Good Carolina Morning

September 28, 2009

It’s FALL out there!!! Freezing cold and crisp. Yay!

Last night there was a murder in our yard. Something was screaming in horrible ways out there. Don’t rabbits scream? I hate to think of what it was. I checked the yard for a carcass but don’t see anything. It must have been in the woods. Scary.

I could have slept another hour until 8 (I didn’t go to bed until midnight!) but I got up with Matt to talk to him before he left for work. I didn’t have the energy to make oats and he was rushed, so we did yogurt bowls.

  • Container Oikos
  • 1/3 cup Mix My Granola from a new tube! This one has almonds, raspberries, goji berries and blueberries in the organic granola mix.
  • 1 banana (Matt got a bunch of ripe ones on sale yesterday so we have tons! I’ll have to freeze some)
  • 1 tbsp flax
  • 1 tbsp Fortnum and Mason raspberry preserves

French press to go! My new cup was very fun. I probably won’t use it daily because it requires more washing than a mug stuck in the dishwasher, but it will be really fun on some morning when I need coffee to go!

Instructions:

  1. 2 rounded spoonfuls coffee (one caf, one decaf for me)
  2. Pour hot water on (near boiling)
  3. Wait 4 minutes
  4. Press

I did get some grounds in my mouth on the last sip though :( Just an FYI for next time. I also poured my milk into the mouth spout and that worked perfectly.

I’ve got a ton to do today, including a visit to the Garden for the Hungry this afternoon, so these morning hours need to be super productive.

Sadly, rabbits do scream and it’s a pretty awful noise! On a happier note, I have a french press to go mug, and I actually add the milk in when I put in the grinds and it turns out great!

This fall weather is so perfect for outdoor running!! I’m lovin’ it! There was something screaming in your yard!?!?!?!? AHHHH!

I like the concept of a french press to go, but I am not sure I would ever use one. I would prefer to pour my coffee into a to go mug and not risk grounds in my mouth. Also, I know they need to be hand washed and wouldn’t have to wash two (one for me, one for the hubs). There are so many pieces!

Rabbits do scream :( My rabbit was attacked by my other rabbit and I was woken up by the rabbit screams! It was horrifying.

Hope the animal is okay!!

I have a Bodum travel press and while I love it, the strainer is NOT the best for keeping grounds out. I still use it regularly (it was a gift and if it’s not completely broke, then no need to fix it!) so I just strain my coffee into another cup with a sieve. Kind of defeats the purpose of a travel mug, but oh well.

Fall has finally arrived in Western North Carolina, too, it’s wonderful! Sorry about the scary screaming in the yard…that gives me the creeps!

Maybe it was cats…they can be pretty screamy and crazy sometimes…and really loud when they are mad.

It really can give you quite the startle though; being woken by loud shrieks…eek!

We have screaming squirrels in our neighborhood…they’re kinda creepy. I’ll have to check out matt’s post and show it to the fiance! He gets SO embarrassed when I have to take pictures of everything!

It may have been a screaming squirrel.
I like the idea of a French press to go, but I still think it’s too much work for me when I’m on the go.
Enjoy your day!

I have been thinking about getting a small french press for work and this looks like a great one. The coffee here is just terrible but sometimes a late morning or early afternoon pick me up is nice.

I can’t wait to read Matt’s post…I will have to get my hubby to read it as well! My hubby did such a great job taking photos for my blog and following me around doing my first sprint triathlon this weekend…I have to show him he’s not the only one!

Matt’s post was fun to read!

Love the idea of a french press to-go! The only thing I dislike about french presses is the cleanup.

How do you go about cleaning yours so that it’s not a complete disaster with coffee grounds everywhere?

I am one my second to go french press. I use it for those long flights of 10 hours or more. I mix some fresh grounds with sugar (european customs also checks it and lets me go on my way) then 2 hours before we land I fill it up with hot water and have some strong fresh coffee. The grounds do sometimes get in the way. Its great for backpacking as well.

A to-go french press is such a great idea! It would making running out of the door on my crazy early mornings a little easier :)

My vote is on a King Fisher (if you have them down by you) they scream bloody murder and that is just the sound they make. Whenever I hear them it makes my stomach knot and blood curdle.

shawna,
I currently dump them into the trash can, but my hope is to get a countertop compost this fall so I can start composting them. I hate being wasteful, but a dark early morning walk out to the back of our yard compost is kind of scary.

Ugh, rabbits do scream. We have a park behind my house, so I am tragically familiar with that sound, often followed by triumphant owl hooting.
Also, foxes scream when they’re huntin’ down a mate, and it sounds like a human. My mom called the police one time.

Hubs and I are heading to Upstate South Carolina this weekend for a wedding – hopefully the lovely fall-like weather will still be around! It is still hot as blazes here in Georgia! A note on screaming animals – maybe it was a few cats mating? Eric and I were awakened a couple of months ago to two cats mating outside our bedroom window. At first we thought it was a screaming child until he went outside with the flashlight and discovered two cats on a romantic date!

54 Tammy September 28, 2009 at 6:20 pm

Years ago, I heard a screaming noise like what you are describing, and I found out from a neighbor that (like Ann-Margaret suggested), it was cats mating. So no worries — there just may have been some love-making going on in your yard. LOL.
