Hatha Massage

March 5, 2009

Hello second day soreness! Sculpt class caught up with me today. I was going to skip yoga this AM but then I remembered Caitlin’s All Or Nothing post yesterday and I decided to do some Gentle Hatha I yoga – just for 20 minutes. Perfecto! It was really like a quick massage for my muscles and I feel loads better. Since I upgraded my yoga from 20 minutes to 45 minutes I’ve definitely had the “20 minutes isn’t worth it” mentality. What’s up with that!? 20 minutes is definitely worth it.

Matt brought home this 9 Grain Hot Cereal the other day, so I gave it a try. He said it was heavier on the oat bran than the other 8 grains

IMG_2515 (1024x768)

IMG_2520 (1024x768)

Today’s Blend:

  • 1/3 cup hot grain cereal, 2/3 cup water, 1/3 cup vanilla soy milk, 1/2 large banana, splash vanilla, pinch salt
  • 1 fig + 1 date
  • Sprinkle coconut
  • Sprinkle coconut butter
  • 1/6 ish Koka Moka ProBar
  • Spoonful Naturally More
  • Second spoonful TJ’s PB (couldn’t resist ;) )
I liked the chewy bits in the hot cereal – probably millet!? But overall, I think oat bran and multigrain cereals have kind of a chalky taste? I couldn’t really put my finger…er..tongue on the flavor, but it’s not the sweet, sticky, creaminess of old fashioned oatmeal that I love so much. This was fun for a change, but not my very favorite.

Decided on tea this morning. Yerba Mate Dark Roast, which I like a lot with soy milk.

Hope your neck of the woods is getting warmer…

Have a lovely Thursday!

yay im glad you could drop the all or nothing attitude! this is really something i’ve struggled with in the past, but i’m definitely improving my attitude about it. seriously, 20 minutes of yoga (or 2.5 miles of running, like me last night) is better than no activity at all!

YAY kath!

Agreed that 20 minutes of yoga is totally worth it! I was sick last week, and at the end had the sore joints, and a few minutes of gentle yoga really helped work out my pain.

I love cooking multi-grain hot cereal with apple juice instead of water, it helps with that bland flavor!

Great looking breakfast! I’ve found that the multi-grain hot cereals are significantly more filling/satisfying than the single grain ones. It might be all in my head, but still… Have you found that at all?

Yumm – Yerba Mate! I love that tea. My tastebuds can’t take it alone yet, but with soymilk, it’s divine!

I need to try oat bran as a breakfast cereal. How does the volume compare with that of oatmeal?

I totally had the same problem with going down to 20-minute yoga sessions. But it’s true: something is better than nothing.

I am so excited it is supposed to be warming up here! 70′s by the weekend. I am not sure if I believe it though b/c it’s only 25 degrees right now!

I think it is so cool how get to try so many of the Great Harvest products since your hubby works there! Definite job perk for him and you!

Have you tried Bob’s Red Mill Might Tasty Hot Cereal? I’m a big fan — it’s gluten-free and made from brown rice, corn, and sorghum. I love the texture and it’s filling but not heavy. I have mine with almond meal, flaxseed, agave nectar, and vanilla extract.

I went through the same thing this morning, too. I didn’t wake up early enough to do my full download, but I did a shorter one anyways. I don’t know where the “all or nothing” comes from, but it sure is frustrating.

Hi Kath!! I took my first yoga class last night since my college days…over a year ago (thanks to your inspiration)!! I don’t know if this is normal, but my upper back (between the shoulder blades) are absolutely KILLING ME. They aren’t sore per se, but I can’t seem to straighten my back fully without feeling strain and discomfort. Do downward dogs do that to you for newbies?? I’d REALLLY love to know if this is ok or I should look into it.

Here’s a random oatmeal fact for you. A 2005 study at Brigham Young University found that quick-cooking rolled oats that had been stored 28 years in sealed containers were rated “acceptable in an emergency” in taste and quality by three-fourths of the respondents in a taste test. Good to know! ;)

Even just 5 mins. of Yoga is worth it personally! It takes practucally no time to start feeling some of the benefits and stress reduction. I love it. I too feel pressure to do long amounts of time, but it really isn’t about the time, right?

It is warming up here!!! For the next several days…going to be 11C tomorrow!

Good for you for doing the 20 minutes of yoga! I have the same issue where I feel like if I don’t dedicate a ton of time to it that it doesn’t count. I have to remember that every little bit does something.

That breakfast looks delicious!

Love that you were able to break that mindset this morning. I often start thinking that way once I take my workouts to the next level. For example, when training for a half-marathon, a 3 or 4 mile run often seemed pointless and I’d feel bad for not running further/longer. Just because we CAN do more, doesn’t mean we HAVE to. The idea of “good enough” is something I’m continuously struggling to accept!

I add 1 T. or 2 of the 10 grain to my oats–it’s yummy! Or try half and half.

This is for Amanda in Pittsburgh who posted last night about where to find kale. I live in Pittsburgh too and I can usually find it at Giant Eagle. I’ve seen it at the one on Centre Ave. in Shadyside (Market District) in actually bags like you would find lettuce. At my local Giant Eagle, I’ve found in the produce section with all the unpackaged veggies. The shelves are usually marked well. However, it is hit or miss with the kale. One time I went to buy it and it was so wilted! I couldn’t believe they still had it on display. Whole foods might have it too but I’m not sure. I haven’t been there since last fall! Good luck on your quest for kale! Katy

I’ve never had figs or dates in my oats… seriously need to try that!

I wrote about the all or nothing mindset when it comes to diets the other day. I used to get stuck in that mentality!

20 minutes of yoga is so worth it! I’ve been doing 20 mins each night this week and I feel like I sleep so much better!

Hi Kath,
I noticed you don’t really drink milk, except for when you make your oats. I usually have at least two cups of 1% milk everyday. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks!

Reply

52 Kath March 5, 2009 at 2:59 pm

Mara @ What’s For Dinner,
This held me over really well, so maybe? It makes sense because oat bran is more fiber and less starch so it would probably take a little longer to digest.

Hallie ,
The volume was very comparable to oats. I used 1/3 a cup and I’m not sure what the serving size is for the multigrain (sometimes 1/3 cup is the same nutritionally as 1/2 cup oats).

Hadley ,
I have not tried that kind, but sounds good!

Julie ,
Very good to know!

Michelle ,
I don’t know how normal it is, but I went through a similar “ripped upper back” stage with yoga. I took it as a good sign that I was making progress!

TBW ,
I’ve seen that before – it is cool. But I kind of feel like it’s an invasion of privacy!

bobbi ,
Glad you liked the kale!

Meg ,
Brilliant to mix!! I will be doing that soon.

Sarah (lovINmytummy),
I do wait at the door like that :)

Jordan ,
Thanks for stopping by!

Chelsea ,
Hi!! *Funny CK waving smiley*

Jenny ,
I’ve always preferred to chew my calories, but milk is 100% good for ya! If you like it, drink away. I’d rather have it with cereal or in things, but I do like it plain.

Kath
