Feel Like A Million Buckwheats

January 20, 2011

Morning! Afternoon!

We’ve had a lovely start here in Missoula. We began with sleeping until our hearts were content, followed by a morning workout in the super nice Precor fitness room. I covered ~4 miles spilt between treadmilling and ellipticaling and watching Real Housewives on the TVs.

Silly me forgot about my hurt wrist, which hasn’t bothered me since the Homewood Suites, and picked up a 15 pounder. Ack! It seems that bicep curl motions are impossible, so I need to remember not to attempt those for a few weeks! Period!

I had a banana before and after my workout. Not too much because we had big plans for breakfast!

After showers and stuffing every last corner of my duffel bag with clothes, we headed out on foot downtown.

I really like Missoula! So many cute shops and restaurants. And lots of amazing menus!

Breakfast was a tough call, but ultimately the Shack Café’s buckwheat pancake got us in the door. This place was recommended by a friend.

It was 9:30 and coffee was a must! We were so happy to see that it was STRONG!

Spiked with some milk – I think I drank four cups! It’s so easy to just keep gulping it down when you have unlimited refills.

We saw this bowl full of cherries and other fruits dance by our table and knew we wanted one too. It was pricy, but worth every bite – really good fruit!!

Loved the touch of the POM arils!

And then my pancake!!! It was MONSTROUS and so good! I ordered one pancake (glad I just got one because it was so big) with two over easy eggs for a side of protein and maximum satiety for my day ahead.

It was deeelish!

With a drizzle of thick syrup and a schmear of butter

We kept raving to our waitress how delicious the breakfast was. She said we made her day being so enthusiastic about it : )

Overeasy is my favorite egg style. I always forget and order them sunny side up, but I prefer overeasy because the yolk is more evenly distributed throughout the white yet you still get that great runny inside.

Matt got a huge omelet with hashbrowns and sourdough toast. It was both of our goals to eat a large brunch since our lunch hours are busy. He cleared his plate and helped me with mine!

To the airport I go! My flight gets in at 11PM tonight – gonna be a long day.

I love good fruit at restaurants. I was in a place in TN once who told me they didn’t have any fruit b/c it was winter, even though fruit bowl was on the menu. I was completely shocked. We have grocery stores so we can have fruit year-round. Come on! Over easy is my favorite too. :)

5 Tina @ Faith Fitness Fun January 20, 2011 at 1:03 pm

buckwheat pancakes are one of my faves. So hearty and delicious, and the perfect base for a big shmear of peanut butter and drizzle of syrup.

Safe travels!

I’ve been LOVING a treadmill/elliptical split workout for the past several weeks leading up to half marathon training which starts next week. It’s such a greet combo. Looks like y’all picked the perfect place for breakfast.

29 A. January 20, 2011 at 2:05 pm

Looks good Kath. I have an unrelated question. Or perhaps readers might help. What do you feel is a healthy weight gain for a 31 year old woman, who is quite underweight and needs to gain? Doing only minimal activity (just walking leisurely each day). It is daunting because if weight gain is slow, this person could be just walking for a long time as she gains weight.
And how does it vary according to if a person only has a little or a lot to gain? Or somene like Michael Douglas who lost 30 lbs? etc , etc.

30 Kath January 20, 2011 at 2:26 pm

Hey A, I’m sorry but I can’t answer questions like these over the web. I suggest you seek the advice of a healthcare professional in your town.

31 Natalie @ Will Jog For Food January 20, 2011 at 2:06 pm

35 Rachel @ Grateful Girl Goes Gluten Free January 20, 2011 at 2:25 pm

I haven’t been out to breakfast in so long. That made me want to get up and go right now!

36 Liz @ Tip Top Shape January 20, 2011 at 2:34 pm

I really have to watch my coffee drinking when I’m at restaurants. It is just way too easy to keep getting more and more! Make sure you always check refills are free, though. One restaurant I went to only had one refill, and anything past that was three dollars!

37 Melissa @ HerGreenLife January 20, 2011 at 2:37 pm

You’re making me want pancakes! The NYTimes just had some fun pancake recipes, including one made with oatmeal, apricots, and cardamom. I’m going to try it tomorrow morning :)

38 [email protected] January 20, 2011 at 2:51 pm

41 Morgan @ Life After Bagels January 20, 2011 at 2:53 pm

I rarely find coffee at restaurants that good and almost never that strong, anyone else?

42 Kristina January 20, 2011 at 2:55 pm

That buckwheat pancake looks AMAZING…. my little sister is EXTREMELY allergic to buckwheat (apparently it’s a rare allergy but really serious)… poor kid can’t eat buckwheat pancakes or crepes, or any Kashi products at all :(

43 Shannon @ A Better Me January 20, 2011 at 2:59 pm

Yummmmm…all of your breakfast looks amazing! 😛

Those cherries look so good.

49 sweeter salt January 20, 2011 at 3:20 pm

I recently discovered over easy eggs. I know that sounds ridiculous, but I always go for scrambled or sunny side up.

That pancake looks good!

50 Kara January 20, 2011 at 3:21 pm

I hope you have an easier time getting home than you did getting there!

54 J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) January 20, 2011 at 4:38 pm

That’s such a wonderful breakfast! I would have opted for that lovely fruit bowl, too. Over-easy is my fav, too. Love runny yolks! Now I want a pancake. 😛

55 Caitlin January 20, 2011 at 5:04 pm

That is my kind o’ breakfast!

Do you have an estimate of when your store will open?

56 Kath January 20, 2011 at 5:25 pm

Hoping for May!

57 Caitlin January 21, 2011 at 5:18 pm

how exciting! I hope to make the venture to your store one day!

58 lynn (The Actors Diet) January 20, 2011 at 5:18 pm

have a great flight! i prefer over easy too but for some reason i always say sunny side up! maybe b/c i’m such an optimist :)

59 Namaste Gurl January 20, 2011 at 5:20 pm

Buckwheat pancakes? How yummy indeed- all they need is a big smear of peanut butter, no? :)

60 Jil @ Big City, Lil Kitchen January 20, 2011 at 5:55 pm

Ohh, I saw cherries at Trader Joe’s and was tempted to pick them up…but they didn’t look like your fruit bowl did – delicious!

61 lauren January 20, 2011 at 6:16 pm

yum…the runny insides on eggs are lovely, especially if you dip toast into them…

62 [email protected] January 20, 2011 at 6:53 pm

MMMMM the pancake looks so good! I love buckwheat flour :PP I wonder how it tastes raw….nahhhhh..Yesterday I tried the most delicious latte in my life! It’s called the “Spanish latte” and it’s European style coffee. They also make really pretty foamy shapes on top for you. This place is called Urth Caffe and if you’re EVER in L.A. Cali then you should definitely try. Have you been here to socal before? Would you ever have a reason to come down here? :)

63 Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin January 20, 2011 at 7:33 pm

Overeasy is my favourite way to have eggs too, but only if someone else is cooking. Whenever I try to do them myself, I always overcook the yolk. 😛

64 stacey-healthylife January 20, 2011 at 8:24 pm

Wow those pancakes look amazing. Perfect breakfast to start a long traveling day.

65 Hannah January 20, 2011 at 9:12 pm

Wow wow wow! I haven’t eaten a pancake in years (not even in my own kitchen). This has GOT to change!

66 Kat @ Cupcake Kat January 20, 2011 at 10:12 pm

Pancakes and fruit are one my favorite breakfasts. Yum

67 Ally January 21, 2011 at 10:55 pm

This breakfast looks amazing! Thank you for showing Matt’s order too.

68 Lisa January 27, 2011 at 6:31 pm

I haven’t been to Missoula but I once took a road trip by myself from Portland to White Fish, MT. It is the most gorgeous road trip I’ve ever been on. Glacier National Park is amazing.
