Fun After Noon

July 25, 2012

Lots of fun things going on this afternoon!

First off was a frozen treat meet-up with Sarah! We met at Splendora’s for a gelato. On the way there, I just wasn’t in the mood for a dessert on a hot afternoon – but after seeing the flavor offerings – I changed my mind.

ROSE + WHITE CHOCOLATE LEMON was maybe the best ice cream combo I’ve had all year. It’s up there with Jeni’s Salted Caramel and the Blueberry Lemon Kohr Bros custard of recent trips! I’ve been so into rose since those Rose #31 products I had in Seattle!

Also totally impressed and happy to see that they use free-range grass-fed cow’s milk and cream in their gelato!

Next stop was a walk to Meade Park to meet Matt at the market!

I helped out for a bit and then headed back to the house to work on dinner.

And a good one it was!

These were supposed to be quesadillas, but I turned them into tostadas when I figured they would be too hard to pick up and eat with all the veggie layers.

I started with Whole Foods whole wheat tortillas, followed by lentils, then leftover roasted peppers, tomatoes, salt and southwestern seasoning and finally – the cheese!

Matt showed me that I had not made tostadas but in fact, they were soft tacos!

We ate them folded over and they were so good! I think it was the summer tomatoes and the super sharp white cheddar!

On the side: COTC

And a lone leftover zucchini, pan cooked

Aslan watched from The Great Table!

After dinner, Matt convinced me how fun it would be to accompany him to Beer Run for a Lagunitas Tap Tussle!

I kid, he was right – it was fun! Just talking about beer is fun : ) We reminisced about our visit to Lagunitas in 2010. Matt can remember every beer he’s ever tasted and every beer I’ve ever tasted so he was able to describe the ones we tried at the brewery.

Just a few more weeks till I’m tasting again!

We just walked home and my feet are hurting so much from lack of proper walkable footwear. I feel like a nerd when I wear my running shoes on outings, but I really should be wearing them given all this extra weight in ma belly!

You’re missing avocado, yo! Love the shot with the little girl and her dad at the market.

5 KathEats July 25, 2012 at 9:05 pm

I ate it all yesterday!

6 Sarah @ Learning to Feed Yourself July 25, 2012 at 9:01 pm

Surprisingly, I was totally underwhelmed by Jeni’s Salted Carmel, but the Brambleberry Crisp flavor is amazing!! I would spend 9 dollars on that pint on a regular basis!

7 KathEats July 25, 2012 at 9:06 pm

Really!?!?!?!? I haven’t had the Brambleberry though!

8 Shannon @ My Place In The Race July 25, 2012 at 9:08 pm

That gelato looks amazing! I haven’t had any in awhile../must fix this! 😀

9 Alice July 25, 2012 at 9:15 pm

It was nice to meet you at the farmers market today. Looks like we had similar thoughts for dinner, as I made quesadillas tonight too!

10 KathEats July 25, 2012 at 9:21 pm

Hey Alice!! Yes, thanks for saying hello! If you ever want to meet for a walk, just lemme know!

11 Kelli H (Made in Sonoma) July 25, 2012 at 9:22 pm

The gelato sounds amazing right now.

Wooo! Lagunitas pride! :)

12 Lindsey @ Pas de Deux July 25, 2012 at 9:24 pm

What a fun afternoon and evening!! Sarah delivered your “hi” to me when we met for coffee after your gelato date :-). Maybe next week I’ll be able to make it to the Meade market!

13 KathEats July 26, 2012 at 6:41 am

oh good! when she said who her meeting was with I laughed.. small town friends!

14 Amanda M July 25, 2012 at 9:42 pm

When I was training in Petaluma, I loved Lagunitas!! That’s right, I lived in Sonoma County for 6 months on the government’s dime. I want to go back and get stationed there.

15 Sara July 25, 2012 at 9:50 pm

I thought you called Pumpkin-Asian. And was surprised no one questioned you in the comments. Then zoomed in my phone, Aslan…Aslan. Now I get it! I really thought pregnancy brain got the best of you. :) Have a nice night!

“maybe the best ice cream combo I’ve had all year” – that’s high praise and glad it was that kinda Wednesday afternoon :)

…but I thought you liked being a nerd..? :-)

19 Khushboo July 25, 2012 at 11:24 pm

That Rose-flavored gelato sounds so interesting…and tasty! I always go for hazelnut!

20 Caroline July 26, 2012 at 3:24 am

Kath, I recently took a trip to Dublin and visited the original Guinness Brewery. I think it’s something Matt has to put on his bucket list… a real Irish Guinness is nothing like the Guinness we have here in the States. It’s pretty incredible, plus, he’d love the tour!!! (birthday/anniversary idea? 😉 )

21 KathEats July 26, 2012 at 6:37 am

fun! we hope to get to Europe sometime together!

22 Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count July 26, 2012 at 5:29 am

That dinner looks so good, I would have eaten it twice!!

23 Hope @ With A Side Of Hope July 26, 2012 at 6:05 am

That gelato looks yummy! I’ve never had gelato before. I’m excited to try it because I read the resort where we are honeymooning in 3 weeks has it! :) The tostadas look yummy too. I am a huge fan of Mexican food and inspired dishes.

24 Simply Life July 26, 2012 at 6:17 am

yum! that taco/tostada looks delicious! what a fun summer meal!

25 Katie @ Peace Love and Oats July 26, 2012 at 6:29 am

Those gelato flavors sound amazing! I’ve never actually had gelato and I clearly need to fix that!

26 Kim July 26, 2012 at 6:32 am

White chocolate lemon?! Oy. So delicious. I love splendora’s! And those tostada/tacos look amazing. My summer dinners are seriously slacking. I can’t believe I haven’t been blogging or reading blogs in months – I missed yours!

27 Katie D. July 26, 2012 at 7:04 am

Ugh!! The footwear debate kills me! I feel like such a dork wearing my sneakers everywhere, but I love the comfort. I’m really on the lookout for a pair of comfy but cute shoes!

28 [email protected] July 26, 2012 at 7:06 am

Never had or seen Rose flavor. I’ve been loving salted pretzel caramel. Dinner looks fabulous….summer tomatoes are the best!

29 jane July 26, 2012 at 7:24 am

get your favorite celebration beer stocked up! its almost time to celebrate! :-)

30 Katie July 26, 2012 at 8:13 am

So many comments that I want to make on this post. I don’t know what other flavors they had but I think I would have ordered exactly what you did. For my birthday dessert I had mango-tangerine and ameretto white chocolate. It has been so hot here that ice cream almost always sounds good. Dinner looks delicious, I always fill my tortilla way too full so it usually gets eaten with a fork or it just becomes more of a salad. Talking about beer and alcohol is fun, but being able to drink it whether you choose to or not is more fun. My kids are a year apart so I didn’t have a drink for about 2 years and I didn’t miss it that much, maybe during the hot weather. I say wear the running shoes for the support during the last few weeks. Are your feet or ankles swelling much? I was lucky that mine didn’t and my shoes were comfortable but I know some woman can only wear flip-flops. My kids are 5 and 6 and I wear my running shoes all the time, I need the support and most flip-flops and sandals are not comfortable to unless we are at the pool.

31 Nicole July 26, 2012 at 8:23 am

You should check out the “Blvd” shoes that Keen makes. I always wear them when I walk around town and don’t want to look like a nerd wearing tennis shoes. They are really supportive and comfortable (I do five miles in them totally fine, even without socks) and the Blvd styles are really cute. I have “Paradise Ballerina” in grey/pink. The “Crested Butte Slipons” are also super adorable.

Here’s a link: A little hint–you can get them on Amazon for even cheaper.

32 KathEats July 26, 2012 at 8:28 am

Some of those are really cute!

33 Nicole July 26, 2012 at 9:33 am

I know, and seriously, they are SO comfortable. I wear mine to work every single day, but also when my husband and I go on long walks around town. I’m much bigger than you too and seem to always have feet issues, but these ones are great for me.

34 Chantal July 26, 2012 at 9:52 am

I second the Keen recommendation. I wear them when I’m on my feet all day in the lab and they’re seriously the only shoes that stay comfortable for hours and hours.

35 Emma July 26, 2012 at 8:28 am

That dinner looks SO inviting!! All the delicious veggies! Yum.

36 Susan H. @ The Food Allergy Chronicles July 26, 2012 at 8:34 am

Oh…that gelato looks sooo amazing! Perfect for a hot afternoon treat! Your ‘tostada’ dinner also looked delish! I also had a bad night…huge storm started at 1 in the morning…what a light show!

37 Michele Sparrow July 26, 2012 at 8:37 am

That is my hubby’s favorite beer! :-)

38 Courtney @ Brussel Sprouts and Beer July 26, 2012 at 9:36 am

Lagunitas IPA is one of my favorite beers! Not too much longer before you can try fun, yummy beers again!

39 Kristen July 26, 2012 at 10:00 am

I’m visiting my boyfriend this week in Cville and we went to Beer Run for dinner last night! Wonder if we were there at the same time? What a small world!

40 KathEats July 26, 2012 at 11:29 am

Maybe! We were there later – around 8:30/9. Another friend just said she was there too!

41 Sarah @ The Smart Kitchen July 26, 2012 at 11:40 am

Tostada…soft taco..either way, they look delicious.

Great seeing you yesterday! We need to no let so much time pass in between our get togethers. :)

43 Cait's Plate July 26, 2012 at 12:18 pm

Matt looks so tan! Can’t believe it will only be a few more weeks until you’re sipping beers yourself!

44 Angel7 July 26, 2012 at 12:23 pm

Is Aslan Pumpkin’s real name, or is it another car? Just wondering :)

45 KathEats July 26, 2012 at 1:30 pm

No, I’m making a Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe joke : )

46 Angel7 July 26, 2012 at 6:20 pm

LOL :)

By the way, I meant to say “cat,” not “car.” :)

47 Julia H. @ Going Gulia July 27, 2012 at 11:27 am

Dang, those tacos sound REALLY good. I’m a big lentil lover (they pretty much were used in the dinners I cooked for myself the entire 4 months I was studying abroad this past semester), yet somehow I never thought to use them with taco seasoning in tacos. Definitely trying that out. Any excuse to eat Mexican inspired food is welcome :)

48 Crystal July 27, 2012 at 2:13 pm

Would you mind telling me how you cooked the lentils for your tacos?
I don’t cook lentils very often but I’m trying to use them more often. I bought a big bag of organic sprouted mixed lentils and I’m looking for something to make with them other then kale and lentil salad, this looks perfect! :)
Love the blog!

49 KathEats July 27, 2012 at 3:27 pm

In my rice cooker. But it’s just 2:1 water to lentils, boil till they’re tender, about 25 mins
