Family Fun

October 11, 2009

What another incredible day! I am so grateful for my time spent on Bald Head. Like they say in the movies, “times stops” here.

The day started with a family walk –

IMG_5044 (640x427)

Surprise Buzz!

IMG_5047 (640x427)

IMG_5051 (640x427)

We made friends with lots of wildlife on our walk –

Hello Duke!

IMG_5056 (640x427)

IMG_5059 (640x427)

Old Baldy

IMG_5068 (427x640)

IMG_5064 (427x640) IMG_5065 (427x640) IMG_5067 (427x640)

A monkey

IMG_5069 (427x640) IMG_5070 (427x640)

Sportin’ KERF

IMG_5072 (640x427)

Our walk was marsh view and totally fun

IMG_5077 (427x640)

IMG_5083 (640x427) IMG_5078 (427x640)

A blue heron –

IMG_5088 (640x427) IMG_5090 (640x427)IMG_5091 (640x427) IMG_5092 (640x427)

And a cute puppy!

IMG_5094 (640x427)

IMG_5104 (640x427)

A late lunch –

IMG_5107 (640x427)

Leftover salad with feta + walnuts and grapes and leftover shrimp and tortilla chips

IMG_5110 (640x427)

And a cheesy roll

IMG_5111 (640x427)

IMG_5115 (427x640)

The Inn we’re staying in has a cookie jar….

IMG_5118 (640x427)

I resisted it thus far, but I had a delicious cookie after lunch :)

IMG_5117 (640x427)

And then we said goodbye to mom and dad

IMG_5123 (640x427)

IMG_5125 (640x427)

After some debate on what to do next, beer + beach were both mentioned

IMG_5126 (640x480)

Yesterday when we threw out the Operation Beautiful bottle, it only went about 10 feet and then came back ashore. Bummer! Today, Matt took it waaaaay out there [in the freezing water] and threw it hard.

IMG_5127 (640x480)

Success! It went way out there and drifted out with the tide.

IMG_5128 (640x480)

After a chilly hour or in the beach, we came inside for some sports.

IMG_5133 (480x640) IMG_5134 (480x640)

Soccer!!! Matt A. is turning from Matt Allen to Matt Athlete because he is not only a star runner, but a star soccer player too!

IMG_5139 (480x640)

OK, I won’t lie. They brought New Castle for hydration! We played sports for about 40 minutes and we got thirsty!

IMG_5131 (640x480)

IMG_5144 (480x640)

A lonely cocktail hour without our parents. I had some Reisling

IMG_5148 (640x427)

Family portraits –

IMG_5150 (640x427)

IMG_5165 (427x640)

IMG_5160 (640x427)

For entertainment we played a version of Trivial Pursuit that let us keep our own score –

IMG_5168 (640x427)

Larbs demonstrating a penguin’s foot –

IMG_5169 (427x640)

After cocktail hour we hopped on the golf cart to head to dinner

IMG_5173 (640x427)

We went to the Bald Head Island Club for dinner. Our first time there, so we were in the reviewing mode.

IMG_5174 (640x427)

A delicious Shriaz

IMG_5178 (427x640)

IMG_5176 (640x427)

IMG_5179 (427x640)

IMG_5189 (640x427) IMG_5196 (640x427)

We had the fried oysters to start – and they were fabulous!

IMG_5200 (640x427)

I had the crab cakes for my meal.

IMG_5203 (640x427)

But we played the rotate-your-plates game, so we all had a taste of everything. Matt A.’s vanilla fish was the best, followed by my crab cakes and them Matt’s cornmeal fish and then Larbs’ gumbo.

IMG_5206 (640x427)

We couldn’t resist an Apple Pie a la mode and Carrot Cake  for dessert

IMG_5215 (640x427) IMG_5217 (640x427)

And when we returned, the last bite of birthday cake.

IMG_5218 (640x427)

‘Twas a super festive and fun evening!

But totally time for bed!

I’m so into Riesling right now. I’m finding it to be the perfect Fall weather white! Especially some of the drier versions…

Have you tried Pacific Rim Dry Riesling? That’s my fave.
