica @ How Sweet It Is December 30, 2009 at 9:43 am

What a sweet hubby to bake! I don’t think my husband would know what to do with flour or sugar. :)

5 Shannon (The Daily Balance) December 30, 2009 at 9:46 am

Have a wonderful afternoon 😉

OH. MY. GOODNESS! Those look AMAZING! If Matt wants to move into my apartment and become my baker, that would be 100% okay with me. Haha.

Have a great day Kath!

The rolls look amazing!

22 brandi December 30, 2009 at 10:37 am

sounds like a fun day ahead :)

fresh rolls are the best! I got some sourdough starter from my father in law – so excited about it! We made sourdough pancakes, biscuits, and bread last weekend and they were all amazing.

23 lynn @ the actors diet December 30, 2009 at 10:39 am

your hub’s the best.

24 Jenn (www. ) December 30, 2009 at 10:42 am

27 zestycook December 30, 2009 at 11:12 am

Those rolls look delicious! Those are my two fav toppings on homemade rolls too! Slightly jealous over here.

28 theemptynutjar December 30, 2009 at 11:12 am

I love fresh rolls! Your husband is so nice :)

31 Lauren December 30, 2009 at 11:16 am

This is seriously the most perfect looking breakfast ever; I could eat that exact plate every single morning!

32 stephanie December 30, 2009 at 11:38 am

hi kath-
Your vacation looks fabulous! Up here in DC it has been waay too cold and snowy for outdoor runs, I’m beginning to feel like a hamster with all the treadmill time I’m logging.
Two questions:
1) When you and Matt move to Charlottesville, i assume he’ll be opening a bakery there? Do you know where it will be located exactly?
2) Do you have any upcoming trips to Cville planned? I’m returning next week to start my final semester at UVA :( If you do, PLEASE make sure you hit up Feast (a gourmet grocery store/cafe- their sandwiches are to die for and they use the best ingredients) and Bikram Yoga Charlottesville!

33 Kath December 30, 2009 at 11:32 pm

No idea where the bakery will be yet. We’re going to start looking for locations after the new year, which will probably include a visit. I might not be able to make it with my work schedule, but Matt will be up for sure. I’m hoping to go too if I can squeeze it in!

34 Karla December 30, 2009 at 11:39 am

I love how colorful your breakfast looks! Berries are delicious and the buns look so perfect!

35 amber December 30, 2009 at 11:39 am

LOL at part of this complete breakfast!

36 Heather @ The Joyful Kitchen December 30, 2009 at 11:40 am

What a fantastic breakfast! I’d love some of those rolls really any time of day :) Eggs are such a great way to squeeze in some protein, too!

37 mary ann December 30, 2009 at 11:50 am

that is pretty much my ideal breakfast. I love my oats, but I feel so brittish when I eat a biscuit, roll or crumpet with a hard/soft boiled egg. Light but nourishing…. looove it!

38 Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) December 30, 2009 at 11:57 am

Lovely breakfast! 😀 Fresh rolls with jam is about as good as it gets!

39 Carolyn December 30, 2009 at 12:11 pm

I like a full plate. Makes me feel full!

40 Ashley December 30, 2009 at 12:18 pm

Those rolls look like PERfection!

41 Stef December 30, 2009 at 12:37 pm

Rolls from leftover pizza dough is a genius idea! Have a great day!

42 Cynthia (It All Changes) December 30, 2009 at 12:41 pm

Full plate breakfasts are fun for a change sometimes.

43 Jenny December 30, 2009 at 12:54 pm

Mmm I wish I lived with a baker! Those rolls looks so good even through the screen :)

44 Erin @ Big Girl Eats December 30, 2009 at 12:56 pm

Holy moly, those rolls looks AMAZING! I need to marry a baker. 😉

45 Penny December 30, 2009 at 2:15 pm

Fresh baked bread is one of the greatest things ever.

46 Megan December 30, 2009 at 2:35 pm

Hope you had a great time in Wilmington – I grew up and live in ILM, it is a fun town (but definitely a little cold today)!

47 Susan December 30, 2009 at 2:35 pm

Those berries look scrumptious! How nice of your hubby to bake some bread for you all – hot outta da oven is the best!

48 Jessica @ JJsVinBlanc December 30, 2009 at 2:38 pm

Now you’ve got me craving warm bread with butter and jelly. Good thing I’m making hot corn bread tonight that I can slather up!

49 Runeatrepeat December 30, 2009 at 4:13 pm

Amazing run!!!

50 Erin December 30, 2009 at 4:26 pm

I am forever jealous that you married that baker. You are set with bread for life.

Totally awesome.

51 Heather @ Get Healthy With Heather December 30, 2009 at 4:41 pm

What a yummy looking breakfast! I love those kinds with family and friends over.

52 Paige(Running Around Normal) December 30, 2009 at 4:54 pm

Those buns look amazing!! The Baker is very talented. Have a fun run!

53 Katie December 30, 2009 at 5:33 pm

Wow. You are lucky to have someone to make you fresh bread before you even get up in the morning!! I am jealous. The smell alone would be enough to get me up and out of bed!

54 Jenni December 30, 2009 at 5:39 pm

why have you only been posting twice a day for like the past week?? just wondering because i am a faithful reader and have been missing the 3 a day posts! I understand you are probably busy though!!!

55 Kath December 30, 2009 at 11:33 pm

‘Cause I’ve been on vacation!! 2 a day is a lot more manageable when I’m not at a desk all day.

56 Becky December 30, 2009 at 6:36 pm

Whenever I don’t have oats for breakfast I kind of feel disappointed afterward. Kind of like I am cheating on my good old favorite:) Cooking Light has a little blurb on oats and toppings this month that you will have to read!

Enjoy the vacation, or rather, continue to enjoy!

57 Paula December 30, 2009 at 6:37 pm

breakfast rolls…Lucky! Breakfast looks perfect!

58 Sarena December 30, 2009 at 7:15 pm

Great looking breakfast! I love playing with leftover pizza dough. I made cinnamon rolls a couple of weeks ago with the leftover dough in the fridge! So easy and so good! Have fun with your friends!

59 April December 30, 2009 at 8:17 pm

Do you feel it’s easier for you to run such long (in my opinon) distances because you played soccer? Or when you started, did you have to spend more time to build yourself up? And if you did, about how long did it take for the running to start getting easy? Thank you!

Love your blog! Read every day!

60 Kath December 30, 2009 at 11:35 pm

I am of the mind-set (ironically) that running is mostly mental. I knew I’d have no problem jumping from 5 to 6 miles before I even did it. Or 6 to 7. And I started the same way with 3-4 and 4-5. You can go out there and run as far as you want if you wanted to (although your body might not be primed and ready to handle it without injury long-term). So just know you can do it. There’s no shame in stopping to walk some if that helps.

61 Jil December 30, 2009 at 8:49 pm

The plate looks delicious! and is a much healthier “part of this complete breakfast” than …say Lucky Charms. haha Those buns … (okay, I’m five and just giggled a little )… look phenomenal!!

62 Mae December 30, 2009 at 9:07 pm

Kath, you and your husband win the “Best leftover users of 2009” award! You inspire others to think past wasting leftover dinners, fruits, veggies, and even dough to creat new experiences. Wonderful!

63 Kath December 30, 2009 at 11:35 pm

Ha – thanks!

64 Katie December 30, 2009 at 9:20 pm

Those rolls look crusty and yummy!

Hope you’re having fun.

Happy Day,

65 Meredith (Pursuing Balance) December 30, 2009 at 9:48 pm

Gorgeous breakfast you’ve got there!

66 Crystle December 31, 2009 at 9:15 am

From far away, I thought those hot cross buns were russet potatoes!
Your breakfast looks quite elegant. I just had breakfast, but your pictures are making me hungry again :o)

67 Good Taste. Healthy Me December 31, 2009 at 3:26 pm

This breakfast looks absolutely amazing! This would be my perfect breakfast! That fruit looks perfect. I wish fruit was good up here all year round. It’s all gross in the store. :(

68 Karalea January 1, 2010 at 10:05 am

Oh, my goodness…you are reading “The Shell Seekers” by Rosamunde Pilcher. It is by far one of the best books I’ve ever read. Enjoy! :-)
