Full, Freezing, Fun!

February 26, 2012

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr – Is that breeze bringing in cold air from Alaska or something? It’s not too bad without the wind, but after standing in it for 3 hours, we’re frozen solid!

This afternoon Matt and I strolled downtown for some window shopping – which turned into real shopping!

We ended up popping into a store that had Toms, tried them on and each came out with a pair. I’ve been wanting to try them on for ages, and once I did I realized why everyone loves them. So comfy, laid back and versatile!

His + hers [mine are my favorite color of 2012: purpley gray!]

Our first even of Convention was a big buffet dinner out on the Sun Deck. Too bad the sun wasn’t there!

I sipped a sparkling water without ice, plus cherries!

And dove into a spread of Mexican food

We had beans, rice and simmered meats over tortillas with all the fixins – plus some chips.

And black bean soup that was cold by the time I got to the table from the wind!! Despite the heaters, we were freezing.

I warmed up with dessert though – flan, sopapilla and decaf coffee that I shared with Karen.

I’m just not a flan girl, but the sopapilla was like a cream-filled donut!

I can’t wait to tuck myself into our big bed and watch the season 3 finale of LOST!!

I am not a fan of flan either, but Mexican food is my favorite hands down. Hopefully there will be a few warm days for you all while you’re here.

2 Cara February 27, 2012 at 12:13 am

I love that picture of you! It’s too freaking cute! And, mexican food= love. And I am in Hawaii and it’s freezing bananers!! Snuggling in bed is always the best way to solve that problem :-)

3 Fallon February 27, 2012 at 12:18 am

I’ve never liked flan either!

Tom’s are the best. I own about 5 pairs and can’t wait to get another pair. 😉

4 Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga February 27, 2012 at 12:22 am

The Tom’s…nice! I bought 2 pairs last week online (silly me, I will never do that again!) and ended up having to return them b/c they were both a half size too large. And they didnt come in my size so that was a bust out. Glad you found some…I want to love them so. I just need to figure out my size!

And yes, it’s CHILLY the minute the sun goes down…and even when the sun is up. 60F isn’t “warm” with a 25mph ocean breeze gusting at you for hours!

5 faith February 27, 2012 at 10:16 am

After sending back three pairs recently I think I finally learned my lesson about ordering shoes online!

6 Christine @ BookishlyB February 27, 2012 at 12:23 am

I love my Toms so, so, so much. Tip- make sure your big toenails are trimmed to increase their shelf life. The toes do wear out quickly if you wear them often. Despite the “toe-ventilation” in mine I still wear them constantly!

Possible rain tomorrow :(

7 Khushboo Thadani February 27, 2012 at 12:27 am

I always thought I was not a flan fan…until I visited Paris! I am definitely a flan girl now!

8 Andrea @FrSeed2Stomach February 27, 2012 at 12:31 am

you brought LOST with you!? Now THAT’S dedication!

9 KathEats February 27, 2012 at 11:09 am

On Netflix!

10 Emily February 27, 2012 at 12:41 am

I’m not a fan of custards at all – the one exception is cheesecake – and I just can’t stand flan. I’d never turn down a sopapilla, though!
I’m sorry to hear it’s been so cold! We had great weather up in the SF bay area earlier this week, but today was FREEZING (or relatively so, anyway… around 63, I think). I hope it warms up before you guys head back home!

11 Clare @ SweetnSimple February 27, 2012 at 1:16 am

Oh how I love Mexican food.. And those Toms look awesome! I’ve never seen or heard of them before, very cool :)

12 Christine @ Oatmeal in my Bowl February 27, 2012 at 1:29 am

That is really a bummer it was cold out for dinner. I remember taking my family to Sea World and we had a lunch buffet with the whales. Needless to say, despite the heaters and sweatshirts, it was freezing.

I love your Tom’s. Tilly’s carries a similar brand. But Tom’s is a leading for charity. Love the significance behind the Tom’s brand.

14 maria @ Chasing the Now February 27, 2012 at 1:57 am

I LOVE my Tom’s. Sadly, I’ve just about worn them out (hope they make it through this summer), but I live in them during warm weather. So comfy.

15 Lorin February 27, 2012 at 2:37 am

You should check out Cafe 222 while you’re there if you have time. It was on Best Thing I Ever Ate for its peanut butter and banana grilled french toast. I tried it and it was delicious!

16 Bethany B February 27, 2012 at 2:49 am

I live in Alaska, and although it is snowing here right now, I’m not sure that our winds are making it all the way down to Cali:) Hope you have some warmer weather tomorrow!

17 J3nn(Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) February 27, 2012 at 4:23 am

The Mexican food looks amazing! I never had a pair of toms, they look narrow and I have wiiiiide feet, lol.

18 Maria@ Sinfully Nutritious February 27, 2012 at 5:44 am

What a lovely weekend. The food looked so good. Even your cherry water had me wanting some.

19 Joss February 27, 2012 at 6:45 am

I love Toms too, because of the fact that for every pair you buy, a pair goes to a child in need…they do frequent shoe drops to all over the world every few months. They are comfortable and a good cause too 😀

20 Kayla February 27, 2012 at 6:47 am

Looks like you’re having such a good time! I miss California more and more by seeing all of these pictures, I love it there!

21 Brittnie (A Joy Renewed) February 27, 2012 at 6:52 am

Love Toms! I indulged in two pair about a year ago and I wear them ALL the time. Well except now I can’t since my feet are so swollen from pregnancy – too tight and don’t want to stretch them out permanently. Can’t wait to wear them again once our little girl is here…. 9 weeks!

22 Michelle (Better with Berries) February 27, 2012 at 7:04 am

I’ve only tried flan once, but didn’t like it – maybe I should try sopapilla!

23 Simply Life February 27, 2012 at 7:21 am

I’ve heard amazing things about Tom’s as well- I’ll be curious how you feel if you wear them walking around a bunch this trip. Is there good support?

24 KathEats February 27, 2012 at 11:10 am

I haven’t walked in them a ton yet, but so far they are great

25 Katie @ Peace Love and Oats February 27, 2012 at 7:44 am

I hope you love your Toms! I got my first pair this summer and rarely took them off until the cold weather set in! I miss wearing them!

26 Cait's Plate February 27, 2012 at 7:52 am

I’m DYING to get a pair on Toms!! It’s been on my “want” list for a long while. Yours look so comfy!

I’m not a flan girl either – I think it must be the texture…just doesn’t appeal to me at all.

Glad the trip is going well so far! I’m loving living vicariously through you as I look out my window at snow on the ground (I think I’d take cold and windy SD over that about any day!)

27 Lauren @ Oatmeal after Spinning February 27, 2012 at 8:00 am

You guys are so cute in your Toms! I don’t own a pair (I need good arch support), but think they are pretty adorable.
Flan is okay, definitely not my fave Mexican dessert. I would definitely go for Sopapillas … or tres leches cake… mmmmm….

28 Hope @ With A Side Of Hope February 27, 2012 at 8:16 am

I’ve always wanted a pair of Toms! I think it’s so cute that you and Matt both got a pair. :)

29 Lee February 27, 2012 at 8:16 am

I have two pairs of Toms and the weird thing is, one is much bigger than the other pair even though they are the same size. This is what happens when you order them online, I guess.

30 KathEats February 27, 2012 at 11:10 am

I tried on 4 pairs in the store and 2 of the 4 weren’t as comfortable as the others

31 Kerry @ Totes My Oats February 27, 2012 at 8:18 am

Love Toms! I’m not a flan person either – I think it’s the texture.

32 j February 27, 2012 at 8:34 am

I was in SD in October and had the same weather, cold, windy and misty. I kept wondering where the wonderful Cali weather was. The city itself is great, though. Check out Balboa Park if youmake it off the island, so much to see and do there.

33 ~Christy @ wonderofallthings February 27, 2012 at 8:40 am

Can never plan on the weather, darn it! I agree about flan — not my style. Hope it warms up for you :)

34 KathEats February 27, 2012 at 11:10 am

We met your owner last night!!!

35 Emily February 27, 2012 at 8:40 am

Oh man! Season 3’s finale is so crazy! You’ll never get to sleep!

36 Mom February 27, 2012 at 8:41 am

So sorry it was cold, but looks like fun anyway!

37 Jen February 27, 2012 at 8:48 am

I would love to see the Toms in a color photo if you get a chance later – they look so comfy and cute! Can they be ordered online I wonder?

38 Heather @ Run Eat Play February 27, 2012 at 8:51 am

I love all your pictures. I haven’t always wanted to try a pair of Tom’s. I’ve even seen that they have sparkly pairs…

39 Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count February 27, 2012 at 8:58 am

The food looks really good. I’d have to pass on the desserts…they get me in too much trouble!

40 Jasper Naomi @ crunchylittlebites February 27, 2012 at 8:59 am

I am watching all of the seasons of LOST for the first time :) just can’t get enough…

41 katie @KatieDid February 27, 2012 at 8:59 am

love my toms and they are said to mimic minimalist shoes and be really good for walking form and alignment!

42 Sarah February 27, 2012 at 9:05 am

does anyone like flan?!

43 Sarah@The Flying ONION February 27, 2012 at 9:06 am

Oh, the spread looks fabulous! Especially dessert. 😀

Love your new shoes!

44 Angel7 February 27, 2012 at 9:16 am

I do not own a pair of Toms shoes yet, but may get some in the future.

45 Patty @ Foodie and the Beatz February 27, 2012 at 9:20 am

I have to ask if you guys have seen any ghosts in the hotel. Word is that it’s haunted!

San Diego is a favorite of mine too and all the Farmer’s Markets with amazing fruit makes me so jealous!

46 KathEats February 27, 2012 at 11:10 am

Not yet!!

47 Lynn Kent February 27, 2012 at 9:40 am

Kath –
Hope you get to meet the Great Harvest owners from Rhode Island – they are super, super, super…I told them about your blog when they first opened!
I don’t know if Paul, Wendy or both of them are attending…

48 KathEats February 27, 2012 at 11:11 am

We met Paul last night!! He was very nice :)

49 Caitlin @ Cake with Love February 27, 2012 at 10:20 am

Love Mexican food, cant wait for my vacation in Mexico, I like the purple grey too this season, mu husband got me a dress for Valentines day in that color!

50 Sneakers2Sandals February 27, 2012 at 10:27 am

I was at whole foods yesterday and guess what? They sell toms now! I thought it was kinda cool and funny…

51 Susan H. @ The Food Allergy Chronicles February 27, 2012 at 10:29 am

I don’t own a pair of Tom’s but they sure are cute! I love their shoe policy of passing on a pair of shoes to those in need…great concept! I would love a pair in red!

52 Kavi @ Lab to Fab! February 27, 2012 at 10:41 am

I agree Susan, I think it’s a wonderful philanthropy as well!

53 Maggie @ BalanceNYC February 27, 2012 at 10:42 am

I love my Toms! Been trying to get my hubby to buy a pair too.

54 Paige @ Healthy Hits the Spot February 27, 2012 at 10:48 am

It just LOOKS freezing! TOMS are the best! I love mine! I love that your hubby got the lace ups! Cool! I love the color of yours. Now I want to look at those :) I have red, and I love them! Totally laid back and versatile just like you said :)

55 Kristen @ Change of Pace February 27, 2012 at 11:18 am

I’ve been waiting for spring to get a pair of TOMS. I’m so excited so I’m hoping they are everything everyone says they are :)

56 Miriam @ Bellaspire February 27, 2012 at 11:44 am

Can’t wait to see the baby’s toms! I am gaga for their new ballet flats :)! 2 happy kids in Africa right now thanks to you guys!

57 KathEats February 27, 2012 at 12:53 pm

Not really because of decaf. But alcohol has been really hard!

58 Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin February 27, 2012 at 12:14 pm

I’ve been wanting to get a pair of Toms for ages too! But I’ve been waiting until the spring because I would get no use out of them in the winter. 😛

59 Kelly February 27, 2012 at 12:52 pm

I’ve heard of Tom’s but not aware of them much. I saw Emily wears them too and when you just showed the picture of them I was like… don’t know if I like them? Then I went to the side and see they are supposed to be like those slip on canvas shoes that were popular like 15-20 yrs ago! I’ve see those types of shoes in magazines lately and I think slip on canvas and canvas deck type tennis shoes are going to be really popular this spring/summer! Enjoy!

PS. I love flan. Every year that I go to Mexico (not this year thought :( ) we ususally go get groceries at the local store and I ALWAYS get flan, which is sold like yogurt by Yoplait there. It has the brown sugar mixture on the bottom. Yummy treat!

60 Kelly February 27, 2012 at 12:54 pm

their site, not side! Doh!

61 megan February 27, 2012 at 1:36 pm

that yellow bag is awesome! where is it from?

62 KathEats February 27, 2012 at 1:43 pm

63 Sonia the Mexigarian February 28, 2012 at 12:45 pm

i better check out loehmann’s then. I liked the bag too :)

64 Kelli H (Made in Sonoma) February 27, 2012 at 1:57 pm

I totally need to get myself a pair of Toms. That Mexican feast looks delicious!

65 Laura February 27, 2012 at 7:27 pm

I’m wearing their wedding white glitters for my wedding and can’t wait to rock them!

66 Brittany February 27, 2012 at 7:33 pm

I have those gray Toms and love them!,

67 Donna February 27, 2012 at 7:46 pm

I don’t know how anyone can wear Tom’s. They have no support to them at all. Just like wearing paper around your feet. Aren’t your feet killing you as you walk around?

68 KathEats February 27, 2012 at 8:17 pm

Not, not at all. They’re not like Danskos, but they’re fine

69 Lexi @ Cura Personalis Foodie February 29, 2012 at 9:59 pm

I’m not a fan either! Too weirdly jello-like.
