May 9, 2010

Today can be summed up in one word: glorious!

I read my book (South of Broad) in bed for an hour next to Matt.

And then we went RUNNING in the sunshine!!

Yep, my leg is feeling much more normal on a regular basis so I decided to test it out again. I’m excited to report that I made it about 3.5 miles without any feeling or any pain in my leg (although I did aim to run slow and keep my stride short). I started to feel a little bit of twinging from 3.4 – 4.3 miles. No pain, just "feeling" it. I’m not all better, but I’m on the mend. Another week or rest and I’ll do another test. It feels great post-run, so that’s really good news too.

When we got home, we decided we should do some weeding in our yard since our realtor is coming to take some updated exterior photos.

I was getting hungry and was very thirsty so I had the second half of the ISO-5 coconut sports drink to tide me over. I really like these! The lemon/lime/pineapple flavors the best. And I like that they come in small bottles. One bottle is only 11 oz and 60 calories, I believe.

IMG_2414 (640x427)

I am very experienced at weeding. My dad used to make me weed ridiculous things when I was in high school as my "chores." One time I had to trim a bush with scissors!!

IMG_2417 (640x427)

Weeding your own yard is much more enjoyable. Especially if you’re trying to sell it!

IMG_2420 (640x427)

I also swept the driveway

IMG_2424 (640x427)

IMG_2426 (640x427)

IMG_2427 (640x427)

And MOWED the front yard! (Only took me about 25 minutes)

Then it was LUNCHTIME!

IMG_2450 (640x427)

Matt grilled us up some delicious sandwiches. Applegate Farms Herbed Turkey, Wisconsin bleu cheese, tomato, spinach, mustard.

IMG_2433 (640x427)

SO GOOD! The outside was charred and crunchy and the bleu cheese was strong!

IMG_2438 (640x427)

We complimented the sandwiches with some kettle chips! Nothing goes better with a sandwich :)

These are a new kind sent to me to review from Boulder Canyon Natural Foods.

IMG_2434 (640x427)

The chips are great – crunchy and curly – just how they should be! Ingredient list is simple. But the best part is that the bag is compostable!!!!

IMG_2436 (640x427)

I portioned out a handful onto my plate. Matt ate from the bag! He LOVED them!

IMG_2447 (640x427)

I was in charge of the fruit portion of lunch and asked Matt if he wanted to chew his fruit or drink it. He chose drink! I Vita-mixed together:

  • 1 cup Organic Valley Yogurt Drink
  • ~1.5 cups fresh local strawberries
  • 1/2 a banana
  • 2 handfuls ice
  • ~10-15 roasted almonds
  • 1 scant scoop Vega Vanilla Chai (which really makes any smoothie fabulous)

Matt couldn’t get enough of it!

Notice the Davidson seal on my glass

IMG_2458 (640x427) IMG_2456 (640x427)

Lastly, we added in some celery with some of that TJ’s Cilantro Jalapeno hummus. It was amazing!! Spicy with tons of flava. Definitely worth buying over making it from scratch, in my opinion.

IMG_2460 (640x427)

IMG_2454 (640x427)

IMG_2453 (640x427)

My shademaker!

IMG_2451 (640x427)

I’m in the middle of packing for my trip and deciding what to wear to the funeral.

  1. Nude hose or black? Or none?
  2. Black sweater or blazer?

It’s going to be cold and rainy.

IMG_2469 (640x427) IMG_2467 (640x427)

Lastly, mom sent me this awesome You Tube video of a virtual choir. Everyone recorded their part individually and they streamed it together – with a conductor and everything. Worth listening to the whole thing!

Have a great afternoon!

I vote nude hose & sweater…the blazer is nice but looks a little job-interview-ish. My condolences on the loss of your grandmother…she sure leaves a great legacy behind her!

2 Freya @ Brit Chick Runs May 9, 2010 at 2:30 pm

Beautiful sandwiches, and I love the idea of almonds in a smoothie! Did the flavour come out very much?
I’m glad you’re leg is feeling a bit better – and I gotta say, you have such toned legs!! Definetly pins to be proud of :)
That choir thing is beautiful – I couldn’t listen to the whole thing (I’m meant to be working :p) – but the first half was gorgeous!

3 Kath May 9, 2010 at 2:34 pm

You couldn’t taste the almonds :( Maybe they made it richer? (Is that a word!?)

4 Diana May 9, 2010 at 2:38 pm

Nude hose and sweater, definitely.
Those sandwiches look so good Kath! Have a good afternoon :)

5 Morgan @ Healthy Happy Place May 9, 2010 at 2:38 pm

I like the sweater best!

Have you had any offers on your house yet? Your yard always looks so beautiful, I can’t imagine it would stay on the market long!

6 Kath May 9, 2010 at 2:40 pm

No offers :(

Not even any interest in SEEING it lately!

7 Lauren @ A Fit Foodie May 9, 2010 at 2:39 pm

I’d wear nude hose and the sweater. I think you’ll feel more comfortable in that. And warm too.

Love when I have productive days of running, cleaning, cooking, etc. Makes your day feel full of accomplishments! And you’ll probably sleep great tonight. That’s always a plus. Have a fantastic rest of the day.

8 M May 9, 2010 at 2:46 pm

Do you have a sweater or piece of jewelry from your grandmother? That would be a nice touch for the funeral.

9 Kath May 9, 2010 at 2:46 pm

I don’t :(

10 Courtney @ Sweet Tooth, Sweet Life May 9, 2010 at 2:49 pm

I say nude hose (or none because they’re awful!) and the black sweater.
That lunch looks SO GOOD. I love having grilled sandwiches, but do you ever end up cutting the roof of your mouth? That ALWAYS seems to happen to me when I make a grilled sandwich on my griddler!

11 Allie (Live Laugh Eat) May 9, 2010 at 3:02 pm

We just bought a bag of chips of that brand from Costco but it’s Rice and Beans and Chipotle Cheese flavored. I didn’t know the bag was compostable–I think my dad cut off the top where it may have said it.

I like the black sweater look. And I say no hose (too much, ya know?)

12 Macrae Carreker May 9, 2010 at 3:06 pm

Sounds like a great day! I vote for the sweater and nude or no hose, but you have to feel out the weather. I hope the funeral can be more of a celebration of your wonderful grandmother :)
I love these new compostable (just typed ‘combustable’) bags! Sunchips has them too, I actually saved my empty bag to see how long it will take to decompose- haha!

13 Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter May 9, 2010 at 3:17 pm

definitely the sweater and nude hose. That sandwich looks so yummy!

14 marie May 9, 2010 at 3:22 pm

I swear I didn’t read the comments first, but I’m also going with nude hose (or none) and the sweater. Packing the jacket would be a bigger hassle too. My condolences…

15 Steph May 9, 2010 at 3:28 pm

Definitely nude panty hose and sweater!
Save travels and best wishes to you and your family.

16 Mary May 9, 2010 at 3:29 pm

Sweater and NO hose!! I hate stockings and I saw on the rachael Ray show that nude hoses are out. Go natural!

17 lynn (The Actors Diet) May 9, 2010 at 3:30 pm

sweater and black hose/tights

18 Lauren @ eater not a runner May 9, 2010 at 3:30 pm

Sorry to hear about your grandmother :-(

I agree with the no hose crowd.

19 Sara May 9, 2010 at 3:34 pm

i envy your running legs! 😉

20 Kath May 9, 2010 at 3:44 pm

:) Thanks

21 Jessica @ The Process of Healing May 9, 2010 at 3:37 pm

I’d go with the first outfit, looks great!! Well both look good but I just like the first better :)
And that lunch… oh WOW does it sound good! Especially the grilled sandwiches, holy yum!

22 Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin May 9, 2010 at 3:38 pm

I vote nude hose and black sweater, but you look great in both pics!

great job on getting back to running – i just go reacquainted with it yesterday and it feels soooooo good!

23 Lisa May 9, 2010 at 3:46 pm

Grilled sandwiches just taste better than cold sandwiches, in my opinion!

24 Clare May 9, 2010 at 3:49 pm

Oh my gosh…can I just say: your legs are AWESOME! I do step and kickboxing like a madwoman but perhaps I should switch to running!
I like the outfit with the sweater (and no hose).

25 Kath May 9, 2010 at 3:51 pm

Haha, thanks Clare. But I think they are mostly genetic! They are super compact and while I like that they’re muscular when I’m in a muscle mood, sometimes I wish I had long + lean legs!

26 Jen May 9, 2010 at 3:50 pm

I vote nude hose and sweater. The blazer makes you look like a business woman.

Also, I want to THANK YOU! Because of you, I asked for a Vita-mix for my Bday. I’m turning 35 on the 13th. My fiance and I have been using it for about 2 weeks now (it was on sale at Costco so my mom bought it for me early) and we LOVE LOVE LOVE it! My fiance puts together some AMAZING combinations – he uses avocado in most of them. YUM!! SO — THANKS for blogging. You’re awesome!

27 Kath May 9, 2010 at 3:51 pm

28 Marissa May 9, 2010 at 3:53 pm

black sweater, no hose!

29 JessicaR May 9, 2010 at 3:57 pm

Totally jealous of your calves! I’ve lifted crazy heavy weights for years and still can’t get my calves to look that amazing!

Sorry to hear you haven’t had any offers on your house :( I’m in the same boat — I’ve had my condo up for sale for six months now with no offers. I have it listed 13% lower than what I bought it for back in 2005, but still nothing… sigh. I fear real estate values are going to plummet now that the tax credit has expired. I hope I’m wrong!

30 leah @ l4l May 9, 2010 at 3:57 pm

blazer and hose.

31 Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope May 9, 2010 at 4:03 pm

Definitely go with the sweater… blazers are too “workplace” for a funeral. And I’d stick with the nude hose… you don’t want to overdo black.

Sounds like a productive Sunday Kath! Enjoy your afternoon!

32 Allison May 9, 2010 at 4:04 pm

So sorry about your grandmother.

I’d go with the sweater and some black tights if it’s going to be chilly.

33 Food Makes Fun Fuel May 9, 2010 at 4:07 pm

I would say sweater, but what do I know

34 Deva (Voracious Vorilee) May 9, 2010 at 4:16 pm

I would say sweater and no hose. My reasoning on the hose is yes, they would add warmth BUT I don’t like how they feel when they get wet – and you mentioned it was going to be cold and rainy.

35 Amy May 9, 2010 at 4:17 pm

I vote sweater and no hose. I’m sorry for the loss of your grandmother. Her legacy will definitely live on in all of you though.

36 Sarah May 9, 2010 at 4:21 pm

Cardigan. Blazer is too business-y. No hose. It’s too late in the year for black hose and nude ones are for 80s aerobics teachers.

37 ashley May 9, 2010 at 4:35 pm

Holy calf muscles!!!! Your legs looking FABulous! Sounds like a fun day and what a great lunch…grilled sammies?? YUM. Those chips are a local staple around here…they are realllly tasty!! Love the salt + vinegar. They’re pretty cheap too! There are SO many natural/organic food companies based out of Boulder, CO…it’s pretty crazy! I haven’t seen that coconut water but definitely want to try it…despite the labels from the 90’s…totally agree on that 😉

38 Jennifer (Orr) Vincent May 9, 2010 at 4:42 pm

I vote nude hose + sweater. PS: I drove by your parents’ house today on our way to a strawberry farm… which happened to be next to the Compton’s house! Hilarious. Hope you’re well :) Would love to catch up sometime!

39 Kath May 9, 2010 at 7:24 pm

Haha – fun!!

40 Melissa @ For the Love of Health May 9, 2010 at 4:56 pm

That’s so nice you had a great day! Those are the best kind!
Your lunch looks perfect!
I think nude hose and black sweater

41 Erin (Travel, Eat, Repeat) May 9, 2010 at 4:56 pm

I vote for nude (or no) hose and the sweater.

42 Wei-Wei May 9, 2010 at 5:03 pm

Woah man… muscley legs alert, second last weeding picture! :O

I vote the sweater. The blazer looks too office-ish. Did your flight get all sorted out?

Happy Mother’s day! Have a good one :)

43 Jenn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) May 9, 2010 at 5:19 pm

I like the black sweater. Depending on the weather, if it’s super warm out, I would go no pantyhose. If it’s cool enough, black.

That grilled sandwich looks deilsh. I used to HATE weeding. I grew up on a small farm with ginormous commercial greenhouses. My dad used to want me to get under the flower benches on the gravel and pull the weeds out. That job didn’t last long, lol.

44 Jessica @ How Sweet It Is May 9, 2010 at 5:33 pm

No hose! I really like the black sweater, too.

45 smilinggreenmom May 9, 2010 at 5:36 pm

Wow I am so incredibly impressed! I just love your blog and am definitely going to subscribe! My blog is and I would love for you to visit sometime :) Our family loves healthy whole foods and we have been on a mission with grains lately (our fav is Kamut Khorasan Wheat) and our kids go bonkers for smoothies! It is awesome to see that since we have tried so hard to live this life of healthier food choices, that they too love it. They do not know any different and it shows – they ask for healthy foods and they are not at all picky. I love your photos too 😀 Nice Job!

46 smilinggreenmom May 9, 2010 at 5:40 pm

Grrr…cant figure out how to subscribe to my current email! I will bookmark you! Hey – are you on Twitter? I am *would love to chat there but I don’t see that you are on? Hope you connect 😀

47 Natalie May 9, 2010 at 5:46 pm

Yumm those sandwiches look delicious! I vote for the sweater and possibly nude or no hose! And I agree with Jenn’s comment — if it’s too cold add the hose for extra warmth or not if it’ll be warm out.

48 Simply Life May 9, 2010 at 5:52 pm

what a great lunch outdoors!

49 Deirdre May 9, 2010 at 5:52 pm

I say nude hose or none and definitely the sweater.
I was reading the comments and I’m so sorry/surprised there haven’t been any offers on your house. I always admire it when I read your blog so its puzzling to me why it hasn’t been scooped up yet.

50 Kath May 9, 2010 at 7:26 pm

I know :( Hopefully lowering the price will help.

51 Stacey@ May 9, 2010 at 5:55 pm

That is my favorite hummus, it’s amazing. You should try the Tj’s spicy hummus in that same variety.

52 Meghann May 9, 2010 at 6:03 pm

I like the sweater option. The jacket on the right looks a little big. :)

53 Kim May 9, 2010 at 6:12 pm

I say go for the sweater, so cute and you look more comfortable in it. Maybe you could wear a scarf or piece of jewelry in your Grandma’s favorite color.

Boulder’s chips are my favorite! and not just because Boulder is my adopted home town.I haven’t eaten them in a while, I’m cutting back on them and because I can eat a whole bag! Jalapeno Cheddar is my favorite, so yummy!

Have a safe trip!

54 Carolyn @ lovinlosing May 9, 2010 at 6:17 pm

I’d go with the sweater.

55 Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) May 9, 2010 at 6:39 pm

What a great day! My husband is loving Kettle chips right now too. Since being diagnosed with celiac he has been on a hummus/kettle chip kick. They hold up so well to the heavy dips and they don’t taste as fried!

I would go with the sweater and no hose. I hate hose and I am totally a cardigan girl.

Glad your leg is getting better! I hope you enjoy your evening!

56 Heather @ Side of Sneakers May 9, 2010 at 6:43 pm

I like the sweater :) I say nude hose- no reason to be head to toe in black even though it is a funeral. Whenever I see too too much black at a funeral, it makes me even sadder (even though that’s silly…)

57 Kimberly May 9, 2010 at 6:55 pm

I say sweater. If it’s cold wear tights, not panty hose!

58 Katherine May 9, 2010 at 7:04 pm

I’m so sorry to hear about your grandmother. Long runs can be so refreshing; nothing like a conversation in your head to clear things up.

59 LB May 9, 2010 at 7:07 pm

Nice calves, girl! They are impressive!

60 Alex May 9, 2010 at 7:10 pm

attending fashion school makes me a reliable source!
I say no hose and the sweater looks cute. :)
haha just throw out the nude hose! unless your 80 than it’s okay, but black hose are always a great alternative.

61 Heather (Heather's Dish) May 9, 2010 at 7:36 pm

those sandwiches sound out of this world!

definitely no hose and keep the sweater if it’s going to be cold and rainy!

62 Jen May 9, 2010 at 8:00 pm

No hose/nude hose and sweater! I’m so sorry to hear about your grandmother, but I am glad you get to go and spend this time with your family.

63 Amber K May 9, 2010 at 8:10 pm

I heard about the virtual choir on the news and I love the clip! It is so neat.

Personally I wear whatever is comfortable to funerals. I’m already sad enough without having to worry about what I’m wearing! Although this has gotten me into trouble before with a relative commenting on my shoes which I deemed way too dressy for me, but they deemed entirely too casual for a funeral. Blech.

64 Melissa May 9, 2010 at 8:12 pm

Definitely the nude hose and black sweater…it’s appropriate and will look best. You’ll probably be more comfortable in the sweater, too! I love that you ask your readers for advice :)

65 Jessica Lee May 9, 2010 at 8:25 pm

those sammies are great. you and matt are adorable and you guys eat so well!

66 Erin May 9, 2010 at 8:34 pm

Kath, where did you get those adorable little blue baskets for the hummus and celery?! I’m in love with any little bowl (sort of like you and all your little spoons) and that is PERFECT for single-serving dips!

67 Kath May 10, 2010 at 6:39 am

They’re Crate + Barrel, 2 years ago

68 Stephanie May 9, 2010 at 9:27 pm

Quick natural weeding tip I learned last year and works wonderfully for patios & driveways – just pour some white vinegar on the pesky weeds and they will be gone in a matter of days… voila! Our brick patio looks spotless ever since I did this :)

69 Kath May 10, 2010 at 6:39 am

Oh good to know! Love that it’s green.

70 Hannah May 9, 2010 at 10:23 pm

I vote for the sweater too – the blazer looks a bit formal for a funeral.

Love the sandwiches – blue cheese is one of my favourite things in the world. The stronger, the better, in my opinion!

71 Anne @ Food Loving Polar Bear May 10, 2010 at 1:59 am

Awesome sandwiches, when we finally get our grill I’ll be eating grilled sandwiches all summer 😉

72 Karen May 10, 2010 at 3:34 am

this blog is hilarious. please keep the laughs coming!

73 Emma May 10, 2010 at 7:40 am

I *LOVE* Eric Whitacre (the conductor of the choir piece). My favorite piece by him is “Sleep,” it reminds me of my high school chorus days.

74 R May 10, 2010 at 8:00 am

Either black hose or none! Nude hose should be against the law!

75 Lauren May 10, 2010 at 8:33 am

Hi Kath,
I was reading your post and you mentioned a leg injury. Would you tell me what kind of injury it was? I have trouble with my IT Band and I’m just getting back into running, so if it’s the same thing, I’m wondering if you have any tips! I already foam roll, stretch and have insoles in my shoes so my feet don’t pronate, but I still feel the pull sometimes!

76 Kath May 10, 2010 at 12:37 pm

Hey Lauren,
My problem isn’t IT band – I think it’s poptilous muscle (sp?) Take it slow!
