Fast Fridays

January 30, 2009

Everything is rushed on Friday! My alarm went off at 5:02 and I was up at 5:10 (after a few 2-minute snoozes…) My computer stopped me on my way out the door with some emails to read, so I finally made it to the gym at 5:45. While there I did a really nice 45 minutes on the elliptical followed by a round of strength training doing Kelly’s lunges with upper body moves and stability ball pushups and ab work. I added in some more variations to the lunges – instead of just biceps, shoulders, triceps, down, I doubled up my reps, then tripled them on both the way up and down for a harder burn. It was a really effective challenge. I’ve also got something Re. weight training I’ve been meaning to blog about and I haven’t had time! Perhaps tomorrow.

This mornings menu featured a Lovely Dry Cereal complemented with Vanilla Soy Milk, Nuts, Banana and Coconut.

  • ~1/2-3/4 a cup each of Kashi GoLean and Quaker Oatmeal Squares
  • ~1 cup vanilla soy milk (from Costco) with about 1 tbsp rehydrated raisins heated together until mildly warm
  • 1/2 large banana
  • A few walnuts pieces
  • Sprinkle coconut
  • 1 tbsp flax
  • Small spoonful PB

+ Chai Coconut Tea

The ambiance…

I actually ate in complete solitude today. Trying to listen to my hunger / satiety cues and all and focus on the flavors of the food. Normally I’d grab something to read or turn on the TV to watch from the other room, but this was rather pleasant and I enjoyed it. Not sure how long it will last, but I’m going to make an effort.

Did you heat up your cereal? I find it makes it more filling and more like oatmeal. YUM!

Love the breakfast table, you always make your meals so special.

Happy Friday!

3 Oh She Glows January 30, 2009 at 8:23 am

Wow such an elegant display for breakfast! Now that is something I never do, but should. You are so good at prepping your cereal I thought it was oatmeal! :)

Have a great day!

4 Beadie @ What I Ate Yesterday January 30, 2009 at 8:25 am

Once again, a beautiful bowl!

Have an awesome Friday!

5 Meg January 30, 2009 at 8:49 am

Sounds like an amazing workout! I need to try eating with no distractions. I am always reading something when I am eating.

6 Kate January 30, 2009 at 8:50 am

I love sitting and eating in silence every once in a while. Maybe you are just relishing in the idea it’s Friday! Great breakkie.

7 AlliJag January 30, 2009 at 8:52 am

Love the switch up with the cold cereal, and as usual – I totally want to steal your mug (even though my initial isn’t K!)

Happy Friday!

8 zestycook January 30, 2009 at 8:53 am

Congrats to the winners – good luck on your crazy day – see ya for lunch.

9 Courtney (The Hungry Yogini) January 30, 2009 at 8:55 am

Lovin’ the ambience!

Isn’t it strange to eat without distraction! It’s almost challenging. =)

10 megan January 30, 2009 at 9:00 am

wow – I never eat without distraction. For some reason I just really enjoy reading and eating at the same time. I don’t think I enjoy my food as much without a book :)

I love that you always have candles with your meals…so serene. And I’m impressed with your quiet breakfast! My breakfast is either eaten hurriedly as I download pictures for the blog, or at my desk in front of the computer. :(

Have a great Friday!

12 Rose January 30, 2009 at 9:09 am

Good luck with your busy day! It looks like it’s off to a good start seeing as your breakfast was ultra peaceful :)

13 Mara @ What's For Dinner? January 30, 2009 at 9:20 am

I’m amazed at the ambiance you seem to have at every single meal!! I’m lucky if I can clear off my counter enough for a full-plate shot!

14 Heather McD (heather eats almond butter) January 30, 2009 at 9:34 am

Dang it – I missed the Country Bob’s contest. :)

I need to try the cold cereal thing with flax and walnuts – I think the added fat is the key to making it stick. Thanks Kath.

15 K January 30, 2009 at 9:57 am

16 brandi January 30, 2009 at 10:05 am

Hi Kath! I know you’ve been enjoying these audio yoga classes, but can you recommend a good yoga class with visuals that is also free. I’m a yoga newbie and you’re making it seem so enjoyable and relaxing! I wanna give it a go:)

19 Erin January 30, 2009 at 10:26 am

The cereal looks delicious! Oh how I miss a good bowl of cereal. I need to work on listening to my hunger/satiety cues more. Thanks for the reminder!

23 Maureen Robinson January 30, 2009 at 10:47 am

Power breakfast! It feels so weird not to see oatmeal on your morning menu.

24 Sara January 30, 2009 at 10:57 am

That cereal mix sounds fabulous!

25 MaryBe January 30, 2009 at 11:08 am

I would like to second Jaime’s question about Yoga. I take the yoga stretch class at the Y, so I am familiar with some of the positions but would love to learn more.
Also, can you tell me why you add the flax? I see this on several of the blogs I read…what are the benefits?

26 Chelsea January 30, 2009 at 11:11 am

Have a good day girlie 😉

33 Fancy January 30, 2009 at 11:53 am

Hi Kath!
Congrats on the magazine…so exciting! I know about Shape and Woman’s World, but what other magazing were you in? I know someone else asked you that last night, but I don’t think you answered….

Good luck today, you’ll look beautiful!

34 The Duo Dishes January 30, 2009 at 2:32 pm

35 Liz January 30, 2009 at 2:52 pm

Hey, I think that I might have won, but I can’t remember 100% what I said in my comment. What do I do to find out?

36 brooke January 30, 2009 at 2:57 pm

quick question:
i get up at 5:40 am. usually at the gym by 6:45 doing spinning or running/elliptical with a weight training class (average 1 1/2 hours). i am having a hard time figuring out what to eat before to fuel me and not stuff me so that i can come home and have some oats. any suggestions???
right now i am doing an english muffin with some bb and half a nanner…but i want to eat my oats!!! lol….

37 Samara January 30, 2009 at 3:16 pm

Hi Kath,

Looks delish!

Just curious, what kind of bike do you ride?

38 Danielle January 30, 2009 at 3:37 pm

How do you make cereal look so appetizing?
It look so yummy! Love the bowl it’s so pretty.

39 Barbara January 30, 2009 at 3:52 pm

Today on the Austin morning news, they were talking about healthy breakfasts. The example they gave was Steel cut oatmeal, berries with a spoonful of PB. I thought of your blog instantly:)

Course YOUR recipes are much more yummy!

Jaime ,
I don’t really have any recommendations for visual yoga that’s free online. Yoga Today does have some, but I wasn’t really a fan of the style. YogaDownload is great for beginners if you do the Beginner ones and study the PDF pose guide beforehand. Try Gentle Hatha I first.

MaryBe ,
You can find out about the benefits of flax by Googling it, but I like it for both it’s health benefit and it’s texture. I like how it’s nutty, a little crunchy (when you grind it coarsely) and the grittiness.

Sarah (lovINmytummy),
I said in the post I heated the milk until warm.

Fancy ,
The Knot!! For our wedding. It was the local Carolinas one.

brooke ,
I just have a few big chugs from my water bottle. If you must eat, just play around with snacks until you find one you like.

Samara ,
I don’t even know – I got it for $20 on Craig’s List. It’s probably from Target or something.

41 Kath January 30, 2009 at 4:45 pm

I checked the emails and you did win! Send me your address.

42 Holly January 30, 2009 at 5:57 pm

Hi Kath- You have to tell me, how do you manage to only eat one spoonful (any tiny at that!) of PB?! If I have one, I end up going back for more, and usually dark chocolate chips, to boot!

43 jen January 30, 2009 at 10:52 pm
