Half and Half

Can you guess what I had for breakfast?

IMG_2746 (640x427)

Last night is your hint…

IMG_2744 (640x427)

Autumn?

IMG_2739 (640x427)

Root Stoup Oats!

IMG_2745 (640x427)

As I was eating my stoup last night I thought This would make a good breakfast. Had there been garlic or onion involved, I never would have combined them, but it was mild enough and sweet to the taste that I thought it would be good in oats.

I was only half right. It was too "dinnery" for breakfast. It didn’t taste bad, but it was a bit too savory for me first thing in the AM. It was no pumpkin!

The combo:

IMG_2743 (640x427)

Sure was filling though!

IMG_2749 (640x427)

I opened my last Marley Coffee packet today: Jammin Java: Bold Full City Roast.

IMG_2727 (640x427)

IMG_2728 (640x427)

I store my freshly ground coffee batches in tupperwares in the freezer door with the label stuck on top:

Half Jammin’, half decaf, splash of half and half

Real Food For You?

I am all caught up on my Real Food Consultations que, so if you were holding off, now’s your chance :)

Beauty Tests

Remember the Mary Kay products I received to sample? Here’s an update:

IMG_1725 (640x480)

The Timewise has been fun to use. My favorite part is the smell of the day solution serum – it’s like buttercream icing! I also have been pleasantly pleased with the absorbance time. My other facial lotion (Neutrogena) used to take a long time to soak in and with the Timewise my face is ready for make up in less than 5 minutes. On the wrinkle fine line front, I haven’t really noticed any changes. I’ll keep checking though!

IMG_1726 (640x480)

LOVING the body washes. I am a bar soap girl and have really enjoyed the scents of these. I’m not quite sure how to use the scrubs – no part of my body is really that rough? But I still use it maybe once a week simply for the smell :)

IMG_1724 (640x480)

The tinted moisturizers are fun. Love the colors, but they have been drying my lips out a bit after a while so I’ve been putting gloss on top. I’d give them a B+.

IMG_1723 (640x480)

I’ve worn the eye shadow in this guy a few times and liked it, but not as much as my Cover Girl sparkly one. The Mary Kay shadow is quite…..potent? The bronzer is a bit hard to apply with that tiny brush so I’ve been using my bigger make-up brush, and like it when I use that.

Sonic Boom

On to another fun sample – something I’ve wanted for YEARS –

A sonic toothbrush!!!

IMG_2645 (640x427)

Waterpik asked me to try their Sensonic Professional Toothbrush out and I was more than excited. My sister has had a sonic toothbrush for years and swears by them. My dentist has told me I need one too but I’ve been too lazy to save up $80+ for a toothbrush when I can get one for $1.99 that should do the trick of plaque removal! I had a sonic one on my birthday/Christmas list, but now I can take it back off :) I brush + floss frequently, but I am not that great of a brusher in terms of quality. Hopefully this will do it for me!

So here’s me testing it out… shicha shicha (*brushing sounds*)

IMG_2647 (640x427)

It vibrates! There are two speeds. I put it on the lower one because the higher one is ca-razy fast + wild! I was surprised that it does not have any circular features that I’ve seen on the other sonic toothbrushes, however, my teeth felt INCREDIBLY clean afterwards. Just like I’d been to the dentist.

Loved that it stutters every 30 seconds to remind you to move to another quadrant and ends after 2 minutes. I definitely do not currently brush long enough or spend enough time in each quadrant, so this is really going to improve my brushing.

There is also this "interdental" attachment, that I think is used to stimulate the gums. I LOVE having my gums massaged (especially when the dental hygienist pokes them with the prodder), I think because it stimulates blood flow or something, so this felt really good on my gums and between my teeth. Not sure I will use it daily, but at least when I want a good time ;)

IMG_2648 (640x427)

Cons:

  • Replacement heads are $5 each, but assuming this pays off in good dental health, that’s not too bad.
  • It’s a $79 investment (and Amazon and Costco have them) but from what I’ve heard that’s on the lower end of the higher quality sonic brushes
  • Hard for traveling. I might just bring my old fashioned when I travel. But that’s not really a reflection of the company, just sonics in general.

No comment on how long the batteries hold without a charge because I’ve only used it for a few days.

IMG_2643 (640x427)

So that’s that!

***

I considered running first thing today but I know I always have more energy around 11AM so since I am lucky to have the flexibility, I put it off till later. My day is wide open, but I do have a lot to do in anticipation of a really busy next week, so it won’t be a free day by far. Tomorrow will be though! I’ve got a date with Matt to watch The Office at lunchtime!

I had a feeling you’d have that for breakfast today :) I almost always have squash in my oats if there’s leftovers from the night before. Have a great Friday!

Just a note, if you buy your sonic toothbrush directly from your dentist you can use your flexible spending or HSA generally!

I’d love a sonic, they just are kind of a boring purchase so I’ve never invested in one, might put it on the list though!

Interesting idea to add squash to your oats! I added shredded apple to mine this morning – that was a new one for me.

I used to use my sonicare toothbrush daily – I got too lazy to make sure it was always charged – my bathroom only has one electrical outlet! I have been thinking I need to bring it back though – maybe this weekend I will charge it up.

My husband swears by his sonic care toothbrush too! I’m too cheap to get one though, but recently I’ve gotten my first cavities! Fillings are expensive! I may need to rethink my cheapness….

I have used an SonicCare for probably 5 years. I think the cost is totally worth it. Just think of the cost of one uncovered cavity or a root canal and suddenly $5 replacements aren’t so bad.

I usually do travel with a normal toothbrush b/c it never fails that the battery runs out at some point.

Also, you really don’t need to freeze your coffee. It kills a lot of the good flavor.

I saw a couple comments where people mentioned needing 2 separate electric brushes for husband and wife…

My wife and I share the base, but have our own brush heads. This works great. We keep it on the charger base, but even when we go on vacation, it keeps its charge for a long time.

I wish the replacement heads we use were only $5… ours cost about $15 each! BUT, I still love my SonicCare!

I recieved my Sonicare toothbrush as a gift years ago and I’ve never turned back. I love it! My teeth never feel as clean when I use a regular tooth brush. I travel with mine as well – I suppose lugging around the huge toothbrush and charger is a bit of a pain, but I’m pretty attached to mine.

As far as the charge is concerned, my brush will usually stay charged less than a day off the battery (although mine is years old), hense always having to travel with the charger, which is kind of annoying. Maybe some longer lasting battery life is something to think about Sonicare makers!

What an AWESOME product to review – I would LOVE that! When I started to really focus on getting healthy in early 2008 I added dental hygiene to my list of things to improve. Always a regular brusher but the flossing could have been better. I floss religiously every night now and my teeth and gums have never felt better. Please report back in a few weeks to let us know if you’ve really noticed a difference from the Sonic! Inquiring minds (and teeth) need to know! ;)

Hi Kath! I was a very avid reader of your blog when you first started and recently discovered u again and have been following your posts. Since I first started reading, I have used your oatmeal and oatmeal pancake recipes weekly. As for the comment above about “blogging with intergrity”…I think that you do a very good job with illustrating an OVERALL healthy lifestyle which includes healthy eating, exercise and hygiene. One component of this equation does NOT a healthy person make. And I never feel as if you are PUSHING products on anyone. I have seen you say on numerous occasions that you didn’t like something…it doesn’t mean that I won’t like it, but you are a blogger not a robot and thus, we tune in to hear your opinion. After all, just because you don’t like onions doesn’t mean I don’t add them to recipes because I love em. Anyhoo, thanks a bunch for this blog. It’s inspirational, entertaining, informative and fun. Glad I got hooked again :)

I missed The Office last night, too! Just shows how much blogging can take out of your day…

I tried oats with a blueberry chile sauce used on salmon the night before…it was terrible. Lesson learned: just because it has fruit in it, doesn’t mean it’ll be good in oats!

40 Susan September 18, 2009 at 11:05 am

Oooh, I like that the toothbrush tells you when to move around and stop! I know I don’t brush for long enough, so that would definitely help!

By the way, as a barista, I was taught not to keep coffee in the freezer, especially on the door, because condensation can build on it. Moisture (along with air and light) is the top thing that will ruin the freshness of your coffee. Sealed in an air tight container, in a dark and dry cupboard is best! :)

Man, I need to get on the fun oats bandwagon! I stick with the same peanut butter and banana combo and know that if I just branch out a little bit I’ll find an even better combo.

The sonic toothbrush seems great, but I agree that it’s expensive, good for a present though!

Reply

42 brittany September 18, 2009 at 11:39 am

I also learned today in class not to put ground coffee in the fridge because it takes away it’s freshness. I don’t drink it so I don’t know if that’s true but they did say it’s best to keep it in the cupboard.

The office will crack you up it was sooo funny last night!

As a long time reader of your blog, I have to say that I’m disappointed that it’s increasingly reading like an advertisement for various products. I realize that as a blogger you’re not held the same standards as newspapers when it comes to editorial content, but nonetheless, I find that mentions of the growing number of freebies you’re receiving compromises the integrity of these posts.

RE. Coffee: Someone totally told me to put it in there!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had no idea. Going to take it out now….

Lizzy,
On the Tribute page…probably the prosciutto + goat cheese combo. It was good, but I haven’t wanted to try it again…

Sam,
I’d send you the forms, you’d fill them out (a food dairy if you chose that package) and then I’d provide a huge PDF file of my feedback, diet intake recommendations, and more. It depends on the package!

confused,
Healthy teeth = healthy life. When I start reviewing twinkies and fast food, you can criticize.

Brittany,
Just skip them!! Many people like them. I do keep my integrity and only choose products that I think fit with my lifestyle goals (you’d be surprise by what I turn down..) and always give my honest opinion.

Sara,
I don’t even remember my combos, but I know I loved the dried raspberries and chia seeds.
